Class <strong>of</strong> 2009 commencement ceremony<br />

The NKU <strong>Chase</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> 2009 commencement ceremony was held May 9, 2009.<br />

Northern Kentucky University President James C. Votruba presided over the ceremony and<br />

conferred law degrees to 134 graduates.<br />

Philip J. Schworer ’86, president <strong>of</strong> the Cincinnati Bar Association, delivered the<br />

commencement address. Schworer received an honorary Doctor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong>s during the ceremony in<br />

recognition <strong>of</strong> his exemplary leadership and service to the bar and community and his steadfast<br />

commitment to equal opportunity within the legal pr<strong>of</strong>ession.<br />

Molly Tami, <strong>Chase</strong> associate dean for student affairs and admissions, presented the<br />

welcome and opening remarks; Gail Wells, NKU vice president for academic affairs and provost,<br />

delivered remarks in recognition <strong>of</strong> <strong>Chase</strong> faculty; and <strong>Chase</strong> Dean Dennis Honabach presented<br />

the degree candidates.<br />

Awards were presented on behalf <strong>of</strong> the graduating class by Adam Stigall, president <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>Chase</strong> Student Bar Association. The 2009 Robert O. Lukowsky Outstanding Faculty Award<br />

recipient was Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Henry L. “Steve” Stephens, and the 2009 Outstanding Staff Member<br />

Award recipient was <strong>Chase</strong> registrar Jenny Young.<br />

law Review Fall<br />

Symposium<br />

The Northern Kentucky <strong>Law</strong> Review<br />

hosted its fall symposium October 17 in<br />

the Student Union on NKU’s campus. The<br />

symposium was titled “Race and the Death<br />

Penalty.” Speakers included:<br />

• Melynda J. Price, assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

at the University <strong>of</strong> Kentucky <strong>College</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong>, who talked about “Contemporary<br />

Influences <strong>of</strong> the Death Penalty<br />

and Race.”<br />

• Scott W. Howe, Frank L. Williams<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Criminal <strong>Law</strong> at Chapman<br />

University School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong>, who<br />

discussed “Race, Death, and Disproportionality.”<br />

• Ronald J. Tabak, who spoke on “The<br />

Continuing Role <strong>of</strong> Race in Capital<br />

Cases, Notwithstanding President<br />

Obama’s Election.” Tabak is special<br />

counsel at Skadden, Arps, Slate,<br />

Meagher & Flom, L.L.P. and Affiliates<br />

and co-chair <strong>of</strong> the Death Penalty<br />

Committee <strong>of</strong> the American Bar Association’s<br />

Section <strong>of</strong> Individual Rights<br />

and Responsibilities.<br />

• Gennaro F. Vito, pr<strong>of</strong>essor and<br />

distinguished university scholar at<br />

the University <strong>of</strong> Louisville’s Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> Justice Administration, who<br />

discussed “The Racial Justice Act in<br />

Kentucky.”<br />

The symposium concluded with a panel<br />

discussion moderated by <strong>Chase</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Michael Mannheimer. The law review’s<br />

symposium editor was Brad Gibson, and<br />

the editor-in-chief was Christen Steimle.<br />
