Executive Director of Clubhouse Operations
This past year has flown by, and I would like to thank the entire staff of the Club for
their hard work and commitment; without them, the Club could not offer to members
the value and service to which they have grown accustom. The quality of food
continues to be superior, and we are always looking at new ideas to make your
experience at the club the best it can be.
Speaking of new ideas, the Wednesday “Gals’ Night Out” and the Thursday “Guys’
Night Out” events started in January and have been well received by many members.
A special kudos to Cathy, Laura, Greg, Kyle, Kayla, and Christine for all their hard
work to make these weekly events successful. We will continue to offer more fun
games, food and drink specials through March.
The ballroom dance lessons started a few weeks ago and will continue every
Wednesday evening from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. You do not need to attend every class as
each class will include new instruction. Stop by and check it out just for the fun of it!
The All Member Winter Party “Livin La Vida Loca” is scheduled for Friday evening,
March 2 from 6:30 – 11:00 p.m. We have booked some great entertainment that will
be sure to bring warmth to the winter blues! You and your friends will enjoy chefcreated
small plates that evening, along with a beautiful dessert display. Save the date,
invite some guests and enjoy an evening of sizzlin’ hot fun!
Looking forward into the upcoming winter months, Cooking Classes for both adults and
children have been scheduled, along with two more Wine Tasting Happy Hours.
Lastly, as President Tom Shannon mentioned in his article, the GVGCC Membership
Committee, along with the Board of Directors, will be hosting two Open Houses this
winter. The first Open House will be held on Wednesday, February 29, with the
second Open House scheduled for March 29. Watch your email for your special
invitation.
Please check the enclosed calendars, watch your emails, and join us for all these
exciting winter events.
Reminder - There are three member numbers hidden in each issue
of the newsletter. If you find your member number hidden in the
text of The Valley Voice, you will receive a free meal for two in the
Winged Foot Grille.
Please read carefully -
if you find your number, contact our Concierge, Laura Arnold for
President’s Message
Tom Shannon, President
I am both honored and humbled to serve as President of the
Golden Valley Golf and Country Club this year. I would like to
thank my fellow Board Members for electing me. I caddied here
as a youngster, and I have always been grateful for the
opportunity and privilege of being a member. I consider
GVGCC to be the finest club in the state – the combination of
our fabulous golf course, clubhouse/facilities and most
importantly, our fellow members, make it second to none!
I am looking forward to working with our board and executive
committee this year. Our 2012 Executive Committee consists of:
Perry Silverman, Vice President; Jim Brown, Treasurer; Al
Boston, Secretary. An incredibly talented and experienced
threesome! This is Perry’s sixth year, Al’s fifth year, and Jim’s
fourth year. The rest of the Board is made up of our past
president, Scott Bullock, along with Steve Kahn, Lee Snitzer,
Brad Severson and Andy Weiner. These are all really talented
men who are all leaders in their respective fields. I do know that
we will always lead the club by evaluating options and doing
what we collectively believe to be in the best interest of the club.
I would like to acknowledge and thank Scott for his time,
commitment, and leadership this past year on behalf of the entire
club, and on a personal note, for the time and mentoring he has
provided to me. Scott has gone well beyond the call of duty, as
this is his sixth year of a second stint on the Board. He had some
difficult challenges to deal with, and he always handled them with
class and in the best interest of the club. Thank you, Scott!
Many of the decisions that the Board faces come through our
various committees and with the committees’ recommendations.
We are very fortunate to have the following committee chairs
again in 2012: Finance Committee, Jim Bomberg; Green and
Grounds Committee, Gary Gottschalk; Golf Committee, Al
Meuwissen; House Committee, Brad Cosgriff; Membership
Committee, Allan Share; Pool Committee, Carrie Zeman; and
Tennis Committee, Leah Stich. We are always looking for
additional help on these various committees; if you have an
interest, please let us know. Serving on a committee is a great
way to get involved, help out the club, and meet other members.
This is the start of the second year of our general management
team of Francisco Gonzalez, Jeff Ische, and Tom Rubenstein. It
has been rewarding to witness their personal growth over the last
year. Each has taken on ownership of the club, and the Board is
quite pleased with this arrangement as we move forward in 2012.
We believe we got it right when we agreed on this style of
management because of the talent and zeal each of these three
brings to the club.
The golf business continues to be a challenge. We lost 24 golf
members at the end of the year. This is a little higher than
average. However, we did add two new members, so we are at
303 golfing members as we begin 2012. This is an acceptable
number, but one that we would like to increase. The 2012 – 2013
budgets are in full swing and we will again operate under a
fiscally responsible and conservative budget to operate under.
However, we have quite an opportunity in front of us to pick up
our pace on membership. I would like to call on every member’s
help to find and recruit new members. Far and away the most
effective way to find new members is through referrals of friends
and colleagues. Towards that end, the Membership Committee
will be hosting two Open Houses to provide an opportunity to
showcase our club. The first will be Wednesday, February 29, and
the second one is scheduled for March 29. These will be classy
events in which we can showcase our club to a number of
potential members. Please plan on attending at least one of these
and bringing with you some potential new members!
2012 will be a great year for our club. I hope you are able to
become more involved. Please note we have started some new
and exciting events, including Gals’ Night Out on Wednesdays,
Guys’ Night Out on Thursdays, Happy Hours and Dance Lessons,
just to mention a few. I have partaken in the Guys’ Night Out
and encourage others to take advantage of these and other
opportunities at your club.
The weather continues to be mild. Hopefully that will continue
and we will be opening the golf course early. Please feel free to
contact me or any member of the Board if you have any
questions, suggestions, or concerns.
