Swimmers, teachers and parents ready for attempt
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Officials at the Tinley
Park-Park District would
like to be included in an
event that will end up in a
book that also features men
who cram hundreds of cigarettes
in their mouths, eightfoot
giants and those who
reach four digits in weight.
The TPPD’s White Water
Canyon Water Park will join
water parks from all over
the world to try to break a
Guinness World Record in
the World’s Largest Swimming
Lesson at 10:30 a.m.
on Thursday, June 21.
Registration begins at
9:15 a.m. at the front gate of
the park, 8221 E. 171st. St.
Parents are invited to be in
the water with their children
for this half hour event.
The current record is
36,564 participants set in
2014 in an event in which
swimmers and instructors
from 22 countries participated.
The largest lesson at
a single venue was set in
2013, when Sun-N-Fun in
Naples, Flordia, drew 1,308.
Is this just one big publicity
stunt?
Is sure looks like it. But the
publicity is for a good cause
as it brings out the awareness
in childhood drownings.
WLSL officials say
that research shows the risk
of drowning can be reduced
by 88 percent if children participate
in formal swimming
lessons before they turn five.
The group hopes to get its
message across to a billion
people worldwide.
More than 236,000 children
and adults have participated
in WLSL events
generating more than a half
a billion media impressions
about the vital importance of
learning to swim.
Forty-four countries having
participated since the event
began in 2010: Argentina,
Australia, Bahamas, Bahrain,
Benin, Bermuda, Bolivia, Brazil,
Canada, Cayman Islands,
Chile, Colombia, Cyprus,
Ecuador, Falkland Islands,
Germany, Ghana, Hungary,
India, Italy, Jamaica, Japan,
Lebanon, Lithuania, Marshall
Islands, Mexico, Panama,
Peru, Philippines, Poland,
Portugal, Puerto Rico, South
Africa, South Korea, Spain,
Sudan, Switzerland, Uganda,
Ukraine, UAE, United Kingdom,
United States, Uruguay
and Zimbabwe.
