ambulance involved in crash
James Sanchez, Editor
An ambulance belonging
to the New Lenox Fire
Protection District was involved
in a three-car accident
Thursday, June 7, on
Route 30 near Nelson Road,
Runner
him on. She really wants to
run like dad, so the next race
they’re going to run together,”
Rudofski said. “It’s very
important to us to come and
root him on. We always look
forward to it.”
The New Lenox Community
Park District and Chamber
of Commerce hosted the
annual race for the sixth year.
According to a spokesperson
for the event, the money
raised from the race will be
split between a chamber
scholarship and a Park District
scholarship.
Recent Lincoln-Way Central
graduate Zak Hutchinson
was the first to cross
the finish line with a time of
17:51.5. He said that this race
will set his pace for summer
practices and prepare him for
the Chicago Marathon that
he plans to run this year.
“It felt good,” Hutchinson
said after crossing the finish
line. “Coming out of my high
school season, it’s a good
way to see where I’m at.”
This year’s turn out was
similar to previous years of
more than 250 participants.
Chief Executive Officer of
the New Lenox Chamber of
Commerce Emily Johnson
said that it was “a perfect
race day.”
“We’re really happy with
this year’s turnout,” Johnson
said. “It really is supporting
the youth in our community
From June 7
according to a press release
from the NLFPD.
The incident reportedly
occurred at 11:51 a.m. when
firefighters were returning
from a training exercise. No
firefighters were hurt, but
and is making a difference
in the lives of young people.
It’s a great way to bring our
businesses and community
together. It’s also a great way
to start your running season.”
For Jackie Handzik, this
year’s Chasing the Sun race
was her first.
“I think it’s a great turnout
as far as having a lot of sponsors
at a community event,”
she said. “It’s very family
oriented. It’s important to
welcome the kids and introduce
them into fitness.”
Local businesses had
booths set up along the park
to socialize with participants
and their families before and
after the race. Representatives
from the radio station
101.9 The Mix, Advanced
Family Eye Care, TRL Roofing
and other local businesses
interacted with participants
and held giveaways.
Phillip Cooper, Project
Manager at TRL Roofing in
Dolton, was one of the many
sponsors for the race that had
a booth set up in the middle
of park.
“This is our fifth year doing
this race,” Cooper said.
“We started doing it to support
the parks, and now a
lot of our workers actually
enjoyed running in it themselves.”
The certified 5K course
started and ended at the New
Lenox Commons. After the
race, participants rehydrated,
ate pizza and took part in activities
with their families.
one person was transported
to Silver Cross Hospital with
non-life-threatening injuries,
the release said.
Runner Dave Rudofski
met back up with his family
after he crossed the finish
line. He said that seeing his
family along the sidelines
not only motivated him but
meant everything to him.
“Having them cheer me on
just makes me run that much
harder to the finish line. You
get gassed out on the top and
I know they’re waiting on the
bottom,” D. Rudofski said.
“ I also race my brother so
there’s some competition.”
This is his fourth year participating
in the race and finished
with a time of 24:08:2.
D. Rudofski raced alongside
his brother Michael who finished
14 seconds behind him.
“It really starts off the
summer,” D. Rudofski said
about his tradition of attending
the race.
While Hutchinson, of New
Lenox, was the first male to
finish the race, Kristin Kotara
was the first woman to finish
the race with a time of 20:16
(fifth overall). New Lenox
resident Jay Parker finished
in second place overall with
a time of 18:54. The first
New Lenox woman to finish
the race was Vanessa Kenny
with a time of 20:57.5, which
was eighth overall. Other
local participants Colin Vetor
(seventh place overall,
20:25.3) and Eric Hypke
(eighth overall, 20:43) finished
in the Top 10.
