FASHION DESIGN PROGRAMMES<br />

Basic Computing: Graphics Applications<br />

Introduction to Adobe Photoshop <strong>and</strong> Illustrator.<br />

Basic Computing: Office Applications<br />

Practical application <strong>of</strong> Micros<strong>of</strong>t Office: Word, Excel <strong>and</strong><br />

Powerpoint for use in illustrated reports, business letters,<br />

outlines, charts, research papers <strong>and</strong> spreadsheets <strong>and</strong><br />

visual presentations.<br />

Beginning Fashion Drawing<br />

Intermediate Fashion Drawing<br />

Basic drawing skills are taught from a live fashion model to<br />

help the student define movement, proportion, <strong>and</strong><br />

perspective. Students learn through observation how<br />

various garments hang in relation to the body. Exploration<br />

<strong>of</strong> media <strong>and</strong> the styles <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional illustrators helps<br />

students develop a fashion signature.<br />

CAD Systems for Fashion Design<br />

<strong>The</strong> use <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional computer s<strong>of</strong>tware for apparel<br />

collections planning <strong>and</strong> presentation is presented.<br />

CAD Systems for Pattern Drafting<br />

Using pr<strong>of</strong>essional grade s<strong>of</strong>tware, students learn cutting<br />

edge technology in the creation <strong>and</strong> gradation <strong>of</strong> the pattern.<br />

Collections Development<br />

Working in t<strong>and</strong>em with the Concepts Workshop class,<br />

students are faced with creative problem solving via<br />

couture techniques, tailoring <strong>and</strong> experimental methods <strong>of</strong><br />

draping or pattern making.<br />

Colour <strong>and</strong> Design I,II<br />

<strong>The</strong> elements, principles <strong>and</strong> factors <strong>of</strong> design in black,<br />

white <strong>and</strong> gray values are explored. <strong>The</strong> second semester<br />

delves into the nature <strong>of</strong> colour: hue, value, light, tonal<br />

mixtures, systems <strong>of</strong> colour.<br />

Concepts Workshop I<br />

In this final year <strong>of</strong> study, focus is placed on research <strong>and</strong><br />

development <strong>of</strong> personal style as the student prepares to<br />

enter the workforce. Students interface with the fashion<br />

industry through designer <strong>and</strong> industry driven projects.<br />

Concepts Workshop II<br />

Students devote their attention to the realization <strong>and</strong><br />

fabrication <strong>of</strong> their “thesis” collection, comprising up to six<br />

garments. Faculty <strong>and</strong> outside pr<strong>of</strong>essionals provide<br />

invaluable critiques <strong>and</strong> guidance.<br />

Design Concepts I,II<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> various fashion markets with an eye on designing<br />

within imposed constraints. <strong>The</strong> use <strong>of</strong> the croquis book,<br />

the “story board,” colour <strong>and</strong> fabric boards are imposed as<br />

essential working tools. <strong>The</strong> second semester is devoted to<br />

students’ involvement in a pr<strong>of</strong>essional designer driven<br />

project.<br />

Design Lab<br />

Students learn to research, collect information <strong>and</strong><br />

sharpen their skills <strong>of</strong> observation while learning to<br />

prepare reports <strong>and</strong> presentations, visually <strong>and</strong> orally.<br />

Design Studio I,II<br />

Advanced studio techniques with an emphasis on design<br />

aesthetics <strong>and</strong> a focus on the process <strong>and</strong> procedure <strong>of</strong><br />

executing a design concept to layout, cutting, construction,<br />

fitting <strong>and</strong> finishing. <strong>The</strong> second semester works in<br />

t<strong>and</strong>em with Design Concepts for the designer driven<br />

project.<br />

Digital Workshop: Adobe Photoshop<br />

A digital imaging course tailored to fit the needs <strong>of</strong> the<br />

fashion designer, Adobe Photoshop is used as the ultimate<br />

tool for Fashion Visual Presentations.<br />

Digital Workshop: Adobe Illustrator<br />

Adobe Illustrator is used to construct technical drawings<br />

(otherwise known as flats or specs).<br />

Draping I,II<br />

Draping techniques through fitting muslin on the dress form<br />

is a method used to achieve basic shapes <strong>and</strong> interesting<br />

volumes from which design concepts emanate. Students<br />

learn to make basic patterns <strong>and</strong> to achieve balance in<br />

three dimensional form. In semester two, they work with a<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> patterns, layouts, cutting, <strong>and</strong> construction<br />

techniques with an emphasis on individual design<br />

aesthetics.<br />

Drawing From Observation<br />

Both perceptual <strong>and</strong> analytical in nature, this basic drawing<br />

course is designed to help the student to train the h<strong>and</strong> to<br />

mind to eye coordination through direct observation <strong>of</strong><br />
