The secret to beautiful 

interior lighting 

Light has more influence over interior design 

than any other single element, by having the 

ability to alter your perception of a living 

space and how you interact with it. In this 

book we will not only show you how to use 

light but will also give you the tools to enhance 

your interior designs and create beautiful, 

functional living spaces. 

For many, creating an effective lighting scheme 

that does not draw attention to itself and is 

sympathetic to your interior design, may seem an 

esoteric art. But the secret to creating an effective 

lighting scheme is to apply light in key layers. 

Firstly, lay down a background of ambient light. 

The nature of this will be based on the primary 

function of the room. Some rooms have a clear 

purpose; bedrooms are places to relax, bathrooms 

are activity based. Multi-function rooms such as 

kitchens may need flexible approaches through 

zoning and dimming. 

Next, look at the secondary functional activities that 

happen in a room. A room with a relaxed, ambient 

light may still require areas of strong, purposeful 

light, for example, reading in the bedroom or 

shaving in the bathroom. 

Lastly, look at the decorative detail and how lighting 

could accentuate colours, textures, the height 

of the ceiling, or more simply a shape or object. 

Bringing all of these different elements together 

and blending these pools of light, you will create a 

space that is practical, appropriate and beautiful.

lighting function 

There are three groups of lighting you need to consider when lighting 

a room. Using all three will not only give you a great overall effect but 

will provide flexibility to perform the wide range of functions the room 

may need to accommodate. This is especially important in kitchens. 

The change from a bright, energetic light for daytime tasks, to a relaxed 

space after work and through to an intimate atmosphere for evening 

dining should be seamless and effortless. 

Ambient lighting 

Ambient or background lighting is a room’s 

overall illumination. It takes many forms including 

ceiling mounted or recessed fixtures that direct 

light downwards and wall lights and uplighters 

that wash both walls and ceiling with light. 

Task lighting 

Task lighting is functional lighting that helps you 

with everyday activities - preparing food, reading 

and dressing. Under cabinet lights, spot lights 

and strip lights are all obvious examples of 

task lighting. 

Accent lighting 

Accent lighting adds drama to a room and can 

significantly affect its mood. Careful placement 

of accent lighting allows you to change the 

room from a bright, energetic space to a relaxed 

sanctuary at the flick of a switch or turn of a dial.

Brightness 

Because LED lighting uses so little energy the 

small amount of wattage consumed is not helpful 

in gauging the brightness of the light. Instead 

the industry refers to the lumen value to give an 

indication of brightness. 

The function of your lighting will guide you 

as to how many lumen you should be looking 

for. Typically, higher lumen products are more 

suitable for task lighting and lower lumen for 

accent lighting. However, choosing ambient light 

for a small room may require fewer lumen than 

for a large room. Similarly, low lumen for task 

lighting may be acceptable if multiple units are 

used simultaneously. 

RGB colour 

RGB LEDs cover the whole of the visible spectrum. 

From the brightest daylight through to a warm 

candle glow. They can also create a specific colour, 

using a mixture of red, green and blue light. 

Dimming 

Most of the lighting in this book is dimmable. This 

creates incredible lighting flexibility, changing the 

mood and function of a room instantly. 

Efficiency 

Because LEDs are 90% more energy efficient 

and can have a life of up to 25 years 1 , LED 

lighting will make a notable difference to your 

power consumption and environmental impact. 

Your guide to brightness in this book 

In the front part of this brochure we show the indicative brightness of a 

product through the use of a visual scale, shown here. If you want to know the 

exact lumen of a product it can be found in the technical guide. 

When you are looking at the brightness of a product it's useful to bear in 

mind that cool white tones are generally brighter than warm white tones.

lighting colour & function 

It is useful to remember that there is a colour 

choice even within white light. At one end of the 

scale there is cool, crisp white light with a touch 

of blue; very much like bright, indirect daylight. 

As you move through the scale the light begins 

to warm to a more neutral 'noon time' white and 

at the warmest end of the scale it becomes the 

warm, slightly yellow light you would see at the 

start and end of the day. 

Colour of white light is often referred to as 

temperature and is measured in Kelvins. For 

simplicity, we refer to white light in this book 

as belonging to one of three categories - cool, 

neutral and warm. 

You will also see in this book the possibilities 

of RGB fully coloured light which allows you to 

change the light through most of the colours of 

the visible spectrum. 

White colour and ambient lighting 

Deciding which white tone you should use for 

ambient lighting will depend on several things. 

Think about the primary function of the room; 

if it is used during the end of a day or is a space 

where you enter from the dark you might consider 

a warmer white colour. If it is a multi-functional 

room, choose a neutral white tone. Also be 

sympathetic to the aesthetic of the room. 

A contemporary kitchen with high gloss and large 

flat expanses is best brought to life with a cool 

or neutral white colour, while a more traditional 

naturally-styled room might benefit from a 

warmer white colour. 

White colour and task lighting 

Again, the tone of white for task light depends 

somewhat on the activity undertaken. A warmer 

white colour is generally easier on the eye when 

reading, but if you are cooking or preparing food 

it is preferable to have a neutral white colour so 

you can judge the food's freshness or readiness 

to serve. 

White colour and accent lighting 

The choice of white colour in lighting individual 

objects or spaces depends on the object or space 

you are highlighting. The tone of white light affects 

our perception of the colour it is illuminating. 

It's important to bear this in mind if you have 

an interior design with a strong colour motif. 

A cooler white colour looks great with 

contemporary work surfaces and chrome 

accessories whereas a warm white colour might 

be more appropriate with wood and highlights 

gold flecks in high gloss granite beautifully.

change throughout the day. Altering this mix 

manually can be time consuming and laborious. 

By using the right control technologies you can 

effortlessly switch between combinations of

function of a room in an instant. 

Automatic control 

This ranges from simple switches and 

sensors that activate lighting inside 

a cabinet when the door is opened, to 

sophisticated gestural control sensors 

that can control the brightness of light 

depending how close your hand is. 

These controls are not only functional 

and practical, but deliver light on demand 

without upsetting the ambient mood of 

the room. 

Dimmers 

Dimmers are still a very useful way of 

controlling large areas of light simply 

and intuitively. 

Our latest range of LED drivers now 

enables you to control LED lighting 

consistently and sensitivity from 

a standard wall dimmer. This is a 

breakthrough for LED lighting and can be 

used with your room’s ambient lighting or 

with groups of accent or task lighting.

Four zone control 

A great balance between simplicity and 

flexibility, four zone dimming controls 

allow you to adjust the brightness, colour 

temperature and colour of lighting in up 

to four different zones, either individually 

or collectively. 

The controls can be either wall mounted, 

remote or app controlled. The wall 

mounted panel works wirelessly with 

a receiver, with a range of 20m for the 

remote control. 

Wi-Fi control 

For even greater flexibility, lighting 

designs can be modulated with 

downloadable applications through 

Wi-Fi. Not only do these applications 

provide complete control over brightness, 

temperature and colour for every element 

of your lighting, but preset zones allow 

you to switch instantaneously between 

lighting for daytime activities to end of day 

activities such as entertaining and dining. 

Home automation systems 

The ultimate in lighting control. With 

the correct interfaces our LED lighting 

can seamlessly integrate with home 

automation systems such as Lutron 

and Rako. 

These advanced systems integrate with 

other technology allowing you to change 

your visual environment at the touch of a 

button. These can automatically change 

to suit the time of day or even the season.

Using a mix of ambient, task and accent lighting 

you can create very different environments 

within the same room. Typically a combined 

kitchen living area will function as a task 

orientated space in the daytime and a relaxation 

and recreational space in the evening. With the 

right combination of lighting and the correct 

control technologies this can be easily achieved. 

1 Ambient - ceiling spot lighting 

The brightness of overhead LED spot lighting 

can be adjusted to meet the needs of a busy 

kitchen and be dimmed to almost nothing 

when the work is done. 

2 Task - under-cabinet lighting 

Strong, bright task lighting, in this instance in 

the form of under-cabinet RGB & White LED 

tape, provides a bright continuous expanse of 

light for manual activity. 

3 Task - in-cabinet lighting 

Automatically activated by discreet sensors 

when the door is opened, these purely 

functional LED spotlights do not affect the 

overall lighting scheme of the room. 

4 Task - under-cabinet lighting 

Under-cabinet COB spot lights provide an 

even illumination across the worktop surface 

and the splash-back.

LED tape 

LED tape gives you incredible lighting versatility. 

It's available for almost every conceivable 

application, from wet rooms to kitchens, 

and can be used for functional or accent 

lighting, or both. It offers complete control 

over brightness, temperature and colour, 

plus it can be easily fitted and requires 

minimal maintenance. 

The brightness of LED tape 

LED tape can easily be dimmed but its 

maximum brightness is generally determined by 

how many LEDs there are per metre. We have 

four main types of tape available: 30, 60, 120 

and 240 per metre. Each of these are suitable 

for different areas and effects. We also have 

pre-cut LED tapes, which simply push together 

to any length you need. These are available with 

a range of different connectors, giving you even 

greater flexibility. 

30 per metre tape – is well suited for accent 

lighting and ambience. 

60 per metre tape – a higher level of light, 

good for an all round solution for task and 

accent lighting. 

120 per metre tape – with an very high output, 

120 tape is a light source in its own right. 

240 per metre – this ultra high output provides 

an intensely bright light for accent lighting.

The colour of LED tape 

White LED tape: As the name suggests, provides 

a consistent bright, dimmable white light, which 

is available in range of temperatures from extra 

warm through to cool white. 

Coloured LED tape: RGB LED light is able to 

create millions of colours as well as a white 

light. By using three chips (red, green and blue) 

it works in a similar way to your television or 

computer screen. Each diode can be controlled 

independently to create the perfect colour to 

match your mood. 

RGB & White LED tape: Some of our RGB LED 

tapes have an extra white diode which makes 

switching to white light happen instantly. 

This is ideal in rooms that have multiple uses 

where switching between a functional and 

recreational environment happens frequently.

LED tape 

Side emitting LED tape 

This LED tape emits light from its edges rather 

than from its surface, creating light that is 

parallel to the surface it is attached to. This is 

particularly useful around curved worktops, as 

well as uplighting curved architectural features. 

IP rated LED tape 

An IP rating is a measurement of the protection 

an item will have against the ingress of solid 

objects (dust, dirt, etc.) and water. IP rated LED 

strips come with a silicone coating making them 

waterproof to varying degrees. 

A higher IP rated tape is ideal for installing in 

kitchens, wash-up areas, bathrooms and wet 

rooms. A lower rated tape is suitable for tape that 

might need cleaning with a damp cloth or where it 

might be splashed with water.

LED dotless tape

LED tape comprises a series of diodes each 

emitting its own miniature dot of light. In some 

instances where the space between the light and 

the surface is small or on surfaces with high 

reflectivity, these small dots of light can be seen 

and are unsightly. Up until now the only solution 

was to use very bright tape to minimise this effect 

or deeply recess the tape in a profile. 

Using the latest technology, our new dotless 

LED tape provides a tape that is capable of 

delivering strong task lighting and can be 

dimmed to a low level without creating any dots. 

When used in a standard aluminum profile it will 

give a clean continuous pure strip of light.

There are many designs of profile to house 

LED tape, from attractive surface mounted 

options to clever recessed housing, available 

in a range of materials and finishes. You can 

even change the effect of the lighting with 

different grades of diffuser. Clear diffusers 

give a continuous sharp light and frosted 

diffusers a softer illumination. You can find 

all of our profiles in the technical guide.

These profiles can be integrated into many different materials and provide 

discreet housing for LED tape. Particularly useful for minimalist designs or 

where, for practical reasons, the tape needs to lie flush with the surface.

Surface 

In some areas where the profile will be less visable, for example, behind a 

pelmet or over a cabinet, there is a practical advantage in fixing the profile 

and housed tape to the surface. 

Specialist 

Tape can even be housed in profiles specifically designed for other 

functions. These include hanging rail profiles and profiles that can bent 

to match curves or plastered into walls or ceilings.

Lighting under your cabinets provides you with

spotlights also can 'punch' through the ambient

Fixed downlighting is usually your main ambient 

lighting - the canvas on which you layer other 

lighting. The kitchen has many functions, so 

consider dimming and zoning the ceiling lighting 

to change the ambience and use the space

A long, relaxing bath is a pleasure and can 

be heightened with the right accent lighting. 

However, the primary function of your bathroom 

is task orientated so select bright ambient light 

to meet this need. 

To help create the perfect mood in your 

bathroom the Elan lighting product can be 

installed with a dimmer. 

Ingress Protection (IP Rating) 

It is important to ensure that all bathroom lighting 

is well protected from water, either directly or 

in the atmosphere. The IP rating scheme is a 

standard that rates a light's suitability for use in 

humid conditions. The specific rating depends 

on the proximity to water sources. All of our 

bathroom lighting has a minimum rating of 

IP44 with some downlights rated IP65, ideal 

for use in showers.
