glencoeanchor.com life & arts the glencoe anchor | June 21, 2018 | 33 ‘A living death disease’ Glencoe resident suffers from ME, rallies for a cure Libby Elliott Freelance Reporter As a professional videographer, avid traveler, hiker, kickboxer and mother of two busy children, longtime Glencoe resident Ceil Rothbart spent most of her adult life in near constant motion. “I was very active,” said Rothbart, age 66. “If I had a half-hour in between appointments, I’d find something to fill it.” But 11 years ago, Rothbart contracted a severe virus that dramatically changed her life. Now, instead of filling her days with work, travel and visits with grandchildren, Rothbart frequently finds herself bedridden, in extreme pain and unable to move. “I spend 70 percent of my life in bed, alone, while the world goes on without me,” she said. Rothbart has Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, or ME, a debilitating disease commonly but erroneously referred to as “chronic fatigue syndrome,” a name coined by team of doctors in the 1970s who believed ME was a psychiatric disease. Others called it “the yuppie flu,” attributing the symptoms to overwork, stress and lack of exercise. For decades, the misnomer grossly mischaracterized the illness, tainting perception of ME and stymying government-funded research to find a cure. “That name did terrible things for this disease,” said Rothbart, who, like many others with ME, spent years searching for a diagnosis and treatment for her condition. “ME is not fatigue. It’s an unrelenting, painful sense of complete and utter death.” The term “chronic fatigue syndrome” has since been rejected by members of the ME community, and many patient activists like Rothbart are now campaigning for greater awareness, money for research and legitimacy. Through research pioneered in recent years by just a handful of medical specialists, experts have learned that ME is a systemic neuro-immune condition, often triggered by a virus or infection. The disease is characterized by severe worsening of symptoms, including cognitive and neurological impairment; tachycardia that prevents many from maintaining an upright or sitting position; and post-exertional malaise, or PEM, often described as a “crash” in physical or mental energy following even a small amount of activity. After a “crash,” people with ME may require bed rest for days, weeks or even longer to recover. Others never fully recover. On what she calls a “good day,” Rothbart can manage only three to four hours of light activity before she must lie down. “This is a living death disease,” she said. “It takes anyone, any age, any sex or race, and, in a moment, reduces them to a weakness that precludes them from picking up a comb, showering, sitting or standing.” The Institute of Medicine estimates that between 1-2.5 million Americans suffer from ME, making it more widespread than MS and Parkinson’s disease. At the same time, ME receives only $2 in annual spending per patient from the National Institutes of Health — a stark contrast to the $100 per patient the NIH designates for Parkinson’s. After decades of suffering in silence, ME sufferers found hope and purpose in the recent activism of Jennifer Brea, a Harvard PhD candidate who contracted ME at age 28. “Unrest,” Brea’s documentary film chronicling her struggle with ME, debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, garnering widespread attention and winning the top prize for editing. Brea produced the film from her bed in Princeton, N.J. Rothbart co-sponsored a screening of the film last November at Renaissance Theater in Highland Park. Brea also co-founded #MEAction, a global network of patients living with ME, and went on to spearhead the #MillionsMissing movement, a series of protests where hundreds of empty shoes were displayed outside government buildings in tribute to the millions of people suffering from ME who are housebound or bedbound. An estimated 100,000 people in Illinois are living with ME. Rothbart and other sufferers helped organize two #MEAction rallies in Chicago, one in September 2016, and the second on May 12, 2018 in a park opposite the Drake Hotel. “We’re working toward an equal playing field,” she said. “We need funding for diagnostic testing, funding for clinical trials and funding for treatment centers.
