In Memoriam
Margaretta Connell Lane
Margaretta Connell
Lane, 101, of Lake Forest,
died quietly on June 8. She
grew up in Richmond Hill,
N.Y. and went through
school there. She enjoyed
two years at Brooklyn
College, then began a career
working under WB
Donovan, later known as
“Wild Bill,” the father of
the OSS, subsequently the
CIA. In 1939, she married
her husband and became
the consummate corporate
wife, moving with each
promotion and making
a beautiful home for her
family in each new city.
She enjoyed bridge, golf,
bowling and curling and
made new friends with
each activity. She volunteered
at Lake Forest Hospital
and at Balmoral when
she moved to Lake Forest
Place. She and her husband
were active members
of the Knollwood Club
and enjoyed traveling the
world.
She is survived by her
son, Charles A. Lane, Jr
(The Rev. Wendy); grandchildren,
Lucy C., Hilary
D., Jack Wonham and Cal
Wonham. She was preceded
in death by her loving
husband of 56 years,
Charles A. Lane.
The Lane family appreciates
the wonderful care
and comfort given to Margaretta
by the entire staff at
Assisted Living, especially
her personal caregivers:
Angella, Paulette, Jehan,
Carman, and Dahlian.
In lieu of flowers, donations
to The Church of
the Holy Spirit, 400 East
High School in Pittsburgh,
Pa. in 1942, followed by
Marrying in 1948, she supported
and loved her husband
and life partner, Jack,
until his death in 2001.
According to Jack, Kelly
“brought out the best in
me and overlooked the rest
of me.” As a practicing obstetrics
nurse, she assisted
in countless deliveries.
Having left formal nursing
several decades ago to
raise her family, she continued
to nurture and heal
the spirit of all who had the
fortune to meet her. Truly
one in a million, Kelly
will continue to touch and
guide her loved ones with
her strength and wisdom.
