Last time I wrote
to you all, I spoke
about wanting to
get more involved in my
community. I was looking
for ways to continue
volunteering after moving
to Downers Grove following
my college graduation
last year. I tried to search
different organizations, but
unfortunately, for a lot of
them, they needed volunteers
during the day. With
my job at the paper, that
wasn’t an option for me, so
I kept looking.
After going through my
list, I remembered I had
volunteered at the nursing
home my great-grandmother
lived at when I was a
sophomore in high school.
I went to their website to
fill out a volunteer inquiry
form, and received an email
back just hours later. I
called the volunteer coordinator
and we set up a time
for me to come in and have
an orientation. Of course,
since I had volunteered
before, I was familiar with
a lot of the policies and
activities.
As soon as the coordinator
gave me a tour of the
home and introduced me to
a couple of the residents,
I knew I was in the right
place.
I’ve always had a passion
for helping senior citizens.
I think it’s important they
interact with as many people
as possible and engage
in the activities they enjoy,
whether that be bingo,
bunco, listening to music
or watching movies. When
I volunteered there many
years ago, I helped out
with happy hour, where the
residents gathered in the
cafe area and could have
beverages and snacks for
an hour. I also would visit
with the residents and talk
with them, share stories
with each other, and just
enjoy each other’s company.
It was a rewarding
experience, and I’m happy
to be doing it again.
Every other Saturday
for the past month or so,
I have volunteered during
bingo games and helped
residents with their playing
cards, or passed out money
when they win. I’ve helped
out three lovely women
each time, and it’s always
so wonderful to see how
excited they are when they
win, even if it’s just 25
cents. One lady won $1 and
said, “I can’t remember the
last time I got a dollar!” It
just warms your heart to see
them really enjoying themselves.
Often times, they
can’t hear the numbers being
called out, or need help
covering the numbers, and
they’re always so appreciative
when you help them.
The seniors I volunteer with
are always so full of life and
just want someone to talk
to. I remember when my
great-grandmother was in
the nursing home, and she
loved whenever we would
come visit her. We played
bunco during happy hour,
and would always take her
outside so she could see
the people walking around.
She loved to people watch.
It brings back memories
being there again, but I’m
happy to continue working
with the seniors and helping
make their days a bit
brighter.
