The featured selections used to change once a month, but they will now be sticking around a little longer. Each quarter, the menu is to get a new look, displaying the featured burger and shake front and center, which works out for the establishment, because General Manager Art Chmiel said guests are consistently looking to try something new. The current featured items are the Bayou Burger and the pistachio-mint shake. Burger 21’s Bayou Burger features a turkey and andouille sausage patty, served on a brioche bun and paired with blackened shrimp, remoulade, Sriracha and a bed of coleslaw. “I think it’s the best of all worlds because you’ve got turkey, sausage and then you also have shrimp,” Chmiel said. “ ... A lot of people are looking for flavor and a little bit of kick and it kind of appeals to everybody in that sense.” The pistachio-mint shake creates a surprising and delicious flavor combination, said Chmiel. “I think a lot of people are surprised when they taste it [at] how good it is, including myself,” he said. “The first time I heard about it I was like ‘mint pistachio?’ ... but after I tried it I was like, ‘Wow.’” Luckily, for those who are creatures of habit, the menu Burger 21’s current featured items are its Bayou Burger and the pistachio mint shake, both of which will remain available until July 20, as the restaurant chain rotates its featured items quarterly. Amanda Stoll/22nd Century Media staples remain intact, but the Bayou Burger and the pistachio-mint shake will only be available until July 20. Chmiel said the new featured selections remain a secret, even to him, until the week prior. During the warmer months, Chmiel said the outdoor patio becomes popular with guests looking for some fresh air and sunshine, but there is plenty of seating inside for those rainy days, too. Further, now that construction projects on La Grange Road are completed, Chmiel said he hopes business will pick back up for both Burger 21 and surrounding restaurants. “This is the year that it’s really done,” he said. “There’s not a single landscaping [truck] or barrier or construction thing going on.” With the closest Burger 21 location being in Michigan, Chmiel said the Orland Park location has become a destination in the south suburbs, with people driving in from the city and places such as Indiana and Kankakee to enjoy their menu offerings. “There’s certain services and restaurants and things available here in Orland that aren’t available in any of those other communities,” he said. The Burger 21 menu includes sliders, chicken tenders, salads and a children’s menu, but the real stars of the show are their burgers and shakes. Recently, the establishment began offering two different sized beef patties, with a lighter 4.5-ounce option available in addition to the 6.4-ounce burger. Chmiel said staples like the Cheesy Burger ($6.49), with American cheese, tomato and lettuce on a brioche bun, and the Bacon Cheesy ($7.19), with bacon and onion, are popular with restaurant-goers, but they are not the only ones that get attention. The BBQ Burger ($7.69), with bacon, barbecue sauce, tomato, cheddar cheese, lettuce and onion strings on a brioche bun, is another popular selection on the everyday menu. Some non-traditional recipes also top the best-seller list such as the Tex Mex burger ($8.19), with bacon, tomato, chipotle jalapenos, guacamole, lettuce, onion strings and smoked Gouda cheese. Chmiel said the Cinco Burger ($7.69), with cilantro, sour cream, guacamole, salsa, jalapenos, lettuce, tomato and Monterey Jack Burger 21 14650 South La Grange Road in Orland Park Hours 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday- Thursday 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday Phone: (708) 737-7952 Web: www.burger21.com cheese on a brioche bun, is frequently ordered with a black bean patty instead of beef. Other non-beef options include the Ahi Tuna burger ($10.49), with avocado and Sriracha aoli atop a tuna patty, as well as the Buffalo Chicken burger ($6.99), made with Frank’s buffalo sauce, Gorgonzola crumbles, ranch and lettuce. Side options include a regular order of crispy french fries for $2.59, or a 1-pound basket for $5.49. The shakes cannot be overlooked in spite of the large food selection, as Burger 21 has an almost equally large selection of milkshakes. Burger 21’s vanilla bean milkshake ($3.49) is served with cinnamon sugar and whipped cream, and its chocolate peanut butter shake ($4.49) is served with chocolate sauce and peanut butter cups on top. Another classic flavor includes the bananas foster shake ($4.49), with caramelized banana, caramel sauce drizzle and cinnamon sugar on top. For those looking for a more solid dessert, there also is a selection of cookies ($1.29 each) including chocolate chunk, double chocolate chip, peanut butter, oatmeal raisin and snickerdoodle.
