Veterans organization to
benefit from local stand
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
Lemonade stands are
a summer staple, but one
young Tinley Park resident’s
refreshments are extra sweet
as all of the money raised
from each delicious cup goes
towards helping local charities.
Kiera Fitzmaurice’s annual
lemonade stand was
once again open for business
outside her home on Sandy
Lane on the morning of Saturday,
June 16. As temperatures
rose so did lemonade
sales as members of the
community flocked to this
delicious fundraiser.
In the past five years, Kiera
has raised over $2,500
for a variety of causes – including
Fill the Boot for
MDA, American Brain Tumor
Association, Illinois
Fire Safety Alliance and Tinley
Wish – and this year, the
8-year-old do-gooder set her
sights on helping veterans by
donating to Midwest BBQ
for the Brave which helps
fund specially adapted, custom
designed smart homes
for catastrophically injured
service members.
“I want to help out people
that have done something for
us so I wanted to do something
for them,” said Kiera
Fitzmaurice.
Midwest BBQ for the
Brave president Gayla Smith
(Frankfort) was impressed
with Kiera’s generosity and
passion for giving back. “It’s
so cool,” she said. “Anytime
that children step up to the
plate and realize that they’re
so blessed to live in this
great country and they’re
willing to put in the work
to help people in need, it’s
heartwarming. Regardless
of whether it’s for veterans,
cancer research or helping
third-world countries – they
are all great causes – watching
children get involved
and having a caring heart is
so exciting especially to see
them start at such a young
age.”
Kiera’s father Liam
Fitzmaurice – a member of
the Tinley Park Fire Department
– is proud to support
his daughter and her mission
to give back. “One day she
came to me and said, ‘I want
to do a lemonade stand, but I
don’t want to keep the money.
I want to give it away,’”
he explained. “I thought that
was amazing and it shows
what a huge heart she has. I
thought it was a great idea.”
The Shaw Family of Tinley
Park – Roslyn, Ken, Annabelle
(7) and Katie (11) – were
happy to support the stand and
its beneficiary, Midwest BBQ
for the Brave. “This is great
because it’s about being part
of the community, getting out
there and doing something
good for other people,” said
Roslyn Shaw.
As for the lemonade, Annabelle
and Katie gave it
two thumbs up. “It’s good.
Tinley Park Public Safety CommiTTEE
Relocation plan for TPFD
firefighters recommended
Cody Mroczka, Editor
Some Tinley Park firefighters
have a better idea of where
they might be temporarily living
while on duty when Station 2 is
completely remodeled next year.
On June 12, the Public Safety
Committee recommended
the Board of Trustees approve
a purchase for a temporarily
2,000-square foot C-span tent
structure and the rental of construction
trailer living quarters
for the cost of $125,649. Fire
Chief Forest Reeder laid out two
different options, with the tent
structure gaining favor due its
multi-use purpose. Reeder said
the re-assembled equipment,
which will house fire vehicles for
the construction phase, will then
be given to Public Works for vehicle
storage. Trustee
William Brady asked about the
assembly time for the tent structure
and Reeder said it could be
moved and reassembled in 7 to
10 days.
“We have analyzed many potential
temporary sites for relocating
during construction but
cannot locate a site that will accommodate
us while still allowing
us to be in position to reach
our response time goals for both
lemonade
From Page 3
EMS and fire responses,” Reeder
wrote in an interoffice memo.
“We believe that the best temporary
solution available to us
now is to begin the design and
construction of a new parking
lot/driveway for the new station
on the east side of the existing
station and to erect a shelter and
construction trailer.”
Reeder said this solution would
keep response time to between 4
and 6 minutes while the new Station
2 (formerly Station 47) is under
construction.
“In a previous life I’ve lived in
in one during the (construction)
period,” Reeder said. “At the end
it was worth a little bit of time.”
With recommendation from
the committee, the item can move
to a future agenda for a Board of
Trustees vote.
It tasted like lemons,” said Annabelle
Shaw.
Along with raising money to
support Midwest BBQ for the
Brave, Kiera and her friends
and volunteers, Sophia and Colin
Cescato, were spreading the
word about the organization’s
annual fundraiser which will take
place at CD & ME on Sept. 7.
They also sold hand-made bracelets
and accessories to generate
even more donations.
Smith explained that in planning
for the annual Midwest
BBQ for the Brave event, she always
pairs the great cause with a
fantastic experience. This year’s
highly anticipated fundraiser will
feature all of the highlights of
previous years while adding even
more ways to support wounded
veterans. New in 2018, Midwest
BBQ for the Brave is offering
special Patriot Party packages
for groups of 20 which feature
Police commander position
Village staff recommended
amending an ordinance to allow
its’ new police commander position
be filled through Tinley Park’s
recruitment process, similar to
how the police chief and deputy
chief are hired. The commander
position will replace one of the
two deputy police chief positions
as recommended by a Northwestern
University staff study. However,
the current code allows the
commander position to be hired
through the Civil Service Commission,
which “will add months
to the recruitment timeline,” according
to a memo from Village
Manager David Neimeyer.
The candidate selected would
still have to be appointed to the
position by a Board vote along
with the new police chief in
which the Village received close
to 30 applications still under
review. Trustee Michael Glotz
questioned why the Village wanted
to go through the recruitment
process instead of the Civil Service
Commission and wondered
if lower ranked officers could essentially
jump higher ranked officers
for the postion. Niemeyer
and Interim Police Chief Charles
Faricelli said the commander position
is more of an upper management
position, typically not
hired through the commission
process and there would also be a
set of criteria the candidate would
have to meet for consideration.
Discussion also dove into
whether or not there should be a
base line test or assessment to go
along with the application. The
recommended ordinance change
could be discussed by the Board
as early as June 19.
reserved seating, drink tokens,
food and more.
Kiera hoped that the hot weather
would provoke record-setting
sales and further raise awareness
to the good work being done at
Midwest BBQ for the Brave.
“People get really hot and they
want something to drink so if
they drive by they’ll probably
want some lemonade,” she said.
“You’ve got to stay hydrated.”
Tinley Cruise Night
complaints lead to
meeting with mayor
Cody Mroczka, Editor
A different setup this year for Tinley
Park’s weekly Cruise Nights has
drawn complaints from attendees
and stakeholders.
During a Special Board of Trustees
meeting on June 12, approximately
a half dozen people involved
with the classic car show, voiced
opposition to new safety regulations
implemented in 2018 that includes
the closure of north and southbound
Oak Park Avenue from 171st
Street to North Street as well as a
blocked off section that only allows
entry until 5 p.m. and exit after 8
p.m. In the previous six years, attendees
and drivers were able to
come and go as they pleased, organizers
said.
“I think it was a big mistake,” said
Jim Hudik, Commander of Bremen
VFW Post 2791. “This is hurting financially.”
Mayor Jake Vandenberg said the
changes were implemented based
on recommendations from the Tinley
Park Police Department who
reviewed a variety of plans dealing
with moving vehicles and pedestrian
safety. He said all it would take for
a momentarily distracted driver was
to swerve a couple of feet to potentially
cause injuries to children or
adults. Discussion also touched on
recent global terrorist attacks that
involved the use of vehicles as
weapons against mass gatherings of
people.
Organizers said the event’s track
record has been positive and good
for the downtown corridor, but car
enthusiasts are a close-knit group
who have been “turned off” by
the changes and as a result taking
their vehicles to other suburban
shows. Trustee Michael Glotz said
he personally noticed significantly
less cars than years past after attending
one of the first two events this
summer.
Cruise Nights Street/Parking
Information
• Oak Park Avenue is closed
from 171st Street to North Street
from 4:30 until 9 p.m.
• Eastbound and westbound
North Street remains open.
• Southbound Oak Park Avenue
(from 171st Street to the public
parking lot adjacent to Subway)
is accessible for residents and
businesses.
• Show cars must enter from
171st Street and proceed south,
filling spots from south to north
along Oak Park Avenue.
• Parking available in the lot
adjacent to Subway and in the lot
behind 17208-17216 Oak Park
Avenue.
• If Oak Park Avenue is full,
overflow parking is available in
the northwest Metra lot and on
173rd Street.
Roger Barton, a longtime village
resident and original organizer, said
the situation was “out of hand.”
“The barricades up right now
are unacceptable,” he said. “Cruise
Nights were one of the most popular
events this town has even seen.”
Vandenberg said he understood
the new setup was not perfect and
requested to meet with Cruise Night
organizers in an attempt to find solutions
to the current issues.
“It’s not the best case scenario,”
Vandenberg said. “That can change
in a second.”
Cruise Nights began on May
29 and runs from 5-9 p.m. every
Tuesday night throughout August.
The free event, presented by VFW
Post 2791, also features food and
beverages for sale as well as live DJ
music.

Tinley Park Plan Commission
Verizon’s request for monopole moving forward to Board
Tesla charging station
hearing postponed again
Cody Mroczka, Editor
A change in the form of a concession
in Verizon Wireless’ site
plans paved the way for unanimous
recommendations of approval by
the Plan Commission to construct
a new monopole.
On June 7, a quorum of commissioners
held a public hearing for petitioner
Bryan Donley on behalf of
the cellular carrier regarding a site
plan approval and special use permit
with variations. However, prior
to the meeting, Verizon agreed to
construct a masonry facade shelter
as per the Planning Code ordinance
to house the grounded equipment
as opposed to a previously proposed
steel platform that would
have required a variance.
“We feel this has been addressed
appropriately by the applicant,”
Planning Manager Kimberly Clark
said.
The other variation dealt with the
height of the monopole with Verizon
needing a 61-foot variance to build
the 161-foot pole with antennas located
within a ComEd easement on
a shared address at 8201 W. 163rd
Street. Verizon will also be required
to construct an enclosed six-foot
vinyl fence as well as the planting
of 18 evergreen trees. The Planning
Department also recommended using
a light tan facebrick as opposed
to a darker color to blend in with
nearby vegetation.
A separate open item dealt with
the location of the tower with the
Planning Department requesting
“evidence that no such existing
Village-owned property meeds the
needs of the Petitioner.” The only
potential nearby property, Fire Station
#2, is currently under discussions
for major renovations and
does not have the existing equipment
to co-locate on. Clark said
with those plans still being considered,
the Fire Department was
not ready to allocate any possible
future land at this time.
“Fire Station #2 is potentially
close enough, but the challenge is
the site is still being developed,”
Clark said. “So, the answer is no.”
As a condition of approval for
the special use permit, the motion
adopted by the Plan Commission
requires Verizon to address outstanding
Public Works and engineering
items prior to the issuance
of a building permit. Commissioners
Ken Shaw, Peter Kroner, Eduardo
Mani, Angela Gatto, Chuck
Augustyniak and Tim Stanton all
voted in favor. Commissioners Lucas
Engle, John Curran, and Garrett
Gray were absent.
“We appreciate you guys working
with us and willing to work
with staff,” Kroner said.
Public hearing, workshop
postponed
The Plan Commission unanimously
opened then tabled a public
hearing for petitioner Christina Suarez
of Black and Veach on behalf
of Tesla Motors for a request to
construct a supercharging station.
This is the third instance where
Tesla has requested additional time
and the Plan Commission again
agreed to reschedule until its next
meeting on June 21.
Tesla has requested a special use
permit as a substantial deviation
with exceptions to the Brookside
Marketplace Planned Unit Development
within the parking area of
lot 13 in the B-3 Zoning District
located at 7204 W. 191 Street.
Clark said the hold up appeared
to be with Tesla’s new design plans
which are waiting review from the
landlord of the property. She said
the Planning Department has not received
or reviewed any new plans.
Kroner requested Clark attempt to
gather more information from Tesla
and also ask them to send a representative
at the next meeting to “at
least tell us what’s going on.”
The last item of the agenda was
also postponed as the Plan Commission
unanimously approved the
continuation of a workshop for petitioner
Haitham Abuzir.
Abuzir has requested a site plan
approval and special use permit
for the construction of a residential
apartment on the second floor
in the B-3 Zoning District located
at 6787 W. 159th Street. Clark said
the petitioner is relocating an accounting
business into Tinley Park
and also plans to rent out some of
the office space within. The workshop
is expected to continue on
June 21 as Abuzir was reportedly
ill and unable to attend.
Commissioner steps down
Peter Kroner informed the Plan
Commission he had submitted a
notice of resignation to Mayor
Jake Vandenberg on June 6 and
this would be his last meeting.
Kroner served on the volunteeradvisory
group for more than two
years along with Chairman Shaw
and Commissioner Stanton. Kroner
said he would seek nor accept
another appointment to the Plan
Commission, but he encouraged
fellow members of the community
to give it a try.
“It’s a great way to get involved
in the community,” he said.
Shaw thanked Kroner for his
time and applauded his contributions
over the years, describing
Kroner as a “sincere, strong Tinley
Park advocate.”
“You always did your homework
and never shied away from asking
tough questions,” Shaw said.
“You’ll be missed.”
7 national awards go to 22nd Century Media
Staff Report
For the sixth straight year,
22nd Century Media is a national
award-winner.
The National Newspaper
Association recognized 22nd
Century Media, the parent
company of The Tinley Junction,
with seven awards for
editorial excellence in its annual
Better Newspaper Contest.
The competition, which
is judged by third-party media
professionals, welcomed
1,405 entries from 115 outlets
across 38 states, and the
winners will be recognized
at an awards breakfast Sept.
29 in Norfolk, Virginia.
“Our journalists work
hard to provide unmatched
coverage of their communities,
and they make us proud
every day,” Publisher Joe
Coughlin said. “Receiving
recognition like this, especially
from your peers, is an
added bonus.”
Two 22nd Century Media
newspapers — The Tinley
Junction and The New Lenox
Patriot — were honored
twice, while The Orland
Park Prairie, The Highland
Park Landmark and Malibu
Surfside News picked up one
award each. For The Tinley
Junction, Managing Editor
Bill Jones and freelance
journalist Laurie Fanelli
combined on a unique, firsthand
storytelling venture after
Paul McCartney came to
town that earned them third
place for Best Performing
Arts Story.
“Bill Jones used a creative,
three-pronged approach to
cover a two-concert series
by legendary musician Sir
Paul McCartney,” the judge
wrote in part of Jones and
Fanelli’s work. “Rather than
writing a one-voice review
of the concert, Jones sought
multiple voices.
Freelance photographer
Bob Klein earned honorable
mention for his Tinley Junction
photo of Mayor Jacob
Vandenberg celebrating his
win on election night.
“Classic election night jubilation
picture,” the judge
wrote. “Well composed.”
Over 11 years of competitions,
22nd Century Media
publications have earned
175 regional and national
awards for editorial excellence,
including more than
30 first-place honors. The
Junction has won 27 editorial
awards in 9 years of
competitions.
Tinley Park Mayor Jake Vandenberg celebrating his win on
election night in 2017 received honorable mention in the
2018 National Newspaper Association’s Better Newspaper
Contest. BOB KLEIN/22nd Century Media
Local fallen soldier to be honored at NASCAR race
T.J. Kremer III
Contributing Editor
Thursday, June 28, will
mark the beginning of a
special weekend at Joliet’s
Chicagoland Motor Speedway.
It’ll be Stars and Stripes
weekend, where NASCAR
and the speedway will team
up to highlight our nation’s
military members, past, present
and future.
Among the sea of red,
white blue, placed firmly
on NASCAR driver and US
Navy reservist’s Jesse Iwuji’s
car, will be an homage to one
of Mokena’s favorite sons,
lost too soon while fighting
in Afghanistan: Pfc. Aaron
Toppen.
It’s been a long, winding
journey for Aaron to end up
on a vehicle that can travel
nearly 200 mph, a journey
that began at the speedway
in 2014, just months after his
death.
Guido Falaschetti —
whose son, Gino, was a
close friend of Aaron’s since
second grade — decided to
make a large banner to hang
and T-shirts for himself and
his group of tailgating friends
to wear to honor Aaron that
year.
“I brought one of the banners,
and we hung it up at our
tent, and people were coming
by and they recognized
Aaron’s name and his picture,”
Falaschetti said. “And
we had so many people just
stopping by saying, ‘Wow, I
saw that on that on the news.
I saw the procession going to
the cemetery from Midway,
back and forth.’ And we had
so many people who came
and donated money and said,
‘You know what?! Donate
this to the family, donate this
to the armed forces.’ And it
was beautiful.”
The group had already
been collecting money at
the race for various charities
since 2001. But when Toppen
was killed, they decided to
turn their efforts to supporting
the Toppen family and
Toppen Foundation.
“When Aaron passed
away, the guys decided that
that’s a charity we’re going
to support and keep his name
alive,” Dell said.
Bridgeview Bank, Dell’s
employer, has long supported
the military community, having
donated about $2.6 million
to various military-based
charitable organizations over
the years. It’s a cause that the
bank’s President, Todd Jones,
is passionate about, Dell said.
So, when Dell started telling
his coworkers and supervisors
about his group of
friends and the part they play
in keeping Toppen’s memory
going, it seemed like a natural
fit for Bridgeview Bank
to step in and lend its hand at
participating, too. And since
the bank already sponsored a
NASCAR car, the one driven
by Iwuji, the group no had
access to a literal vehicle to
further Toppen’s legacy.
“I was talking to the President
[of Bridgeview Bank],
Todd Jones, about the group
and the guys and what we do,
and we started talking about
Aaron and how we want to
keep Aaron’s name alive, and
we want to have people know
about him,” Dell said. “And
[Jones] had an idea: ‘Well,
why don’t we put something
on the car to honor him?’”
And so Falaschetti, who
by now had gotten to know
the rest of the Toppen family,
brought Aaron’s mother,
Pam, the news about the
plans for next week’s race.
It just so happened that
Pam’s husband passed four
months before Aaron, and it
was on her husband’s birthday
that she got the call from
Falaschetti to let her know
about the race.
“It was a pretty emotional
thing,” Pam said. “Everytime
something strange like
that comes up out of the
clear blue it’s like a Godsend
thing. You feel like, hey, he’s
up there and he’s still making
sure… And it’s for him and
what he stood for that we will
continue to do this.”
The Toppen organization
— which goes by the name
Our Fallen Hero in Memory
of Pfc. Aaron Toppen and is
currently awaiting approval
for 501(c)3 status — supports
numerous charitable
organizations, including the
Pat Tillman Foundation,
Lincolnway Special Recreation
Association, Puppies
Behind Bars, Operation Warrior
Wishes, the Fisher House
Foundation, a Lincoln-Way
East scholarship and a veterans
food drive through
Parkview Christian Church
in Orland Park.
Pam said there were two
choices the family had when
Aaron was killed: be mad or
be involved and help others
as much as they can.
“We have met so many
wonderful people by doing
these charities and raising
these funds for these different
charities. It’s just been amazing,”
Pam said.
In another strange twist on
Aaron’s path to NASCAR,
President of Chicagoland
Speedway, Scott Paddock,
happens to also be a member
of Parkview, where the
Toppens are also members,
so Paddock has a familiarity
with the Toppen’s and Aaron’s
story.
“For it to come full circle
now, here to the racetrack,
is really kind of ironic, and
maybe it’s kind of poetic
and meant to be that he’ll be
honored now and his memory
will continue to stay alive
in a very powerful way to
Thursday’s ARCA race,”
Paddock said.
And for Aaron to get the
national exposure that a
NASCAR race broadcast in
175 countries will bring is
kind of a big deal.
“It’s a pretty big platform,
and I think it just reinforces
what we want to convey, and
what NASCAR wants to convey,
with our appreciation for
our brave service men and
women, and Aaron is certainly
one of them,” Paddock
said.
For Pam, the opportunity
to spread Aaron’s message
through the help of complete
strangers can be shocking,
but is certainly welcome.
“It’s amazing to my daughters
and I that it happens and
it continues to happen when
we least expect it,” Pam
said. “I don’t know where
we would be without the
outpouring of support of the
community, friends, family,
church. I mean, it’s just been
amazing, and it’s been four
years now and it’s still happening…
Life goes on, and
we have a new chapter in our
life, but we don’t want to forget
that chapter.”

CCSD146 receives achievement for excellence in financial reporting
SUBMITTED BY COMMUNITY
CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL DISTRICT 146
District 146 was recently notified
that the Government Finance
Officers Association (GFOA) recognized
the District’s 2017 comprehensive
annual financial report
with the Certificate of Achievement
for Excellence in Financial
Reporting.
According to GFOA, the Certificate
of Achievement is the highest
recognition in the area of governmental
accounting and financial
reporting. Attainment of this certificate
represents a significant accomplishment
by a government
and its management.
“Time and again the District’s
Business Department is recognized
by organizations for its reporting
and accountability,” said Dr. Jeff
Stawick, Superintendent. “Our
Director of Business Services Jeff
Charleston and his team do a commendable
job in putting together
the District’s financial reports.
They certainly deserve this recognition
and the District applauds
their fine work and sound business
practices.”
The comprehensive annual financial
report is judged by an
impartial panel, and was found
to meet the high standards of the
GFOA program. One standard is
demonstrating a spirit of full disclosure
to clearly communicate
the District’s financial story and
motivate potential users to read
the report.
Community Consolidated
School District 146 is comprised
of Central Middle School, Fierke
Education Center, Fulton School,
Kruse Education Center, and Memorial
School. Students from Tinley
Park, Orland Park, and Oak
Forest attend District 146 schools.

FROM THE ORLAND PARK PRAIRIE
Two teachers honored for saving a
life during Orland Days
The Norm Meyer Special Kids/
People Day at Orland Days is usually
a happy day as special needs
students from all over the area
have the festival all to themselves
for a couple of hours.
Thanks to a pair of Orland District
135 teachers, the special day
was kept happy and they prevented
a potential death during this
year’s event on May 31.
Center School instructors Veronica
Morales and Sandy Guendling
were honored with
ABCDE Awards by the district
board on June 11 for their quick
thinking in saving a choking female
student during the event.
“Veronica performed abdominal
thrusts on one of my students …
she was so calm and never hesitated
to help the student, which
shows her dedication to kids and
helping others,” Guendling wrote
when nominating Morales for the
award.
“[The student] had a piece of
food lodged in her throat. Swiftly
and safely, Veronica performed
abdominal thrusts, allowing the
piece of food to be dislodged and
the student to resume her planned
activities,” Assistant Superintendent
Lynn Zeder added in a nominating
statement.
Zeder also praised Guendling.
“Sandy acted in a compassionate
way, maintaining the student’s
physical and emotional well-being,”
Zeder said. “She displayed
immense compassion for the student
following her experience.”
Frankfort woman receives award
for monarch conservation efforts
The Illinois state butterfly has
seen a steady decrease in population
over the past 20 years, according
to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service, and local woman Kay
MacNeil is leading an effort to
protect them.
MacNeil recently won a national
Award of Honor in Philadelphia
for her work with Milkweeds for
Monarchs, a national and now
global movement to plant milkweeds
and increase the number of
safe habitats for monarchs. She
has sent more than 8,000 seed
packets of milkweed this year locally
and as far as Nevada, California,
Canada and Puerto Rico.
“Receiving the award was very
exciting,” MacNeil said. “If every
gardener had a milkweed plant our
problems would be solved.”
As the bee, bird and butterfly
chairman for the Garden Club of
Illinois District 8, MacNeil started
the project three years ago because
she saw the need to aid the
declining population of monarchs.
“The numbers are down by 90
percent of what they used to be
years ago,” MacNeil said. “Monarchs
face a lot of challenges like
deforestation and global warming.
The drop in milkweed is the culprit
for their low numbers.”
Monarchs lay their eggs on the
milkweed and the caterpillar then
eats the milkweed, which are commonly
sprayed with dangerous
pesticides that endanger the butterfly.
MacNeil also raises monarchs
on her kitchen table when she
finds one in an unsafe habitat. She
provides the insects with a safe
place to grow and plenty of milkweed
to eat. After the caterpillars
undergo metamorphosis and transform
into butterflies, she releases
them into her garden, which is full
of milkweed and perennials. The
butterflies then join the 33 million
other monarchs as they migrate to
Mexico for the winter.
along Route 53.
DeAnn Falat, a trooper with the
“I’ve taken part in Special Olympics
Ramadan food drive helps fill pantry shelves
Amanda Stoll, Assistant Editor
With the summer months come
warmer temperatures and longer
days, but they can also bring emptier
shelves at food pantries.
But soon those shelves will be
brimming with donations from the
American Islamic Association’s
annual Ramadan food drive. The
Frankfort mosque has been contributing
to local pantries for more
than 15 years, and what began as
a simple Sunday School food drive
has blossomed into something
much larger.
When Khalid Mozaffar came up
with the food drive as a project for
his Sunday School class in November
of 2002, he could never have
known the types of community
connections the simple act of service
could foster in the surrounding
community.
Now the Sunday School principal
and director of outreach and
communication at the mosque,
Mozaffar recounted the first food
drive they did, and the phone call
he made to a food pantry he found
in the yellow pages.
But when he got the voicemail
box, Mozaffar said he was surprised
to find out the pantry was
Khalid Mozaffar, director of outreach and communication at the American Islamic Association in Frankfort,
helped organize a Sunday school food drive in 2002, which has continued as an annual effort during the
month of Ramadan. AMANDA STOLL/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
located at the Tinley Park United
Methodist Church.
Just over a year after the 9/11
attacks, he said he did not expect
to get a response from a Christian
church but left a message anyway.
Thankfully, he was wrong.
Register for Trinity Lutheran’s
‘Shipwrecked’ bible study week
SUBMITTED BY TRINITY LUTHERAN
CHURCH
Tinley Park’s Trinity Lutheran
Church is now taking registration
for “Shipwrecked Rescued by Jesus
VBS. The free classes run from
9 a.m. to 12 p.m. from June 25-29
and are open to children 3-years-old
(must be potty-trained) through 6th
grade (entering 7th grade in the fall).
Children will be placed in the grade
that they were in as of April 2018.
The children will sing, pray, hear a
bible story, play games, have a snack,
and make a craft each day. Children
also receive a free T-shirt.
Families are invited to a special
Closing Celebration at 11:25 a.m. on
June 29 and 11 a.m. on July 1 for the
Reveal Contemporary Worship service.
It will be a great time for fellowship
and an opportunity for parents to
see what the children have learned
during VBS week.
Pre-registration is strongly encouraged.
You may register online
at www.tlcs.org . Forms are also
available in the Church Narthex and
outside the Children’s Ministries office.
For further information, please
contact Lisa Redmond, Director of
Children’s Ministries at kids@tlcs.
9395 x231. Trinity Lutheran Church
is located at 6850 W. 159th St. in Tinley
Park.
“The next day I got a call from
Rev. Jim Young, who was the pastor
as Tinley Park United Methodist
Church at that time, and was all
excited,” Mozaffar said.
Young invited Mozaffar to drop
the food off in the collection box
at the church, which he did, except
there was more food than the box
could hold. When he left, Mozaffar
said there was food piled in and all
around that box.
Subsequent conversations with
Young, who came to thank members
of the Muslim congregation
after seeing the large donation,
turned into discussions about the
fallout from 9/11 and how members
of the Muslim community
were being treated in our area.
The two helped form an interfaith
group, SouthWest InterFaith Team,
which began as five churches and
one mosque. It has now grown to
include 13 churches, four mosques
and two synagogues.
SWIFT regularly brings together
people of Christian, Muslim and
Jewish faiths for lectures, group
picnics and community service
projects.
And it all began with a Sunday
School food drive.
For those interested in learning
more about Islam and having open
conversation with people of different
faiths, he encourages people to
attend SWIFT events such as the
Islam 101 lecture and the interfaith
picnics.
Overall, he said the hate is easy
to ignore because of the support
they have received from the community.
“We might be living in a bubble,
but our neighbors are the most
awesome,” Mozaffar said.
The Dish
Featured burger, shake add flavor to Burger 21 menu
Amanda Stoll, Assistant Editor
Most of Burger 21’s menu
stays the same from month
to month, but diners looking
for a little variety can
turn to a rotation of featured
burgers and shakes.
The featured selections
used to change once a
month, but they will now
be sticking around a little
longer.
Each quarter, the menu
is to get a new look, displaying
the featured burger
and shake front and center,
which works out for the establishment,
because General
Manager Art Chmiel
said guests are consistently
looking to try something
new.
The current featured
items are the Bayou Burger
and the pistachio-mint
shake.
Burger 21’s Bayou Burger
features a turkey and andouille
sausage patty, served on
a brioche bun and paired
with blackened shrimp, remoulade,
Sriracha and a bed
of coleslaw.
“I think it’s the best of
all worlds because you’ve
got turkey, sausage and
then you also have shrimp,”
Chmiel said. “ ... A lot
of people are looking for
flavor and a little bit of
kick and it kind of appeals
to everybody in that
sense.”
The pistachio-mint shake
creates a surprising and delicious
flavor combination,
said Chmiel.
“I think a lot of people are
surprised when they taste it
[at] how good it is, including
myself,” he said. “The
first time I heard about it I
was like ‘mint pistachio?’ ...
but after I tried it I was like,
‘Wow.’”
Luckily, for those who are
creatures of habit, the menu
Burger 21’s current featured items are its Bayou Burger and the pistachio mint shake, both of which will remain available
until July 20, as the restaurant chain rotates its featured items quarterly. Amanda Stoll/22nd Century Media
staples remain intact, but
the Bayou Burger and the
pistachio-mint shake will
only be available until July
20.
Chmiel said the new featured
selections remain a
secret, even to him, until the
week prior.
During the warmer
months, Chmiel said the
outdoor patio becomes popular
with guests looking for
some fresh air and sunshine,
but there is plenty of seating
inside for those rainy days,
too.
Further, now that construction
projects on La
Grange Road are completed,
Chmiel said he hopes
business will pick back up
for both Burger 21 and surrounding
restaurants.
“This is the year that
it’s really done,” he said.
“There’s not a single landscaping
[truck] or barrier
or construction thing going
on.”
With the closest Burger
21 location being in Michigan,
Chmiel said the Orland
Park location has become a
destination in the south suburbs,
with people driving
in from the city and places
such as Indiana and Kankakee
to enjoy their menu offerings.
“There’s certain services
and restaurants and things
available here in Orland that
aren’t available in any of
those other communities,”
he said.
The Burger 21 menu includes
sliders, chicken tenders,
salads and a children’s
menu, but the real stars of
the show are their burgers
and shakes.
Recently, the establishment
began offering two
different sized beef patties,
with a lighter 4.5-ounce option
available in addition to
the 6.4-ounce burger.
Chmiel said staples like
the Cheesy Burger ($6.49),
with American cheese, tomato
and lettuce on a brioche
bun, and the Bacon
Cheesy ($7.19), with bacon
and onion, are popular with
restaurant-goers, but they
are not the only ones that
get attention.
The BBQ Burger ($7.69),
with bacon, barbecue sauce,
tomato, cheddar cheese, lettuce
and onion strings on
a brioche bun, is another
popular selection on the everyday
menu.
Some non-traditional recipes
also top the best-seller
list such as the Tex Mex
burger ($8.19), with bacon,
tomato, chipotle jalapenos,
guacamole, lettuce, onion
strings and smoked Gouda
cheese.
Chmiel said the Cinco
Burger ($7.69), with cilantro,
sour cream, guacamole,
salsa, jalapenos, lettuce,
tomato and Monterey Jack
cheese on a brioche bun, is
frequently ordered with a
black bean patty instead of
beef.
Other non-beef options
include the Ahi Tuna burger
($10.49), with avocado and
Sriracha aoli atop a tuna
patty, as well as the Buffalo
Chicken burger ($6.99),
made with Frank’s buffalo
sauce, Gorgonzola crumbles,
ranch and lettuce.
Side options include
a regular order of crispy
french fries for $2.59, or a
1-pound basket for $5.49.
The shakes cannot be
overlooked in spite of the
large food selection, as
Burger 21 has an almost
equally large selection of
milkshakes.
Burger 21’s vanilla bean
milkshake ($3.49) is served
with cinnamon sugar and
whipped cream, and its
chocolate peanut butter
shake ($4.49) is served with
chocolate sauce and peanut
butter cups on top.
Another classic flavor
includes the bananas foster
shake ($4.49), with caramelized
banana, caramel
sauce drizzle and cinnamon
sugar on top.
For those looking for a
more solid dessert, there
also is a selection of cookies
($1.29 each) including
chocolate chunk, double
chocolate chip, peanut
butter, oatmeal raisin and
snickerdoodle.

No Money Down at Westgate Manor in Peotone
New Construction Homes from $239,900
Thinking hard about renting
instead of owning? Think again,
say the experts—who recommend
crunching the numbers carefully
to see which side of the fence the
grass is greener on. More often
than not, the greener side—as in
grass and money—is the one you
end up owning.
While it’s true that home
mortgage interest rates are slowly
on the rise, the same can be said
of monthly rents for residential
units, especially considering that
the greater Chicagoland rental
market has become more active
in recent months.
“Shoppers who don’t have
much of a down payment saved
up or who are worried about
qualifying for a loan due to a
moderate income can still share
in the great American dream of
homeownership,” said Bryan
Nooner, President of Distinctive
Home Builders. “Through our
preferred lender a new home can
be had with no money down so
they don’t have to worry about
raising money for closing costs
or a down payment. While some
conditions apply, for first-time
buyers and shoppers on a tight
budget, it’s the perfect scenario.”
“Over the long term, however,
the advantages of purchasing
and owning your own residence
significantly outnumber the
plusses of renting,” added
Nooner. “The most important
distinction between renting and
owning is the ability to build
equity in your property, which is
only possible with the latter. When
you purchase a home and pay a
monthly mortgage, the portion
applied toward principal every
month is your money coming
back to you—a reflection of the
value of your equity. One of the
other major boons to buying
a home is the ability to deduct
(within certain limits), your
property taxes and mortgage loan
interest on your yearly federal and
state income tax returns.”
The financing offer applies to
Westgate Manor buyers who opt
for a home mortgage loan through
Distinctive Home Builders’
preferred lender, who is available
to meet with home shoppers on
the weekends or by appointment
at Distinctive Home Builders
Single Family Home Center in
Manhattan at 24458 S. Rt. 52,
Manhattan, IL. 60422. Some
conditions apply, see a Distinctive
Home Builders representative for
complete details.
Peotone is a family-friendly
village and is one of the best kept
secrets among new home seekers,
according to Nooner. Several
factors attracted Distinctive
Home Builders to build 38 homes
at Westgate Manor, not the least
of which was its convenient
location between Interstate 57
and Illinois Route 50 and easy
access to I-80. Commuters enjoy
several nearby train stations and a
35-minute drive to Chicago.
Distinctive offers a wide variety
of home styles and selections
— buyers can choose among 12
different brick and frame construction
designs, each available in
three to eight different elevations.
Square footages span 1,600 to
2,500 for ranches and 1,800 to
3,000 for two-story homes. Prices
start at $239,900.
Westgate Manor offers three
to four bedrooms, two to threeand-a-half
baths, full basement,
formal dining room, vaulted, tray
or nine-foot first-floor ceilings, a
large kitchen with custom maple
cabinets, family room or great
room, and concrete driveways.
Depending on the home selected,
other standard amenities can
include a living room, den,
dinette, a tray or vaulted ceiling
in the master bedroom, as well
as dual-zoned heating and air
conditioning.
Premium standard features
included at Westgate Manor are
brick front exteriors on the first
floor, free basements in most
models, ceramic tile or hardwood
floors in the
kitchen, baths
and foyer; and
custom maple
cabinets. Kitchen
cabinets feature
solid wood
construction (no
particle board),
have solid wood
drawers with dove tail joints,
which is rare in the marketplace.
“When you build a new home
with Distinctive, you are receiving
a hand-crafted home with
custom made cabinets,” noted
Nooner. This year, Distinctive is
celebrating 32 years of building
thousands of homes throughout
the Will and south Cook County
areas.
Distinctive Home Builders, an
industry leading innovator, offers
the fastest build times (90 working
days) with a “Zero Punch List”
closing policy. Prior to closing,
each home undergoes a 100-point
checklist to insure the home
measures up to our high quality
standards.
Customers stay connected to the
progress of their home from start
to finish through Distinctive’s
unique construction portal.
Customers download the app to
stay in touch with their new home
24/7 from anywhere in the world.
The app allows customers to see
the progress of their home, access
their documents and easily share
photos and updates with family
and friends on social media.
As a semi-custom builder,
Distinctive Home Builders
can modify any of its standard
designs to cater to a customer’s
tastes, which means that moving
walls, adding extra windows or
even extending the garage are all
possible.
All homes are highly energy
efficient and are built to National
Energy Code guidelines. Every
home built has upgraded wall
and ceiling insulation values with
energy efficient windows and
high efficiency furnaces. Before
homeowners take possession of
their new home, a blower door test
is performed to verify that each
home passes a set of stringent
guidelines to insure homes are
tight and energy efficient.
“Ultimately, when you add up
all the pros of purchasing, most
owners inevitably gain more
tangible and intangible benefits
your own.”
than renters do,”
Nooner. said. “It
simply makes better
financial sense to
build equity, reduce
your taxes, and
make your money
grow
through
appreciation — all
while living in a
brand new home
that you can call
BOYS BASKETBALL
Andrew shooting aces take different college routes
JONATHAN BARLAS
Editorial Intern
Two key sharpshooters
on Andrew’s boys basketball
team, which won just
its second conference title
in school history in 2017-18,
are ready for different college
experiences in the sport.
Coming off of years of
struggling seasons, Andrew
recently found a remedy
to its heartache. Marking a
19-9 record in 2018, the T-
Bolts claimed a share of the
Southwest Suburban Red
Conference crown for the
first time in more than 20
years.
Evan Yerkes and Troy
Murphy, a pair of deadly
3-point threats, have chosen
their colleges.
But the dynamic duo made
far different decisions with
their college choices.
Murphy chose NCAA Division
III Central College
in Iowa, where he hopes to
make an impact on the court
sooner than later.
Yerkes earned a preferred
walk-on spot at the University
of Missouri, which
means the odds of him getting
meaningful minutes will
be tough as he is behind several
scholarship players on
the depth chart.
The 6-foot-3 guard passed
up several NAIA and DII offers.
He plans on pursuing
a degree in business administration
in the Fall. When
Missouri came knocking, he
opened the door with open
arms.
“I mean it’s SEC basketball,”
Yerkes said. “With
the fan base, coaching staff,
facilities, and overall atmosphere,
it was an opportunity
I couldn’t pass up. Words
can’t describe how thrilled I
am to get on campus and get
to work.”
While Yerkes has proven
to excel in all facets of the
game, his shooting remains
as his top skill, saying to
have shot over 45 percent
over the course of his high
school career.
Collecting multiple threepoint
records along the way,
Yerkes has more recently
claimed the title of Andrew’s
career leader in three-pointers
with 175 and qualified
for the preliminary round of
the Illinois High School Association
Class 4A 3-point
shooting contest.
“I think I am one of the
best shooters in the state,” he
said. “It was cool to be able
to break multiple records
in middle school and then
come in and do the same in
high school. It’s awesome
knowing and seeing your
name hung up on the gym
wall.”
Complimenting Yerkes’
unselfish style of play
was the 6-0 guard Murphy,
whose shooting ability also
proved to be unforgiving for
the T-Bolts’ opponents in his
varsity career.
Murphy had won the
IHSA Class 4A 3-Point
Showdown championship
in 2017, saying to have shot
over 40 percent from beyond
the 3-point line in his time as
a Thunderbolt.
Murphy plans to pursue a
degree in exercise science at
Central College.
“I’m very excited, Murphy
said. “When I visited
there, it just felt right. I want
to continue playing at a high
level in college and hopefully
win a national championship.”
Although Murphy looks
to replicate his success from
the arc in college, he remains
grounded in his journey to
become the most complete
player he can be.
“I want to be known as a
basketball player,” Murphy
Andrew graduate Evan Yerkes is going to be a preferred walk-on at Missouri next season. PHOTOS BY JEFF VORVA/22ND
CENTURY MEDIA
said. “I feel that the [3-point
championship] marks me as
a shooter, but I’d say the one
thing [the Andrew coaching
staff] did was mature me.
Never securing a spot taught
me to fight every day.”
Yerkes and Murphy described
the feeling of bringing
home the Thunderbolts’
second conference championship
in program history,
attributing it to the chemistry
of the team during its
outstanding season.
“It was surreal. The feeling
of knowing you’ve
made history is such a
unique and cool feeling,”
Yerkes said. “I’m not going
to say it wasn’t the growing
and bonding with the
guys because that happens
every season, but I would
definitely say our success
as a group and my success
as an individual has made
this season better than years
past.”
“The fact that we have
been playing with each other
since fourth grade gave us
a rare bond,” Murphy added.
“I think the system that
Coach [Dave] Wilson put us
in allowed us to beat more
talented teams, and when we
achieved our goal of winning
a conference championship,
making Andrew basketball
a respected program, I think
we did just that.”
Both court generals in
their own right, Murphy
applauded Yerkes on his
leadership as well as the
Troy Murphy is heading to Division III Central College in
Iowa, where he hopes to get playing time right away.
contagiousness of his determination
to be the best he
can be.
“[Yerkes] has impacted
Boom, boom, boom, boom - Johnson masters TKD
TOM O’CONNOR
Freelance Reporter
Through 14 years of experience,
Tinley Park’s Britney
Johnson, a martial artist with
numerous accolades to her
name, has maintained a need
to recycle, converting what
she has learned into reusable
material.
Johnson has perfected the
art of self-defense, staving
off those in pursuit of her
finest exploits, namely a
silver medal at the 2018 Illinois
State Tae Kwon Do
championship.
Her moves come in many
a variety.
With an open hand, rather
than a closed fist, she will, at
times, strike opponents with
her knuckles, a maneuver
better known as knife hands.
Then comes the sequel, a
roundhouse kick.
“She can do twenty spinning
kicks in the same spot
within like 10 seconds, like
boom, boom, boom, boom,”
said Master Sung Ho Kim,
the founder and owner of
Family Martial Arts in Mokena.
As this bona fide martial
artist ascended the ranks of
her craft, she receives a bonus
of recognition with each
promotion. What Johnson
gained in years, she matched
in trophies.
Given the sheer number
of trophies and medals she
has amassed, neither student
nor instructor can calculate
the running total. Even still,
there is little doubt concerning
her performance.
“A lot of gold,” Kim said.
Each triumph along the
way has led way to even
grander accomplishments.
Her medals, not to mention
the two- to three-foot
trophies Johnson has attained
throughout her career, have
flooded her household furniture,
submerging what once
Tinley Park’s Britney Johnson cried when she first tried Tae Kwon Do but 18 years later is an award winner and a teacher of the sport. PHOTO SUBMITTED
appeared to be a dresser.
Johnson has decided to
store these tokens of achievement
in a display case, but
at her success rate, she may
need more than just one.
“I have a little shelf I have
them on, but I have to like,
make it bigger,” Johnson
said.
A perennial finalist at both
the state and local levels,
Johnson remembers walking
into Family Martial Arts for
her first session as a fouryear-old,
the age at which
she dedicated her efforts to
Tae Kwon Do.
“When I first went there
I started crying and I didn’t
want to go on to the mat, but
everyone was very welcoming,”
Johnson said.
“She drooled for the first
testing and we had to clean it
up,” Kim added with a laugh.
With regards to age, Kim
has taught a wide demographic,
ranging from toddlers
to those in their 70s,
which means that Johnson,
now 18, is seemingly on the
younger side.
This youthful disciple of
Tae Kwon Do, who attends
Lincoln-Way East High
School, has encountered
dynamic opponents in the
field of competition and, yet,
her consistency, an attribute
Kim equates to persistence,
has never wavered.
Kim, who has competed in
the martial arts circuit for the
past three decades, recognizes
the singular, unparalleled
abilities unique to each individual;
although determination,
he says, tends to make
the most pronounced impact.
“Natural skill will help a
lot,” Kim said.
“She is very flexible and
very athletic too, but that
helps a lot. But training is
most important.”
In carrying such a mantle,
the primed veteran has
been adhering to a practice
regimen of five to six days
a week, nevertheless important
for an athlete with five
to six times more experience
than that of most.
Johnson has carried over
this seasoned knowledge in
becoming a teacher at Family
Martial Arts.
Her moves on and off the
mat have established an enduring
influence on those
with untapped potential.
“She is such a great role
model for hundreds of girls,”
Kim said.
“We have so many girls
in our school, so they just
look up to her. She is not
just good at like competition,
also she’s really good
at teaching.”
She has designed a lesson
plan rooted in her mastery
of martial arts principles.
Beyond instructing students
on the techniques, she allays
their concerns, all with a bit
of reflection on her past.
“When new students start
to come in, they usually feel
kind of nervous and I always
just tell them my experience,
and how I was nervous at
first,” Johnson said.
“But then once they get
onto the mat and I start
teaching them, they become
more comfortable with the
environment.”
Therein lies the definition
of what it means to recycle:
the means of re-purposing
wisdom for the sake of educating
the latest generation
of martial arts.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
10 Questions
with Mike Sherwood
Mike Sherwood completed
his junior year with Andrew’s
boys volleyball team
and the middle hitter was an
all-conference player in the
SouthWest Suburban.
Why is volleyball so
special to you?
It has given me so many
opportunities that I could
have never dreamed of experiencing.
Kind of like this
one!
What is the most
challenging part of the
sport?
I feel like the most challenging
part of the sport is
playing defense in the back
row. Passing is something I
find challenging because I
normally don’t have a lot of
opportunity to play positions
that require to do it.
What is your favorite
food?
My favorite food has to be
Japanese pan noodles served
at Tokyo Steak House,
which is also my favorite
restaurant.
If you could learn to do
anything, what would
you learn?
At this point in my life,
it would be how to get a 36
on the ACT. The amount of
practice tests I have had to
take to prepare for this test
has been insane.
The best/worst gift
you’ve ever received?
The best gift has to be an
Xbox 360 that the Easter
Bunny got for me which was
totally overkill for that holiday.
The worst present probably
is all the soap I get for
Christmas every year from
my Grandma. Not that it
isn’t appreciated, I just wish
it could be substituted for
something a little cooler.
What story does your
family always tell about
you?
My parents always tell
stories where the moral
winds up being; if Michael is
lost look up because he has
climbed something. Once,
I was found on the garage
roof.
If you were a celebrity,
what would you be
famous for?
I think it would be
for being a comedian. People
are always telling me
how funny I am.
photo submitted
If you were a crayon,
what color would you
be and why?
Red just like my hair.
If you had a
superpower, what
would it be?
Teleportation, to go anywhere
at any time would just
be ideal.
What separates you
from the other players
out there?
I feel as though I am the
complete package. I have
great academics as well as
a high level of play, so I am
excited to see what is next
for me.
RANDY WHALEN, Freelance Reporter
When Jim Holba found himself out of a
job as the Andrew softball coach following
the season in 2014, he wasn’t sure of his next
coaching stop.
It’s safe to say he found it and found success
at it too.
Holba, who is still a physical education
teacher at Andrew, has been the assistant
softball coach at Providence for the past
three seasons. Well, earlier this month he
was able to walk off the field holding a state
trophy for the first time as the Celtics captured
third place in Class 3A with an explosive
16-15 victory over Mt. Zion on June 9 at
EastSide Centre in East Peoria.
That capped off quite a year for the Celtics
(29-12), who lost their first four games
of the season before regrouping and putting
together a nailbitting playoff stretch which
saw them win five games by one run.
“I coached three regional champion teams
at Andrew,” said Holba, who had a 202-72
record at the school. “And the route we had
in Class 3A this season was as tough as anything.
We found ways to win those first four
games [all by a run]. Anyone of those teams
could have replaced us at state. But I’m glad
they didn’t and we were able to take third
place.”
It was the first state trophy team that Holba
has been a part of in his coaching or playing
career. Growing up in Frankfort, he was
a pitcher and outfielder in high school at the
one-and-only Lincoln-Way, graduating in
1994. He didn’t play baseball in college, but
did start his coaching career at that time. He
coached a 14u travel softball team, the Mokena
Diamonds, in 1995 and 1996.
His first teaching job was at Joliet West
and first head coaching job was the softball
coach at what was then a combined Joliet
Township team between 2002-04. In the
2004-05 school year, Holba got a P.E. job at
Andrew. When long-time softball coach Carrie
Cox stepped down after the 2006 season,
Holba took over as head coach and was there
between 2007-14.
“There were a lot of good, exciting moments
at Andrew, that I wouldn’t give up for
anything,” Holba said. “I still communicate
with some of the players from there.”
In 2015, Holba found himself not coaching
anything for the first time in 15 years.
“I took off that next spring,” Holba said.
As an assistant coach, Jim Holba, a former
head softball coach at Andrew, helped
Providence Catholic to a third-place finish
in the IHSA Class 3A tournament.
RANDY WHALEN/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
“After a stretch of 15 years I think I drove
my wife [Tina] a little crazy. My boys were
5 and 6 and in tee-ball, so I enjoyed seeing
them. But I missed coaching and [Providence
head softball coach] Jay [Biesterfeld]
reached out to me that November. We talked
it over and I was on board next spring.”
For Biesterfeld, who just completed his
14th season at Providence after being head
coach at Rich South between 1998-2002,
bringing Holba on as an assistant/first base
coach was an easy decision.
“We were looking for a coach and I had
got to know Jim over the years,” Biesterfeld
said. “I knew philosophically we’d be on
the same page, so I was certainly onboard.
I wanted his input, wanted another sounding
board.”
Holba turned 42 the day after the state
tournament ended and has plenty of time to
continue his coaching career. Would he like
to be a head coach again?
“If the opportunity arises, maybe,” Holba
said. “I’ve been very fortunate to be a
head coach and I like teaching at Andrew.
But my plan right now is to stay on at
Providence.”

Jeff Vorva
j.vorva@22ndcm.com
Last week in this
hallowed space, I
bragged about how
special and exciting the finish
to the spring season was
for Sandburg, Andrew and
Tinley Park High School.
Drama. Disappointment.
Postseason championships.
Individual state titles.
We have seen it all.
But there were a couple of
other schools in the Chicago
area that could even top the
cool stuff fans in this area
got to experience: New
Trier and Plainfield North.
Winning state titles is
nothing new for New Trier
as that school has racked up
more than 120 of those bad
boys over the decades. But
what happened on June 2
was pretty remarkable for
the Winnetka school, and it
didn’t even win a state title
that day.
The Trevians woke that
morning with a chance to
win four state championships.
Four in one day!
It didn’t happen, though.
In girls soccer, the
nationally-ranked New Trier
Plainfield North’s girls softball team was a part of a magical three-week stretch for the school’s athletic program. JEFF
VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
squad (which beat Andrew
5-0 in the semifinals the
day before) and Barrington
battled in a classic Class
3A game at North Central
College in Naperville before
Barrington pulled off a 1-0
victory in a shootout after
100 minutes of gritty scoreless
action.
In the first Illinois High
School Association boys and
girls lacrosse state finals,
New Trier was beaten by
host Hinsdale Central, 13-3,
in the girls game and the
Trevians were stopped by
Loyola in the boys game,
7-2. Two more second-place
finishes.
Finally, in boys volleyball,
the Trevians lost a semifinal
battle to eventual state
champion Lincoln-Way East
14-25, 25-22, 25-17. They
dropped the third-place game
to finish fourth with a 25-15,
25-22 setback to three-time
defending champion Glenbard
West.
True, the four Tevians
teams went 0-5, but to be
within sniffing distance
of state titles and bringing
home four more top-4 trophies
is jaw-dropping.
That brings us to Plainfield
North.
I’ll wait for the Sandburg
fans to get done cursing
and booing and hissing
(do people hiss anymore?)
before I continue.
All done?
OK, the Tigers started a
nice run at the IHSA State
Boys Track meet as they
finished third in Class 3A.
But the amazing thing was
that sophomore Marcellus
Moore won the 100-meter
dash (10.31 seconds) and
200 (21.30) and was a key
member of the state championship
400 and 800 relay
teams.
The Tigers’ softball team
(OK, lets wait a few more
minutes for the Sandburg
fans to stop booing and hissing)
knocked off the Eagles
in the Class 4A Hinsdale
South Supersectional, 5-4
when Ryan Schaughnessy
hit a two-out, two-strike,
three-run homer to break the
Eagles’ hearts,
North ended up finishing
second in the state.
Meanwhile, North’s baseball
team also made it to the
state semifinals and on June
8, the Tigers ran into...yep,..
Sandburg.
I’ll plug my ears for a few
minutes while the Sandburg
fans vent again.
OK, the Tigers knocked
off the Eagles, 7-3, in the
semis in Joliet and the next
night beat Huntley, 4-3, for
the first team state championship
in school history.
From a local standpoint,
it’s a shame that Andrew and
Sandburg played victims in
the storylines of New Trier
and Plainfield North.
But you have to admit,
these were a couple of
special weeks for those two
schools.
Listen Up
“When I first went there I started crying and I
didn’t want to go on to the mat, but everyone
