Waste tyre management will benefit SMMEs
Oyewo Adetola Elizabeth
The Department of
Environmental Affairs held its
first public hearing on waste
Tyre Management on 18 May 2018
at the Olive Convention Centre. This
gathering was held in response to the
environmental Affairs Minister, Dr
Edna Molewa’s notice of consideration
plans of four industry waste tyre
management plans. The main intent
was to also get public comment on
the proposal submitted by the four
companies, namely the Tyre Waste
Abatement & Minimisation Initiative
of South Africa (TWAMISA),
Evergreen Energy, JPC Energy Systems
and South African Tyre Reuse
Company(SATRUCO).
The discussions were facilitated
by Deputy Director-General for
the Department of Environmental
Affairs (DEA), Nosipho Ngcaba
who highlighted that waste tyres
have been identified as a priority
waste stream based on the threat
that their indiscriminate disposal
pose to the environment. The broad
policy direction is to reduce the
environmental externalities associated
with waste tyres by diverting
waste tyres away from landfill and
maximizing the value extracted
from waste tyres as a resource by
encouraging re-use, recycling and
waste to energy.
According to the DEA DDG,
Chemical & Waste Management,
Mark Gordon, “circular economy
is important for resource efficiency
because of the huge potential for
South Africa to create circular
economies that generate wealth from
waste. The circular economy approach
could successfully be used to recover
and recycle plastic waste. This would
generate major socio-economic
benefits.”
The meeting echoed that Waste Tyre
Management will benefit SMMEs,
make entrepreneurs, create jobs,
ensure dignified jobs, vibrant waste
economy and sustainability of jobs
for SMMEs. The four aforementioned
companies presented their proposals
with various plans on upstream and
downstream value chain, including the
market demand and supply analysis.
The impact of the plans on training
and development towards the creation
of sustainable jobs was also identified.
The class of 1976 has over the years
been used as an example to inspire
the current crop of young people
in South Africa. A huge number of
young people in our country draw
inspiration from the sacrifices made
by people such as Hector Peterson,
Tsietsi Mashinini and Makhubo
Mbuyisa to mention a few. During
that time, young people fought against
the Bantu Education Act introduced
by the Apartheid government in
1953. These young people wanted the
current generation to be able to learn
using their own languages. This call
has over the years been well received
by a number of young people who
have went on to educate and empower
themselves. Here are a few names of
young people who are in business
and doing well for themselves, their
communities as well as the society at
“Angifuni noma yimuphi nje
umuntu, kodwa ngifuna labo bantu
abahlakaniphile futhi abanothando
lwebhizinisi. Ngikhulma ngomuntu
okade waqala ukuba nesifiso
sokungena ebhizinisini kodwa engazi
ukuthi uzoqala ngaphi ukuze isifiso
sakhe siphumelele,” usho kanje.
UNkz Nokulunga Mtshali ongomunye
