The Kwa-Zulu Natal Convention Bureau and the
Durban ICC under the auspice of the KwaZulu-
Natal Ministry for Economic Development,
Tourism & Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) hosted
a Stakeholder Engagement session tagged the
‘importance of Business Tourism in the South
African Economy’ on 4th October 2018 at the
Durban ICC.
The event gathered government officials,
hospitality owners, business leaders and tourism
experts to discuss how business tourism was
key to sustain the economy. The highlight of
the discussion unpacked how South Africa
was trying to get five million more people to
visit the country in the next five years. With
research presentation from the South African
National Convention Bureau (SANCB) delegate
tracking study 2014-2016, it indicated that in
2014, the international meetings, conference
and exhibition industry business contributed to
267 660 direct and indirect annual jobs in South
Africa and 280 555 in 2015.The session also
highlighted how to get more accommodation
booked, how service providers and SMMES
could benefit from event bidding.
MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and
Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), Sihle Zikalala
Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA),
Sihle Zikalala commenting on the SANCB report
stated that ‘the commercial value of visitors
traveling for business or leisure must be at
the heart of our economic development and
employment creation trajectory.
All stakeholders must work together to
achieve sustainable inclusive growth to
increase employment. The severe levels of
unemployment, poverty, and inequality require
urgent attention’.
He adds that the National Development Plan
states that we need to raise employment by 11
million to 24 million by 2030. This is in recognition
that the President expects social partners and all
sectors to commit to specific targets and plans
to end the nightmare of unemployment which is
robbing many South African young people of
their future.
Persons from previously disadvantage
should benefit from the sector not just as
cleaners but owners in the value chain’.
Zikalala suggest the need on offering
diverse tourism products and South Africa
should be marketed as a whole at equal
level. It was also pointed out that the Home
Affairs new regulation would also boost
growth of the tourism sector.
The engagement was attended by CEO
Ushaka Marine world, Dr. Stella Khumalo;
eThekwini Councillor Nkosenhle Madlala;
CEO Durban ICC Lindiwe Rakharebe;
Acting CEO Tourism KwaZulu-Natal,
Phindile Makwakwa; Board Members
Tourism KwaZulu-Natal Authority, Mr.
Sthembiso Lennox Madlala ; CEO Durban
Chamber of Commerce, Palesa Phili and
KZN Convention Bureau Acting Chief
Officer, Sonto Matisse amongst others.
As well as the impact of business tourism,
economic impact of Durban ICC; crime
perception on tourism and uncleanliness in
certain part of Durban on tourism.
Stakeholders were urged to work together
collaboratively in the event bidding process
because the bidding process is complex in order
to go against other destination in the bidding
process. There is also the need to showcase
SMMEs and SMMEs should be involved in the
bidding process as it cost less hosting event in
South Africa.
Department of Labor’s Public Hearings on Proposed
Employment Equity Amendments & Regulations Moves To KZN
By : Oyewo-Umoh Adetola Elizabeth
The Department of Labor’s Employment Equity
(EE) Directorate’s national public hearings on
the tagged ‘Real transformation makes business
sense’ was unpacked in KwaZulu-Natal. With
public hearing held on 9th October 2018 at the
Golden Horse Casino Hotel, Pietermaritzburg
and on 10th October 2018 at the Olive Convention
Centre, Durban.
The public hearing discussion focused on the
EE amendments such as alignment between
defi nitions, policy provisions on collection of data
for the National Minimum Wage Commission.
The introduction of provisions and regulatory
requirements for the promulgation of Section 53
to ensure employers benefi ting fi nancially from
State contracts comply with the EE Act.
Attendees at the Durban roadshow.
The objectives of the public hearing was to
unpack the Department of Labour proposed
amendments which aimed to eradicate unfair
discrimination in the workplace.
This is in recognition that 20 years since the
inception of the Employment Equity Act enacted
in 1998, the published Employment Equity
Amendment Bill and the Draft Employment
Equity Regulations in the Government Gazette,
there was still slow pace of transformation in the
workplace.
The public hearings aimed to gather comments
to the proposed amendments, with focus on
employment equity (EE) reporting advocacy
and the amendments to EE legislation and
regulations so as to fast-track the transformation
of workplaces.
Secondly, to make reporting requirements
easier for designated employers who are small
employers. In addition to introduction of provisions
in the EE Amendment Bill and regulations for the
consultation and setting of numerically based
sector targets across various occupational levels
to ensure an equitably represented workforce.
Department of Labour Senior Practitioner-
Registry, Robert Dzhombere explained that
designated employers are expected to report EE.
Designated employers are organizations with 50
employees. The rationale for such ‘discussion
on EE online reporting is because employers
and business are still not compliant and some
organization do not promote their staff which
negates the EE Act’, said Department of Labour
Senior Practitioner-Registry, Robert Dzhombere.
The complaint level in KwaZulu-Natal is also less
than 4%.
Deputy Director, Department of Labour Deputy
Director: Employment and Equity, Masilo Lefi ka
emphasized that ‘SMEs are not to report because
they are not in the designated employer group
because they are have less than 50 employees
and still babies in terms of business , we need
them to flourish and grow’.
The proposal is also in recognition of identifi ed
sectors from 11 to 18 sector and discussions
with the Department social partner, National
Economic Development and Labour Council –
Nedlac
The EE 2018 online reporting is open and the
online EE reporting closes on 15 January 2019.
KwaZulu-Natal Trade and Investment Week (TIKZN) 2018
By: Anele S. Gumede
From the 1st to the 5th of October 2018 the Durban
ICC hosted the KwaZulu-Natal Trade Investment Export
week. The TIKZN is an annual programme of trade and
Investments in KwaZulu-Natal. The Expo was held to
highlight the importance of exporting in the KwaZulu-
Natal economy and to celebrate all the succeeding
export businesses in South Africa.
The Expo week was filled with information and
networking session for emerging exporters, existing
exporters and seasoned exporters. The main aim for the
exporter week was to develop, recognise, promote and
assist with growing KwaZulu-Natal’s export businesses
and industries. The Expo is to allow many businesses
to grown and understand the different and safe ways of
trading. Throughout the week a variety of seminars were
held where comprehensive programmes of activities
and where professionals had shared their thought and
ideas on development and information on the growth
of sectors and market opportunities to KwaZulu-Natal’s
new exporters and international businesses.
“Networking is very important for businesses so please
embrace this opportunity and get to know each other as
businesses.”
The seminar had a number of important people to talk to
these businesses about running exporting businesses
and how to trade with other countries. Dr Martin
Cameron Director and Owner of Trade and Research
Advisory (Pty) Ltd, MARCAM Software and Consulting
Company was speaker and facilitator on the last day of
the Expo week.
“South Africa needs to move forward and Trade policy
and Industrial policy should work together” Says Dr
Cameron
The TIKZN is looking to way to helping and developing
South African firms and teach South Africans about how
to trade with other African Countries.
The only way to grow Africa is by getting all the
government parties such as SARS to help the country go
forward.
In South Africa we have a great relationship with other
countries and we need to use that to our advantage and
trade.
“We need to challenge not only people like the TKZN but
also companies like the ADA and many other well-known
Companies”
In closing Dr Martin Cameron ended by advising SMME’s
on the world of Trade and how entering into Trade can
affect their businesses.
“SMME’s should not enter into Trade because they are
only setting themselves up for failure, unless they have a
good product.”
ZERO GRAVITY CLOUD
Zamani Nzimande is just another ordinary lad from Seaview, South of Durban. He is also an Amazon Solutions Architect at Zero Gravity Cloud.
Amazon is the largest cloud vendor in the World & Zamani is part of a very exclusive group: Less than 1% of ICT Professionals Worldwide,
certifi ed to partner with Amazon Cloud: Amazon Web Services or AWS.
This is the fi rst in a series of articles, titled: “Ask Zamani”? Where Zamani will share his knowledge and experience gained from
Amazon, as well as current trends he is seeing in their more mature, First-World Markets. You may also mail him your ICT
questions: zamani@zerogravity.cloud.
The fi rst subject for discussion is quite rightly: Security! Security should be any Organization’s absolute priority. If we cannot
protect our business and our customers, we have no business. Security threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated,
and good security hygiene is critical.
The key questions to evaluate your Business’ ICT Infrastructure on, is:
1. How secure is my Business against malicious cyber attacks?
2. How quickly can my Business recover from a core IT failure?
3. Can my Business continue to operate during a core IT outage?
4. Is my Business compliant with the Protection of Personal Information
(PoPI) Act?
To this end: Encryption of essential business data is the minimum any business should ensure, and
security by design is one of the biggest advantages of cloud. Zamani advocates Cloud as the quickest
method to easily and cost-effectively protect your Business from Cyber attacks.
There is a fallacy that Public Cloud is a security risk. This can’t be any further from the Truth! If you are
serious about Security, you will move to Public Cloud. At Amazon, Security is their Priority Zero. There
is nothing more important to Amazon than Security. The annual Security budget at Amazon is upwards
of US$1Billion, budgets that none of us can afford. As such, their levels of security are at military
defense grade. This is THE positive externality of hosting your ICT infrastructure in Public Cloud.
Ask Zamani how you can leverage of Amazon Web Services to secure your Business today
to ensure continuity through migration to Cloud: zamani@zerogravity.cloud.
From the 18 to the 24 of September the
Durban ICC hosted the 20th Durban
Business fair. For these past 2 decades
eThekwini Municipality has made it their
priority to support business around
South Africa.
They made it their job to create a change
among these businesses allowing them to
create names for themselves and allowing
them to network with other businesses. On
the 19 to the 22 the Durban ICC hosted the
Durban Fashion Fair.
The Business Indaba Panel Discussion of local and international business
delegates which was broadcasted live on CNBC and hosted by Fifi Peters
Celebrating seven years, the annual
Durban Fashion Fair is one of the biggest
fashion events on the South Africa fashion
calendar. The event had a number of
fashion media, fashion buyers and “lovers
of all things fashion”. The eThekwini’s main
goal was to providing local designers with
an opportunity to sell their creations.
The DFF had invite manufacturers of
clothing, shoes, bags, jewellery, and other
fashion accessories to book a stand at this
prestigious event and allow them to exhibit
as well as network with industry experts
and fashion buyers.
The municipality’s main aim was to help
small, medium and micro enterprises
(SMME’s) by allowing them to get advice
from successful businessmen and
women on how to sustain and grow their
businesses.
Then on the 21 to the 24 the
municipality was able to invited SMME’s
to register and exhibit their work for the
exhibition platform.
This had allowed them to include a
number of empowerment practises and
seminars to be headlined by influential
businesspeople.
While the Durban Business Fair
programme is the tool to expose and
equip emerging businesses, it also
serves as a banner that showcases all
the opportunities and services available
in the Municipality to businesses so that
they will know exactly how to access
those.
This year’s key focus was on youth
development and township economies
revitalisation.
Sessions in KwaZulu-Natal
By :: Oyewo-Umoh Adetola Adetola Elizabeth Elizabeth
The Department of Labour’s Inspection
and Enforcement Services (IES) on September
26 2018 conducted a blitz and
advocacy sessions in Durban and surrounding
areas. The blitz and advocacy
sessions were in line with the Department
of Labour National Inspectors three-day
Conference held at the Olive Convention
Centre Durban from 24-26 September.
The conference which also discussed
issues affecting vulnerable workers in
the workplaces, employment standards,
Court referrals and challenges faced by
the inspectorate. In addition to the Basic
conditions of employment Act (BCEA),
Employment Agencies Standard (EAS)
and Employment Equity Act (EEA) norms/
standards for 2019/20 financial year.
The blitz and advocacy sessions focused
on the Hospitality Sectors, Private
Security, and Wholesale & Retail sectors.
The blitz inspection in KwaZulu-Natal
focused on Brickfield, Sparks & Alpine
Roads, and West Street, Malls (Galleria,
Connubial, and Arbour Crossing).
The advocacy also targeted commuters
in taxi ranks, railway stations. With focus
in areas such as: Ntuzuma, KwaMashu,
Pinetown, Isipingo, Springfield, Pinetown,
Berea and the Durban central business
district.
Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF)
Commissioner Teboho Maruping pointed out
during the conference that ‘we want our clients
to access our services ‘anytime, anyplace, and
anywhere’. We want to take away people from
Labour Centre queues. We want to move to
these technological platforms by December. ‘If
the records are correct and captured accurately
and updated, there was no reason why claims
payment should be delayed’, he said.
Maruping also announced that the UIF would
be unveiling a co-operative model to encourage
an active citizenry in which the workers would
blow the whistle on non-complying employers
when it comes to UIF.
Deputy Director General; Inspection and
Enforcement Services (IES), Aggy Moiloa in
her speech reiterated ‘that workplace labour
laws need to respond to the fourth industrial
revolution as workplaces are dynamic which
calls for workplace and business to respond to
the trend’.
She emphasized also that it is important that
employers comply with South Africa’s labour
legislation such as the Basic Conditions of
Employment Act (BCEA), the implementation of
the employment equity (EE) and unemployment
insurance act (UIA). SMME gathered that with
the blitz inspection to hospitality business in
the Durban North Beach, employers paid their
employees the minimum wage between R18
per hour 18-19 per minimum.
“Tourism is the future”-
tourists are spending less
According to Statistics S.A from 2016 to 2917 the
Domestic Tourism Industry has over went a major shift.
There has been a huge amount of increase in Domestic
tourism as the number of day trips as compared to
night trips. Travellers are travelling more but they are
significantly spending less on their trips. According to a
survey conducted by the Domestic Tourism Survey
(DTS) in 2017, the number of day trips increased from
39.4 million in 2016 to 48 million in 2017.
Overnight trips are still growing significantly as well
but they have had a smaller increase from 2016 to
2017. With of 43 million to 44.4 million . statistics
S.A. says that this decrease has been caused by
spending more money on food, beverages, recreation,
accommodation, culture and also shopping.
Travellers usually go to trips commonly for taking
overnight trips to visit family members and friends
and not making use of paid accommodation which
decreases the amount of money spent on hotels, guest
houses, B&B’S.
However the money spent on overnight trips has
decreased from both 2016 to 2017. Mostly day trips
are for shopping but it’s not always the biggest
shopping malls in South Africa that gain in terms of
retail. Shopping is one of the reasons why people travel
from provinces to provinces. From Northern Cape,
Limpompo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal.
Most tourists travel to the Western Cape for leisure
purposes, visiting family or friends and also to see
popular destinations. In 2016 and 2017 Gauteng and
Western Cape were the most popular destination
for day travellers. Those for overnight trips preferred
Limpompo.
Mostly tourists spend up to one week on their
destination for overnight trips. Staying with friends and
relatives was the most popular for KwaZulu-Natal and
Western Cape. Also taxis were the most popular mode
of transport with travellers taking a maximum of ten trips
daily.
In South Africa tourism has the potential to make a
function be well known hence creating a profit for
the country economically but tourists spending less
leads to less money being contributed to the economy
and also to the country itself. Tourism is one of the
industries that contribute that contribute to economic
growth and tourism is the future.
in honour of the great South Africa Icon Nelson.
Mandela in Focus is a coffee table pictorial work
featuring the work of the former president’s private
photographer, Kevin Joseph with the text written by
journalist and commentator Farook Khan.
The book contains unseen photographs that have not
been viewed on the public sphere. The book highlights
Mandela as a “man of faith” as there is a huge collection
of photographs of him showing private family gatherings
with Mrs Gracia Mandela and Mrs Winnie Mandela.
The images contained in the book are a collector’s item
and are in huge demand by tertiary institutions and by
high profi le members of the state because of how depict
the private life of the former president and the unseen
moments that they have. Kevin Joseph had access and
permission to capture private moments of Mandela.
Many untold stories are in the book,
they are heart-felt photographs showing moments of
happiness and grief including images of the great icon’s
funeral.Farook Khan has followed the life of Mandela
dating back to the 60’s from his imprisonment up to his
release to liberation in the 90’s. The book is living proof
of the continuation of the late president’s legacy. Kevin
Joseph’s business agent and Activist was also present at
the book launch.
Nelson Mandela’s grandson Zondwa Mandela and his
wife were present at the launch. He said “I’m gonna tell
the truth and nothing but the truth. It’s very clear that
many African storytellers and photographers are very
proud of their African stories and sharing their African
perspective to the world. Africa’s youth and children
need to know that the story of Winnie Mandela and
Nelson Mandela lives in the beauty, intelligence and
determination we fi nd in all our young man and women
of today. The story of Winnie and Nelson Mandela has
been conventionalised. It’s up to us to make sure that the
story of Winnie and Mandela becomes a very indigenous
African story”.
they can call their own.
“The seed that AME Africa has planted in you is, training you
in entrepreneurship a majority of small businesses are started
by people who have no background in business at all, and you
need as a business person to know the eight enterprise functions
LAND OF OPPORTUNITIES
#DIETChangeNotClimateChange Writing Competition 2018
You can join the #DietChangeNotClimateChange writing completion
and win a spot that is partially founded to the Convention on Biological
Diversity negotiations in Egypt.
Climate tracker is looking for young writers from around the world
who want to make a huge impact in their countries, writing about the
effects of climate change and also meat consumption. There are many
factors that lead to human-caused climate change such as dairy,
egg production , soil erosion , water pollution and also the decrease
in biodiversity. According to a study conducted by FAO farm animals
contribute 14.5% of total greenhouse gas emissions. Overall the top 20
meat and dairy corporations produce more greenhouse gas emissions.
Evidence states that high plant based foods and lower animal products
are less damaging to the climate. For instance producing 1 kg of beef
releases about 16 kg of carbon dioxide into the environment, while
producing 1 kg of tofu released only about 1 kg of carbon dioxide.
Replacing beef with beans would free up to 42% of farmland that would
achieve 75% of 2020’s climate goal and provide more sufficient dietary
protein.
The 2 best winners of the writing competition will get a chance to
attend the Convention on Biological Diversity Negotiations in Egypt in
November 2018. Through the negotiations they will receive training on
environmental biodiversity and journalism by Climate Tracker. They will
also get to meet amazing people from everywhere in the world.
The 2 week accommodation in Egypt will be covered by Climate
Tracker. If you want to make a difference between the 17th of September
and the 12th of October you have to write an article about “effects of
meat consumption on climate change and what needs to change in your
country”. Afterwards you have to publish the article in a media of your
own country. It can be a magazine, newspaper or an online news site.
Once the article is published you have to submit the link through the
app.
To get more help regarding climate issues, Climate Tracker will prepare
information toolkits, webinars with experts and give help and intense
feedback on how to pitch to editors, to get an article published or how to
learn about climate change in your region.
Climate Tracker will then revise the articles submitted through the app,
give feedback tips and select the best writers. The 2 best writers will get
a partially funded fellowship to Egypt to the Convention on Biological
Diversity meeting.
The 48 Hour Film Project
By : Zanele P. Ndimande
The rush and the non-ending adrenalin
of the 48 hour film project has hit yet
again and will be coming to the city
of Durban on the weekend of 23-25
November 2018. With eight years in
running there has never been less vigour
and sparkles when it comes to making a
short film in just 48 hours and having it
viewed by many on the big screen.
The 48 hour film project is an
international film competition where
people can enter in teams and make
a movie in 48 hours. The project
has circulated around South African
provinces from Gauteng to Cape Town
and now Durban gives filmmakers the
chance to show what they have and
impress their family, friends, colleagues
and other filmmakers.
Anyone can enter the competition and
there is no age limit. Professionals,
amateurs and students are encouraged
to enter bringing only their enthusiasm,
passion and skills as their driving
force. Entrants use the equipment
they have, and they don’t need any
high-tech equipment. The organisers
encourage entrants who don’t have
access to professional equipment to use
mobile devices to shoot and edit their
films. The 48 hour is an opportunity for
filmmakers and film enthusiasts of all
levels to practice and showcase their
craft. New entrants are invited to free
workshops where they get to learn about
storytelling, scriptwriting and producing
for the 48 Hour Film Project.
Industry leading professionals facilitate these
workshops which takes place the 2 weekends
before the filming event weekend, which is 23
to 25 November 2018.
There is a lot of raw and authentic talent in
South Africa that is to be discovered and
moulded. But the reality is that many individuals
would like to enter the competition, but money
is tight , so the organisers try to raise funds to
sponsor some of those who wish to enter but
don’t have the money to.
An early bird fee of R1500 is required for all
entering teams, the regular fee is R1600 and
late-comer which applies 2 weeks before the
event, is R1800 per team. Local organisers,
Combined Skills Group, has partnered along
with many sponsors to discover talent while
making the project a success from the likes of
Ster-Kinekor, Canon SA, Media Film Service,
Mindset TV, SACIA, FilmContact and others.
“South Africa has amazing talent and we are
pleasantly surprised with the entries year on
year. We’ve also seen an increase in female
entrants, and they do tend to steal the show
when it comes to producing and writing. African
talent needs good mentors and opportunities
like the 48 Hour Film Project to help filmmakers
get exposure. In Johannesburg we have a
young filmmaker, Timothy Drew, who entered
his first 48 Hour at the age of 11 years. He’s
now a film student in college and continues to
enter every year, winning awards frequently.
This year, 2018, he won Best Student entry in
Johannesburg, when it was announced at the
Awards ceremony on 21 October.
“Timothy loves the rush of the 48”, says Natalie
Delport, Managing Director of Combined Skills
Group, Durban Co-City Producer of the 48 Hour
Film Project.
She works alongside many students, amateurs
and professionals on the 48 Hour Film Project
and says that she is inspired by the real
talent that’s alive and living in South African
townships, the rush of talent tells it all, the
feel and the impersonation of emotion tells a
thousand stories.
With the 48 Hour She works along with
Durban Co-City Producer and Imbewu the
Seed, scriptwriter, Ben Johnson and assistant
producer Nerusha Maharaj, as they are both
set to take the reigns for the event in Durban as
Natalie is mostly based in Gauteng and travels
to Durban when required to mentor these two.
Prior to the event weekend, the filmmakers
have no information about the genres for
the films. They find this out when they pick 2
genres at the kick-off on Friday night. Followed
by the drawing, filmmakers are given a
character name, profession, a line, and a prop.
They then set off to make their film in only 48
hours – and deliver their film on the Sunday,
exactly 48-hours later. Only films delivered
within the 48-hour time are eligible for the
official Awards, but all film entries delivered by
Sunday, midnight, will be screened on the big
screen at the Ster-Kinekor Musgrave centre.
The 48HFP Awards will be held on 9 December
2019, venue and logistics will be posted on
the official website closer to the time – and all
teams are invited to the Awards, whether they
made it or now.
The winning film per city will be sent to
Filmapalooza in the USA to compete
with films from around the world.
The winning film crowned the best
international film will open the Cannes
Film Festival 2019, and the 48 Hour
global organiser and judges select
10 films from around the world to be
screened at the Cannes Short Film
corner.
Co-City Producer of the Durban 48 Hour
Film Project, Ben Johnson Jr, believes
in real passion and authentic talent for
filmmaking, as South Africa has a lot
of undiscovered talent, “Everyone has
a different story, my background is
Human Resources. I left it and people
thought I was crazy, I found my passion
very late. I‘m actually a creative but I
followed what I thought was a regular
job just like everybody else.
When you come into the film industry
you’re asked a question about your
education in the field. What matters for
me is showing that you have a skill of
being able to do something. If you come
to for help with a project, I will not ask
which University you went to. I believe
that ‘like’ passions attract each other,
eventually you end up in the same
circle of people that you share the same
beliefs with”.
