Nelson
Mandela,
Isithwalandwe!
Nelson Mandela, father of the nation
SMME Staff Reporter
Nelson Rolihlahla
Mandela, born on
18 July 1918 was a
South African anti-apartheid
revolutionary, political leader,
and philanthropist, who served
as President of South Africa
from 1994 to 1999. He was
our first black head of state
and the first elected in a fully
representative democratic
election.
Mandela was
undoubtedly the
best political
leader in our
country
and
possibly the whole world. He served
27-years at Robben Island prison
for standing up against the injustice
of the apartheid government. Apart
from being a political leader and the
servant of the people. Mandela was
philanthropist who believed in the
power of words for changing the world
we live in. dubbed as ‘The father of the
nation’, Madiba died on 05 December
2013.
Here are some of Mandela’s memorable
quotes to get you going and for
reviving the Mandela in you.
Quote about life:
“What counts in life is not the mere
fact that we have lived. It is what
difference we have made to the lives
of others that will determine the
significance of the life we lead.” – 90th
birthday celebration of Walter Sisulu,
Walter Sisulu Hall, Johannesburg, 18
May 2002.
Quote about ideas:
“You sharpen your ideas by reducing
yourself to the level of the people you
are with and a sense of humour and a
complete relaxation, even when you’re
discussing serious things, does help
to mobilise friends around you. And
I love that.” – From an interview with
Tim Couzens, Verne Harris and Mac
Maharaj for Mandela: The Authorised
Portrait, 2006, 13 August 2005.
Quote on education:
“Education is the most powerful
weapon which you can use to change
the world.” – University of the
Witwatersrand South Africa, 2003.
Quote on braveness:
“The brave man is not he who does not
feel afraid, but he who conquers that
fear.” – Long Walk to Freedom.
Quote on leadership:
“Lead from the back and let other
believe they are in front”

Entrepreneurs alongside the Women
In Business Forum (WIB) Information
Session tagged: “Sharpening the sword
for young entrepreneurs” on the 26th
June 2018. About 30 entrepreneurs
from different industries and areas
around Kwazulu Natal, females and
males attended the half-day long
session.
“The youth can walk fast, but the
elders know the road”, remarked
the event coordinator, Ms Pumzile
Mbambo to sum the kind of support
being offered. Youths are indeed
excited and have lots of ideas, but
they need to be given the necessary
information and guidance to help
their ideas and innovation find the
light of day. They also need necessary
support to transform their business
ideas into reality, and help their
small businesses to the next level.
Entrepreneurs often need funding,
but there are other important factors
that must be considered to ensure the
growth, development and success of a
small business.
Dynamic speakers from Smart
Xchange, Biz Farm, SEDA, NYDA
and the South Coast Chamber of
Commerce gave valuable inputs
to supporting small business
development. Dr. Dikshita Padalkar
from Biz Farm and Mr Vijay Naidoo
encouraged the entrepreneurs to pay
attention to the trends in the world as
characterized by the fourth industrial
revolution. They both advised that the
current trend in business management
is one which embraces the female
characteristics of nurturance.
“The Cyber Physical System is
not replacing humans, contrary to
popular belief ” noted Dr Padalkar,
who encouraged entrepreneurs not
and Standard Bank.
The business owners presented
their businesses and products, they
emphasized on the growth plans of
their businesses and indicated whether
or not they needed funding. The
funders and financiers were excited to
fund most of the businesses, except for
those who were not really interested
in funding but just wanted advice and
guidelines.
Women in Business Session
to be threatened, but to make it
work for them. Entrepreneurs need
to be innovative and flexible. In
emphasizing the value of business
innovation, Ms Fathima Sarigat
from Smart Xchange introduced
participants to the TIA innovation
Fund Application Process that is
available for entrepreneurs who have
innovative business ideas that are IT
based. She mentioned that there are
many other such funds.
Statistics that female-led businesses
attract less financial investment but
produce high output was cited as an
indication that female-related soft
skills and empathy are now highly
sort-after. Vijay Naidoo added that
Ethics must be inculcated to business
from the inception.
Ms Reshman Maharaj, advised that
marketing is the last thing to cut
cost on. She echoed the need to take
advantage of social media marketing
and other low cost platforms for
business exposure. She noted that
brands take a long time to build and
encouraged entrepreneurs not to give
up on their goals because “hard work
is the only route too success”.
Ms Sne Mbele informed business
owners of the services that they can
receive from SEDA. She highlighted
trainings, financial management and
business coupons that SEDA offers.
SEDA supports small businesses. Ms
Fanele Mdlalose noted that although
the NYDA provide some similar
support as SEDA, its focus is for
young people between the ages of
18-35. She disclosed that the NYDA
provides training in critical areas
of business and issues certificate of
competence. Attendees were advised
to check visit these organisations for
further support and assistance after
they have done their part of being sure
where they are going.

Over the past few years, the
term ‘Oceans economy’ has
gained popularity with a number
of economic hubs aligning
themselves to benefit from it.
Most recently, the MEC for
Economic Development, Tourism
and Environmental Affairs in
KwaZulu-Natal, Sihle Zikalala
said oceans economy has been
identified as one of the sectors
that have the potential to create
jobs and business opportunities
for young people. More often
than not, SMMEs catch up late
with the latest drivers of the
economy thus being left out.
One primary example for this
was when cell phones began
to takeover, stall owners who
had landlines were booted out
of business. It is important for
SMMEs to keep track of what is
happening around them so that
when the industry changes gears,
it changes with them on board.
KwaZulu-Natal has two major
harbours which are very
instrumental in the economy
of country. The Richards Bay
Municipality Mayor, Zandile
speech in May that parts of this
unlock R35 billion in annual
The Oceans Economy has been
chosen as one of the key sectors
for Operation Phakisa because
of the massive opportunity to
create value that resides onshore
and offshore. Operation Phakisa
Exploring
target areas within the Oceans
Economy strategy that SMMEs
can look into in order to jump
into the wagon of growth within
the oceans economy, namely;
aquaculture, offshore oil and
gas, marine protection and
governance, marine transport
and manufacturing as well
as Small Harbours and State
Coastal Property. These are
the untapped opportunities
within this sector that SMMEs
can look into pursuing, those
who are already in one of these
sectors can seek advice from the
Launch of
Thuma Mina
campaign
Marvellous Zondi
On 07 July 2018, President
Cyril Ramaphosa visited
KwaDukuza (formerly known
as Stanger) to launch the Thuma Mina
campaign. Ramaphosa kicked off the
day’s proceedings by embarking on a
clean-up campaign, cleaning the streets
of this historic town. He also handed
out title deeds to some of the residents.
Later on the day, Ramaphosa addressed
the crowd where he cited that it is
about time that South Africans are at
the forefront of running businesses.
“People are tired of having the
businesses in our country being
run by a minority. Our own people
must run their business and we
will empower them to do that,” said
Ramaphosa before adding that the
government is working ‘feverishly’ to
ensure black citizens became ‘serious
business people’. “We want them to
run businesses and employ others. We
want radical economic empowerment
and transformation to be the order of
the day,”
Ramaphosa has been leading the
call for the inclusion of young and
black people in businesses since his
inaugural State of the Nation Address
earlier this year where he stated that
business confidence among South
African companies has improved and
foreign investors are looking anew at
opportunities in our country.
“Some financial institutions have
identified South Africa as one of the
hot emerging markets for 2018. Our
task, as South Africans, is to seize this
moment of hope and renewal, and to
work together to ensure that it makes
a meaningful difference in the lives
of our people. This year, we will be
initiating measures to set the country
on a new path of growth, employment
and transformation. We will do this
by getting social partners in our
country to collaborate in building a
social compact on which we will create
drivers of economic recovery” said the
President before adding that, “We have
to build further on the collaboration
with business and labour to restore
confidence and prevent an investment
downgrade. Tough decisions have to be
made to close our fiscal gap, stabilise
our debt and restore our state-owned
enterprises to health. At the centre
of our national agenda in 2018 is the
creation of jobs, especially for the
youth.”
in Johannesburg on 25-27 July 2018.
These countries are; Brazil, Russia,
China and South Africa.
Speaking to moneyweb ahead of this
gathering, Zulu cited that the reason
why her office choose to be part of
this year’s event was to represent the
interest of small business owners at
international level.
“We pushed for our participation
because we believe that even at BRICS
there should be opportunities for
by being part of this summit they will
be able to push for issues relating to
are among the biggest in uplifting small
business owners, the minister lauded
these countries for ‘recognising the
Zulu also emphasised on the
importance of making South Africa
conducive for SMMEs.
“The challenge is that they (During
SMMEs, the importance of SMMEs is
undisputed now. Inequality is quite a
The minister also cited that one of
the reasons
why her office
is to source
Youth and women empowerment prioritized at Innovation Festival
Oyewo-Umoh Adetola Elizabeth
On 28-29 June 2018, the
INNOVATE Durban held its
annual Innovation Festival
at Bond shed Point Waterfront. This
festival was aimed at developing
and escalating innovative solutions
in a form of new technologies and
models in a bid to produce more
youth and women entrepreneurs.
The INNOVATE Durban programme
was launched in 2014 to highlight the
importance of innovation in economic
processes as well as channel creativity
into improving the City.
EThekwini Municipality, the founding
member of Innovate Durban, has
partnered to build a platform that
brings the business and academic
communities together to enable
innovation that solves business
challenges, drives economic growth
and create jobs
The Innovation Festival is an annual
event with creative collaboration
between entrepreneurs, artists,
artisans, designers, technologists,
engineers, scientists and inventors for
solutions
The focus of this two day festival
is innovation and information
technology. With features such as
workshop, exhibition, Yakhasakhe
youth programme, 5th Future
Mobility Round Table, Qhakaza Girl
empowerment seminar on robotics
using LEGO to build a robot system
, electric car spin and pitching den
competition as well as the Durban
University of Technology’s Energy
Drive Truck; electric car displays
and demos by BMW and display of
electronic refrigerated truck designed
and built in South Africa. Deputy
Vice-Chancellor for Research UKZN
Professor Deresh Ramjugernath
said that the “Innovation Festival
is a response for innovation for
entrepreneurs to thrive and address
unemployment. It is indigenous ecosystem
for innovation in response
to eThekwini’s call for solution
and meeting the UN sustainable
development goals”
Innovate Durban Chief Executive
Office, Aurelia Albert reiterated the
importance of the festival, labelling it
as one of eThekwini’s many efforts to
expose youths and more women to the
sector.
Education
Don’t let business travel strain your relationship
Business travel can be exciting and
profitable, or it can feel exhausting,
physically and emotionally. This is
especially true when work-life balance
seems difficult, and when business
travel strains your relationships.
Dawn Weir, head of kulula work,
says that many relationships become
strained when one partner is often on
the road, and that this isn’t necessarily
restricted to couples with, for example,
small children.
“It can be difficult when one partner
is away and the other is at home with,
say, a teething toddler, but similar
stresses can affect couples who don’t
have that extra pressure.
“The partner who’s travelling might,
for example, feel guilty about not being
able to help at home, while whoever’s
at home might assume the one who’s
travelling is being waited on hand and
foot.”
Weir, who’s travelled extensively for
business, suggests a few easy ways to
keep your relationship healthy when
one of you is away.
See the positives: perhaps you’d rather
be at home, but that hotel buffet
breakfast means you don’t have to cook
or wash up. And if you’re the one who’s
at home, perhaps that means a little
me-time to binge-watch the Magnum
PI boxed set your partner can’t stand,
or a chance to learning to play the
accordion.
Recognise that business travel isn’t
really a holiday: your conference
in Barcelona might give you an
opportunity to see the Sagrada Familia
Cathedral, but that comes with time
in immigration queues and shuttling
between accommodation, expo venues
and airports rather than being served
bubbly and beluga.
If you’re the one at home, acknowledge
your thwarted wanderlust and envy
is allowed, but remember that your
partner might also be sitting through
Death By PowerPoint in a grey
auditorium somewhere.
Make contact routine: find a time
that works for each you each day to
have some face-time, whether it’s on
Whatsapp or any of the new platforms,
like Appear. In, ooVoo, Viber, or even
the much-maligned, up-again-downagain
Skype.
Try one of the new apps specifically
for private relationships, like Couple,
which combines aspects if Whatsapp
with elements of Snapchat, deleting
your messages after a while. If you
have time, an app like Icebreak takes
the famous “The 36 questions that lead
to love” premise and poses questions
for couples instead of strangers. It also
offers the option of reading strangers’
replies, often with side-splitting results.
Similarly, Happy Couple asks five
simple questions a day to help you get
to know your partner better.
Get your game on: if you’re in your
hotel in Frankfurt, you’re in no
position to unpack the dishwasher
at home, but you could, for example,
play Words With Friends with your
kids while your partner gets on
with chores at home or just to relax
with a sundowner. This helps you
stay engaged with your family while
allowing your Significant Other some
breathing-room.
Share your journey: Flight tracking
apps can be a fun way for your loved
ones to keep tabs on your progress
using your flight-number. FlightAware,
GateGuru and FlightView are popular,
but there are plenty of others. Bear
in mind that some flights may have
several flight numbers codeshare
airlines are involved.
Finally, one certain way to have a
healthy relationship is to stay healthy
yourself: sleep, exercise and fresh air
will help. Rather than listless channelflicking,
stay rehydrated and get some
rest, and in the morning, lace up those
running-shoes and get your heart-rate
up.
Government grants for Agriculture
An agricultural government
grant is the awarding of
financial assistance to your
agribusiness. Grants generally don’t
need to be paid back by the recipient.
However, there will be specific criteria
for determining who will be eligible
for a grant and once awarded, strict
guidelines around what the fund can
be used for.
Here is a list of some government
grants for agriculture:
1. Land Redistribution for
Agricultural Development
(LRAD)
The LRAD programme was developed
to support previously disadvantaged
citizens to buy both land and
agricultural equipment specifically
for the purpose of an agribusiness.
The LRAD grant is a non-refundable
financial contribution from
government.
Capital requirements: This grant
only supplements your existing funds
to support you in growing your
agribusiness. You need to have some
kind of capital contribution to begin
with. Cash contributions can be a
minimum of R5000, which will qualify
you for a minimum grant of R20 000,
and a maximum of R100 000, which
will qualify you for a maximum grant
of R400 000.
Your contribution doesn’t have to be
cash only. Agricultural assets integral
to your operation can be counted as
contributions. The total monetary
value of these assets will be calculated
to determine your contribution
amount. Payments still outstanding
on financed assets will not affect
your contribution amount – the full
value of the asset will be taken into
consideration. Examples of assets that
will be considered are:
Property
Machinery
Equipment
Livestock.
Land that you obtained through a
previous grant, restitution, tenure
security grant or donation cannot be
used as your own contribution. Labour
can also be considered as part of your
contribution, but the labour units can
only be equated to a maximum of R5
000 of your own contribution.
How to apply: In order to qualify for
this agribusiness government grant
applicants will need to comply with the
following criteria:
• Previously disadvantaged individuals.
• At least 18 years of age.
only for agricultural purposes.
• Have the intention to farm on a fulltime
a safety-net project.
• You can’t have a current position
inside government structures.
• After you’ve acquisitioned the land,
be prepared to participate in a training
programme.
• You’ll need to be in a position to
make your own contribution, whether
by monetary funds, assets owned or
labour units.
• If you’re applying as a group, you’ll
need to be an organised business.
• Have your own bank account.
incentive programme that is offered
SPORT
July 2018
Marvellous Zondi
Sports has the power to
influence masses, apart from
being just about fun games and
accolades. Professional sports people
can also use their names to make
monetary gains for themselves. There
are brands that when you think of, a
certain athlete crosses your mind. An
example for this is the relationship
between Puma and Usain Bolt, Tiger
Woods and Nike as well as Lionel
Messi and Adidas to mention a few.
Brands are continuously changing
the game when it comes to creative
marketing campaigns focusing on an
athlete endorsement
Such endorsements usually continue
beyond an athlete’s active years
in sports, even after retirement
some of these athletes engage in
ambassadorship deals with these
brands. A lot of brands are receiving
a good feedback from such deals, so
much that they are even endorsing
upcoming athletes who have not yet
made a name for themselves at an
international stage.
So what can a budding athlete do to
secure sponsorships and also make
monetary gains off the field?
Here are a few pointers on how to go
about doing that.
one singles title every year between
2003 and 2015. Sharapova is the
highest earning female athlete in the
