Major announcements
at this year’s Indaba
Marvellous Zondi
The world’s third largest tourism
event, the Africa Travel Indaba
took centre stage on 8-10 May 2018
at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention
Centre. More than 6000 representatives
from 80 countries around the world
graced this year’s event.
This show attracts buyers, exhibitors,
media companies and tourism
stakeholders with the aim of creating a one
stop shop for the promotion of various
tourism sectors.
This year’s event hosted 476 main
exhibitors, 644 sharing exhibitors and
1747 buyers.
On the first day of the event, KwaZulu-
Natal MEC for Economic Development,
Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Sihle
Zikalala announced that there’ll be a new
British Airways airline flying directly
from Durban’s King Shaka International
Airport to London’s Heathrow Airport.
This airline will enhance economic growth
and strengthen the working relationship
between the two cities and is planned for
29 October and it’ll be operating 3 flights a
week, using the Boeing 747-8 Dreamliner.
EThekwini Municipality Deputy Mayor,
Fawzie Peer lauded this partnership and
cited that it will make a sizable impact in
growing the economy of our province.
“We view this as a direct response to
our efforts of our marketing strategy
of taking Durban to the world and the
world to Durban. UK is one of our key
source markets and we are confidence
that this will make a sizable impact in our
endeavour to drive conversions in our
community”
Peer also announced the refurbishment
of the Dube Trade Port and King Shaka
Airport with the view of enhancing access
to markets as well as the extension of the
Suncoast and Isibaya Casinos. Another
major endeavour is the Cruise Terminal
which will connect with the Durban
harbour, this will cost over R30 billion
and will create 11 000 construction
jobs and 6970 permanent jobs after
completion. Furthermore, there
were ministers from more than nine
African countries and representatives
from 22 African countries at this
year’s event, Zikalala urged them and
all other stakeholders to work towards
intra-Africa trade.
“As the province of KwaZulu-Natal we
continue to encourage intra-Africa
trade, for us as African countries, it is
easy to trade with European countries
but we find it difficult to exchange
programmes and trade relationships
within the continent”
This year’s Indaba came at the time
where President Cyril Ramaphosa
announced during his State of the
Nation Address that the government
will strengthen support for
destination marketing.
“We will enhance support for
destination marketing in key tourism
markets and take further measures
to reduce regulatory barriers and
develop emerging tourism businesses.”
Said the president in February.
The Umngeni Community
Empowerment Centre (UCEC)
is a non-profit public benefit
organisation aimed at uplifting the
society through a range of services such
as counselling and skills development.
This organisation has been in existence
for 15 years and has eight flagship
programmes under its belt, namely; the
salt of the earth – Serving lunch to over
1000 homeless beneficiaries monthly,
Early childhood development – Through
one of their projects, Impumelelo crèche
and pre-school, UCEC caters for eighty
children mostly whom are orphaned or
HIV positive and Vukuzenzele – where
they help beneficiaries to a self-sustained
life. UCEC is currently running a
sewing and beading class as well as fine
arts. These are just a few programmes
ran by UCEC, others include Student
internship, light of the world and the
anti-human trafficking campaign. The
latter is, according to Gloria de Gee,
their biggest programme and they work
with various government, civil society
and social parties to create awareness
and prevent new human trafficking cases
from occurring. This awareness reaches
up to 10-thousand people a year.
“We are big against human trafficking,
we host an annual walk against human
trafficking. This year we will host it on
the 6th of October” said Gloria.
UCEC has been in existence for 15-years
without any funding from government.
The organisation also has a soup kitchen
where they cook for their beneficiaries.
Apart from feeding the stomachs, UCEC
also helps to boost the self-esteem of its
beneficiaries through counselling and
rehabilitation.
“Before every meal, we try to talk to
them and offer them support, we tell
them that they can still pick up the
pieces and get their lives back on track”
said Gloria before adding that they also
help unemployed youths find jobs.
Gloria recently established a recycling
company called Oasis 828 to help fund
UCEC. The organisation also has a few
companies which help to keep it going,
namely; SA Shipyards, SA home loans,
Transmed shipping and 3C technology.
Business Development
Community development breeds community growth
Marvellous Zondi
Community development projects
are instrumental in changing the
livelihood of the people and enhancing
the economic growth of an area. Over
the years, the government has played
a huge role in ensuring that previously
disadvantaged communities have access
to clean water, electricity and that they
are accessible through constructing
black top roads and bridges.
Most recently, Maphumulo
Municipality announced that there’ll
be a construction of a black-top road
which will join the D1530 with the
R74 Highway. Currently at Macambini
Area, there is an electrification project
in ward 8 which goes concurrent with
housing projects in other wards. Such
projects ease community members of a
lot of burdens and enable them to think
of ways of improving their lives, be it
through business or skills development.
Earlier this month MEC for Department
of Transport, Mxolisi Kaunda visited
three completed uThukela river bridges.
Facing crocodiles and the possibility of
drowning while crossing Uthukela River
will be a thing of the past for school
learners of KwaDukuza and Maphumulo
in the Ilembe District following the
MEC Mxolisi Kaunda
completion of three major bridges across
the stretch of the biggest uThukela river.
The community is now able to safely use
Nyakana, Mabhobhane and Mvumase
bridges to access important amenities
such as schools, clinics, taxi ranks and to
connect to the nearest towns.
The Nyakana Uthukela River Bridge,
constructed at an investment of
R89.5 million with a provision for
pedestrian crossing, serves learners
and communities from Mankenganeni
community on the northern side of the
river. It links Umlalazi and KwaDukuza
Local Municipalities.
Previously, the communities had relied
on the services of a Good Samaritan,
Amos Dludla (65), who used his boat
over the years to help the learners
cross safely every morning from
Mankenganeni to Emdlebeni.
Mabhobhane Uthukela River Bridge
links Umlalazi and Maphumulo
Local Municipalities and assists
school learners attending Inkonjane
Primary School, Embusweni Primary
School, Inkonjane Secondary School,
Phandaphansi Primary School and the
Mpungeni Primary School.
These projects are very important as they
also enable swift business exchanges,
improves accessibility, communication
and wellbeing of the people.
needed financial boost to in-house
“We are very pleased that as the
province of KwaZulu-Natal, some
of the incubators that we are
continuously doing as well to try and
improve the work of the SMMEs and
also to try and bring particularly the
young people within the mainstream
of the economy but key to that we have
been talking about the lack of capacity
for us in the whole province to be able
to reach out to as many of those small,
Various stakeholder who were in attendance during the
stakeholders meeting among which is, keynote speaker Mr.
Barlow Manilal (Blue tie), MEC for Cogta, Nomusa Dube (cream
(Brown dress), Precious (Flowery dress) and Smart Xchange CEO
Jonathan Naidoo (Mustard t-shirt)
medium and micro enterprises , those
young people who are hungry and
energetic for any kind of support to be
able to bring about their innovations
to the mainstream of our economy”
said Dube before commending big
corporations who continue to support
SMMEs.
“It is encouraging to see well
established commercial businesses
and institutions giving back to the
communities and helping to develop
our human capabilities and capital”
said Dube.
Among those in attendance was Chief
Executive of Technology Innovation
Some of the innovators who were awarded with money during the
Smart Xchange stakeholders breakfast meeting.
Agency (TIA) Mr. Barlow Manilal
who delivered the key note address
and urged the stakeholders to broaden
their reach to cater for youth, people
with disabilities and mostly African
women.
Meanwhile, the Smart Xchange
CEO, Mr. Jonathan Naidoo
announced that they aim to join the
Youth Employment Service (YES
Programme) launched by President
Cyril Ramaphosa earlier this year
with the aim of creating 100 start-ups
focusing on youth and women from
Townships and rural areas.
Furthermore; the innovators which
were awarded with cheques to enhance
their businesses include, Solar Cell,
mention a few.
The story of the jewels of iLembe District
there are plenty other spearheaded by
the Enterprise iLembe.
According to Enterprise iLembe board
chairperson, Khanyisani Shandu it is
this project and many others that the
agency continues to support that have
improved the lives of the people from
iLembe District and also highlighted
the importance of attracting people to
come to this district.
Enterprise iLembe CEO, Nkosinathi Nkomzwayo and Enterprise
iLembe Board Chairperson, Khanyisani Shandu showing the
Seventeen Eighty Seven wine which is made in Ilembe District.
Marvellous Zondi
The iLembe Vineyard and Winery
project was funded by the department
of Co-operative and Traditional Affairs
(COGTA) and implemented by the
economic development agency for
iLembe District, Enterprise iLembe.
Ten hectares of vines have been planted
across three municipalities under
iLembe District, Mandeni, Ndwedwe
and Mapumulo and the winery is
situated at the Sugar Rush Park just
outside Ballito.
The beautiful coastline and rich
landscapes of the region provide
a perfect location for the iLembe
Winery. Local farmers grow and
harvest the Villard Blanc cultivar vines
with uncompromising attention to
detail.
The wine collection originally began
with a trial that proved to be successful
with the birth of the first bottle of
Villard Blanc.
This took three years to grow, however
the brand of Seventeen Eighty Seven
Wine has now been refreshed and
cultivars expanded by bringing in other
South African wines to compliment
the brand and includes the following,
Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Merlot
and Cabernet Sauvignon. This is not
the only project under this region as
Shandu also lauded the community for
contributing and
“The community of iLembe region
have really welcomed our initiative of
helping them, especially subsequent
farmers, we have helped them to
grow, we now have a new programme
where we have opened doors for them
to plant vegetables for the national
school’s nutrition programme and
also to equip them to be able to supply
commercial markets” said Shandu
before adding that the North Coast has
a potential of being a tourist attraction.
“When people come from all corners
of the world they must not only come
to Durban but they must know that
also we are there as the North Coast
particularly the municipalities such
as Indwedwe where we have the
Sibudu caves, kwamaphumulo we have
Kwashushu hot springs, we have a lot
of toursist attractions such as King
Shaka’s grave at KwaDukuza.
We also have UThukela River, one of
the historical rivers running through
Mandeni Municipality” said Shandu
adding by urging investors and tourists
to cast their nets to the north.
What You Should Know
By Phumelela Projects
Introduction
What is market research?
Market research is a systematic,
objective collection and analysis
of data about your target market,
competition, and/or environment
with the goal being increased
understanding. Through the market
research process, you can take data – a
variety of related or non-related facts
– and create useful information to
guide your business decisions. Market
research is not an activity conducted
only once; it is an ongoing study.
Benefits of Market Research
Information gained through
marketing research isn’t just “nice to
know.” It’s solid information that can
guide your most important strategic
business decisions. Market research
is effective when the findings or
conclusions you reach have a value
that exceeds the cost of the research
itself. For example, if you spend R1500
on market research activities that
yield information leading to a revenue
increase of R15 000, the research was
well worth it! Suppose you spend
R1500 on a customer survey that
uncovers an unmet customer need.
You’ll have the opportunity to offer a
new product or service (or alter your
existing product or service) to meet
the need and gain new revenues.
(1) Market research guides your
communication with current and
potential customers.
Once you have good research, you
should be able to formulate more
affective and targeted marketing
campaigns that speak directly to the
people you’re trying to reach in a way
that interests them. For example, some
Market Research
retail stores ask customers for their zip
codes at the point of purchase. This
information, which pinpoints where
their customers live, will help the
store’s managers plan suitable direct
mail campaigns.
(2) Market research helps you identify
opportunities in the marketplace.
For example, if you are planning to
open a retail outlet in a particular
geographic location and have
discovered that no such retail outlet
currently exists, you have identified
an opportunity. The opportunity for
success increases if the location is in a
highly populated area with residents
who match your target market
characteristics. The same might be
true of a service you plan to offer in
a specific geographic area or even
globally, via the internet.
(3) Market research minimizes the
risk of doing business.
Instead of identifying opportunities,
the results of some market research
may indicate that you should not
pursue a planned course of action. For
example, marketing information may
indicate that a marketplace is saturated
with the type of service you plan to
offer. This may cause you alter your
product offering or choose another
location.
(4) Market research uncovers and
identifies potential problems.
Suppose your new retail outlet is
thriving at its location on the main
road through town. Through research
you learn that in two years, the city is
planning a by-pass, or alternate route,
to ease traffic congestion through
town. You’ve identified a potential
problem!
(5) Market research creates
benchmarks and helps you track your
progress.
It’s important to know, for later
comparisons, the position of your
business at particular moments in
time. Ongoing market research allows
you to make comparisons against your
benchmark measurements as well as
chart your progress between research
intervals (such as successive annual
surveys). For example, you might
establish a benchmark measurement
of your target market demographics
and learn that 65 percent of your
customers are women between the
ages of 35 and 50. One year later you
gain survey your customers and learn
that this age group now represents 75
percent of your customer base. You’re
tracking a trend in your customer
demographics.
(6) Market research helps you
evaluate your success.
Information gathered through market
research helps you to determine if
you’re reaching your goals. In the
above example, if your product’s
target market is women between the
ages 35 and 50, then you’re making
progress towards your goal. (if not,
this information can indicate a needed
change in marketing strategy!)
What Market Research Can Tell You
Market segmentation
Studies provide information about
the characteristics shared by your
customers. This data provides answers
to questions such as:
• Who are my customers?
• What is the size of their population?
• What percentage is female?
• What are their ages, races, income
and education levels?
• What are their occupations, skills,
interests and hobbies?
• How many children do they have?
• Do they have pets?
• Where do they live and work?
Purchasing power and buying habits
information
Uncovers the financial strength and
economic attributes shared by your
target market. Some questions to be
answered include:
• What is the average Rand amount
spent on purchases or products or
services similar to mine?
• What are the financing needs of my
target market?
• What is their current usage of my
services?
• When do they purchase?
• Where do they shop?
• Why do they decide to buy?
• How often do they buy?
• How much do they buy at a time?
• Do they own or rent their homes?
• What types of cars do they drive?
• How often do they eat out?
• How do they typically spend their
disposable income?
• What method of payment do they
use?
• How strong is their credit?
Psychological aspects of the market
Is information regarding the perceived
opinions and values held and shared
by consumers in your market.
Questions to be answered:
• What is the reaction of the market to
my programs or serviced?
• How does the market compare my
company to other businesses?
• What qualities and characteristics do
my customers deem important?
• Who makes the decisions to buy in
the family or company?
• What are the deciding factors in
making a purchase?
• Do they only want the best for their
family?
• Are they looking for convenience
and timesaving devices?
• Are they concerned with how they’re
perceived by others?
• What are their unmet needs?
• Do they demand intensive customer
service?
• Are they only concerned with the
lowest price?
• What media (magazines, radio, TV,
newspapers, Internet providers, etc.)
are they exposed to?
• What confuses my customers and
prospects?
(To be continued).
Africa’s growth is picking up and could
rise faster than forecasts. Inflation is
settling lower than before and repo
down to 6.5%, but projected to rise in
2019/20.”
Thulisile Radebe stated that,
“Domestic risks have dissipated,
growth somewhat stronger, risks
to the upside, global conditions
becoming less favorable while fine
, lead Economist& policy Analysis unit
The highlight of the discussion
highlighted that South Africa’s growth
has improved while inflation has
declined. The South Africa economy’s
growth better than expected in 2017,
“For the past four years, the
Networking Dinner sessions have
provided a unique platform for
women in the tourism industry,
stakeholders and experts to share
ideas on building strong business skills
and leadership capabilities amongst
women. The ultimate goal is to
enhance and nurture more top leaders,
entrepreneurs and industrialists in
the sector,” highlighted the Deputy
Minister.
In her opening speech, Deputy Mayor
Fazwia said “Women are usually
sideline in the economic process so
a network as this is important for
women in their empowerment and
emancipation”
The challenges facing women however
are their concentration in the low
status, low paid, and precarious jobs in
the sector.
“Women make up nearly 70%
of the workforce in the industry,
however, there is a marked underrepresentation
of women in senior
positions, with women holding
less than 40% of all managerial
positions, less than 20% of general
management roles and between 5
to 8% of board positions. Tourism
offers the potential for women to hold
leadership positions, however, women
still only represent one fifth of all
tourism ministers and tourism board
chairs. This is one of our women
empowerment
flagship events that
sees women not
only from South
Africa but from
the rest of the
continent, taking
time to network
and expand
their business
and professional
horizons”, the
Deputy Minister
concluded.
Event organizers
of regional tourism products, and
ensure the growth and sustainability of
the African tourism market,”
The discussions emphasized the
need for tourism repositioning, image
Education
Fruitful seminar for SMMEs in Eco-Tourism
Oyewo Adetola Elizabeth
On 09 May 2018, the National
Department of Tourism, provincial
government and SMEs in the ecotourism
presented opportunities
and challenges in the tourism sector
during the Tourism Investment
Seminar (TIS), a platform to provide
an opportunity for domestic and
international investors to interact
with a wider range of product owners,
development finance institutions,
major international airlines, travel
trade, policy makers, and senior
government officials. This seminar was
aimed at assisting the Department of
Tourism to assess investors’ interest
in South Africa’s tourism investment
projects and opportunities including
coastal and marine tourism (CMT)
projects, as well as other sub-sectors
such as the conservation-tourism
nexus.
According to minister of Tourism,
Darek Hanekom, investing [n the
quality of visitor experience is crucial.
“The growth in tourism is not
only dependent on infrastructural
investment alone. We need to invest
in the quality of the visitor experience
that we offer, in order to attract more
investment. To do this, it is important
to continuously sustain and enhance
our products”, said the Minister, as he
elaborated on the recently approved
National Tourism Sector Strategy.
Investment opportunities in the
tourism sector are often found around
major attractions such as the world
heritage sites, national parks, and
beaches and in areas which have
established themselves as premier
destinations for meetings, conferences
and major sporting and cultural
events.
“There is an urgent need to reposition
our product offerings which could
guarantee an increase in demand. In
some of the major attractions such
as the Kruger National Park and
Pilanesberg National Park, though
seasonal, demand already exceeds
supply. However, there seems to be
a lack of bankable tourism projects,
despite the positive demand dynamics”
further said Hanekom.
The seminar participants urged various
development finance institutions and
the private sector to continue to tailor
make financing packages for tourism
related investment which sometimes
require non-traditional approaches to
risk assessments associated with any
financing mechanism for economic
infrastructure and assets.
Also in attendance was Thembani
Mabasa of Industrial Development
Corporation. Mabasa, discussed the
opportunities and funding for SMMEs,
criteria for funding and why certain
funding applications are rejected and
various other issues affecting SMMEs
in tourism.
freedom charter, participatory
democracy, statutory requirement
and the process of consultation as
an imperative part of the budgeting
process. According to Deputy Mayor
Fawzia Peer, ‘the R45.8 billion budget
will create jobs in partnership with
the private sector’ she also stated
that eThekwini is on an investment
drive to promote the city with the
KZN Ebandla investment drive to
the United Kingdom planned for 5
to 9 June. The strategic objective of
this initiative is to further promote
Durban as Africa’s premier investment
destination. According to Peer, this
will deliver on the call for all spheres
of government to proactively secure
accelerated investment and job
creation. This requires City leadership
to engage in high level discussions
with the UK cities of Newcastle and
London business leadership. To extend
and deepen government and business
relations as well as bilateral investment
drives to Durban. The focal point is to
create as much exposure for the City
and catalytic projects and to further
cement foreign direct investments into
the region. It will also create a platform
for further investment-ready flagship
projects across the whole province in
a demonstration of intergovernmental
cooperation and multi-stakeholder
in eThekwini .These spatial corridor
and current investor-ready projects
include Beachwood Resort,
Blythedale Coastal Resort, Coastlands
Tongaat Hulett Developments. As well
as Durban Point precinct, Durban
Development, Richards Bay Industrial
Development Zone precinct. The
actual investment corridor stands
at 95%, these corridors are open for
investment.
In term of ‘unemployment, eThekwini
is approximately 22%, we aim to
reduce unemployment through these
catalytic project’ , said Dr Krish
Kumar .
He stated further that eThekwini
finances is healthy as attested to by the
audit report with improvement in A+
credit rating, while the consumption
of services such as electricity and
water decreasing as a result of water
saving measures. Water tariff at the
municipality is 15% but Umgeni
water at 13.7%. Anticipated tariff on
sanitation will be 9.9% in 2017 to
9.9% in 2018 because of informal
settlement and land fill.
Similarly Dr Krish Kumar pointed
out challenges in the city such as low
growth rate, huge backlogs as a result
of urbanization and no growth in grant
income.
Commenting on the presentation, the
President of the Durban Chamber of
Commerce, Musa Makhunga pointed
out on the need to ‘relook how we do
business in the city, citing the Verulam
Renowned DJ
launches academy
for entrepreneurs
SMME Staff Reporter
South Africa’s renowned DJ, Sibusiso
‘DJ Sbu’ Leope has partnered with the
3Sixty Financial Services Group (360
FSG) with the aim of developing the
minds and ability of young hustlers in
South Africa through his own learning
institution - The Hustlers Academy.
The Hustlers Academy is an
independent, privately funded
economic empowerment project
spearheaded by Leope to address
the overwhelming lack of jobs and
incumbent graduates into the system
on an annual basis. The 360 FSG is
a well-established financial services
company with a disruptive strategy
that offers clients more benefits for
their rand. The partnership represents
a meeting of the minds and the hearts
for the development of opportunities
for young South Africans.
According to Leope, this initiative
will produce the best sales force this
country has ever seen.
“We will train and educate young
hustlers to either be entrepreneurs
or corporate hustlers. Our training
programme and academy curriculum
will produce the best sales force this
country has seen and develop the
minds of hustlers to understand how
the world works and how to stand
out. In partnership with 360 FSG,
we will develop entrepreneurs who
start businesses and employ teams of
hustlers within an 18-month period.
‘The Hustlers Academy’ will take
in hustlers for training nationally
in multiple provinces providing a
practical and theoretical intervention
in the lives of those who are skilled and
restless,”
Group CEO and Chairman of 360
FSG, Khandani Msibi said that they are
adamant that ‘The Hustlers Academy’
will play a game-changing role in
developing and changing the way
corporates are structured in providing
a ceiling for employees as far as
earnings are concerned.
“Our approach to empowerment is
based on sustainability for the hustlers
who make it through the academy. We
will develop people mentally as well as
financially and make a serious change
in their socio economic position. DJ
Sbu has the potential to influence a
generation and he shows this on a
daily basis with his determination
to succeed. We are matching his
determination and passion for
economic empowerment with our
backing of the ‘The Hustlers Academy’
project. We look forward to changing
thousands of lives with a long term
impact,”
‘The Hustlers Academy’ is active
and running a pilot group of
hustlers through its programme in
Johannesburg. The academy welcomes
SMME
NEWS
11
Opportunities
SMME Staff Reporter
SMMEs (Small Medium and Micro
Enterprises) contribute around 40% of
South Africa’s gross domestic product,
and employ more than half of the
private sector workforce. It is estimated
that as much as 80% of new jobs in
world economies are being created
by SMMEs, making small business a
key player in the future growth of our
country.
The idea of starting a home-based
business is becoming more of a trend
in South Africa. People want to be at
home with their families rather than
waste precious time in traffic and at the
office. The idea of being your own boss,
being able to choose your own hours,
being more flexible with family and
friends and having control of your own
financial life is becoming more and
more inviting. With the unreliability
of future pension packages and
retirement annuities and the general
uncertainty of our future wealth, it is
becoming more and more necessary to
start creating one’s own nest eggs for
the future.
Starting a business from home is a
good way to save money on overheads
such as rent, utilities, insurance and
more. Having a business at home
is tax deductible. Even first-time
entrepreneurs find it easier to start
a business from home, allowing to
grow into a full-time venture. Start
on a part-time basis and develop the
business into a full-time homemade
success.
You can be a pensioner, a teenager, a
stay-at-home mom, be disabled or just
be a regular person with a passion to
achieve what you deserve.
We have outlined some of the basics of
running a business from your kitchen
table, garage, attic and spare bedroom.
Use these basic tips to help you start
your own business.
A. Do what you love
In choosing things, people tend to
10 Home Business for SMME’s
COURTESY - Loraine MARSHALL - the dti - Department of Trade and Industry - South Africa
Photographer
stick to what they know and like,
which also refers to starting your own
business. Find something you love and
feel good about doing, then figure out
how to get paid for it. Liking what you
do and knowing how to do it properly
will make for a more prosperous
business than if you don’t, so make
sure you decide on the right business
and choose something you love and
are familiar with. While nurturing this
business you will be spending plenty of
time making it work.
B. Have the right attitude
Don’t get caught up with the idea that
you will earn money quickly. Business
success is created by hard work and
dedication. You will reap the rewards
later, and they will be worth the work
and dedication. Remember this is your
business; nurture it like you would
your children. Patience and persistence
are two key elements required.
C. Create a plan to generate business
Hand out flyers, send out bulk emails,
and send out press kits to local
newspapers and corporate companies.
Investigate advertising and utilise the
power of word-of-mouth. Become
active in local small business groups,
get out and sell yourself and have
opening/introductory specials, etc.
These are some methods of how
to become known. Marketing and
advertising is costly, but is a good
investment for the future of your
business, although you must plan
properly before spending money on
this.
Use your existing equipment -
computer, printer, knitting machine,
sewing machine, etc.
1. Make and sell food products
Find your favourite recipe and
sell it, such as biscuits, vetkoek,
koeksisters, muffins, cakes, jams,
pickled vegetables, etc. Sell them to
Tuis Nywerheid shops, coffee shops
and even corporate offices. Start small
with low capital, charge to replace
ingredients, and make profit to build
up reserves.
2. Computer Design services
If you already have a computer and a
printer, design labels and advertising
pamphlets, type students’ projects,
CVs, etc. With the correct programs
you can design letterheads and
business cards.
3. Teach your craft
Are you good at a certain craft, and
others keep telling you they wish they
could also learn to be as good as you?
Well, share this talent - start offering
classes. You can teach one-on-one or
small classes. This can be from glass
painting, fabric painting, pottery,
sketching, bead craft, etc.
4. Music teacher
Do you already have piano and/or
other musical instruments? Teach
from your own home, or visit students’
homes. Singing lessons are also in
demand.
5. Sewing Entrepreneur
With your sewing machine and your
creative talent, start with sewing
alterations. Design and make clothes
for people from normal wear to
specialised evening wear to fancy-dress
costumes. With affordable, efficient,
professional work and creativity, your
business will grow quickly. Everyone
needs alterations.
6. Photographer
If you are talented with photography
and already have a good camera you
can hire yourself out to take wedding
pictures, 21st birthday parties, office
functions. Once your business starts to
grow you can build a studio at home
and move into doing things like family
portraits.
Take portrait photos of children at
schools and crèches. People love
their pets almost as much as their
children, so how about taking portrait
pictures of people’s beloved animals?
Photograph people at local clubs,
restaurants, pubs, etc and charge.
Don’t forget to get permission from
establishments first.
7. Handyman/ Carpenter
You already have the basic tools and
some know-how? It’s easy to market
yourself to neighbours and friends,
and thereafter word-of-mouth will
bring you further custom. Clients
usually pay for material upfront.
Start off with small jobs and as your
confidence grows you can start taking
on larger projects. You will eventually
specialise in a particular area of
business operation.
8. Mural painting
You are artistic and love to paint. Use
this talent and start painting murals.
Start on neighbours’ and friends’
walls. As your confidence grows
and you develop an idea of what to
specialise in, go to crèches, family
nurseries, corporates for advertising
commissions, restaurants, schools,
churches, etc.
9. Direct Selling
It is easy and there are so many
products to sell directly such as
homewares (Tupperware), cosmetics
(Avon, Sh’Zen, Avroy Shlain,
Annique), kids’ products (Smile,
Acorn) and costume jewellery (Honey,
etc). The start-up is a fairly small
investment, usually the acquisition
of a start-up kit from your local
agent. Most companies supply you
with sufficient help and guidance,
and thereafter it’s simply a matter of
showing booklets to people wherever
you are, obtaining orders, having
parties at your house, and so on.
10. Party Entertainer
Utilise your love of children. Buy or
get a costume made for you, such as a
clown outfit, magician suite, etc., and
entertain children at birthday parties,
fundraisers or children’s events. Make
balloon characters, juggle, clown
around and more. Rent yourself out
to children’s parties. Make flyers and
hand out to schools, churches, crèches.
Dear SMME Team
Thank you very much for your
informative content. Your
publication hits the spot, I also
follow your publication online and
on social media platforms. It is a
breath of fresh air and provides us
as SMMEs with a place we can call
home. I have been reading your
publication and it is timeless, I
keep copies so that I can go back to
them whenever I need information.
Hello SMME
I am a huge follower of your
publication, I got introduced to it
by my brother who works in one of
the retailers that you do your drop
offs at, he brings the publication
for me every month since I am a
small business owner. I also always
remind him whenever publishing
date approaches. With a great
newspaper like yours, I believe
that we will surely prosper and
also be equipped to handle our
businesses better. I have a small
tuck shop in my neighbourhood
and I already have a plan of how
to market it better and also how to
make it improve from being just
another tuck shop in the township
to probably being a big store
somewhere in the town. Thank you
very much.
Birding adventures in
the north coast
Marvellous Zondi
Tourism is a thriving and
lucrative sector under iLembe
region, this part of the province
boasts beautiful beaches such as
Dokodweni Beach, Blythedale
Beach and Izinkwazi Beach to
mention a few as well as state of
the art hotels and malls.
These however are not the only
things attracting people to
this region, birding tourism is
taking iLembe by storm.
According to Sakhamuzi
Mhlongo of Zululand bird
guide, the route covering
iLembe District through to
Umlalazi all the way to Richards
Bay attracts a lot of local and
international tourists.
There are rare birds which can
only be found in this region
“Out of 1050 recorded birds in
the Southern African region,
over 600 of those can be found
in KwaZulu-Natal. You can see
that there are a lot of tourists
who come to see these birds,
one other thing that makes
the Zululand birding route
famous is birds that can only
be found here, there is a bird at
Ungoye forest which is called
the green barbet, that bird can
only be found here in South
Africa and in Tanzania. So you
can imagine that bird watchers
really get a treat.” Said Mhlongo
before adding that most tourists
opt for the Zululand region
because it has a lot of locally
trained tour guides.
“Places like Matikulu are well
known for birding tourism,
because it’s close to a big city
like Durban.
We are getting a lot of tourists
who use our services” further
said Mhlongo who also added
that those who wish to venture
into the tourism sector must be specific on
what they want to specialise in.
The inception of the birding tourism has
helped to change the lives of a lot of people
within this region, according to Mhlongo, a lot
of young people have been trained to become
tour guides and are now sustaining their
families.
“We also work with small business owners,
as someone who is a tour guide specializing
in birds, I also know people who specialise
with transport, others have canoes and if I
need a bird which can only be reached using
their services we work with them” concluded
Mhlongo.
