Second revised and enlarged edition of Trattner’s type specimen. Published seventeen years after his Wrst type specimen, this is altered and extended by 14 leaves, and is the most complete record of the type used by Trattner in the eighteenth century. In four separate sections roman letterforms, German and exotic types and ornaments are displayed. While Updike is scathing in his critique of Trattner’s roman types, he is more complimentary on the ‘very good schwabacher fonts’, and praises the ornaments, derived from French work of the period, and displayed with much ingenuity. The printer, publisher and bookseller Johann Thomas von Trattner (1717–1798), was the dominant Wgure of the eighteenth century Austrian book trade. All of Trattner’s type specimen are rare, but this most comprehensive one is apparently the rarest of them all. Second edition of this study of animal psychology and behaviour for children. Trimolt maintains that animals, both domesticated and wild, show signs of intelligence. He gives a number of anecdotal examples of their ingenious behaviour, such as cats opening door etc. In individual chapters he analyses animal perception, their expectations, and their observations. He gives numerous examples of animal intelligence, and explains the motivation for speciWc actions for his young audience, without resorting to anthromorphism. In his Wnal chapters he comments on the language of animals, the trainability of animals and their intelligence. He particularly singles out dogs, elephants, monkeys, some birds, and donkeys. The work was Wrst published the year before. First edition, rare, of one of the most important Italian contributions to monetary theory in the eighteenth century. Published originally to secure for the author the chair in economics that had been created for Beccaria, the work examines the monetary debates of the 1750s but also the later ideas of Gianrinaldo Carli, Pompeo Neri and other European contemporaries who considered France’s dramatic Wnancial problems. Vasco clearly supports free trade, and envisages a new type of monetary system, which would abolish all types of restriction and accentuate the view of money as a commodity. He opposes government attempts to regulate the value of money, and outlines the evils resulting from the debasement of coinage, notably from the point of view of wage earners. In his discussion of the rate of exchange Vasco includes mathematical arguments, which led Theocharis to describe him as ‘the earliest writer on dynamic process analysis’. He then proceeded to translate his arguments into diVerence equations, and used them to derive equilibrium values and to demonstrate the convergence of the series which Vasco had only asserted. Vasco (1733–1796), was a major Wgure of the Italian Enlightenment and one of the foremost economists: ‘è il maggior economista piemontese del ‘700 e quegli che meglio rappresenta ... quell’appassionata e solida visione dei problemi sociali che si venne allora creando nella mente di alcuni subalpini a contatto con la cultura europea e italiana...’ (Venturi, III, p. 757). First edition, very rare, of Verri’s main economic work. ‘Count Pietro Verri (1728–97) ... would have to be included in any list of the greatest economists’ (Schumpeter, p. 178). The Meditazioni is his principal work, a complete treatise on political economy. He approached his subject from the side of human needs and wants, as Carl Menger and Marshall were to do in the following century. He pointed to the importance of a development of the means of communication for economic development. The more that transport is facilitated, the more the means of communication are extended and ideas multiplied, the more needs increase, the more commerce increases. Here Verri already out-
