FOCUS ON...
FIG CANADA
Our friends at FIG Canada are approaching
their 5th anniversary as members of the FIG
family and we thought this was a great time
for some of our newer ‘FIGs’ to get to know
our ‘Canadian cousins’ a little better…
Take a look at Nu-Era’s video below...
http://www.shipnuera.com/

CANADA’s NICKNAME IS ‘GREAT
WHITE NORTH’ because it’s a
‘GREAT’ big country… ‘WHITE’ with
much of the landmass covered in
snow and ‘NORTH’… well because
it’s in the north!

LONG-DISTANCE
INTERVIEW WITH
Q: Please tell us a little about Nu Era and how the
company evolved into a ‘global player’.
A: Originally, we focused on a few select lanes between the
US and Canada that we knew we could service extremely
well. However, as we grew, we expanded our reach across
all of North America. Our expansion outside North America
actually came from discussions with our customers. It
seemed that everybody wanted one thing. They wanted a
‘one-stop shop’. One company to do it all!
Q: Where are your principle market-places nowadays
and where do you see development opportunities?
JEFF DE SOUSA
CEO - Nu Era Logistics Inc.
international@shipnuera.com
Q: Please tell us a little about your upbringing
and career development in Canada.
A:Having been the son of immigrant parents, I was never
afraid of taking on hard work to make ends meets. One of
my first jobs was with my Dad’s roofing company, lugging
shingles up ladders for days on end. It was hard work but
it gave me a respect for earning a dollar that I still carry
with me today.
Q: How did you come to be involved in logistics?
A: After working construction for a while with my father’s
company, I struck out on my own as a tow-truck driver.
Although I loved working all across my home town of Toronto,
I wanted to take my love of driving down new
roads, so I became a long-haul truck driver, worked my
way up the ladder at my company until I became Logistics
Manager until I realized that I wanted to do things my
own way. So in 2008 I ventured out on my own and
founded Nu Era Logistics.
A: Our primary international business is focused on importing
and exporting between Europe and Canada. It currently
accounts for appx. 80% of our business. With the current
trade tensions between the US and Canada, I see the
EU becoming a bigger trading partner with Canada over the
next few years.
Q: You have worked with quite a few ‘household
names’ – you must have faced some interesting
challenges…
A: I think the one that sticks out the most was two loads of
glass and revolving doors we were delivering to the Empire
State Building in downtown New York. Our client had requested
that our trucks arrive at 07:00am and that lane closures
take place for2 hours. We could not be late as he had
an 8 man crew and a crane meeting the trucks to offload.
Our team arranged permits from the city for lane closures
and for NYPD officers to direct traffic and manage the lane
closure. Our trucks arrived on schedule only to find that the
client had mixed-up his dates and did not arrive in time to
offload the trucks! Our permits expired and the police forced
us to leave the area. After scrambling to find a suitable
warehouse in downtown Manhattan to house the project
and for us to re-arrange permits… The project was finally
completed some 3 weeks later!
Q: Where do you see the future ‘obstacles’ in
terms of global growth?
A: I’d say name recognition. We’re a relatively small company
in the industry, and when you reach out to companies in
other countries they want a name they can recognize.

Overcoming this issue starts with working hard with the contacts
we have to build a good reputation and building from
there.
Q: Tell us a little about your experiences working
with our FIG ‘family’…
A: I find one of the most valuable aspects of FIG is the FIG
Annual Conference, being able to meet the other Partners is
‘key’ to us. We’ve made a lot of great contacts at the conferences
we’ve attended and have always managed to leave
with more business plus we always have a great time!
‘KEEP ON TRUCKIN’
As well as offering a complete
global logistics package, Nu-Era
will manage your distribution
needs throughout North America!
Q: Talking of ‘families’… you are clearly very
‘family-focused’ (we have been delighted to welcome
your family and staff to our various conferences)
and even your ‘key-staff members’ seem
like they have become ‘extended family… is this a
strategy or are you just a ‘really friendly’ guy?
A: We don’t have any written policy about our ‘family atmosphere’
but it’s something that has evolved over time.
Both my kids have worked for the company at different
times and I try to keep things pretty relaxed around the
office. We get our work done but we can also share a laugh
and relax together from time to time. The great thing
about creating that family feel is that it comes back to
you—the co-workers who get that family feeling will
stick it out with you through good times and bad!
Q: Finally… which is the best brand of maple
syrup?
A: Canadian Finest - of course!
DID YOU KNOW???
Some interesting and lesser-known facts about Canada…
• Canada spans 9,984,670 sq km and comprises 6 time zones.
• Here’s another record: Canada has the world's longest coastline at 202,080
km and is the second largest country in the world.
• A bear cub named Winnipeg was exported from Canada to the London Zoo in
1915. A little boy named Christopher Robin Milne loved to visit Winnipeg, or
Winnie for short. His love for the bear cub inspired the stories written by his
father, A.A. Milne, about Winnie-the-Pooh.
• The Canadian motto, A Mari Usque ad Mare, means "From sea to sea."
• Canada has twice been invaded by the USA, first in 1775 and again in 1812.
• Canada holds the record for the most gold medals ever won at the Winter
Olympics, taking 14 Golds at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
• Canada was named through a misunderstanding. When Jaques Cartier, a
French explorer, came to the new world, he met with local Natives who invited
them to their 'kanata' (the word for ‘village’). The party mistakenly thought
the name of the country was "Kanata" or Canada.
• Canada’s only desert in British Columbia is only 15 miles long and is the only
desert in the world with a long boardwalk for visitors to walk on.
• And this leads us to what is perhaps the most surprising fact of all: Canada’s
lowest recorded temperature is as cold as Mars! In the small village of Snag,
in the Yukon Territory, the temperature of -63°C (-81.4°F) was recorded in
February 1947. On average, the surface temperature of Mars is about -60°C
NEW GROWTH OF FIGS LOOKING GOOD
FOR SPRING/SUMMER...
Most of our long-standing ‘FIGs’ will know that our team at FIG Admin will not ‘shyaway’
from making important decisions. We announced at our last FIG Conference
that we will be ‘pruning’ our membership and removing some ‘dead-wood’ from our
family. This programme is almost complete and we are delighted to welcome a new
‘crop’ of stronger and more vigorous FIGs to our family.
As one of the very few ‘exclusive’ freight networks in the world, it is vital to have
trusted, efficient and financially secure members in our team. One weak link and
our chain will not function efficiently. There is no place for non-active members or
those who do not contribute to the ‘greater-good’ of our ongoing success.
We have various measures in place to constantly monitor our FIG Partners including
our FIG ‘Gold Standard’ (NB: You will note that all our FIG Partners are graded
Gold/Silver/Bronze based on performance) and our Annual Review of fellow members
by our FIG Partners.
In the past few weeks we have removed members from INDIA and COLOMBIA for
poor performance and late payment - please take the time to check our listings on
the FIG website regularly. If a company is not listed - DO NOT WORK WITH THEM!
Over the past few months, we have added several new members, all with highly impressive
credentials. If you have not yet made contact, now is the time!
Index of Economic Freedom
Today, we live in the most prosperous time in
human history. Poverty, sicknesses, and ignorance
are receding throughout the world, due in
large part to the advance of economic freedom.
In 2018, the principles of economic freedom that
have fueled this monumental progress are once
again measured in the Index of Economic Freedom,
an annual guide published by The Heritage
Foundation, Washington's No. 1 think tank.
For over twenty years the Index has delivered
thoughtful analysis in a clear, friendly, and
straight-forward format. With new resources for
users and a website tailored for research and
education, the Index of Economic Freedom is
poised to help readers track over two decades
of the advancement in economic freedom, prosperity,
and opportunity and promote these ideas
in their homes, schools, and communities.
The Index covers 12 freedoms – from property
rights to financial freedom – in 186 countries.
We have listed the top 12 countries on the opposite
page. Our readers may be surprised to
note that our friends in Hong Kong and Singapore
are the most highly rated with USA -’Land
of the Free’(17) and Germany (25).
It is interesting to note which governments are
operating in a truly ‘free’ economy and which
are turning toward ‘protectionism’ as the realities
of a global economy materialise.
