They may be faced with difficult decisions that could significantly impact their financial future. Representatives from two financial services companies sought to help understand one aspect of retirement in a workshop at Mokena Community Public Library District on June 19. Bob Diamond, from Diamond Financial Services, Inc, and Jennifer Turkos, from Nationwide Financial, spoke to attendees at the workshop in an effort to educate them on how they can strategize improving their retirement plan and get the full benefit of Social Security. Some people may not know how to begin looking into filing for Social Security and what benefits they can get. “It’s real important to understand all the ins and outs of social security,” Diamond said. “There are 2,800 different rules. The second biggest reason is because someone told them to.” Social Security is a program designed to provide older Americans and disabled persons with a portion of the financial support needed to cover essential retirement costs. The program offers numerous benefits, such as lifetime retirement income, payments indexed for inflation, certain spousal and survivor benefits, and preferential tax treatment. Initially, Social Security was designed to help older Americans living in poverty during the Great Depression; however, more and more Americans solely rely on their monthly Social Security check as their only means of income. “It’s not just a check anymore that you get. If you’re going to do proper planning for retirement, you really need to look at Social Security because if you think of retirement income as a stool, Social Security would be one leg of that stool,” Diamond said. “It does pay to wait. Police Reports Police: Pair charged in connection with string of vehicle burglaries Richard Lee Witcher, 18, of 17849 John Ave. in Country Club Hills, and Osha R. Calhoun, 22, of 17736 Rosewood Drive in Lansing, were charged June 13 with burglary from a motor vehicle and credit card fraud. According to police reports, Mokena Police was advised that three subjects had been taken into custody by Will County Sheriffs Police and were in possession of burglary proceeds, some of which belonging to Mokena residents. Will County Sheriffs Police further advised Mokena Police to come to the scene and take custody of the subjects, Witcher and Calhoun. The third subject, a minor, was also taken into custody. Upon arrival, the officer was able to match the subject’s vehicle and physical likeness from several past surveillance footage images. All three subjects were then taken into custody by Mokena police and transported to Mokena Police Department. Mokena police were made aware that Will County detectives would be responding to Mokena Police Department to conduct a parallel investigation. As a result of questioning, police believe the pair to be behind illegally entering 10- 15 vehicles A search of the vehicle later resulted in locating several checks, a wallet with credit cards, two phones and chargers, and $800 in cash in the pocket of a pair of pants in the vehicle. The items recovered were determined to be property of Mokena residents. June 14 • Zachary A. Monahan, 40, of 252 S. Cooper Road in New Lenox, was charged with battery. According to police reports, an officer was dispatched to the 1100 block of West Lincoln Highway for a disturbance involving Monahan and an employee at the location. Upon arrival, the officer spoke with the victim, who reportedly told the officer that he was on his way out of the building when Monahan told the victim that he would see him later and, when asked why, Monahan began to hit the victim. The officer spoke with Monahan, who told him that he believed the victim was the same man who had slashed Monahan’s face in an unsolved case in New Lenox about two years ago. Monahan was then placed under arrest. June 11 • Michael D. Murray, 29, of 19352 S. Wolf Road in Mokena, was charged with criminal trespass to property. According to police reports, an officer was dispatched to the 19000 block of South Wolf Road in response to a person trespassing. Upon arrival, the officer spoke with the complainant, who informed him that the trespasser, Murray, had been ordered on June 9 to stay away from the property, after Murray was arrested that day for trespassing, as well. The officer was able to locate Murray nearby and place him under arrest. EDITOR’S NOTE: The Mokena Messenger’s police reports come from the Mokena Police Department. Wolf Road closure set to begin July 12 Submitted by the Village of Mokena Wolf Road will be closed for repairs to the bridge deck over Hickory Creek between Plattner Drive and Abbey Road in Mokena starting July 12. This Illinois Department of Transportation project, which will consist of fulldepth deck slab repairs, complete bridge deck concrete overlay and striping, is expected to take almost a month to complete, with Wolf Road scheduled to open again for through traffic by Aug. 10. During the course of construction, north/south traffic will be detoured to LaGrange Road, while La- Porte Road and U.S. Route 30 (Lincoln Highway) will continue to carry east/west traffic.
