Thumbs up? Sandburg hopes to keep its QB healthy
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Last year, Sandburg coach Scott
Peters couldn’t wait to see how
his quarterback - Ben Starcevich -
would perform.
It turns out he got only a peek.
Starcevich injured his thumb
the second game of the season
after showing some promise in a
season-opening loss to Lyons in
which he connected with Nicky
Shelton for a 72-yard touchdown
pass and a 27-yard completion
to Shelton to help set up another
score.
The Eagles finished 3-6 against
a schedule in which seven out of
nine opponents went to the playoffs.
“At the high school level, if
you lose your starting quarterback
and rely on your backups, it’s not
easy,” Peters said.
Summer ball is in full swing
for the Eagles and they were
involved in 7-on-7 competition
at Andrew High School on
June 20 and Starcevich and his
teammates scrimmaged with
the hosts, Tinley Park, Argo and
Crete-Monee.
Sandburg lost several offensive
players from last year but tailback
Andrew Schab is slated to be back
to chomp up some yards.
Defensive stars Alex Hisrchfield
(who has an offer from Butler
on the table) and Hamza Ismail received
all-conference recognition
in the SouthWest Suburban and
are back.
The Eagles welcome tight end/
defensive end Dylan Goodsell
from Casa Grande Union High
School in Arizona.
Sandburg opens the season on
Aug. 24 and Aug. 31 with nonconference
rematches with Lyons
and Curie. Then, the Eagles dive
into a river filled with sharks when
they face Bolingbrook and Class
8A defending state champion
Lincoln-Way East. Sandburg lost
to those two teams by a combined
score of 102-21 so the road could
start out bumpy before finishing
out the season with Thornton,
Lincoln-Way West, Stagg, Lincoln-Way
Central and Homewood
-Flossmoor.
“Let’s be honest, with Bolingbrook
and Lincoln-Way East, no
one is fooling anybody, we are
realistic,” Peters said. “East is
a defending state champion and
their best player (A.J. Henning)
didn’t play against us. But that’s
the fun of high school football.
To be honest, I wouldn’t want
to be in a conference where I
knew we would have seven guaranteed
wins.”
