Police say man shot woman multiple times
before killing himself outside P.F. Chang’s
Bill Jones, Editor
A preliminary police
investigation revealed a
59-year-old man likely shot
a 43-year-old woman “numerous”
times Sunday, June
24, before shooting himself
in the parking lot of an Orland
Park restaurant.
Police responded at 5:19
p.m. June 24 to a report of
gunshots in the parking lot
of P.F. Chang’s, 14135 S.
LaGrange Road, according
to a press release issued the
following morning by the
Orland Park Police Department.
Police reportedly arrived
to find a man, later identified
as Steven Shereyk, of Willow
Springs, lying dead next
to a vehicle from an apparently
self-inflicted gunshot
From June 24
wound. Inside the vehicle,
police found a woman, later
identified as Renee P. Isadore,
of Chicago, dead from
numerous gunshot wounds
that “appear to have been
fired by the male,” according
to the press release.
Police said the weapon
used was located, and there
was no ongoing threat to
public safety. There was “a
relationship between the
two,” but they were not married
to each other, according
to police.
Orland Park Police Chief
Tim McCarthy, reached by
phone June 25, noted the
weapon was a 9mm handgun
and the vehicle was an
SUV. He said Isadore was at
the restaurant to have dinner
with her parents, and
Shereyk knew she was going
to be there.
“It was domestic-related
as a result of a relationship
they were having that ended
recently,” he said.
The Cook County Medical
Examiner’s Office reportedly
was scheduled to perform
autopsies Monday, June 25.
Its daily ledger noted 5:33
p.m. as the time of death
for Isadore, but did not list
Shereyk by name, only another
autopsy from the same
incident location.
The investigation was still
unfolding as of press time Monday,
June 25. For the latest,
Cruise nights create memories, charitable
Gatto’s hosts events
4-9 p.m. most
Wednesdays this
summer
Mary Compton
Freelance Reporter
Hearing a car horn play
the first notes of the song
“Dixie” and seeing a car that
looks like a “striped tomato”
brought car enthusiasts to a
parking lot at Gatto’s in Orland
Park from 4-9 p.m. June
20.
Little did visitors who attended
the annual Cruise
Night at Gatto’s know they
were about to see two of the
top TV cars of all time.
“This is our first time
here,” said Marlene McCann
of Tinley Park.
McCann is the owner of a
replica of General Lee, the
name given to a 1969 Dodge
Charger driven in the television
series “The Dukes of
Hazzard” by the Duke boys,
Bo and Luke.
“I brought my 1969 Charger
from ‘Dukes of Hazzard,’”
McCann said. “I
think of Daisy Duke, who
went over the hood.”
McCann does not jump
through the driver’s side
window, like Bo, to get inside
the car, but it still gives
her a thrill to take it out.
“When I drive the General
Lee, people give me thumbs
up,” she said. “They want
to talk to you at a red light
about my car. Everybody
loves this car. We wanted the
TV cars. The next one will
be ‘Smokey and the Bandit.’”
Right next to McCann’s
car is what is known as the
Striped Tomato. It is her
husband’s classic 1970’s
“Starsky & Hutch” car.
Sean McCann drives history.
“We started
this cruise
night in Orland
Park, because
everyone had
a cruise night
except for
Orland. … This
is community.
People come out
and reminisce
about cars they
had back in the
day.”
Tom Santangelo — Orland
Park resident who
organized cruise nights
with Gatto’s
“When I was a kid, I
watched ‘Starsky & Hutch’
and always liked the car,”
he said. “I’m a retired policeman,
so the first opportunity
I got to get a car like
this, I did. I found this car in
Nashvillle Illinois. I bought
it from the original owner. It
was sitting in a field, I had
it shipped up here and had it
restored. It didn’t look anything
like this when I got it.”
Ford released a limited
edition “Starsky & Hutch”
replica Gran Torino, manufactured
at the Chicago
plant. One of these code “PS
122” units reportedly was
leased by Spelling-Goldberg
from the middle of Season
2 until the series’ end as a
backup.
“I got one of the original
Warren Ehrlich, of Orland Park, shows a photo of the 1956 Thunderbird convertible he bought it in 1970, while taking part
June 20 in Gatto’s cruise night in Orland Park. Photos by Mary Compton/22nd Century Media
Gran Torinos from the ‘Starsky
& Hutch’ show,’” Sean
explained. “They only made
about a thousand of them.
I wanted to get an original,
and that’s what this is. I got
the original bill with the
words ‘Starsky & Hutch.’”
Cars like this and more
led Orland Park resident
Tom Santangelo to go to the
owners of Gatto’s Italian restaurant
to get a cruise night
started.
“We started this cruise
night in Orland Park, because
everyone had a cruise night
except for Orland,” Santangelo
explained. “When I saw
the lot, I spoke to the owners
and it got started. This being
a perfect menu: we have the
lot , rooftop restaurant, great
food and great owners. The
John Agnos along with his son Blake, 4, of Orland Park, check out a 1968 Volkswagen
double cab during the free cruise night at Gatto’s parking lot.

“This is community. People
come out and reminisce
Santangelo has been involved
with cars as long as
he can remember.
“I used to play with cars
since I was a teenager,” he
said. “I built a custom conversion
van and a ’62 Chevy
from the ground up. In the
last 14 years, I’ve had 24
cars.”
Bridgett Ambriz, one of
the managers of the Orland
Park of Gatto’s, has worked
for the restaurant for more
than 17 years. She showed
up on her night off to enjoy
the cruise night.
“This is the third year
for cruise night at Gatto’s,”
Ambriz explained. “Already
starting out, this year has
been a success. New this
year are more raffles. We
have free popcorn. Last year,
I had a roller derby team out
here. The Stoli girls will be
coming out twice in July and
once in August, passing out
free Moscow mules. Every
week, we’re trying to do
something.”
In addition to showing off
cars, Ambritz and Santangelo,
along with the owners of
Gatto’s, wanted to do something
for the community.
Cruise nights are in the
Gatto’s restaurant parking
lot every Wednesday, weather
permitting. Last year Gatto’s
cruise nights went into
mid-October. Cars can begin
coming at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays.
The next cruise night is
slated for July 11, because of
the Fourth of July holiday
the Wednesday before.
“If you have a car you
Marlene and Sean McCann stand by their 1970s themed
cars in the Gatto’s parking lot.
“At 75, I love these cars, because
when we were teenagers we owned
these cars. … That’s why see
you’ll see old people in these old
cars, because it brings back the
memories of when they were a kid.”
Warren Ehrlich — Orland Park resident, on the
joy of cruise nights
want to show off, just show
up,” Ambriz said. “It’s free
admission. We also offer discounts
at the restaurant for
people who participate. We
have $2 beer specials. It’s
very family friendly. ... We
pick out a car every week
and do random giveaways.
The raffles are drawn at 8
p.m.
“The best part of these
cruise nights for us is that
the people that come and
participate, they bring their
cars and tell you their stories
and share a little about themselves.
We really appreciate
them.”
Brad Nelson, of Orland
Park, brought his 1968 Volkswagen
double cab.
“it’s a very rare automobile,”
he explained “This car
was in Las Vegas. He wanted
to sell it so bad that he paid
the shipping. I just changed
the color, fixed the engine
and changed the upholstery.
Tonight a guy brought a
DeSoto, which is another
rare car.
“Everybody that sees the
car has a smile; it gets a lot
of attention. Come on out
and see these cars. You have
muscle cars, Corvettes and a
little of everything.”
Going down another aisle
on cruise night, one can find
a 1956 Thunderbird, featuring
in one of pop culture’s
greatest movies.
“A lot of women want
to buy this car,” said Warren
Ehrlich, of Orland Park.
“When I went to see the
show ‘American Graffiti,’
Bridgett Ambriz, one of the managers at Gatto’s, and Tom Santangelo sit in the latter’s
GTO during cruise night.
Brad Nelson, of Orland Park, stands by his 1968 Volkswagen double cab during cruise night.
I said there’s my car in the
movie. When I came out,
there were about 12 people
around my car. I bought this
car for $800 dollars in the
early ’70s, It’s worth about
$35,000 now.”
As Warren walked around
cruise night, he remembered
moments in his life brought
to life by cars in his memory.
“At 75, I love these cars,
because when we were teenagers
we owned these cars,”
he said. “The classics are
now 1955-1957. I lived by a
lake, and I remember taking
a girl down to the lake in my
1955 Chevy convertible and
telling her there are submarine
races coming here. She
believed me.
“That’s the memories I
have of these old cars. That’s
why see you’ll see old people
in these old cars, because
it brings back the memories
of when they were a kid.”
Annual lemonade stand raises money for Treasure Chest
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
Frankfort resident Jack
Genis and his family have
a passion for helping The
Pediatric Oncology Treasure
Chest Foundation — an
Orland Park based nonprofit
which provides toys for children
with cancer — because
he knows that sometimes
a smile can be an effective
medicine.
Over the past 10 years
of hosting the Jack’s Back
Cupcake/Lemonade Stand
at their Laurel Drive home,
the Genis family has raised
more than $24,000 for Treasure
Chest. In 2018, they
added to that already impressive
total by selling delicious
cupcakes and thirst-quenching
lemonade on June 16.
The weather was hot and
so were sales, as the community
came together to enjoy
this heartwarming neighborhood
tradition.
“This weather is good for
the lemonade but bad for the
cupcakes,” Jack said.
Volunteers kept the cupcakes
safe inside Jack’s
house as long as possible to
keep the frosting from melting
in the heat and regularly
made trips to the fridge to
replenish their supplies after
each sale. Red velvet,
s’mores and Under the Sea
cupcakes were among this
year’s most popular options.
The lemonade — which was
donated by Berkot’s in Mokena
— kept everybody cool
and hydrated along the way.
“Our motto this year is,
‘Happiness is only a cupcake
away,’ and that’s exactly
what we’re doing, because
each cupcake will help bring
a smile to a Treasure Chest
child,” said Jack’s mom,
Shelly Genis. “We’ve seen
firsthand the benefit of Treasure
Chest, with Jack having
a blood virus when he was a
little guy.”
Jack is now a healthy
13-year-old gearing up to
enter Lincoln-Way East as a
freshman this fall.
The Jack’s Back Cupcake
& Lemonade Stand is not
just a passion for the Genis
family, as friends, family and
neighbors support the cause
by baking cupcakes, volunteering
to help out, and generously
donating whatever
they could to the fundraiser.
Local Boy Scouts and Cub
Scouts also were on hand to
do a good turn or two.
“Troop 237, Pack 101 and
Pack 237 are huge supporters
of us, always, and neighbors
have dropped off cupcakes,”
Shelly said. “It really
is a community event.”
Leo Minauskas of Troop
237 was happy to help, and
happy to try a cupcake or two.
“This one is really lemony,
and I like lemons,”
Minauskas said. “The candy
on top is really good and really
sweet.”
His mother, Jeanine, said
she was impressed with the
fundraiser and all the hard
work that went into it.
“It’s amazing,” she said.
“Leo’s been a Scout with
Frankfort Square for several
years, and he loves it.
We know that Jack does this
every year — this is our first
time here — and it’s pretty
amazing to see all the different
kinds of cupcakes. It’s
really nice to see the love
and support.”
Love and support are at
the heart of the fundraiser, as
Jack’s goal to help Treasure
Chest has become a passion
for the entire neighborhood.
“When I was younger, I
had something going on,so
we went to the hospital and
they had one of the Treasure
Chests there,” Jack said.
“We looked into the organization
to learn more about
what they were doing. I love
helping out Treasure Chest.”
they Treasure Chest, visit
saves Orland
Park home by
reporting fire
Bill Jones, Editor
An alert resident reportedly
saved a neighbor’s home
this month after calling 911
to report smoke and fire outside
of a garage on Jillian
Road in Orland Park.
The neighbor made the
call around 6 p.m. June 15,
according to a press release
issued the next day by the
Orland Fire Protection District.
Firefighters arrived as the
fire appeared to be spreading
from the garage to the home,
according to the release. The
fire reportedly was confined
to the garage and extinguished
within 15 minutes.
Light smoke damage was
noted inside the home, but
no injuries were reported.
The family was not home at
the time of the fire, according
to the district.
The fire originated outside
the garage, consuming
debris from a floor refinishing
project, according to the
press release. The cause of
the fire was under investigation.
Orland Fire was assisted
on scene by the Tinley Park
Department and Frankfort
Fire District, with several
other area fire departments
covering Orland Fire stations,
according to the press
release.
relations with the firm since
2003. Trustee Ruzich previously
noted she would abstain
from the vote because
her husband worked for an
insurance company that had
Horton Group as a customer.
She said the relationship
between her husband’s employer
and Horton Group
existed prior to his employment.
The board voted 6-0 to
approve a budget adjustment
for the 2018 Taste of
Orland Park. The $75,000
adjustment, adding money
to the general fund, follows
a formal agreement from
Palos Health and Loyola
Medicine to sponsor the
2018 Taste of Orland Park.
The current budget for the
event is $178,594. The
sponsorship money would
increase the estimated revenue
and reduce the Village’s
loss on the event,
with actual costs projected
at $215,000 and revenues
increasing from $99,000 to
$169,700 with the sponsorship.
Of the sponsorship,
$70,700 is allocated to fund
the actual Taste expenses,
with the remaining $4,300
to be allocated to other special
events, according to
Village documents.
“We had a challenging
budget,” Trustee Daniel Calandriello
said. “We need
those sponsorships.”
Village manager Joe La
Margo noted the Village is
not done finding sponsorships
to help offset the costs
of running the Taste.
“Thank you to the business
community for stepping
up and getting involved
in the community,”
Pekau added.
FROM THE TINLEY JUNCTION
Dead rabbit found to be infected
with rare disease
A dead rabbit found on June 13
in the 7500 block of West 161st
Street in Tinley Park tested positive
for tularemia, according to
the Illinois Department of Public
Health.
Caused by the bacterium Francisella
tularensis, the uncommon
infectious disease can affect humans
and animals. with rabbits,
hares and rodents being especially
susceptible. People can be infected
from exposure to infected animals,
according to Cook County Animal
and Rabies Control.
“If you have been exposed to
a dead rabbit or handled a dead
rabbit, contact your doctor,” said
Mark Rosenthal, deputy director of
Cook County Animal and Rabies
Control.
Dr. Connie Austin, a state public
health veterinarian and infectious
disease epidemiologist, said tularemia
is a rare disease with only 1-10
cases reported in the state per year.
It can be transmitted from direct
skin contact with infected mammals
(most often rabbits), from
inhaling the organism (most often
from running over a dead infected
rabbit with a lawnmower), and
from the bites of an infected tick
or deer fly. The bacterium is present
in some wildlife in northeast
Illinois, and some animals do not
show any signs, but can be carriers
and remain unaffected.
Symptoms of the disease in
humans range from mild to lifethreatening
and are usually accompanied
by a fever, flu-like
symptoms, rashes or red lesions on
skins, while animals can experience
fever, enlarged lymph nodes,
abdominal pain, jaundice and lethargy,
according to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention.
Residents are advised to monitor
pets while outside.
D122’s iCan Bike gets children off
training wheels
New Lenox School District 122
held its second annual iCan Bike
camp that wrapped up June 15.
The iCan Bike program was
created by the international nonprofit
charitable organization, iCan
Shine. Its purpose for being started
was for children with disabilities
to learn how to ride a conventional
two-wheel bicycle.
This year, there was an overall
total of 18 students participating,
from New Lenox as well as surrounding
areas such as Mokena
and Frankfort. In addition, a small
percentage of families came from
Indiana. Each day included a
75-minute session for children to
ride the bikes.
“It was a program that was previously
hosted by our local cooperative
and a few years ago stopped
being offered in our area,” said
Amanda Novotny, assistant director
of special education of D122.
“So we wanted to host. That way
we could provide it for our community
again.”
This year, the iCan Bike program
was gifted the help of the Lincoln-
Way Central football team. Close
to 40 players were being sent to
help out each and every day the
camp was in session.
“Just this morning, we had a
parent who said her son had been
trying for three years to ride a bike
and would get very upset when he
would see other children lose their
training wheels,” Novotny said.
“He was out there this morning riding
a conventional bike independently,
and just to see the students
and how excited and proud and just
them achieving, that is so fantastic.”
Social Security workshop offers
retirement strategies
Approaching retirement can be
intimidating for some. They may
be faced with difficult decisions
that could significantly impact
their financial futures.
Representatives from two financial
services companies sought to
help them understand one aspect of
retirement in a workshop held June
19 at the Mokena Community Public
Library.
Bob Diamond, from Diamond
Financial Services Inc., and Jennifer
Turkos, from Nationwide Financial,
spoke to attendees at the
workshop in an effort to educate
them on how they can improve
their retirement plan and get the
full benefit of Social Security.
Some people may not know how
to begin filing for Social Security
and what benefits they can get.
“It’s real important to understand
all the ins and outs of Social
Security,” Diamond said. “There
are 2,800 different rules. Some
people need the money at 62, but if
you don’t and you wait until your
full retirement age — depending
on when you were born, it’s either
66 or 67 — if you can wait from
full retirement to age 70 you get
an 8 percent raise every year if you
don’t take it.”
“Most people file at the earliest
age possible; 33 percent of people
do take their income from Social
Security at age 62,” Turkos added.
“Most people do that because they
need the money. The second biggest
reason is because someone
told them to.”
Bat found on driveway tests
positive for rabies
A bat found June 12 on the driveway
of a Homer Glen residence has
tested positive for rabies, bringing
the total number of rabid bats in
Will County this year to four, according
to a June 18 press release
from the Will County Health Department.
The bat was found alive outside
a home on 163rd Street in Homer
Glen, according to the release. Will
County Animal Control was contacted
to take the bat, which was
confirmed as rabid the next day at
the Illinois Department of Public
Health’s laboratory.
It also was determined that three
residents living in the Homer Glen
home did not have exposure to the
bat and did not need treatment, according
to the press release. An indoor/outdoor
cat living at the home
was sent to the veterinarian for a
rabies booster and follow-up treatment
as a precautionary measure.
On June 14, residents at a Joliet
home also noticed a bat flying
around, per the release. That bat
was reported to Will County Animal
Control and also tested positive
for rabies the following day at
the IDPH laboratory.
The two previous rabid bats this
year were discovered in Joliet and
southern Naperville.
Health officials said any bats
discovered in Will County should
be immediately reported to Will
County Animal Control at (815)
462-5633. The Will County Animal
Control program has a 24-hour
volleyball team
The Lincoln-Way East varsity
boys volleyball team was honored
during the Frankfort Board
of Trustees’ June 18 meeting after
winning a state title two weeks earlier.
On June 2, the team clinched a
20-25, 25-21, 25-22 victory over
Neuqua Valley during the Illinois
High School Association state
championship game in Hoffman
Estates. The win marked East’s
second state championship in five
years, and the team has made seven
state finals appearances in total,
including four in the past five
years.
The volleyball team was the second
Griffins varsity team to earn
a state title during the 2017-2018
school year; in November, the
football team secured the Class 8A
state championship with a 23-14
win over Loyola Academy.
Frankfort Mayor Jim Holland
presented the players and coaches
with a commemorative plaque and
read out loud a proclamation praising
the team for its “remarkable”
39-3 season and the titles they accrued:
Warren Township Invite
“You bring great credit to our
FROM THE LOCKPORT LEGEND
Three generations graduate from
Looking back six generations,
the Caneva family can pinpoint
how it all started.
Reno Caneva’s father owned a
men’s clothing store in Lockport in
1924, which also sold shoes, meaning
he had to fix or create them as
needed. Before his father moved
to Lockport, his great-grandfather
and generations before him were
all cobblers.
“From then on, we’ve been
working with feet; it’s kind of interesting,”
Reno said. “So that’s
where we come from.”
Reno, 82, was a podiatrist for 45
years before retiring in 2006 from
BILL JONES
bill@opprairie.com
Last week, Sports Editor
Jeff Vorva filled
in for me with The
Orland Park Prairie at large
and more specifically this
column space (thanks, Jeff!),
while I was on vacation
(maybe more on that in next
week’s column). And he
wrote an editorial about how
impressed he is with Orland
Park’s dedication to helping
veterans, especially those
who have been injured.
He focused on the fact that
Ozzie Guillen was scheduled
to come to town this week to
give a boost to the Disabled
Patriot Fund, as well as the
Wounded Warriors Family
Support’s High Five Tour,
which stopped at Omaha
Steaks in Orland Park Crossing.
He gave props to the
groups that organize these
efforts, the residents who
take part and the individuals
who come to town to drum
up support.
Well, don’t adjust your
eyeballs, because this is,
in fact, a new issue of The
Prairie, but we have two
more cover stories this week
related to support for injured
veterans. And I’m about to
second Jeff’s nod to Orland
Park on the subject.
The first story you already
likely spotted the second
your grabbed our paper with
your mail. Our News cover
story focuses on a car show
at Gatto’s in Orland Park,
which, in addition to being a
nostalgia trip for old car enthusiasts,
uses raffles to send
some money the way of the
Wounded Warriors. The second
you’ll find by flipping
the page, where our Life &
Arts cover focuses on the
work Orland Park resident
Dan Drew has been doing
for the past seven years with
Chicago Soldiers.
It all serves to drive home
the point Jeff made last
week, so I won’t reiterate
it in depth here but to say
that Orland Park goes above
and beyond in these types
of efforts. It’s heartwarming
to read others tell of
the dedication Drew has to
the cause, and to hear the
impact made by those his
organization supports. And
it’s nice to see a business
like Gatto’s finding a way to
help while providing some
fun for area families.
While I was all over the
place my week away from
the office, my wife and I
spent a few days in Napa
Valley. And while walking
around downtown Napa, we
came across a 9/11 memorial,
including beams from
the World Trade Center and
a list of casualties.
It took us aback. In some
ways, it seemed out of
place. While all of America
has a connection to those
tragic events, why was Napa
home to this display?
Of course, being out of
place might be the point. In
the middle of a space where
many go to enjoy a relaxing
vacation, where they enjoy
the luxuries of America’s
best wine, beautiful weather
and pampering accommodations,
it serves as a stark reminder
of the casualties and
the sacrifices that have made
this way of life possible.
It’s nice to see Orland
Park doesn’t need a reminder
to care for those who
have given so much for this
country.
Healing of persons enslaved
The Rev. Michael Foley
Our Lady of the Woods
There is a story about a
conversation a young
boy had with St.
Augustine.
Augustine was walking
along a beach, and he
came upon a beach where
hundreds of starfish had
washed ashore. There was a
small child who was picking
up the starfish and returning
them to the sea.
Augustine reminded that
child that he could never
save all the starfish, so why
was he trying. What difference
would it make?
The child responded, “If
even one is saved, it makes
a difference to that one.”
And so it does! We cannot
Pictured is the HOPE Garden outside Our Lady of the Woods in Orland Park.
Photo submitted
change the whole world, but
we can make lives better,
one person at a time. When
we do that, for that person it
is everything.
Sometimes, we can be
overwhelmed by the challenges.
Refugees become
statistics. The poor become
a number. The homeless are
part of the scenery.
The truth is, we call are
called to make this world
better, and we each can
do that, one person at a
time. We also can unite our
individual voices into one
expression that seeks to
change conditions that allow
suffering and injustice to
exist.
One of the great problems
in our world is human trafficking.
It is often unseen,
but for the millions enslaved
it is very real indeed. Let me
share some statistics.
Between 21 and 40
million human beings are
trafficked.
This includes domestic
servitude, bonded labor,
forced labor, child labor and
sex trafficking.
According for the National
Center for Missing and
Exploited Children, 1 out of
6 runaways are victims of
sex trafficking.
In the United States, at
least 57,000 people are held
in bondage, usually for illicit
sex.
I share all of this because
many churches around the
world are seeking to address
this problem. My own parish,
Our Lady of the Woods,
has a ministry dedicated
to raising awareness and
combating this scourge.
Information can be found on
my parish website.
On the west side of the
church, we have planted a
garden which we call HOPE
Garden, which represents
the words “Healing of Persons
Enslaved.” It is a place
of meditation.
What difference can we
make? If even one is saved,
it makes a difference to that
one.
Charity helping veterans started in Orland seven years ago
Chicago Soldiers
hold hockey benefit
for wounded vets
Jesse Wright
Freelance Reporter
Wounded veteran James Poggi (left) speaks with Frank Drew, uncle of Chicago Soldiers
founder Dan Drew, on June 16 during a benefit hockey game.
Photos by Jesse Wright/22nd Century Media
Eight years ago, Dan
Drew read a story about an
injured Marine name Yuriy
Zmysly.
Zmysly had done two
tours in Iraq, though he was
not injured overseas. Rather,
he was hurt at home, after an
emergency appendectomy
went wrong and his brain
was deprived of oxygen.
The incident left Zmysly,
a young man with a wife, in
a wheelchair and virtually
unable to communicate.
“My heart just hurt for his
wife, Aimee,” Drew said.
Yuriy was left with overwhelming
costs for care and
an uncertain life ahead of
him.
Jim Welsh, one of Drew’s
friends, remembered how
upset the story made his
friend. Welsh and Drew
played ice hockey. One evening
after a game, Welsh
and Drew, along with some
of the other players, found
themselves in a bar. Drew
brought up the wounded
Marine.
“He said, ‘I’m going to
help; I’m going to make a
difference,’” Welsh recalled
of Drew.
Not that anyone believed
it was anything more than
big bar talk.
“We all thought, ‘You’re
crazy,’” Welsh said. “But he
did it.”
Indeed, Drew founded
Chicago Soldiers, a nonprofit
that gives financial aid to
wounded veterans from the
Chicago area and, in 2011,
Zmysly was the first veteran
the group helped.
June 16, the Chicago Soldiers
organized another benefit
for Zmysly.
Each year since 2011, the
Chicago Soldiers have been
holding charity golf tournaments
to raise money.
Whatever the group collects
through tickets, donations,
merchandise sales and
through a silent auction, it
all goes to the veterans. Each
year, the event has gotten a
bit bigger, with the years
bringing more media and
more attention.
This year, Drew said the
Chicago Blackhawks got involved
and donated the use
of an ice rink for an event.
So, with the blessing of a pro
sports team, Drew organized
a few fun games of hockey
between friends, then a children’s
skate, topped by the
annual Patriotic Party. Drew
thought it would be nice to
invite Zmysly back for another
round of celebration.
“We didn’t raise that much
money for him [in 2011],
since it was so new and we
didn’t have time to really
prepare,” Welsh explained.
Aimee, Zmysly’s wife,
spoke on his behalf. She said
the support from Chicago
Soldiers has made a difference
in their lives.
“It’s huge,” she said.
“With any injury comes expenses,
and, being so young,
we have our whole lives
ahead of us. And to have the
financial support and also
the emotional support is
huge. You feel like they truly
appreciate his service and
that he served. And they support
the whole family. That’s
really valuable. It makes it
more special.”
Zmysly was not the only
wounded veteran on hand
June 16.
Last year’s recipient,
James Poggi, lost a foot and
was struggling to support a
young family when Chicago
Soldiers found him.
For Poggi, that help was a
long time coming. His health
problems started in Afghanistan,
and they followed him
home.
“I thought it was a back
injury,” he said. “They found
out it was a spinal cord injury,
and it degraded to spinal
meningitis.”
His health degraded, and
he lost a leg a year ago.
From there, he was confined
to a wheelchair.
“My kids had to push me
in my power wheelchair up
a hill and in the back of the
house, because that was the
only door that was wheelchair
accessible,” he said.
Poggi said his son would
ask him what would happen
if their Lake Holiday home
caught on fire. How would
his father get out?
Poggi had no easy answer.
It scared him, and it scared
his son.
Poggi was trying to support
his wife and children,
but medical bills made that
impossible. When Drew
found him, Poggi said he
was going to a food pantry
to get healthy food for his
children.
Poggi said the money Chicago
Soldiers raised changed
everything.
“The money raised paid
off my existing medical
debts that the VA wasn’t
covering, and it allowed
The Zmysly family — (left to right) Adelina, Aimee, Nikolai
and Yuriy, a wounded veteran — pose for a photo together
June 16 at a Chicago Soldiers event. They were the first
and most recent recipients of the charity’s efforts.
me to get occupational and
physical therapies for my
kids, because they’re both
special needs,” he said.
Aside from the money, the
publicity got Poggi out of his
house and into a new home,
designed for wheelchair access,
thanks to another nonprofit,
Team Rubicon.
“They helped me get out
of my home, and that allowed
me to put an application
in to get me a custom
home that’s handicapped
accessible,” Poggi said.
“And that wouldn’t have
happened without Chicago
Soldiers.”
Poggi and his family were
to move into that new house
this month. While the house
is outside of the Chicago
area, Poggi said he plans to
return to every Chicago Soldiers
event.
“We’re still going to be
Chicago Soldiers,” he said.
“That’s not changing.”
The Zmysly family also
moved. A year ago, they
moved into the Orland Park
area, and Aimee said the
move has been good.
“We love it,” she said.
“It’s a good community, and
everybody’s been very supportive.”
Drew said one reason his
charity has been so successful
is because there is
no overhead. Everything he
raises goes to the veterans.
“We don’t have any administration
fees,” he said.
“It’s myself, my wife, my
cousin, and my family and
friends who donate their
time.”
Frank Drew, Dan’s uncle,
said it was hard to resist volunteering
for such a good
cause.
“He’s a good guy, and he
was so convinced that this
was something he had to
do,” Frank recalled. “I said,
‘You know, sign me up.’”
This year, at the end of
the afternoon, Zmysly was
given $12,000 and Poggi a
check for $1,000.
“This is a good turnout,”
Drew said. “We didn’t know
what to expect, and this turnout
was great.”

The Dish
In kitchen, at bar, sisters draw creativity from late father
Quee Huynh’s creativity
in the kitchen at her
Orland Park restaurant, Q,
is the stuff of local legend.
Even when she tried to slow
things down in the past, she
somehow wound up with
new items both on and off
the menu.
It is a creative culinary
output quite possibly rivaled
only by that of her
sister, Ellie Huynh, who
similarly cannot stop herself
from whipping up new
drinks for Q at such a frenetic
pace that Quee has
refused to place some on
the menu for fear of overwhelming
their customers
with too many options.
“She actually stops me a
lot of times,” Ellie said,.
But savvy customers can
find her latest concoctions
on the restaurant’s Facebook
page and order them,
on the menu or not. Lately,
that means drinks like the
High Society ($10), which
features gin, bitter grapefruit,
thyme and smoked
paprika salt for a complexity
that makes it more advanced
than easy drinking.
That one even gave Quee a
moment of pause.
“At first, she didn’t like
this at all,” Ellie said, “But
it grew on her.”
Gin, in general, can give
many customers cause to
pause, according to Ellie,
who noted many are
“afraid” of the liquor.
“But it brings out a whole
different profile,” she said
of gin’s role in cocktails.
“It’s so fresh and clean. …
You just have to break down
the wall. You have to venture
out of your comfort
zone.”
For the unwavering, Ellie’s
new Dark Victory
drink ($10) features a rye
whiskey with a spicy blackberry
compote, Campari
and lavender bitters, and
should hit the spot. But for
the adventurous, Ellie also
is willing to experiment a
bit on the spot.
“We appreciate that, for
people to trust us and say,
‘You can do whatever you
want,’” she said.
For Ellie, inspiration
comes from a lot of places.
Some of it is as simple
as going out drinking and
coming across an idea
from a talented bartender
that inspires another idea.
Sometimes it is getting her
hands on new liquors. And
sometimes it is her sister’s
cuisine in an attempt to find
unique pairings.
“Every time I make a
drink, I tell her I need an appetizer,”
Ellie said.
And the family connection
at Q goes beyond the
two sisters. Ellie said she
also draws inspiration from
her grandfather and her father,
the latter the late Viet
Quoc Huynh, who taught
her how to drink properly
once she started.
While Viet Quoc remained
in Vietnam after
the girls left in their teens
and until his recent death,
customers have seen his influence
on Orland Park’s Q
both directly and indirectly.
The miniature bicycles in
many of the windowsills
were made by him, and his
knowledge and passion undoubtedly
drive what his
girls do in the kitchen and
behind the bar.
Quee said despite living
in a communist country, her
father was a “very knowledgeable
man” who kept
up on French and American
music, including the likes of
the Bee Gees, Deep Purple,
The Beatles, The Carpenters,
and Simon & Garfunkel,
collecting CDs and vinyl
of the popular artists.
“He wanted us to know
more about American culture,
because he admired
them at such a young age,”
Quee said.
“The Boxer” proved to be
his favorite song.
“He said it reminded him
of the story about the poor
little boy who tried to make
it in the big city, just like me
and Ellie,” Quee said.
Quee said she often discussed
her menu with her
father, and she shared last
year a photo of her Q-King
Duck, a special dish she
Ellie Huynh pours a drink she mixed at the bar of Q Restaurant in Orland Park.
Photos by Bill Jones/22nd Century Media
The Malaysian satay ($13 for grilled lamb, $8 for chicken) at Q features cucumber, a corn
salad and peanut sauce.
made for the restaurant’s
anniversary.
“He said it looked so
good; ‘you did it,’” Quee
recalled. “That was my last
dish that my father and me
[cooked] together.”
But Quee said the inspiration
they take from their father
is about more than the
food and drink; it is about
being good human beings
and not letting the world
change what makes them
who they are.
“He always told us not to
be afraid of anyone or anything,”
Quee said. “Go out
there and try your best every
single day.”
If what the sisters are doing
at Q is any indication,
there is no doubt Viet Quoc
would be proud.

Pride of Workmanship - Pride of
Ownership at Brookside Meadows
For over 45 years Crana
Homes commitment to
quality and customer
satisfaction has been summed
up as “Pride of Workmanship
- Pride of Ownership.” These
words are the foundation of
every one of the hundreds
and hundreds of new homes
that Crana Homes has
developed into amazing
communities. Now the luxury
townhomes of Brookside
Meadows in Tinley Park is
where home buyers once
again find unrivaled quality
in a Crana home.
But pride in workmanship
is only the first part of the
promise. The second part
is pride of ownership - the
key to customer satisfaction.
Crana Homes meets with
buyers to discuss what they
need and want in a new
home. Working closely with
customers gives the insight
and understanding needed
for the kind of customer
satisfaction that lasts long
after a home is finished. This
makes a Crana home not only
attractive and comfortable
but also a great investment.
Today, Crana Homes’ legacy
culminates in Brookside
Meadows’ newly opened
Phase II, a community of
award-winning, energyefficient
homes that sets
the standard for luxury
townhomes. Whether you’re
a first time buyer, an upsizer,
downsizer or just looking for
a great place to raise a family
early buyers still have plenty
of choices available in the
latest and final phase of this
quiet, secluded section in
Tinley Park.
The split level Fahan II
is a beautiful 3,303 total
square foot home (including a
1,216’ basement). It has three
bedrooms and two-and-half
baths with a two-car garage
and a cement driveway. A
fourth bedroom is optional.
The large open kitchen has
custom maple cabinets and
elegant granite countertops.
Maple cabinets are also
found in the batherooms and
laundry room. Overlooking
the great room is regal loft.
Gorgeous oak is used on
floors, doors, railings and
trim throughout. Ceramic
floor tile covers the foyer
and the bathrooms - which
also feature cultured marble
vanity tops. A full walkout or
lookout basement and a deck
is included.
Another award-winning
design is the Lennan II,
a comfortable two/three
bedroom split level home
that includes most of the
features of the Fahan II
except the spacious master
suite is located on the upper
level and a cathedral ceiling
is available as an option. The
Lennan II totals 3,167 square
feet of space (including a
1,049’ basement) and a
two-car garage with cement
driveway.
With Phase II prices
holding in the upper-
$290s (including site),
buyers are finding some
extra room for options like
a fireplace, coffered ceilings,
skylights and a soaker tub in
the master bath.
All homes at Brookside
No Money Down at Westgate Manor in Peotone
New Construction Homes from $239,900
Thinking hard about renting
instead of owning? Think again,
say the experts—who recommend
crunching the numbers carefully
to see which side of the fence the
grass is greener on. More often
than not, the greener side—as in
grass and money—is the one you
end up owning.
While it’s true that home
mortgage interest rates are slowly
on the rise, the same can be said
of monthly rents for residential
units, especially considering that
the greater Chicagoland rental
market has become more active
in recent months.
“Shoppers who don’t have
much of a down payment saved
up or who are worried about
qualifying for a loan due to a
moderate income can still share
in the great American dream of
homeownership,” said Bryan
Nooner, President of Distinctive
Home Builders. “Through our
preferred lender a new home can
be had with no money down so
they don’t have to worry about
raising money for closing costs
or a down payment. While some
conditions apply, for first-time
buyers and shoppers on a tight
budget, it’s the perfect scenario.”
“Over the long term, however,
the advantages of purchasing
and owning your own residence
significantly outnumber the
plusses of renting,” added
Nooner. “The most important
distinction between renting and
owning is the ability to build
equity in your property, which is
only possible with the latter. When
you purchase a home and pay a
monthly mortgage, the portion
applied toward principal every
month is your money coming
back to you—a reflection of the
value of your equity. One of the
other major boons to buying
a home is the ability to deduct
(within certain limits), your
property taxes and mortgage loan
interest on your yearly federal and
state income tax returns.”
The financing offer applies to
Westgate Manor buyers who opt
for a home mortgage loan through
Distinctive Home Builders’
preferred lender, who is available
to meet with home shoppers on
the weekends or by appointment
at Distinctive Home Builders
Single Family Home Center in
Manhattan at 24458 S. Rt. 52,
Manhattan, IL. 60422. Some
conditions apply, see a Distinctive
Home Builders representative for
complete details.
Peotone is a family-friendly
village and is one of the best kept
secrets among new home seekers,
according to Nooner. Several
factors attracted Distinctive
Home Builders to build 38 homes
at Westgate Manor, not the least
of which was its convenient
location between Interstate 57
and Illinois Route 50 and easy
access to I-80. Commuters enjoy
several nearby train stations and a
35-minute drive to Chicago.
Distinctive offers a wide variety
of home styles and selections
— buyers can choose among 12
different brick and frame construction
designs, each available in
three to eight different elevations.
Square footages span 1,600 to
2,500 for ranches and 1,800 to
3,000 for two-story homes. Prices
start at $239,900.
Westgate Manor offers three
to four bedrooms, two to threeand-a-half
baths, full basement,
formal dining room, vaulted, tray
or nine-foot first-floor ceilings, a
large kitchen with custom maple
cabinets, family room or great
room, and concrete driveways.
Depending on the home selected,
other standard amenities can
include a living room, den,
dinette, a tray or vaulted ceiling
in the master bedroom, as well
as dual-zoned heating and air
conditioning.
Premium standard features
included at Westgate Manor are
brick front exteriors on the first
floor, free basements in most
models, ceramic tile or hardwood
floors in the
kitchen, baths
and foyer; and
custom maple
cabinets. Kitchen
cabinets feature
solid wood
construction (no
particle board),
have solid wood
drawers with dove tail joints,
which is rare in the marketplace.
“When you build a new home
with Distinctive, you are receiving
a hand-crafted home with
custom made cabinets,” noted
Nooner. This year, Distinctive is
celebrating 32 years of building
thousands of homes throughout
the Will and south Cook County
areas.
Distinctive Home Builders, an
industry leading innovator, offers
the fastest build times (90 working
days) with a “Zero Punch List”
closing policy. Prior to closing,
each home undergoes a 100-point
checklist to insure the home
measures up to our high quality
standards.
Customers stay connected to the
progress of their home from start
to finish through Distinctive’s
unique construction portal.
Customers download the app to
stay in touch with their new home
24/7 from anywhere in the world.
The app allows customers to see
the progress of their home, access
their documents and easily share
photos and updates with family
and friends on social media.
As a semi-custom builder,
Distinctive Home Builders
can modify any of its standard
designs to cater to a customer’s
tastes, which means that moving
walls, adding extra windows or
even extending the garage are all
possible.
All homes are highly energy
efficient and are built to National
Energy Code guidelines. Every
home built has upgraded wall
and ceiling insulation values with
energy efficient windows and
high efficiency furnaces. Before
homeowners take possession of
their new home, a blower door test
is performed to verify that each
home passes a set of stringent
guidelines to insure homes are
tight and energy efficient.
“Ultimately, when you add up
all the pros of purchasing, most
owners inevitably gain more
tangible and intangible benefits
than renters do,”
Nooner. said. “It
simply makes better
financial sense to
build equity, reduce
your taxes, and
make your money
grow through
appreciation — all
while living in a
brand new home
that you can call
your own.”
Westgate Manor is conveniently
located within walking distance
of the esteemed Peotone High
School. The Westgate Manor
new home offsite Sales and
Information Center is located in
Manhattan at 24458 S. Rt. 52,
Manhattan, IL. 60422. Hours
are daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00
p.m., closed Wednesday and
Thursday and always available
by appointment. Please contact
Coyne’s camp focuses on next generation of hockey players
JONATHAN BARLAS
Editorial Intern
Although USA women’s
hockey star Kendall Coyne
is only four months removed
from her Miracle on Ice, it
seems as though more miracles
can be made in giving
back.
In her post-Olympic glory,
Coyne has strived do something
more meaningful than
just playing hockey: teaching
it to America’s next generation
of women’s hockey
players.
While the third annual
Kendall Coyne Hockey
Camp took place at Artic Ice
Arena in Orland Park, June
15-17, Coyne’s hockey experience
and expertise serves as
an inspiration to eager female
skaters.
Coyne, a Sandburg High
School graduate, has been
playing hockey for as long as
she can remember. Achieving
the highest of honors in a
sport that has predominantly
showcased its male competitors,
the Olympian persists to
break the sport’s stigma, asserting
that hockey is not just
a “man’s sport.”
“Young boys grow up
playing street hockey envisioning
themselves holding
the Stanley Cup over their
heads, but for [girls] it’s
standing locked arm in arm
with a gold medal around our
necks,” Coyne said. “A lot of
us have been put through a
lot as kids, especially people
telling us we don’t belong in
hockey because it is a ‘man’s
sport,’ but I think showcasing
to them that we were on top
of the world Feb. 23 was the
proof that we all needed.”
As Team USA suffered a
heartbreaking loss to Canada
in the 2014 Winter Olympics,
2018 bred a different story.
The United States upset Canada
3-2 in arguably one of the
greatest gold medal games to
Kendall Coyne, right, is determined to help future generations of female hockey players to
excel. JONATHAN BARLAS/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
ever grace the ice.
It was there in Pyeongchang,
South Korea,
where Coyne skated in jubilation
with her teammates,
bringing home the team’s
first taste of Olympic gold
since 1998.
Now, as those moments
forever ring throughout
sports history, Coyne attempts
to make her own mark
on aspiring hockey players
who look to do the same.
“Twenty years is a long
time between gold medals,
so to be able to win in a time
where women and girls are
being more empowered is
pretty special,” Coyne said.
“It meant everything. We
knew the kind of power that
we had if we were to come
away with a gold medal.”
Collecting 58 goals, 57 assists
and 115 points in 105
games played in her time a
part of Team USA, Coyne attributes
her success not only
to the people that introduced
her to the game but also to
those who inspired an entire
nation of girls before them.
“A lot of us started playing
because we saw the ’98
team win gold,” she said. “I
saw [1998 gold medal winner]
Cammi Granato when I
was 7 years old, and I turned
to my parents and said, ‘I
want to go to the Olympics.’
From that moment on,
she empowered me to chase
something that would change
my life forever. Along with
the support of my entire family,
nothing would have been
possible.”
As the Olympian continues
to teach the future of
women’s hockey, Coyne
explained how much more
significant running the camps
on her old stomping grounds
means to her.
“The reason why I have
the camps at the Arctic Ice
Arena is because it is where
I started to skate when I was
3 years old,” she said. “This
is where it started for me, and
look at where it’s gone. I had
always wanted to do camps
and when I was looking for
a location, I didn’t look any
further.
“I think the most important
aspect of [the camps] is to
stay accessible to these girls,
to the community and being
there to listen to them when
they need help,” Coyne said.
“I want to show that I am just
an everyday person and they
can accomplish anything
they set their minds to.”
Her success is met with
the support of her soon-tobe
husband and Sandburg
graduate, Michael Schofield
(who was a starting offensive
lineman for the 2016 Super
Bowl-winning Denver Broncos),
and the local power
couple is expected to marry
in July in Orland Park.
The Kendall Coyne Hockey
Camp has occurred at Artic
Ice Arena in Orland Park
yearly since 2015. To learn
Coyne makes a splash
as a Ninja Warrior
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Kendall Coyne had no
interest in making a splash.
But she did.
The Sandburg graduate
and Olympic gold medal
winner in women’s hockey
competed on the NBC
show “American Ninja
Warrior,” which aired June
18, and fell into the water
after her second obstacle,
the Cannonball Drop.
There were 110 competitors
at the Monument
Circle in Indianapolis for
the event and 32 were eliminated
at that stage. That
was the stage the claimed
the most victims.
She made it past the floating
steps obstacle. Only 10
out of the 110 completed
the course.
Another celebrity who
participated was IndyCar
Driver Scott Dixon.
“One of my teammates
actually recommended that
I do this,” Coyne told the
American Ninja Warrior
Nation website. “I know a
lot of my teammates have
made comments like, ‘Oh,
you’d be really good at it.’
“Men and women are
treated equally with ‘American
Ninja Warrior.’ They
compete the same obstacle
course together. I think that’s
so inspiring. I wanted to be
a part of a different group of
athletes, and I’m just so inspired
by ... seeing and hearing
the stories of the Ninjas.”
Kendall Coyne makes it past the floating steps obstacle
during the June 18 airing of ‘American Ninja Warrior’.
FOOTBALL
Thumbs up? Sandburg hopes to keep its QB healthy
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Last year, Sandburg coach Scott
Peters couldn’t wait to see how
his quarterback - Ben Starcevich -
would perform.
It turns out he got only a peek.
Starcevich injured his thumb
the second game of the season
after showing some promise in a
season-opening loss to Lyons in
which he connected with Nicky
Shelton for a 72-yard touchdown
pass and a 27-yard completion
to Shelton to help set up another
score.
The Eagles finished 3-6 against
a schedule in which seven out of
nine opponents went to the playoffs.
“At the high school level, if
you lose your starting quarterback
and rely on your backups, it’s not
easy,” Peters said.
Summer ball is in full swing
for the Eagles and they were
involved in 7-on-7 competition
at Andrew High School on
June 20 and Starcevich and his
teammates scrimmaged with
the hosts, Tinley Park, Argo and
Crete-Monee.
Sandburg lost several offensive
players from last year but tailback
Andrew Schab is slated to be back
to chomp up some yards.
Defensive stars Alex Hisrchfield
(who has an offer from Butler
on the table) and Hamza Ismail received
all-conference recognition
in the SouthWest Suburban and
are back.
The Eagles welcome tight end/
defensive end Dylan Goodsell
from Casa Grande Union High
School in Arizona.
Sandburg opens the season on
Aug. 24 and Aug. 31 with nonconference
rematches with Lyons
and Curie. Then, the Eagles dive
into a river filled with sharks when
they face Bolingbrook and Class
8A defending state champion
Lincoln-Way East. Sandburg lost
to those two teams by a combined
score of 102-21 so the road could
start out bumpy before finishing
out the season with Thornton,
Lincoln-Way West, Stagg, Lincoln-Way
Central and Homewood
-Flossmoor.
“Let’s be honest, with Bolingbrook
and Lincoln-Way East, no
one is fooling anybody, we are
realistic,” Peters said. “East is
a defending state champion and
their best player (A.J. Henning)
didn’t play against us. But that’s
the fun of high school football.
To be honest, I wouldn’t want
to be in a conference where I
knew we would have seven guaranteed
wins.”
This is going to be
an award-winning
column.
No, I won’t be winning
any awards for it. I’m going
to try to stay out of the way
as much as I can. But I am
catching up on a plethora
of local, state and national
awards won by athletes
from The Orland Park
Prairie and Tinley Junction
areas:
• Illinois Water Polo
named two Sandburg athletes
to its all-state teams at
a recent dinner in Elmhurst.
Tara Maher made the allstate
first team for the girls
while Joey Jenkot made the
second team for the boys.
Both athletes have recently
graduated and were threeyear
varsity starters. Maher
plans on going to Moraine
Valley Community College
in the fall while Jenkot is
headed to Marquette.
Mother McAuley’s Jill
Schultz, a Tinley Park
resident, was named to the
first team and her freshman
sister, Maddie, was named
to the second team. Maddie
is one of three freshman
out of 41 athletes to be
honored.
• Hang on, we’re not done
with Maher, yet, She was
named Sandburg’s female
Athlete of the Year award
for her swimming and water
polo accomplishments. She
is a two-time state qualifier
in swimming and is just the
second athlete in school history
to score 100 goals in a
water polo season.
Track and cross country
star Dylan Jacobs won the
male Athlete of the Year
honor after capping off a
tremendous career by winning
the 1,600-meter Class
3A state championship in
May. In the fall, he was
named Gatorade Illinois
Cross Country Runner of
the Year.
• Tinley Park High
School softball star Kristin
Kavalauskas won the
coolest-sounding award -
the Semper Fidelis Player of
the Year, sponsored by the
Marines and MaxPreps.
Titans coach Wendy
Podbielniak said it is a
regional award for softball
and is happy for the Lewis
University-bound Kavalauskas.
“Kristin has worked her
butt off both academically
and athletically,” the coach
said. “There is no offseason
for this kid.
“Besides her amazing
ability on the field she is the
real deal as a human being
- one of the best people I
have ever met, coaching or
teaching.
“Great things are coming
to Kristin Kavalauskas
because she will earn greatness.”
• So what new award has
Orland Park’s Matt McCormick
won lately?
After winning a pair of
Illinois Player of the Year
awards from Gatorade and
Prep Baseball Report he
was named to the Collegiate
Baseball Newspapers All-
American first team.
McCormick also was
named first-team all-state
by the Illinois High School
Baseball Coaches Association.
He received notice from
MLB Pipeline writer Jonathan
Mayo as one of the top
20 players in the Tournament
of Stars event, which
featured scouts from major
league teams in attendance
and McCormick put on a
show.
• Sandburg infielder
Brandon Comia and catcher
Ryan Hampe earned Collegiate
Baseball Newspaper’s
All-American honors as
they were both named to the
second team. Twenty-eight
of the players honored were
selected in the first three
rounds of the Major League
Baseball draft held earlier
this month.
• Also making the
IHSBCA team were Comia,
Hampe and Andrew infielder
Jake Plastiak, a recent
San Diego Padres draftee.
Sandburg’s Joey Jenkot and Tara Maher earned state
honors in water polo. PHOTO SUBMITTED
• United Soccer Coaches
named Andrew senior-to-be
Megan Nemec to the All-
Midwest team.
• The Andrew lacrosse
team, which features
athletes from Andrew,
Sandburg and Stagg, placed
Mark Teschke, Chris
Houchine, Nick Redman
and Danny Slater on the
South Suburban section of
the Illinois High School
Lacrosse Association team.
• Sandburg softball player
Ashley Wood was named
to the Illinois Coaches Association
Class 4A team.
Andrew’s Ella LeMonier
and Kaitlin Tholl made the
second team while T-Bolt
Kaitlin Lynch was a thirdteam
member.
LISTEN UP
“Young boys grow up playing street hockey
envisioning themselves holding the Stanley Cup over
their heads, but for [girls] it’s standing locked arm in
arm with a gold medal around our necks.”
Kendall Coyne - Olympic gold medal hockey player
What 2 Watch
Softball, Monday, July 2, TBA
• Pool play begins in the Orland Park Lightning
Fourth of July Fast Pitch Tournament at
diamonds throughout the village. It will run
