Mesquite Exhibit Hall
Welcome!
Welcome to the new Self-Reliance EXPERIENCE...we are so thrilled and honored to have you join us!
This is the 9th year of the Self Reliance Expo. At the end of 2017, we purchased the Expo from its
founder and today we couldn't be more excited about the giant vision we have for this organization!
We have restructured the organization and are pleased to introduce The National Self-Reliance
Project, the umbrella organization over the new Self-Reliance EXPERIENCE (our flagship initiative).
Additional initiatives will be unveiled over the coming months. We are positioning this organization
to bring a greater awareness to the importance of a self-reliant lifestyle in our everyday lives and
communities.
Our platform is neutral, with no political or religious affiliation. We firmly believe that in an effort to
strengthen our communities, families and ourselves, we must all make a conscious choice to become
more prepared for whatever life throws our way, irrespective of who's in office or behind the pulpit.
The mission of The National Self-Reliance Project is to educate and empower our citizens, families
and communities to become more self-reliant. This then begs the question, "What does selfreliance
mean?" It is our goal is to initiate that conversation in homes across the dinner table and in
communities throughout the United States. Self-reliance will look different depending upon where
you live, who you care for and the strength of your community. For the Self-Reliance EXPERIENCE, we
define self-reliance with four 'pillars': PREPAREDNESS, SURVIVAL, SUSTAINABILITY and the SIMPLE
LIFE (aka homesteading, etc). It is our hope that one of those will resonate with you and along your
journey, you will begin to see a common thread thru each of the four pillars, thus becoming even more
educated and empowered to pursue a holistic self-reliant lifestyle.
Once again, we thank you for joining us and wish you an amazing EXPERIENCE! Please join the
conversation at #SelfRelianceMeans.
Cheers.
10 Steps to a
Healthy Home!
Many of our health problems can be traced back to our
indoor air environment. We spend a lot of time indoors
and our children spend more time indoors than any
other generation. Our lifestyles now incorporate new
electronic devices and we are using chemically based
medicines to mask our symptoms of disease. One of the
easiest things you can do is to educate yourself on what
might be the cause of your present and future pains.
Many of these suggestions are low cost. If you start
working on them now your family will feel better.
Medical Wishes?
Suppose you became unconscious, were taken to a
hospital and medical decisions needed to be made, but
you are unable to make them? Who would know what
you would want or not want? Suppose it’s an elderly
parent or grandparent who fell ill. Do you know their
treatment wishes? Would you be able to make a life-anddeath
decision for them? Good planning and preparation
are essential in matters of your health and those of your
loved ones.
All 50 U.S. states guarantee the right of adults to choose
someone to make these decisions, and all 50 states
provide “advance directive” documents for this purpose.
Unfortunately, many of these forms are written by
doctors and lawyers and you just about have to be one
or the other to complete them. In 1998, a new way to
plan was introduced – Five Wishes.
Five Wishes is an easy to understand and use advance
directive, which consists of a durable power of attorney
for health care (Wish 1) and a living will (Wish 2). In
Wish 1 you choose someone to make healthcare
decisions for you when you can’t make them yourself,
and in Wish 2 you give that person guidance on
what kind of life support treatment you would want
or not want. Wishes 3-5 are what make Five Wishes
unique in that they address questions of your comfort,
maintaining your dignity and the many other personal,
family and spiritual concerns that people say matter
most. There are more than 30 million copies of Five
Wishes in national circulation and it is available in
29 languages and in Braille. It fully meets the legal
requirements of 42 states, but it’s used in all 50 to help
people discuss and plan ahead of a serious illness.
Completing Five Wishes is a gift, both to yourself and
to those you love. In spelling out your wishes, family
members need no longer guess, because everybody’s
on the same page! Individual copies of Five Wishes are
$5 each, but only $1 each in quantities of 25 or more.
Does the Definition
Self-Reliance
Matter?
What is Self-Reliance?
Is it the ability to feed your family real, healthy,
non-processed food from your own garden? Is it
about avoiding the “normal” industrialized food
production and processing channels? Or is it
about feeding your family when the grocery store
shelves are emptied after a dangerous storm?
Is it about warming your family in the winter
without paying ever increasing rates to utility
corporations? Is it about protecting the
environment from pollution caused by fossil
fuels? Or is it about running your air conditioner
and television while the power is out, and the
utilities are scrambling to repair a damaged grid?
Is it about healing basic ailments the all-natural
way, without paying exorbitant doctor bills or
insurance deductibles?
Is it about never having to stand in line for
handouts at a Red Cross shelter? Or is it about
never having to wait for FEMA?
Is it about self-defense?
Our soil-less, weed-free growing system creates
high-producing raised beds for master gardeners and
beginners alike. Harvest 4 to 5 times more produce
per square foot with our organic planting mix, special
trace mineral elements (organic fertilizer) in our
raised beds system.
Foraging in Texas
The Southwest is a land of plenty, the resources are
rich and whether used for agriculture or left as pristine
wilderness, the land provides.
Ask most anyone around the countryside and they'll be
able to tell you where the best fishing is, when hunting
season starts and what crops are planted locally. Many, if not
most of us love the land, and have grown up learning and
enjoying the outdoors.
But, what if there was more out there? Things that have
always been around, things you've looked at but hadn't
realized what they truly were?
A landscape of delicious edible fruits, nuts, vegetables
and tubers blanket our countryside. Given a second
glance and closer look, food and uniquely useful plant life,
surrounds us more than folks might imagine.
When looking for off
grid land or a place for
your family to be able
to go to in the event of
a catastrophic event,
price and location often
play an important role.
Something that most
people overlook during
this process is the
value, and necessity,
in using open source
intelligence to get a full
picture of the area and
possible threats that
they are potentially
going to be near. Open
source intelligence is an
overlooked tool that can
give you a large amount
of information that may
influence your decision.
We have put together
some quick hitters to
get you pointed in the
right direction.
Five Open Source
intelligence Tasks to do before
going off grid
1. Check the crime statistics in the area
Many people are VERY surprised to find out that there
are issues in the area they are looking in. It may be a
great place, but if there are numerous drug arrests and
assaults nearby, then that may influence your decision.
Just because you think you are buying in the middle
of nowhere does not mean that bad things are not
happening there. Google Keyword: Check my local
crime statistics
2. Background check on previous owner
While this may sound over the top, it could give you
some good background information. If the owner is nice
to you, it does not mean that they are not a drug dealer
or affiliated with a gang, or may have done jail time. This
could signal any number of issues with the property.
Google Keyword: Personal Background Check – 99% of
the time this will cost you money, but there are certain
things you can do on your own. Make sure to check out
our open source intelligence speaker in Mesquite!
3. Check to make sure there are no liens on the property
The last thing you need is an issue with this. There is
nothing worse than getting to closing and finding out
that the previous owners had undisclosed issues. Make
sure and ask the right questions prior to purchase!
Google Keyword: public check for property liens
4. Check public records for sex offenders
Sex offenders are required to register with the State
and local law enforcement when they settle back into a
community. Habitual and violent offenders could pose
an issue in the right situations. Google Keyword: public
check for sex offenders
5. Proximity to law enforcement & medical response
If you are off grid, this should be a real priority. Check
distances, capabilities, equipment, routes, etc. Are they
volunteers or professional paid individuals? Search
Police, Fire, EMS, if rural add volunteer to that. Google
Keyword: Just use Google maps online or use Google
Earth.
TONY ANDRIC
All My Bees Inc.
Beginning with Chickens and Bees Class
My name is Tony Andric, I am an addict and I love it. For many beekeepers, this
is how we should introduce ourselves. With a career in engineering I’ve always
looked to improve the tools and equipment I use. I worked for over 20 years at
companies like IBM and AMD making computer equipment used worldwide and
getting several patents. In 2011 I left the corporate world and started a partnership
building an automatic chicken coop door (chickendoors.com). That business has
been blessed with success. This past year I’ve started another business serving the
beekeeping market. I live in Lockhart, Texas with my bride of over 20 years. We
enjoy the countryside lifestyle surrounded by cows, chickens, bees and dogs.
BEGINNING WITH CHICKENS & BEES
10:30am-11:30pm Saturday
Simple Life Stage
A key part of self-reliance is providing your
own food. Raising chickens is one of the easiest
animals to start learning animal husbandry.
Chickens need very little space. This presentation
will walk through the basics of keeping chickens
and bees. From the needs of starting chicks,
through caring for adult hens will be discussed.
Simple ways of building a coop, diseases to avoid
or treat, and common mistakes to avoid will be
discussed. Keeping hens have several rewards.
Fresh free-range eggs will change your view of
what an egg really is. The taste of true free-range
meat will make you wonder what is being sold
in grocery stores. Beekeeping is the greatest
addiction you will ever have. Bees can double
your garden’s output. Honey can replace sugar
and help wounds heal and helps with allergies
and chemical-free honey can be quite profitable.
And bees can do well even in a small back yard.
10:45am-12:00pm Saturday
Taught by Mark Budro, you will get an overview
of what is available for you and your family so
you can begin to make informed decision for
your communications plan. It is very important
to figure out now what works for you and your
family for communications. Now is the time to
test them, and learn how to use them. All the
best laid plans in an emergency situation will
be useless without effective communications
between you and your group/family.
The food sold in grocery stores and restaurants now
is essentially toxic to the human body, and devoid of
nutrition. So even if collapse were not an issue, growing
your own food supply is essential to health in these times.
Rich soil full of minerals and life is vital for growing food.
It is extremely difficult to grow food without good soil
and the necessary nutrients. Your own urine contains
much of the most important nutrient – nitrogen. Stocking
up on minerals such as Azomite (a clay powder that
contains 64 trace minerals) or seaweed is advisable.
Water is vital. It takes the equivalent of 1 inch of rain
per week to grow most of the common fruits and
vegetables. You can collect 0.6 gallons of water per sq.
ft. from a rooftop with a 1” rain. Start setting up tanks,
swales, or catchment ponds. There are techniques for
more arid regions – if you live in an arid region, start
learning now.
growing your own food is like printing
Your own money
Years of research, and dozens of interviews of survivors
of collapse situations (civil wars, economic collapse,
epidemics, hyper-inflation, etc.) shows that the ability
to produce food is the most valuable skill you can have
to survive.
Start your food producing in small ways. The
tendency is to try and do it all at once, which can be
overwhelming. A 100 sq.ft. garden, a flock of 6 chickens,
or a rabbitry with 1 buck and 3 does is enough to
produce ½ of your own food in a backyard sized space
in less than an hour per day. Go to www.growhalf.com
for a step by step program on how to do this.
Leaving Work After a
natural disaster
A natural disaster may cause you to go from employee
to survivalist. In the Changing Earth Series, Erika
did just that. Stranded from her vehicle, she utilizes
situational awareness to stay safe. The landscape was
very different from the one she left behind. Never
expecting to return home on foot, her gear was limited.
Work sometimes requires us to wear dress shoes that
won’t work for long hikes. Carry a comfortable pair of
rugged shoes as a backup.
Erika also needed adequate shelter, including clothing.
Carrying an emergency poncho is a low-profile way to
make sure you always have shelter.
Erika carried water as you will have to. Always have
some bottles around but a personal water filter will
ensure your supply.
Self defense was an absolute necessity in my story.
Carry a sturdy knife for self-defense as well as
practical uses, you might not able to carry a firearm.
Erika got hungry along the way. I recommend
researching what you can eat in your environment
but a little trail mix or a pack of protein bars goes a
long way.
Unable to communicate Erika journeyed alone but
that may not be the case for you. Making sure your
cell phone is charged requires a back-up battery and
making sure it can get signal is as easy as purchasing
a range extender.
Erika and her family never planned for the worst
and didn’t have a family meeting plan. The plan
is essential to make sure your family stays safe
following a disaster. Always have a plan B and a way
of communicating to all members that you have
moved on to the alternate location.
Learning from Erika’s experience will help keep you
safe when you must leave work following a natural
disaster.
