Street Truck 

REVOLUTION 

It seems like only yesterday that 

mini trucks were all the rage. Sure, 

they’re still roaming around the 

southern United States and West Coast 

in limited numbers, but the scene just 

isn’t what it used to be. “I remember 

the rivalry between the Chevy 454 SS 

and Ford F150 Lightning in the early 

2000s—the only production street 

performance trucks on the market,” 

commented Billy Longfellow, VP of 

Design and Engineering at Air Design 

USA and a longtime admirer of the 

mini-truck platform. 

But let’s call a spade a spade—sometimes 

it’s hard not to look back at the height of the 

movement and laugh out loud a bit at the 

crazy hot rod concoctions. After all, what 

would possess anyone to take a perfectly 

fine pickup truck and chop it, drop it, and 

paint it with an outlandish paint scheme? 

The square-pegs-in-the-round-holes of 

the world who see it as a blank canvas, 

that’s who. And mini trucks, well, they 

represent the most important aspect of the 

automotive world—having fun.

At the surface, these trucks resemble 

many other pickups that have been 

lowered to the ground, but take a closer 

look at the suspension to appreciate 

the serious amount of work that gets 

them there. Mini trucking is for those 

who not only dare to think outside 

the box, but also crave elevating the 

engineering capabilities to new levels, 

all for the sake of showin’ off and having 

some fun. Now, don’t dismiss them 

as a gearhead’s playground—they 

deserve serious street cred when done 

right. It’s just that, traditionally, mini 

truckers have been less concerned with 

serious performance or mastering crazy 

obstacles, thus not always receiving 

the respect they deserve. The scene is 

more about pushing the limits, simply 

because you can, and then having a 

social platform available to display 

such an accomplishment. Wild paint 

schemes or funky interiors are a public 

declaration of the mini-truck following 

at large. Yearning to be unique and stand 

out in a crowd hasn’t changed, but the 

means by which we do so absolutely has. 

21st Century Street Truck 

Performance 

Gearheads have been building 

performance trucks for as long as they’ve 

been crafting performance cars. If you 

were to take an American muscle classic 

and the same brand pickup truck from 

the exact same year, you’d probably 

notice a few similarities in the drivetrain. 

You’re not going to snag a D100 with a 

426 Hemi jammed under the hood from 

the factory, but there’s no reason a true 

hot rodder couldn’t reengineer one to fit 

at will. 

Remember in 1978 when Dodge debuted 

the 360 powered Lil’ Red Express, which 

Car and Driver dubbed the fastest 

American production vehicle in their 

0-100 test? It’s that kind of mentality 

that’s helped bring the street truck 

back to life, returning to the scene with 

vengeance and something to prove. 

Modern mini trucking has its roots firmly 

planted in the 90s, but now it’s poised 

to stand up to the competition across 

various categories of performance.

“The technology has come so far. To be 

able to take a truck and dial it down 

with coilovers like Steeda would 

a Mustang…man, it’s just going 

to blow people away,” added 

Longfellow. “You can really create 

the ultimate street performance 

truck with today’s technology, 

suspension, superchargers, 

turbos, rims, and tires,” he 

added. 

Case in point, Rutledge 

Wood designed a mini truck 

that, once complete, had him 

sitting front and center at the 

revived scene. In 2007, Toyota 

put together a TRD Tundra to 

showcase at the 2008 SEMA 

show. Its first debut showcased 

TRD performance in the midst of 

the rising 4x4 trend that would take 

the market by storm. After Wood 

got his hands on it, he turned it into 

a street machine for the 2016 Hot Rod 

Power Tour. He lowered it, fitted it with 

a wide body kit, and painted it a shade 

of yellow so sweet that you could almost 

taste it. Wood brought his evil-twin 

Camaros along for the ride. During the 

VLOG, everyone walked right past the 

Camaros to talk about the Tundra that 

Wood dubbed Fundra. 

Similarly, Roadkill’s David Freiburger’s 

Muscle Truck has caught a lot of 

attention since its first appearance back 

in 2009. Originally put together for a road 

trip, it was a low-buck build in its fullest 

glory. As time would tell, though, it would 

return in a 2013 Roadkill episode. Right 

around the same time, Freiburger shared 

in Hot Rod Magazine, “Remember when 

we road-tripped our LS6-powered 1974 

Chevy Stepside in the June ’09 issue? The 

beater pickup proved hugely popular, 

and now we’ve got it back on the road 

and the dragstrip.” After this, the truck 

continued to grow in popularity and in 

2017, the Motor Trend YouTube channel 

released a video where David Freiburger 

mentioned that the Muscle Truck is still 

the most asked about vehicle they’ve 

featured on the Roadkill web series. 

1973 

Datsun 

620, was 

then paired with a 

SR20DET Nissan engine, 

and saw numerous modifications to 

the suspension, body, and chassis 

(including parts from a wheel 

barrow)—all in the name of building a 

performance drift machine. Hooniverse 

recognized just how intense this project 

was and stated, “Chad Copeland’s 

Datsun 620 is the perfect vehicle to 

take the title of Hooniversal Car of the 

Year 2010 because it’s so unexpected.

stonking engine, to compete on the 

track with other Nissans, Toyotas, and 

the odd BMW. The amount of backyard 

engineering to create this monster is 

nothing short of amazing…” 

And that kind of ingenuity is exactly 

where the modern movement is heading. 

Fast forward to the 2017 SEMA Show, 

where Longfellow of Air Design USA was 

commissioned by Ford to orchestrate 

a silver bullet duo that would wow 

a record-breaking attendance like 

never before. Months later, the awardwinning 

2018 Ford Mustang and 2018 

Ford F-150 were major successes at the 

LA and Detroit Auto Shows and gracing 

magazines everywhere. But there’s 

another subtle accomplishment that 

has admirers whispering. Longfellow 

used these high-profile builds to launch 

the company’s Street Series design…on 

a full-size pickup. 

“When everyone goes right, we go left. 

Air Design USA is starting a Street Truck 

Revolution. And when everyone goes 

up, we go down. If you design and build 

it right, the market will follow,” said 

Longfellow. “Manufacturers have invested 

in both mid-size and full-size trucks. So, 

when next year’s Ford Ranger comes out, 

the market will only get more excited—the 

time is right for Air Design USA to launch 

its new Street Series kit,” he added. 

You see, the vehicle platforms, individual 

tastes, brands, and products may have 

evolved, but our thirst to be different is 

stronger than ever in a sea of sameness. 

Arguably, contemporary truck styling 

hasn’t veered too far left of center 

since the mini-truck era. It’s time for a 

modern street-truck revolution that pays 

homage to the fine lines of dropping low. 

Companies like Air Design USA are 

bringing street performance styling back 

to the pavement, and well-respected 

brands like Belltech are using 30 years 

of suspension experience to refine a 

modern mini-truck movement.

10 of the Wildest, Wackiest, and WORST 

Mini-Truck Builds 

RoadKill’s Mazdarati 

You couldn’t have a list that features 

some of the wackiest builds in the 

automotive world without talking about 

Roadkill. The Mazdarati is a Mazda 

pickup fitted with an Oldsmobile 455. 

Of course, the engine was mounted in 

the bed of the truck and customized with 

boat headers. The truck wasn’t built by 

David Freiburger or Mike Finnegan, 

rather something they purchased asis 

for the Optima Ultimate Street Car 

Competition. But that doesn’t mean the 

vehicle went untouched. They visited 

Westech Performance to squeeze 

every ounce of power they could out 

of the Oldsmobile power plant and as 

Freiburger pointed out, the radiator 

was positioned just behind the cab of the 

truck where no air could reach it. Their 

solution? Fitting air vents to the roof. 

There’s no denying the ridiculousness 

of this mini truck. 

Diesel Powered 

1986 Suzuki Samurai 

The Suzuki Samurai in stock form is on 

the short list of dangerous vehicles from 

the 1980s. They’re known for tipping 

over, as mentioned in The Engine Block 

feature Easter Jeep Safari: Off Beat 

Off-Road at MOAB. How do you solve 

this problem? First, by slamming it, of 

course. But why stop there? David Taylor 

sure didn’t. In fact, he took his 1986 

Samurai and did all sorts of custom work 

to it, including dropping in a 3.9L 4BT 

Cummins engine in the bay of a Samurai 

on an S10 Chassis. 

2001 Isuzu Mini Semi 

Mini and Semi are two words that are far 

from synonymous. An S10, or something 

of that nature, probably comes to mind 

when thinking about a mini truck. 

Similarly, an Isuzu NPR is unlikely to 

resemble a Semi…or is it? Gabriel Culp

embarked on the ultimate conquest 

when he was dreaming up the ultimate 

work truck. He already had an F-150, 

so naturally he needed to break the 

norm. The result? The most beautifully 

whacked-out crossbreed between mini 

trucking and hauling. After a serious 

over-haul, the Mini Semi NPR was born. 

1963 International Travelette 

If someone isn’t forced to ask, “What is 

it?” then can it really be labeled unique? 

Here we find yet another hauler on our 

mini-truck list. Only this time we find a 

Cummins diesel engine doing the job. 

This truck was put together by Rob 

Vanluik for carting around the family 

on all sorts of adventures. Not only is it 

beefed up underneath, but it looks like a 

half-sized hauler from the 1960s. When 

you combine innovation, work ethic, 

and a traveling Canadian, you wind up 

with what is likely the craziest mini truck 

we’ve ever seen. 

Half Dead’s 1990 

Toyota Pickup 

The mini truck world is one of many 

unique trends and styles. One of the 

most notable is the outlandish paint 

jobs. Richard “Half Dead” Knipp put 

together a 1990 Toyota pickup that 

certainly takes the cake for one of the 

most distinguished styles we’ve ever 

seen. The interior is dressed with custom 

horror-inspired décor. The exterior 

showcases a paint job that consists of 

over 31 colors. A crazed artist, but we 

certainly applaud the gruesome design. 

All Eyes on Jimmy 

In the spirit of bleeding eyes, we must 

look at Derrick Shelton’s 1989 GMC 

Jimmy. This bright yellow SUV is 

slammed to the ground and sports 

some pretty trick wheels. With a paint 

job reminiscent of the glorious 1990s, 

people can’t help but do a double take at 

this ride. Notice the eyes poking out of 

the hood. They belong to a small block 

stroker ready to whip that grin right off 

your face. 

Jennifer Reynolds 

1998 Nissan Frontier 

Jennifer Reynolds slapped together this 

purple-people-eating machine with her 

husband after a life spent sharing the 

same passion. This build features the 

front suspension of a 1986 Toyota, the

ear end of a 2003 Silverado fitted with a 

track bar and a 2-link set-up. All of that 

is wrapped up into the body of a 1998 

Frontier, which bears a bright purple 

paint scheme and a 90s graphic that’ll 

keep your attention for a long, long time. 

Mini-Rat 

There’s nothing cooler than bringing 

two trends together to form one 

unbelievable ride. The problem is 

finding two that go well together. Justin 

Haas hit the drawing boards with a 

vision of something part rat-rod and part 

mini truck. Within time, he whipped up 

a delicious recipe for his tired 1982 S10. 

Between the Jeep front end and the army 

green paint job riding on the chassis, this 

thing has mini-rat truck written all over 

it, especially on the keg. 

1970 Flxible Bus 

Mini truckin’ with your best buds is what 

it’s all about. So, what’s the best carpool 

plan to bring all your pals out for the 

next big event? Obviously, you pile them 

into a bus, right? But an ordinary bus 

just won’t do—it has to be mini-trucked 

out. And that’s exactly what the guys 

at Go-EZ Inc. were thinking when they 

bagged their 1970 Flxible Bus. It’s not 

mini and it’s far from small, but we’ve 

got to tip our hats in recognition to the 

raised eyebrows it elicited from us. 

Chad Copeland’s 

1973 Datsun Drift Truck 

The mini-truck craze may have hit a low 

point, but it’s not dead. Take a look at Chad 

Copeland’s 1973 Datsun 620. This truck 

has been heavily modified from front to 

back in the name of serious performance. 

The engine is a Nissan SR20DET, its rear 

suspension is all out, and the transmission 

tunnel utilizes the body of a wheel barrow. 

It may have been crowned the Hooniversal 

Car of the Year back in 2010, but it’s still 

certainly the wildest performance mini 

truck around.

Don’t forget what’s under the hood... 

The winter is as hard on automobiles as osteoporosis is on joints. There’s nothing 

like closing the lid on a particularly miserable season, especially with a good oldfashioned

sorting through junk in the attic, we know that you have priorities straight—the

It’s no secret that the gasoline you 

pump from the local station is 

packed with all sorts of additives and 

chemicals. Yes, they’re meant to clean 

the engine during operation. But the fact 

remains that when new gas sits around, you 

wind up with a bunch of unwanted debris and 

deposits in the tank--and even the engine. 

Naturally, carbon builds up on the internal 

parts as gasoline burns so drivers should be 

reminded to clear these out. It might not 

seem like a big deal on a fresh engine, but 

these deposits only attract more build up. If

Maintenance aside, let’s talk true 

performance. After the engine has 

been serviced, it’s time for fuel 

additives, substitutes, stabilizers, and maybe 

even octane boosters. Does the brand Race 

Gas ring a bell? Well, it should. When you 

blend their product to the proper ratio, 

“RACE GAS can take your ordinary pump 

gasoline and transform it into high octane, 

high energy, track grade racing fuel,” said 

the company. In fact, only two ounces of

Programmers are something of a 

universal answer for enhancing 

the characteristics of modern 

vehicles. They are useful in improving 

fuel economy, horsepower, towing 

capabilities, and even allowing drivers 

to tap into the onboard computer for 

complex diagnostics and adjustments. 

The nuts and bolts? A programmer 

accesses the ECU of the car and 

manipulates mapping of the fuel and 

timing to enhance the power curve. 

This offers the ability to switch from an 

economy tune to a performance tune. 

Additionally, programmers work to 

enhance shift points of the transmission 

and can even be used to recalibrate the 

speedometer (with the right model). 

However, a tuner’s ultimate job is to get 

man in touch with the engine. When 

carbs and distributors disappeared, 

the gap between driver and machine 

widened. Suddenly, the car is solving 

its own problems and adjusting 

itself on the fly. With a good tuner, 

consumers find themselves able to

tap into the knowledge of a powerful 

computer to help strengthen the 

characteristics craved most when 

driving. And really, it reinforces the 

bond between man and machine—that’s 

what this industry is all about, right? 

As a shop owner, focus on stocking the 

best of the best and knowing the product 

inside and out. Marketing Coordinator 

Kris Lavery has a rule of three that 

comes in handy here. “There are three 

keys, in my opinion, to increasing 

your average sale and building a loyal 

clientele that becomes your most 

effective form of advertising: know 

your product, know your customer, 

and have good/better/best options… 

but ALWAYS show them the best first!”

Despite proven results, there’s a lot 

of controversy surrounding computer 

programmers, and consumers are 

often misinformed. For years, people 

have been led to believe that tuners 

automatically void a vehicle’s factory 

warranty upon installation. In actuality, 

though the idea may hold some water, it 

isn’t completely true. Superchips, a longtime 

and trusted supplier of computer 

programmers, addressed this issue right 

on their website, stating that “consumers 

of aftermarket products are protected by 

the Federal Magnusson-Moss Warranty 

Act. The Act provides if something 

breaks on your vehicle and you take it 

in for warranty repair, the dealer must 

honor your warranty unless whatever 

modifications you have added to your 

vehicle directly caused the problem 

in question.” So, in other words, if you 

have a problem that isn’t directly linked 

to the programmer, then a warranty 

should be honored. If, however, the

programmer is linked to the issue at 

hand, then sorry Bubba—that’s on 

you. Technically speaking, they don’t 

void the warranty, rather the warranty 

just doesn’t apply to aftermarket parts. 

As if tuners haven’t been through the 

ringer enough, “A lot of the newer 

vehicles are set up in such a way 

that it makes it harder to get large 

performance/torque gains out of them 

like they used to. Also, the EPA rules 

have really hurt the overall industry 

because people are trying to get 

programmers (for diesels mainly), so 

they can remove the DPF filters and/ 

or install EGR delete kits and then 

program the computer around these 

changes; however, the EPA has made 

those delete systems illegal and have 

sued the programmer companies,” 

said Gahre Scudder, a Keystone sales 

team lead based out of North Carolina. 

It may be a tense tug of war these days, 

but the tuner biz is far from dried up. 

Offering tuner brands means that shop 

owners need to rise above product 

awareness and have a vested interest 

in educating consumers about the 

fact–and fiction associated with the 

purchase. Taking the extra time to help 

them wade through the regulatory 

muck likely will result in more than 

a one-time sale, landing you a loyal 

repeat customer.

100 Years of 

CHEVY TRUCKS 

This year marks 100 years since 

Chevrolet built its first pickup truck. 

General Motors, Chevy’s parent 

company, is touting its 2018 Silverado as 

the result of 100 years of learning, adapting, 

and improving. And few could argue against 

GM’s credibility. 

Chevy began building its tough work 

machines in 1918, with its One-Ton or “Ton- 

Truck” pickup. Based on a delivery-car 

version of the Chevrolet Series 490 (Chevy’s 

version of Ford’s Model T), the One-Ton was 

built to compete with Ford’s TT pickup. It was 

motivated by a 2.8-liter inline four-cylinder 

engine that made less than 40 horsepower. 

Oh, how far we’ve come! Early versions even 

had removable tops that effectively made 

them convertible pickup trucks. 

Chevrolet evolved these modest hauling 

machines, becoming the Chevrolet Superior 

platform in 1923, the Chevrolet Series AA 

Capitol in 1927, and the Chevrolet Eagle 

platform in 1933, with different variations 

of these titles made through the years in 

between. The 1929 model year trucks were 

the first to get inline six-cylinder engines. 

The changes made through this period were 

mostly equipment updates so as to stay 

competitive in the marketplace. Additionally, 

pricing changes were executed to keep 

business throughout the Great Depression, 

which lasted from 1929 until 1939. Full-size 

trucks built on the Chevrolet Master platform 

of 1933-1942 would be the last to directly 

share a chassis with Chevy passenger cars. 

By this point, Chevy trucks had inline-six 

engines making a whopping 80 horsepower. 

The first dedicated Chevrolet truck line 

debuted in 1941 as the AK Series. While this 

platform was created for trucks, it did share 

similarities with the GM A-car platform of 

that era. The AK platform was more versatile, 

however, as it could be used to underpin 

simple pickup applications all the way to fullsize 

buses. This generation of trucks was also 

pressed into service during World War II, and 

they remained in production through 1946. 

The modern era of Chevy trucks began 

post WWII, with the introduction of the 

Chevrolet Advance Design truck platform 

in 1947. Designed to be bigger, stronger, 

and more beautiful than the AK-generation 

machines, Chevy dubbed them “the trucks 

of a thousand uses.” The 3100-series truck of 

this era, best known for its five-bar horizontal 

grille, remains an iconic-styled truck to this 

day. Consumers responded to these attractive 

new machines, as they were the best-selling 

trucks in America from 1947 until 1955. 

For 1955, Chevy introduced its “Task Force” 

truck platform, which further built upon 

adding more comfort features and appealing 

styling than the previous generation. The 

1955 trucks were also the first ever to have 

V8 engines, getting a 154-hp 265 cubic inch 

(4.3-liter) version of GM’s now legendary 

Small Block Chevy. It was also the first

generation of Chevy truck to get a 12-volt 

electrical system. 

The first Chevy C/K truck platform (of 

which there would be four generations) was 

introduced in 1960. This generation was the 

first to get a drop-center ladder frame and an 

independent front suspension (on two-wheeldrive 

versions), which resulted in a more carlike 

ride. These trucks had engine options 

ranging from 135-horsepower inline sixes to 

220-horsepower V8s. The second generation 

“Action Line” C/K debuted in 1967. Most (but 

not all) iterations of these new trucks got coilspring 

trailing arm rear suspensions, which 

further improved ride quality. And power 

ranged from 150-hp from a straight six, to a 240- 

hp 402 cubic-inch (6.6-liter) Big Block Chevy. 

For 1973, the third generation C/K, also 

known as the “Square Body” or “Box Body” 

was launched. These trucks were designed 

on a clean sheet of paper and featured 

upgraded items like a stronger chassis, locking 

differentials, and more convenience items 

(power windows, power locks, etc.), but power 

output remained roughly the same. The fourthgen 

C/K debuted in 1988 and continued to 

offer more comfort and convenience features. 

There was also a “muscle car” version know as 

the 454SS that got a 230 horsepower/385 lb-ft 

454 cubic inch (7.4-liter) Big Block Chevy V8. 

The C/K went out of production after 1998. 

In 1999, the Silverado name (which had 

previously been applied to trim lines) replaced 

C/K on Chevy’s full-size pickups. Ascribed the 

“Like a Rock” tagline, the new trucks featured 

hydroformed frames and a new selection of 

Vortec V8 engines. A very limited production 

hybrid version was also produced and sold to 

a limited number of consumers. Power ranged 

from 200 to 345 horsepower. In 2007, the 

second-gen Silverado went into production. 

It improved upon the previous generation in 

terms of power, technology, and comfort. A 

hybrid version of these trucks was available 

for sale to customers in all U.S. markets. The 

third-gen Silverado of 2014 to 2018 moved the 

bar forward even more, offering features like 

internet and smartphone connectivity, and 

power (285 to 445 horsepower) that would 

have been practically unbelievable to Chevy 

engineers of the past. A fourth-gen Silverado 

will begin production as a 2019 model. 

Throughout the years there were also smaller 

trucks and even car-based Chevy pickups. 

The Colorados of today are among the bestselling 

non-full-size pickups ever. Similarly, 

the compact S-10 Chevy trucks of the 1980s 

and 1990s were highly sought after in their day. 

The light-duty Chevy LUV pickup of the 1970s 

still has an enthusiastic following. And the 

car-based Chevy El Camino (produced from 

1959–1960 and 1964–1987) bridged the gap 

between pickup and muscle car. 

But the full-size Chevy trucks are the kings of 

GM’s vehicle production. To date, Chevy has sold 

more than 85 million pickups. For perspective, 

the best-selling car of all time, the Toyota Corolla, 

has sold just over 40 million copies.

Cheney Tire’s Nasty North Builds 

a One-Off Silverado Worthy of a Salute 

Fair Warning: If you’re not into 

things like multi-generational 

family success via hard work, badass 

lifted trucks, or the honest-to-goodness 

American heroes that love them, this may 

not be the story for you. The Kardashians 

welcomed some new babies recently. 

There’s a video of a rat taking a shower 

that’s all over the internet. Fitness bloggers 

believe that cauliflower is the new kale. 

Maybe go seek out some of that... 

A Family Affair 

Still here? Good. Cheney Tire has been a 

staple business in Watertown, New York 

since the 1940s. Tom Cheney’s father 

started running a gas station in 1949 in 

upstate New York and in 1954, he moved 

(just a little ways up the road) to open 

a two-bay Gulf station. In the decades 

that followed, Tom and his brother 

have gradually expanded their father’s 

business into a local aftermarket empire. 

Today, Cheney Tire sells popular tires 

from all the major manufacturers 

(Firestone, Michelin, Mickey Thompson, 

and Toyo, just to name a few). However, 

Cheney is not just a tire shop. Custom

wheels and accessories, roadside 

commercial service, and even lawn and 

garden equipment sales are just a few 

things that locals have depended on 

the Cheney family for since, well, since 

the Eisenhower Administration. And of 

course, an area where they really shine is 

in the suspension and lift kit world. 

Lifted rides may seem like a relatively 

new phenomenon, but Cheney Tire 

owner Tom Cheney has been at this 

game for quite awhile. “We actually 

started messing around with lift kits in 

the late ‘70s,” Cheney tells us. “I built 

my own for a 1975 Blazer...got longer 

shackles and springs and hangers and 

got started way back then.” 

And then things really caught on. 

Cheney became renowned for these 

jobs, and the arm of the business that 

handles them now goes by the name of 

“Nasty North Offroad”. Word spread by 

mouth across the area (the BEST form of 

advertising, by the way) about the quality 

work Nasty North does, including to a 

local military base. And eventually, to a 

young soldier who had a vision for just 

how beastly his 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 

1500 could eventually be. 

We Salute a Special Build 

“We did a lot of his brothers-in-arms’ 

vehicles,” says Joel Kinne, a salesman 

at Cheney. “They were the ones who 

told him, ‘Go down to Cheney Tire, 

they’ll make ya’ look good.’ So we made 

him look really good, with a six-inch 

suspension lift and some 37 inch tires.” 

A great many build stories would end 

happily right here, with a boss pickup 

riding 37s high off into the sunset. Turns 

out, this truck’s story is just beginning. 

“He wanted to go even bigger, and give 

it more power,” Kinne recalls. “We just 

went from there with it.” The basis for 

that “more power” Kinne mentions? 

It comes courtesy of an Edelbrock 

Supercharger. “He came back in looking 

for a headlight,” Kinne chuckles, “and I 

ended up selling him a supercharger.” 

Even Bigger, Even Badder 

And the momentum of this build only 

multiplied. A 3” body lift was added to

complement the BDS suspension lift, 

adding up to a towering nine inches 

altogether. Those 37” tires were stepped 

up to 38” Mickey Thompson MTZs and 

wrapped around 20”x12” XD 825 wheels. 

The owner decided not to enhance 

the Silverado’s current fender flares to 

accommodate the new, massive wheel 

situation. And Kinne has a hypothesis 

about that. “There are no fender laws 

in the state of New York. He wanted 

them to stick out and look pretty crazy.” 

A Flowmaster Outlaw exhaust system 

was installed, and a Cannon intake was 

mated to the bolt-on Edelbrock. “We 

didn’t do much on the exterior, except 

for make this thing look big and bad.” 

Can’t argue with Kinne there. 

When all was said and done, over 

forty man hours were invested in this 

aggressive build, as well as an estimated 

$25,000 in aftermarket parts. What did 

the young soldier who footed the bill 

think about that? Well worth it for such 

a quality job. And he intends to drive it 

regularly.... when he gets home, that is. 

He couldn’t be reached for comment, as 

he’s recently redeployed overseas. But 

one thing is for certain, he has one hell of 

a ride waiting for him when he gets home. 

Apple Pie and Chevrolet 

So, just to recap: we’ve got a family 

business with almost seven decades 

serving their community. We have 

a gorgeous, Detroit monster with a 

supercharger and a 9” lift. And we have 

a bona fide American hero, protecting 

the nation’s freedom abroad who can’t 

wait to come home and drive it. The only 

way this could be more American is if 

the fellas at Cheney install a bald eagle 

nest in the glove compartment. Cheney 

has released no comment on that thus 

far, but who knows? It seems like Nasty 

North can do it all.

Mustang GT with plenty of goodies under 

the hood, and a 2013 Subaru BRZ sporting 

a widebody kit and turbo conversion—team 

Canada expects the latest build, a 2018 Ford 

F-150 Supercrew 4×4, to be a smashing hit. 

And so far, they’re right on the money. 

“The Ford F-150, which will be given away at 

the 2019 Keystone Canada Super Show [for 

Keystone customers], is sporting some of the 

best of the best when it comes to parts and 

accessories—bread-and-butter names in the 

industry, as well as a few up-and-comers,” 

said Ruzzi. “It’s the star of the Keystone 

Canada Project K Facebook Page. Keystone 

customers, manufacturers, and consumers/ 

enthusiasts can follow along and participate 

in some of the activities online. There will be 

many Jobber Night training sessions, and 

Keystone customers are encouraged to use 

the vehicle at their own sales, off-road, and 

open-house events. We have learned from 

each of these builds, and this latest one is 

truly the best yet,” continued Ruzzi. 

Project K continues to see a lot of action. 

In February, Jason McDonald and Ian 

Coneybeare of Keystone Canada drove the 

cherry bomb down to the Keystone BIG 

Show in Grapevine, Texas and then back 

to the Great White North—stopping at 

iconic attractions along the way and posting 

to Facebook quirky clues about where 

Big Red was on the route. Additionally, 

the last Project K Jobber Night was held 

on Wednesday, March 28th with Westin 

Automotive and Warn Industries—a great 

evening that gathered everyone together for 

shop talk in a comfortable setting.
