As a part of our efforts to
promote a healthy business climate
and assist area businesses to prosper,
the Fairmont Area Chamber
creates and distributes materials
that showcase our area's unique
amenities, recreational activities
and community events. These publications
help to communicate the
vibrance, the beauty, and the cultural
and economic vitality that
our area has to offer.
Last month, the Fairmont
Area Chamber distributed over
1,000 of our 2018 Visitor and Relocation
Guides to Martin County and
Fairmont City Maps to residents
and visitors during the Interlaken
Heritage Days parade. We continually
distribute these materials and
a variety of other informational
resources from the Chamber and
ABOVE: The Visitor & Relocation Guide to Martin County features valuable information
for anyone looking to visit, relocate or build a business in our area.
other community organizations
throughout the year. We will offer
many of these materials at our
community information booth at
the Martin County Fair, August 13-
19. Stop by and see how we are
working to support and grow area
businesses and our community.
Welcome Chamber intern, Mason!
We are excited to announce the
addition of summer intern Mason
Steuber to our staff at the Fairmont
Area Chamber. Mason will
be working in our office as a part
the intern program coordinated
through the Minnesota Valley Action
Council and funded in part by
Martin County.
Mason is the son of Mark and Melissa Steuber of
Truman. He is a junior at the University of South Dakota,
where he is pursuing a degree in Business Administration.
When asked about his interest in the program, Mason
replied: "I have lived in Martin County my whole life,
so I was excited to have the opportunity to intern close to
home. I wanted to be a part of the program so that I could
gain work experience working with familiar faces." Feel
free to stop by this summer and say hello to Mason!
With change comes opportunity
By: Fairmont Area Chamber Board of Directors
The Fairmont Area Chamber Board of Directors
is committed to keeping you informed, serving
our members by providing exceptional value in membership
and continuing to grow the Fairmont Area
Chamber and our community. We are here to share our
mission with you and to let you know how you can get
involved.
There is a lot going on this summer already!
First off – the Annual Pork Master’s Golf Outing at Interlaken
Golf Course. Miranda Larsen and Kandi Menne
have been working closely with the Pork Master committee
to ensure the continued success of this event.
The golf outing will be taking place on Monday, July
23rd and there are still a few openings left. Give Kandi a
call to get your team registered.
The 2018-2019 Leadership Martin County
class is now accepting applications. Leadership means
something different to everyone and this class will help
you to use your personal leadership strengths to promote
growth and solve problems in our community.
This is a valuable opportunity to learn about yourself
and our community, to meet new people and to build
new relationships. The program is offered every other
year, with the 2018-2019 class to kick off in August.
The Chamber has teamed up with Peggy Young of Riverland
Community College to put together the curriculum
for this amazing program, which meets for one full
day each month over a period of nine months. Please
contact Kandi at the Chamber or Board member Mandi
Kosbab with any questions or for more information.
The Chamber Board of Directors meets each
year to discuss our strategic plan. We focus on our mission
and goals, business community needs, and how
the Chamber can help to stimulate growth. One of our
current goals is to build an active retail committee.
Ann Terfehr of the Chamber Board is heading up this
committee and will be starting with some initiatives in
downtown Fairmont. Fairmont has great variety in its
retail base but there is always room for growth. If you
are in retail and would like to contribute to this effort
or if you have any questions or ideas for the committee,
please contact the Chamber or reach out to Ann. As
a retail business owner, Ann is excited to expand this
committee and to gather new ideas.
A continued focus on Fairmont Area Life is another
initiative that the Board of Directors is looking
to revamp as part of our strategic plan. This initiative
began as “Brain Gain,” an idea that counters the “Brain
Drain” phenomenon, where high school graduates depart
their rural homes to seek success and life in the big
city. The “Brain Gain” initiative was funded by a grant
and our efforts were combined with studies from the
University of Minnesota to develop innovative ways to
draw these people (and others) back to the Fairmont
area. Fairmont Area Life narrows in on quality of life
amenities in Martin County (Continued on page 6)
Grants available from MCYF
The Martin County
Youth Foundation grant applications
are now available for
their Fall grant cycle. Grants
will be made to qualified, nonprofit
organizations that will address important community
youth needs. Funding received may be used
for youth program costs and support materials. Eligible
organizations include those with 501(c)3 status,
public agencies, units of government, and churches.
The mission of the Martin County Youth Foundation
is to acquire, manage and distribute funds to
enhance the lives of youth in Martin County. Interested
groups may pick up grant applications and guidelines
at the Fairmont Area Chamber of Commerce, 323
East Blue Earth Avenue or fill them out online at www.
martincountyyouthfoundation.org.
The deadline for submitting a grant application
is September 15th. Please send completed grant
applications to: Martin County Youth Foundation, P.O.
Century 21 - Gillian Tunnell
(507) 399-9211
Anyone looking for a home recently may be feeling very
frustrated! Here in the Fairmont area, and actually, nationwide,
inventory is low and there are more multi-offer situations than realtors
have seen in in many years. Sometimes, with these market conditions, the
price may be driven up as people offer more than the asking price in order to
make their bid successful. An important lesson for buyers to learn from this is
– don’t hesitate! Go to a showing prepared with all the information your realtor
can give you, ask questions, and check the home very closely if you think you
might be interested. Get a Pre-approval letter from your lender so that the seller
knows you are serious if you decide to make an offer, and that you are qualified
for a loan in the necessary amount. In a low-inventory market, a buyer needs to
be prepared to act decisively in order to have a successful offer on the home of
their dreams! And for sellers, this is a great time to list!
Edward Jones Investments - Mandi Kosbab
(507) 235-8524 - Member SIPC
Mandi Kosbab, Drew Schellpeper & Dan Hamlet
had the opportunity to attend Edward Jones Regional Meetings in Alexandria
last month. One of the highlights was an event that became near & dear to their
hearts. These 3 Financial Advisors, plus another 65 Edward Jones attendees
joined Ryan and Jenny Theune and their sons Drew and Dillan in a fundraising
walk/run to raise money for Gigi's Playhouse, an organization that supports individuals
with Down Syndrome and their families. Little Drew has Down Syndrome,
so the Theune family, team name "Drew Crew," has participated in Cody's
Dash, for several years to raise money for the organization. They had to miss
the run this year, as Ryan was assigned to represent Blackrock at our meeting
instead. Our region wrapped their hearts around the Theune Family and helped
raise $7,251 for Gigi's Playhouse to make them the #1 team in their community.
No matter which team comes out of top, all the families who access Gigi's Playhouse
resources and its many Down Syndrome Achievement Centers are the real
winners! :) Ryan said they were hoping for 4-5 additional walkers and were
near tears when they found the resort lobby buzzing with runners and walkers
of all ages donning blue and yellow bandanas. They were especially amazed as
the Edward Jones children in attendance told them that they had been talking
about the event in their "Jones kids" group snap chat for a week before the run!
It’s great when people come together to make a difference!
Preparing for higher education costs can be an important
financial goal. While it may seem daunting,
planning early and saving carefully can make it attainable. Estimate college
costs: use resources to create a general picture, depending on the type of postsecondary
education your child wishes to pursue. Start saving early in a plan of
your choice (529 plan, Coverdell, Roth IRA, etc), research financial aid options,
and periodically revise your savings plan to ensure that you’re on track to meet
your goals. Ask our financial advisors, Seth Parker, Dan Warren and Chad Gerstabout,
how and when to start a college savings plan for your children today.
THINK LOCAL FIRST!
DID YOU KNOW?
Amazon creates less than half as
many jobs as local brick-and-mortar
Amazon grows and crowds out other
businesses, the fewer jobs will be
and communicates them to potential residents
through dedicated marketing campaigns and efforts
toward community awareness. The initiative
continues to attract interest from visitors and former
residents as a result of our work to grow our
local community. Executive Board member Sara
Pierce will be working with staff member Benjamin
Landsteiner on this initiative and forming a
new committee to continue this mission and help
the families and individuals who are looking to relocate
to our area. Contact the Chamber office or
Sara Pierce if you would like to join us in growing
this initiative.
Stephanie Busiahn, Chamber Board member
and Executive Director of Visit Fairmont, has a
number of exciting projects going on this summer
in partnership with the Chamber. You may have
noticed people conducting surveys around the
community, asking if you are a visitor to our area.
This is part of a Visitor Profile being implemented
by the U of M in an effort to determine who our visitors
are, what brings them here, and what would
bring them back to our area. Of course, we have
five beautiful lakes that now offer kayak rentals
and feature three lakeside restaurants, but Visit
Fairmont recognizes that there are other reasons
that visitors enter our community. Ag Tourism is
one of those reasons. Agriculture is a staple for
Martin County and the Chamber has taken an active
role in supporting this initiative and expanding
awareness among business and community
leaders as well as our visitors.
Another strategic goal of the Fairmont
Area Chamber is to strengthen our communication
with members. Part of this is already in
progress with the new “Event Bank” membership
software. Members have received communication
inviting them to set up their accounts. This
new system will grant you the ability to determine
which Chamber communications are most valuable
to you and your business. It will also help
to streamline communication between chamber
staff and members.
The Board of Directors would like to thank
We wish her all the best in her future endeavors.
The Board of Directors and the Chamber
