ISNESS Volume One (Private)

ISNESS tells of the story of the last remaining family on earth. The story is set in the remains of the culture of the 1960's, somewhere in North America. Over the course of 24 down-spiraling hours, one family member after another succumb to powerful forces of evolution run amok in their home. As in mythology, their characters are deeply archetypal and some posses supernatural qualities. On one level the story is the tale of a dysfunctional suburban family gone post- apocalyptic. On a deeper level, the story lays out and examines increments along the carnality/spirituality spectrum in the human predicament and how these attributes may withstand the perils of an apocalypse. Volume One introduces all the characters and their individual predicaments and points to some seeds of the conflicts to come. It also shows details of the island they live on and 2 of the 7 rooms in their house.

In the year 1969, The
balance of terror, which the
world had come to depend
upon, for the maintenance of
peace, was disrupted.

T
he previous year had marked a
record in the number of American
casualties in Vietnam and a steep decline
in support for the war even among it’s
6

staunchest proponents. In an attempt
to avoid imminent defeat, U.S. leaders
orchestrated an invasion into North
Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.

8

The broadened offensive
involved the deployment of
U.S. forces to Thailand and
required the mobilization
of reserves. This escalation
prompted China to enter the
war with the Soviet Union as
an ally. The protracted ground
war that ensued galvanized
countries across the globe to
take sides. Gradually, most
non-aligned and less developed
countries joined the coalitions
of the two major alliances.

As the localized conflict
escalated into a world war, U.S.
forces on the ground in Southeast
Asia were greatly outnumbered.
U.S. leaders decided to implement
a plan long kept under wraps,
to use tactical nuclear attacks.
These attacks were to hit selective
targets decisively with relatively
low-yield nuclear weapons.

They were to be aimed at
ports, landing places, supply
lines, bridges, railways, nuclear
weapon facilities and airfields.
They were intended to bring
the war to an end, based on the
model of World War II.
Volume One / ISNESS
13

But the U.S. had gravely
underestimated the
reaction by the Soviet-Chinese
Alliance. A series of nuclear
retaliations ensued, dismantling
communications and other
major infrastructures globally.
14

Volume One / ISNESS
15

16

Isolated command posts
on both sides continued
dispatching nuclear
attacks indiscriminately
in any perceived direction
of threat, producing
massive, globe-wide
radiation and a complete
ozone collapse.

18
Within 9 days, all humanity
on the planet had been
thoroughly exterminated as
well as most other life forms.
Scorched by sun, the remaining
life continued to dwindle.

Volume One / ISNESS
19

20
However, an unforeseen,
simultaneous process was
invisibly under way. The
unprotected planet became
slowly awash in waves of a
previously unknown, counter
radiation. It possessed an
aggressive neutralizing effect
on the ionizing gamma rays.
Within one journey around
the sun, earth was free of the
deadly radiation. Gradually,
life on the planet began to heal.

A
dome anomaly that had
formed over a 57 mile
radius in the Pacific ocean had
shielded one lone couple from
all the devastation: an American
soldier healing from his Vietnam
battle wounds and a beautiful
young flower girl who’s origins
are unknown.
THE PHOSPHENE PHENOMENA was believed by the native ancients to be an apparition
SCIENCE CORNER
THE FRATERNAL TWINS are different from identical twins, scientists
have found. It is even possible for them to be a boy and a girl.
Two eggs fertilized by two sperm cells have thus selected to bring into the
world a set of twins that are not twins at all!

Fuck you Larth
Even though she looked normal,
she crawled and walked much
later than other children her age.
At age three, her parents became
concerned as they were still awaiting
her first words. After some testing,
the family’s physician determined
that she was mentally subnormal or
mentally deficient, terms that had
recently replaced feeble-minded.
Doctors stated this condition
was characterized by a state of
incomplete mental development
where she would be incapable of
adapting to the normal environment
and would not be able to maintain
an existence independently of
supervision, control, or external
support. The doctors further stated
that this condition was most likely
due to some kind of biologic
pathology resulting in arrested
development, which was incurable.

Gather the kids for this enjoyable family project! Certain
to keep them busy on a rainy day.
Cutting your fabric:
Draw a chart of 1” squares. Into
each square draw lines corresponding
to those in the small, pattern
squares. Using dressmaker’s
carbon, transfer the design to your
fabric of choice. (You may also
cut out your paper patterns and
trace their edges onto the fabric).
Remember: Each piece needs to be
cut out of fabric twice for front and
back!
Sewing the parts together:
Now is the time to begin the
assembly of all the pieces! Follow
the seam line indicated on the pattern
with a simple stitch to secure
together the front and back sides of
each piece! Do not sew the section
marked with dots! You will need an
opening to stuff each part before
you connect it to the body!
The Stuffing:
Now is the time to think about stuffing
your doll! Use a long utensil to
help get the stuffing all the way into
the narrower parts. Fill each part
just enough to make it puff out but
not so much as to make it hard!
Assembly:
The assembly of all the body parts
is to be done taking great care to
match the right limb in the right
place! Goodness! You would not
want to labor just to find that you’ve
attached that leg in the place of the
arm! It is indeed a delicate artistry!
As you close every last gap in the
doll’s “skin” be sure to catch any
stubby protrusions of the stuffing
and press gently to secure them
back into place.
All I ever knew was this land, surrounded by brown water
A piece of heaven, as she called it
Every morning a new sun showed up on the horizon
and in the night a new moon came up and chased after it.
When I was a boy I used to go with the old man on his trips to the mainland
Volume One / ISNESS
147

148
We would ride across the brown waters on the red tugboat

and the barge, as big as our whole house , would tug behind.
149

He told me that the water we were riding on used to be filled
with swimming animals called fish. When we reached the
mainland, we would hitch the barge at the dock and walk up
the hill.
He taught me how to fight off the coyotes at the mall. We would
fill many carts with supplies and tie them together. Then we
would roll them down to the dock and load up the barge.
150

Sometimes, if the sun was still high, we would picnic on the
roof of City Hall. We would look over the bay and he would tell
me stories about how it used to be.
That’s when things were good. Before he started to drink.
Before he dropped the baby.
SCIENCE
THE COMMON HOUSE FLY
The house fly is a danger to the health
of man and animals. It feeds and
breeds in manure, feces, garbage and
fermenting crop waste. They collect
disease germs in their hair legs and
feet and in their digestive tracts. If
the fly has access to man’s food it
contaminates it by walking over it and
by leaving their excreta on it.

for an unsolicited audition and ravishing us with her
pushed everyones performance to the next level and for
this we are forever grateful to her. When not acting, she
loves to sleep or chase squirrels.
Michael Calloway / Costume Design
In his designs, Michael uses desconstructed, vintage and
found objects that result in super avant garde, one-of-akind
pieces of wearable art. Think: outsider-art as fashion.
Advised and mentored for many years by designer Koos
Van Den Akker, he has been featured in Vogue Italy
LAYER FIVE:
Pineapples and beats. Pour the juices
from the pineapples and beats into a pot
and bring to a boil. Sprinkle 10 packets
of Italian Salad Flavored Jell-O onto the
boiled mixture and allow to dissolve.
Mix and refrigerate for about 40 minutes
or until the mixture has the texture of
pudding. Now you can slice the pineapple
rings into halves and carefully set them
in your next pan around the perimeter.
Together with the red beet color this will
create a lovely vision of many sunsets!
Add all the beets behind the pineapples
and pour the partially set jell-o mixture
into the pan. Return to refrigerate.
LAYER SIX:
Tomato sauce. This mixture was
prepared and set in a pan while making
layer two.
LAYER SEVEN:
Corn, black olives and tomato sauce.
Drain the corn, olives and pimentos and
set in a bowl. Boil Sprinkle 6 packets
of Celery Flavored Jell-O over 4 cups of
boiled water. When dissolved, mix and
refrigerate for about 40 minutes or until
the mixture has the texture of slush.
Pour the jell-O mixture over the corn,
olives and pimentos. gently combine and
return to refridgerate.
LAYER EIGHT:
Kidney beans and hotdogs. Drain the
kidney beans and the hot dogs and
place into the mold. Sprinkle 6 packets
of Celery Flavored Jell-O over 4 cups of
boiling water. When dissolved, mix and
refrigerate for about 40 minutes or until
the mixture has the texture of slush.
the mixture has the texture of slush.
Pour the jell-O mixture into the mold.
gently combine and return to refridgerto
safely release the jell-o from the molds:
Fill a wide bowl with boiling water. Carefully
suspend the bottom exterior of your
mold in the hot water for 10 seconds. take
care not to allow any water to flow over
the sides and into the mold. Any spoilage
would be disheartening! Use a knife to
circle the rim of the Jell-O to separate
its top edge from the pan. Lightly wet
the surface of cake stand and turn it
upside down on top of the mold. Hold
both together and turn back over to the
