Summertime Heat Awareness & Safety
One of the most significant health risks to be aware of this summer is the heat, which you may not think
about unless you live in the warm deserts of the Southwest. However, heat can be a major risk in any part of
the country - especially in areas where there is excessive humidity. Heat related illnesses can affect people
of all ages and these illnesses tend to progress quickly, so it is essential that you know what to look for.
Below is a closer look at what you need to know to beat the heat this summer.
Recognize the signs of heat illness: Did you know that by the time you are thirsty, you are already
dehydrated? Quenching your thirst is also a poor indicator of proper hydration. Therefore, you will want
to know some of the other signs of dehydration that may also indicate heat stroke or exhaustion. Look for
heavy sweating, confusion, dizziness, hangover-like headaches, muscle weakness or cramps and nausea. If
these signs are present, find a cool area, drink some water and call 911 for assistance.
Know the hazards of heat: Even in 80 degree weather, heat can be problematic. When you are out in the
sun for long periods, your body will use water much faster, so you need to drink extra and take breaks out of
direct sunlight. Physical activity also raises your body temperature, so you should consider this when you go
out for a jog during the summertime.
Identify high-risk situations: Every year brings a flurry of news stories of children and pets suffering
fatal heat illness and these incidents are usually attributed to being left in the car. In just 10 minutes, the
temperature inside of the car can jump from the temperature outside at 80 degrees to 99 degrees. Children
or pets left in these conditions can quickly overheat and lose consciousness. Adults should exercise caution
for their own sake as well, as there have been many instances of adults falling asleep in the car and suffering
fatal heat stroke. Other risky situations in the heat include periods of outdoor work or physical activity, hot
days at high elevation areas and consumption of alcohol in the summer heat.
MAKE PDF AND LEAVE THIS TEMPLATE WHERE IT IS. THANKS,
MARY
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Stay prepared: To fight back against the heat, stick to indoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.
You will also want to carry water wherever you go and wear lightweight clothing made from breathable
fabrics like linen or cotton. What you eat can also affect how your body handles the heat - meats and other
high protein foods cause your body to use more water in digestion.
BRADFORD COLONY 1 & 2
(BC1&2) NEWS FROM THE BOARD
Happy 4 th of July!! The Board wishes everyone a safe and wonderful
Independence Day.
Hurricane Preparation
Hurricane season started on June 1 st . Be prepared while hoping we
don’t have any severe hurricane hit our area. Set up a plan - know how
much water is needed per person to keep on hand, get can food, refill
needed medications, where to go if evacuation is needed etc… There
are a lot of resources on-line or from the county that can help you plan.
Welcome New Homeowners
If you have recently moved in and are relatively new to our community,
welcome! Please go to the TownSquare website (https://app.townsq.
io/associa/signup) or download the free app on your phone and register
your information so you can receive information and notices via
emails. You may also download the deed restrictions so you can be
aware of these codes of practices for our subdivision. The Board would
also like to invite you to come to our monthly meeting so we may meet
you (and you meet some of us-your neighbors). The meeting is 7 PM, 2 nd
Wednesday every month held at the MUD building next to the water
tower just north of West Little York on Kenswick Drive and Falmouth
Ave (the address is 15300 Falmouth Avenue). The July meeting will
be on 7/11/18. If you have any questions regarding assessment dues
and deed violation letter, please contact our management company
representative - Shannon Abernathy s.abernathy@pmghouston.com
- and get details so you can take needed actions.
Misc.
Summer is in full fledge. Water your yards sensibly, check for sprinkler
leakages, check and make sure you are not watering the driveway
and sidewalk instead of the grass. Water is one of the most precious
resources. Don’t waste it. Please follow the lawn watering schedule
sent by the M.U.D.
We can also help to maintain free flowing drainage pipes of the sewer
system by not putting cooking oil and grease down the sink or drain,
but instead wipe and collect waste oil in glass jars and dispose in
garbage for small quantities, for large quantity like those used in deep
fryers, you can take them to Harris County Household Hazardous Waste
Collection Facility (6900 Hahl Road on West Little York just north of
290, they are open every Wednesday 9 AM to 3 PM; don’t put food
scrapes into the sink, put out them in the garbage.
Monthly meeting
Our monthly meeting has moved to 2 nd Wednesday of every month
and we are meeting at the M.U.D. 102 water plant building next to the
water tower. Meeting starts at 7 PM.
(BCS3) 2018 ANNUAL MEETING RESULTS
Following are the results BCS3 Annual Meeting that was held on May
20 th . We had a quorum total of 17 property owners between the attendees
and the proxy statements that were submitted.
ACTION ITEMS
• Director Election
One position was up for election this year.
• Barbara Boyd (Vaughnville Drive) was elected to fill this open position
We would like to thank Josh Murray (outgoing Board member) for his
six years of effort as a member of the Board of Directors.
Following the election, there was a discussion about the HOA budget
and associated surplus, illegally parked vehicles and near-term action
for correction, mosquito spraying plans, significant delinquency issues
needing additional legal action and ongoing DRV actions related to
farm animals in the neighborhood.
There was also a very good discussion concerning the options being
presented to BCS3 by the CRPOA group as to the potential opportunity
for our residents to be part of the Pool / Rec center located at West
Little York and Addicks Satsuma Road.
BOARD OF DIRECTOR ASSIGNMENTS
Following is the lineup for the Board of Directors for the 2018-2019
HOA calendar year. Note that with only three Directors, some members
will fill dual positions
President - Mark Przywara (Term expires in May 2019)
Vice President / Treasurer - Barbara Boyd (Term expires in May 2021)
Vice President / Secretary - James Mohr (Term expires in May 2020)
The Board would like to thank everyone who either attended the
meeting or took the time to get their proxy statement submitted so that
their position would contribute to the quorum and/or vote. Without
this input, there would have been no meeting as per the HOA Bylaws.
BRADFORD COLONY SECTION 3
(BCS3) VOLUNTARY WATER CONSERVATION
Water conservation is still a major issue for our area. Each resident has
received an insert in their Harris County MUD 102 water bill asking that
they observe the voluntary water conservation program that has been
proposed for this area.
There are two simple rules with respect to this program:
1. Even numbered residences should water outdoors on Wednesdays
and Sundays while odd numbered residences should water outdoors
on Tuesdays and Saturdays. No water should be used outdoors by
any resident on Mondays.
2. Water should not be used outdoors between the hours of 6 AM and
10 AM and between the hours of 6 PM and 10 PM.
Let’s all work together to conserve our water resources while maintaining
our yards within the guidelines outlined by the Harris County
MUD district.
(BCS3) 2018 ASSESSMENT UPDATE
Note that as of June 1 st , 54 of the 59 property owners in BCS3 have either
paid their 2018 assessment or are in an active payment plan. Those
property owners that are still delinquent have had their files turned
over to the HOA lawyers for the next steps in the collection process.
This is an excellent situation for the HOA to be in financially at this time.
The Board would like to thank everyone for handling this payment
in a timely fashion. This is our only source of income for HOA related
bills and expenses such as electricity for the light poles, landscaping,
insurance, management fees and other issues.
(BCS3) CONTACT THE BOARD
As is the case with everything in our small neighborhood, every resident
should feel free to contact any Board member as to any issue or
question that you have about BCS3. Contact information for all the
Board members is located on the inside front cover of this publication.
CHARLESTOWN COLONY
(CHC) NOTES FROM THE BOARD
Happy 4 th of July!
Summer is in full effect and Charlestown Colony yards are looking good!
Let’s keep up the great yard work!
Yard of the Month for May:
Congratulations to 5607 W Vistaglen Loop.
Yard of the Month for June:
Congratulations to 5727 W Vistaglen Loop.
Pool:
The community pool is now open. Pool tags can be purchased providing that
HOA dues are current.
Home Run Businesses:
Charlestown Colony will not tolerate any home run business that can be seen by
other residents or the public. Should this continue all appropriate action, including
legal, will take place.
Cars:
We love our children, joggers, walkers and bike riders. Please slow down while
driving through our neighborhood and make complete stops as required by law
at posted stop signs. There have been several reports of running stop signs, which
poses an increased risk of accidents.
Parked Cars on Streets and Parked Cars Close Stop Signs:
When cars are parked on the street close to stop signs, it becomes very difficult
for drivers to maneuver around on-coming traffic. Please park cars safely on the
streets to avoid accidents. Also, summer is in full force, our neighborhood children
are enjoying bicycle riding, skate boarding and scootering, please be cognizant of
parked cars on the streets. It makes it difficult for our kids to maneuver around
these vehicles safely. We love our children and do not want to see them injured.
Flags:
Our flagpole installation was completed just in time for the Memorial Day holiday!
The flags are beautiful and enhance. This is a permanent flag solution for
Charlestown Colony.
Charlestown Colony Park:
Our community park is enjoyed by many of the residents and their family members!
It has bounced back since the days of Hurricane Harvey! Let’s keep it looking
amazing! There have been reports of trash and debris in the park. Please remember
to pick up after ourselves.
Although Hurricane Harvey reeked wide spread havoc in our community and the
release of the Addick’s Reservoir caused 80% of our subdivision to flood, winning
yard of the month is a testament of our community’s resiliency despite all the
tragedy we experienced.
As we continue to beautify our homes, we should not forget to celebrate the
milestones of our progress. There are many events happening now and later this
summer, let’s give ourselves a break every now and again. Remember, we are
Charlestown Colony Strong and we will come back stronger, better and more
beautiful than before Hurricane Harvey!
Happening Soon!
Debris Removal & Deed Restriction Violations:
It is the homeowner’s responsibility to remove trash and debris from the front of their
home. If more time is needed for repairs, the HOA Board and management company will
review these on a case-by-case basis. Please reach out to the management company.
Home Renovation Projects:
Most of us have completed the street view repairs needed on our homes. For those
who are still working on these repairs, please be cognizant of our deed restrictions
and the Architectural Review form required to complete exterior projects such as
replacing fences, exterior painting and pretty much any other exterior project attached
to the home that can be viewed from the street. The Architectural form can
be obtained from Principle Management Group Houston (PMG). We have all endured
a lot due to the flood and have probably filled out enough forms over the last few
months to last a lifetime. However, this form is just another step in the renovation
process and keeping the project on track. Our deed restrictions have these forms
in place to maintain the appearance of Charlestown Colony. If exterior projects are
completed without consent, the homeowner could be subject to make changes
such as re-painting the house all over again which is costly and time consuming.
Most of the Architectural Review forms can be processed within 10 business days,
but it could take up to 30 days. If it is urgent, please indicate that on the form and
include a phone number. PMG may be able to offer a verbal, “yes” to get the project
started while the form is being processed.
Our Furry Family Members:
There has been a noticeable number of lost and found pets posted on the Nextdoor
App. As we continue to rebuild, please secure the furry family members by fixing
broken fencing or other measures of security for our loving pets.
Got The Nextdoor App? https://nextdoor.com/
It only takes a few minutes to sign up and it helps keep everyone informed
on current events in our area.
If you see something, say something, because we are our best defense against
crime and retaining our home values!
Report:
• Park Lights that are not working properly
• Safety issues in common areas
• Suspicious activity
• Abandoned Houses
• Homes where recovery efforts have not begun
• Other Violations of our Deed Restrictions
Annual Dues Payment:
Thank you to all who have paid your HOA dues! If HOA dues have not been paid
yet, expect a certified letter soon with penalties. In order to avoid additional costs
and fees, there are several options to make HOA payments. As of February 1 st , unpaid
annual dues are considered delinquent and subject to late fees and penalties. Our
management company has new policies and procedures in place to collect on past
due HOA assessments. If these have not been paid yet, please make every effort to
(YTC) YARD OF THE MONTH
Yard of month for June is 15210 Cabot’s Landing
not only is it beautiful in the daytime it’s also
beautiful at night. They take very good pride in
their home and their yard... congratulations.
(YTC) CATS
Why are outdoor cats considered a problem?
Nuisance behaviors, such as urinating and
defecating in someone’s yard or garden, digging
in someone’s yard or garden, jumping on
someone’s car and upsetting an owned cat,
are the greatest concerns that the general
public has about outdoor cats.
Overpopulation is a serious concern as well.
Although 85 percent of the estimated 75 to 80
million pet cats in the U.S. are already spayed
or neutered, many have kittens before they are
spayed or neutered. Those kittens, especially if
they are allowed outdoors, add to the number
of outdoor cats and the problems associated
with them.
KAAWS [on FM 529 at Queenston specializes
in low cost spay/neuter and is a wellness vet.
281- 200-2325.
If my cats have been spayed or
neutered, why shouldn’t I let them out?
Nothing good can come from letting cats roam
outside. When outside, cats face dangers such
as injury or death from being hit by a car, being
carried off by a bird of prey, being harmed by
another animal or person and diseases and
parasites.
Fortunately, more owners are realizing that
indoor cats are safer and can lead happy
lives indoors. But millions of pet cats are still
allowed outside, usually without the visible
collars and identification that would help reunite
them with their owners should the cats
be picked up by a neighbor or animal control.
How can cat overpopulation be solved?
Spaying or neutering community cats using
Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) will reduce their
numbers. Spaying or neutering pet cats before
they reproduce will reduce their numbers and
help stop pet overpopulation.
Trap-Neuter-Return: If you are feeding or have
feral cats on your property, trap, transport,
recover and release the feral cats in your area.
CAP will provide the surgery and vaccinations
for FREE. Register for surgery on the available
day of your choice on the Surgery Reservations
page, 17555 Katy Freeway Houston, TX 77094,
281-497-0591 or 281-497-1537.
(YTC) HOAS AREN’T FOR EVERYONE,
BUT THERE ARE MANY POSITIVES
HOAs face critics from people who aren’t crazy
about having an organization dictate what
they can and can’t do with their property. And
they’re wary of living under bylaws that come
with fines for violations.
I hope this will help put a different prospective
on the HOA and its volunteers. Because there
are many positive things for the HOA. We as
volunteers love our neighborhood and we
are dedicated to improving every aspect of
our community. In order to do keep our family
in a safe environment and our most valuable
investment (our home) increasing in value.
We are looking to you, our neighbors, to do
their part to help us with our positive active
on taking pride in our community.
Let’s not give the Management Company a
reason to send out violation letters, this will
accomplish so much if you just do your part,
it will make everyone envy of our beautiful
neighbor and keep our yearly dues from going
up every year. On a positive note I ask everyone
to do their part. The following list is why
most residents get letters:
Lawn Maintenance:
Maintain your lawn to promote a healthy and
nice looking appearance: keep it fertilized &
watered, cut & edged lawn and around curb.
Please apply weed treatment at first sight of
weed growth. Maintain your flowerbeds, tree
wells, between joints on the driveway and
sidewalk/walkways to keep it free of weeds.
Also, groom your shrubs and trees and re-sod
the lawn if needed.
Remove mildew on the brick.
Trees: Prune the lower limbs of your trees to
a minimum of 13 feet of clearance over the
ground and street.
Recreational vehicles, Trailers, etc.: Must be
stored out of public view. All trailers shall be
parked only in an enclosed garage or off-site storage
as they are not allowed in the community.
Take down Holiday Decorations in a timely
manner.
Replace any rotten trim.
Please make necessary repairs to your gutters.
Keep trashcans out public view and take them
in on the same trash day.
(YTC) TRAVEL TIPS
• Always use a Travel Agent.
• Always Purchase Vacation
Protection Insurance.
• Place a travel alert on your credit card and
consider a card that eliminates the 3% transaction
fee on international purchases. Discover
Card is not widely accepted in Europe.
• Reconfirm your airline reservations 24 hours
prior to departure; reconfirm hotel reservations
48 hours prior to arrival.
• Arrive at the airport two hours prior to departure
for domestic flights and four hours prior
to departure for international flights.
• Copy your passport and email it to yourself.
In the event your passport is lost, stolen or
damaged, find the nearest American Embassy
to access your email. This will speed up the
process of having your passport replaced.
• Leave a copy of your complete itinerary as
well as a copy of your passport with your
emergency contact.
• Suspend mail and newspaper deliveries.
• Place home lights on a timer with a different
light scheduled for each evening.
• Have someone check your phone messages
to prevent your mailbox from becoming full.
This is an indication that you are not home.
• Don’t Facebook chronicles of our trip until
you return.
• Turn off the water to your washer; this is the
number one hose to break when on vacation.
• Roll your clothes or use packing organizers
in your suitcase.
• Place an index card inside your luggage with
complete name and address in the event your
tags are separated from your luggage. All luggage
looks the same on the carousel so place
a distinguishing mark, ribbon, etc. for easy
identification.
• Invest in a luggage scale or consider services
that deliver luggage to your hotel.
• Invest in a battery operated smoke detector
and carbon monoxide monitor.
• If you are traveling abroad, pay for as much
in US Dollars as you can stateside, i.e. hotel,
rental cars, admissions to attractions, dinner
reservations, etc.
• AAA membership is accepted worldwide.
Remember to ask for your discounts.
• Exchange your currency before departing
the US for the best rates. Your local bank can
order most widely used currencies, however,
you need to give a 3-5 business day notice.
Most banks no longer issue Traveler’s Checks
and most merchants don’t accept as they are
so easily counterfeited.
• Avoid wearing jeans or tight waistbands for
flights longer than four hours and invest in a
pair of compression socks to prevent ankle
swelling. Try to move around the plane every
two hours on international flights, if possible.
• Contact your mobile phone carrier for international
service questions.
(YTC) VACATION WATCH
If you are planning a vacation for an extended
time you can go to www.harriscountyso.org/
Programs/programs_VacationWatch.aspx
and you can submit a form for the Sheriff’s
department to keep an eye on your house
while you are away.
(YTC) THANK YOU
We want to recognize all who have contributed
HELP HORNE ELEMENTARY!
An easy way to help our
school is to turn trash into
cash. Horne Elementary
participates in the Box
Tops for Education program.
Some of the grocery
items we use have Box
Tops on them. Each Box
Top is worth 10 cents for
the school. You would pick
up a dime on street - so cut out the Box Tops and donate to Horne! You
can find the Box Tops logo on hundreds of products like Cheerios®, Hamburger
Helper® and Kleenex®, in almost every aisle of the store. To donate
the Box Tops, simply bring them to the reception desk at Horne, give
them to a family with children who attend Horne or contact this year’s
coordinator, Rufina Bonilla, for pick up. Her email address is rufinamb@
gmail.com and her cell phone number is 713-294-6940. Let’s collect them
all year long and give Horne a big boost to start the new school year!
COOL
HOW TO TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN
WHEN TRAGEDY STRIKES
In my role as executive director
at Shield-Bearer Counseling
Centers,
I am frequently asked by parents
or teachers how to help
children when they or their
community experiences a
tragedy.
Every child reacts differently
to loss. Younger children handle
the news differently than older children. A child’s personality and
values influence their reaction. Parents and teachers may notice children
displaying a greater amount of energy following a tragedy. Energy
released by their body’s natural response when safety is threatened
will find its way into more irritability, fidgeting and inability to focus
on tasks at hand.
But there are some things individuals who are raising or working with
children can do.
Model calmness.
Children will look to parents and other adults to cue their interpretation
and reaction to the tragedy. When children see the adults around them
remaining calm, they will be more easily reassured of their own safety.
Help them talk.
Parents frequently have difficulty discussing such horrible tragedies
with their children. As with other times of loss, they do not know exactly
what to say. Being available to listen to what children want to say
will likely be more helpful than putting together a lecture. Encourage
children to express how they feel when they are ready to discuss it.
Honestly answer questions.
When children do not know the answers, they will ask questions. Parents
who patiently attempt to answer tough questions will see their
children move through the pain of the tragic event. If you don’t know
the answers, tell them so. Reassuring them of their present safety will
help them learn to overcome fears that they might be struggling with.
Limit access to tragedy news.
Monitoring your children’s access to news reports of the tragedy will help
reduce the possibility of nightmares. When a child watches news programs
about a tragedy, parents should be present to discuss the contents of reports.
Keep them busy.
One of the most important things that a parent can do to help their
children work through a tragedy is to maintain the routine and structure
of their children’s lives. Keep appointments. Carry on with chores and
responsibilities. Meet obligations.
Help them help.
Every person touched by a tragedy is motivated to help in some way. The
negative emotions of fear, sorrow and anger can be channeled into acts of
kindness. Having a child gather items for tragedy victims, write a thankyou
note to the first responders or draw a picture for someone intimately
involved will help them feel they are making a difference. These actions
can help them regain a sense of control over their situation.
Remember that each child is an individual. What helps one child might
not help another. If there are significant changes in behavior, mood or
sleeping patterns, it is important to make a visit to a physician or professional
counselor to assess what professional help might be available.
Above all else, let them know they are loved.
INDEPENDENCE DAY 2018
Significance of Independence Day 2018
Independence Day 2018, also known as Fourth of July, is a federal
holiday observed yearly on July fourth. It is the anniversary of the
publication of the declaration of independence of the United States
of America from Great Britain in 1776.
History of Independence Day
The history of Independence Day 2018 dates back to the 18 th century
and the American Revolution (1775-83). In June 1776, representatives
of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle
weighed a resolution that would declare independence of the
United States from Great Britain. On July 2 nd , the legal separation
of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred, when the
Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of
independence that had been proposed by Richard Henry Lee of
Virginia. Two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration of
Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson,
John Adams and Benjamin Franklin.
Historians have long disputed whether Congress actually signed the
Declaration of Independence on July 4 th and most have concluded
that the Declaration was signed nearly a month after its adoption,
on August 2, 1776 and not on July 4 th as it is commonly believed.
The holiday remains to be celebrated on the fourth of July. Coincidentally,
both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers
of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as Presidents of
the United States, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was
the 50 th anniversary of the Declaration.
10 FIREWORKS SAFETY TIPS
While you are enjoying your grilling, family time and fireworks, take
time to remind your kids what this holiday is about. The lighting and
display of fireworks came with a price to many men and women sacrificing
for their kids and future generations. Use the fireworks display
as a teaching tool; share with them the lyrics of the star spangled
banner and, most of all, remain safe if your family tradition includes
lighting fireworks. Below are 10 fireworks safety tips you should use
and teach to your kids.
• Fireworks packaged in brown paper are made for professional
displays - avoid buying.
• Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities, especially
with sparklers.
• Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
• Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
• Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire
and to douse used fireworks before discarding in trash.
• Never allow young children to play or ignite fireworks.
• Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal
or glass containers.
• Never try to re-light or pickup fireworks that have not ignited fully.
• Never place a part of your body directly over a firework device
when lighting.
• Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.
Traditions of Independence Day
Independence Day is a day of family celebrations with picnics and
barbecues, showing a great deal of emphasis on the American
tradition of political freedom and patriotism. Many people display
the American flag outside their homes or buildings. Additionally,
Independence Day fireworks are often accompanied by patriotic
songs such as the national anthem and, in capable military bases, a
salute of one gun for each state in the United States, called a “salute
to the union,” is fired on Independence Day at noon.
When is Independence Day 2018
Independence Day 2018 is a federal holiday and falls on the fourth
of July. The day of the week that the holiday falls on, changes each
year. This year, July 4 th falls on a Wednesday.
NATIONAL MAC AND CHEESE DAY
One of the classic comfort foods earns a place of honor on
July 14 th . It is National Mac and Cheese Day!
Made with macaroni noodles, cream or milk and the golden
goodness of cheese, mac and cheese shines as a side dish but can
stand on it’s own as a main dish as well. From the classic mac and
cheese with cheddar or American cheeses to the spicy cowboy mac
with bacon and jalapenos, there’s a combination for everyone. Mix
up the cheeses or load up on seasonings, set the broiler for a couple
of minutes at the end of the cooking time and let the cheese get a
nice toasty crust.
to between 234 and 240 degrees F (112 to 116 degrees C) or until a small
amount of syrup dropped into cold water forms a soft ball that flattens
when removed from the water and placed on a flat surface. Remove from
heat and cool to lukewarm (110 degrees).
