MESSAGE FROM THE CY-FAIR
VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT:
The Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department is requesting homeowner assistance
in addressing the low hanging trees within the community. These low
hanging branches or limbs are hampering responses to calls for assistance.
The branches and limbs are damaging equipment and Homeowner’s trees.
Routes to locations have to be altered. Some locations are unable to have
an alternate route, leaving no recourse but to park the apparatus and walk
to the location.
Several pieces of equipment are 13 feet tall and CFVFD is requesting that
homeowners trim the trees to have a 14 feet umbrella over the street.
The Department members have been instructed not to damage their
apparatus or the Homeowner’s trees by driving down streets that do not
have appropriate passage. The fire department does not wish to have
a citizen with a fire or medical emergency that delays them receiving
attention due to having to locate an alternate route or being forced to walk
to the emergency location. If damage is caused by a homeowner’s tree, the
homeowner will be held responsible for the repair.
(CPV) A WORD FROM THE BOARD
The Board wants to thank all of our homeowners that either attended our Annual Homeowners Meeting
or sent in their proxies enabling the Board to conduct our annual meeting. It is so important to respond
by proxy or attend the annual meeting so that we can conduct business. We are your elected Board whom
you give us the right to represent you and our investment in the community! You learn of the budget set
aside for the year, its goals and its accomplishments throughout the year.
This year we elected a new Vice President and President to represent you. Please plan on attending the
next meeting if you want to meet your new Board members. The next scheduled Board meeting is July
30 th at SCS’s office on Cherry Park Drive. You may contact SCS for confirmation of date and time. Also
contact SCS if you want to be added to the agenda at the meeting to express any concerns.
Again, please be alert for hurricane season, which started in June. Please stay alert, prepared and vigilant.
Listen to all warnings and prepare to leave if warned!!!! We pray and hope that this year we will not
experience what happened last year.
Neighbors, please be considerate of others when you have a “BACKYARD PARTY!” The loud noice level will
not be tolerated and is very inconsiderate of your neighbors. This includes loud music in the garage or
out in your patio. We have been experiencing such behavior even late at night. The Harris County Sheriff
Department can be contacted if you are experiencing this for disturbance of the peace. Call 713-221-6000
(prompt 1).
DOG LEASH LAW
Did you know that Texas has a Dog Leash Law and Harris County enforces it? Your dogs must be on a
leash at all times and not be roaming the neighborhood or being walked without a leash, especially in
our walking trails. If you see a dog being walked without a leash, you may call the non-emergency Harris
County Sheriff’s Offices at 713-221-6000 prompt 1 or call the Harris County Animal Control 281-999-3191.
Refer also to Houston’s Leash Law below:
“Dogs and cats may not run at large in Houston. Running at large means going on public or private property
without the owner or another person having direct physical control of the animal. An animal on a leash is
considered to be under direct physical control of a person.
When animals are not on a leash they must be otherwise restrained, either behind a fence or in some other
enclosure that will prevent their escape.
(EC) BIRD / EGRETS
& NIGHT HERONS
Over the past four years, Easton Commons Village has been
spared the problem created by some of the larger migratory
birds, Egrets & Night Herons. Other Copperfield Villages have
had to become experts and create procedures on how to deal
with this type of wild life.
Keeping up the early spring bird watch, keeping trees trimmed
and installing bird deterrents are key to successful nuisance
avoidance.
According to The Texas Breeding Bird Atlas, 2006, some large multi species
(EC) HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS
Hurricane season is upon us. Although Easton Commons did not experience
flooding or power outages with Harvey, it has experienced week long power
outages in the past hurricanes.
Since natural disasters can involve other natural elements like tornadoes
and flooding, everyone needs to take steps to be prepared. Preparedness
can be as simple as checking the flashlights to make sure they have working
batteries, testing the generator to make sure you know how to operate it or
have containers on hand to store drinking water.
Harris County offers good preparedness advice on their website: www.
readyharris.org.
Get A Kit, Make A Plan, Stay Informed.
(EC) COMMUNITY CENTER
The Copperfield Community Center handles all baseball field and meeting
room reservations for parties and special events. Their phone number is
281-856-9060 and days of operation are as follows: Tuesdays Noon-6 PM,
Thursdays Noon-7 PM, Friday & Saturdays 9 AM-1 PM.
(EC) VACATION WATCH
The Harris County Sherriff’s Department has a Vacation Watch Program.
To sign up see the website: www.harriscountyso.org/Programs/programs_
VacationWatch.aspx.
(EC) MOSQUITO CONTROL
Although the Easton Commons HOA has mosquito control come through
regularly during the summer, it is not enough to get rid of them completely.
The summer months can be uncomfortable, due to all of the biting insects.
One of the best ways to prevent mosquitoes is to eliminate their breeding
grounds. Controlling mosquitoes also minimizes the risk of mosquito-borne
diseases, including St. Louis encephalitis and West Nile Virus encephalitis.
Homeowners need to scan their property and dispose of or remedy
anything causing standing water. The eggs that mosquitoes lay in rainwater
hatch in as little as two days. Tip over buckets or containers, flowerpots
with reservoirs, toys, boats, wheelbarrows, birdbaths and wading pools.
Clean clogged roof gutters; fill in low areas of the yard that collects water,
dispose of leaf piles and chlorinate pools. Treat water in fountains or water
gardens if the water does not flow on a regular basis.
(EC) CURB REPAIR
Curbs are repaired through Harris County Precinct 4. To request a work
order, visit their website - www.hcp4.net/cad/. You also may call 281-353-
8424 or fax a report to 281-893-5589. The homeowner’s must be involved
with the request. Only the straight part of the curb in front of the home will
be repaired. The end of the driveway and the inlet (curved smaller area)
to the driveway is the homeowner’s responsibility. Precinct 4 has been
remarkably responsive to requests, often making repairs in only two to
three days.
(EC) TRASH PICK UP SERVICE
All Residents must have an account with WCA for trash pickup. If you do not
have an account with WCA, your trash will no longer be picked up.
Trash pickup days are Tuesdays for trash and Fridays for trash and
recycling. Have waste ready at the curb for collection no later than 7 AM.
Residents may purchase a trash receptacle from any hardware store.
Recycling boxes may be requested from WCA, additional boxes may be
purchased from them as well. WCA Phone# 281-766-1914.
WCA observed Holidays are New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence
Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Trash pickup will
resume on the following trash collection day.
In order to keep the neighborhood appealing to potential buyers, increase
curb appeal and deter vandalism we ask that trash be placed at the curb
no earlier than the evening before scheduled pick up and trash cans be
removed the same day. If you have lawn service, please request the lawn
clippings to be hauled away or have them placed in a location that cannot
be seen from the street.
(EC) NEXT MEETING OF THE
HOME OWNERS ASSOCIATION
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Home Owners Association has
been changed to Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at the Copperfield Community
Center at 15409 Willow River Drive. The meeting will begin at 6 PM.
Residents are invited to attend. As meeting times and dates may change,
please check the copperfield.org website for updates (www.copperfield.
org/easton_commons).
Middlegate Village
(MG) TRASH PICK-UP SERVICE
Tuesday and Friday. Friday is also recycling pickup. Everyone knows
when trash is picked up, however what you might not know is that WCA
customers in Middlegate pay an extra fee to have trash cans picked up by
the back door. This means that our trashcans may be placed at the back of
our driveway. We DO NOT have to take the trash to the curb. However, big
items along with yard clippings and tree branches should be placed at the
curb. This keeps the neighborhood looking clean even on trash days.
Also, if you still want to put your trash down by the street, please keep it
off the sidewalks. We need to keep our sidewalks clear for our neighbors to
walk their dogs, take a leisurely stroll or to visit with neighbors.
(MG) HELP THE FIRE DEPARTMENT
HELP US
One thing most of us love about our drive through the neighborhood is the
beautiful trees that adorn our streets. This is where the fire department
needs our help. Some of the tree limbs hang TOO LOW and would hit the
fire trucks that come through. Several pieces of equipment are 13 feet tall
and CFVFD is requesting that homeowners trim the trees to have a 14 feet
umbrella over the street. The department members have been instructed
not to damage their apparatus or the homeowners’ trees by driving down
streets that do not have appropriate passage. The fire department does not
wish to delay reporting to a fire or medical emergency in order to locate an
alternate route or being forced to walk to the emergency location.
You have heard the saying, “More hands make the job go easier and faster.”
So we are asking for others to step up. This can really help the community
grow. Let’s take it up a notch and make it an even greater place to raise a
family! Your input and participation will go a long way in helping us all to
enjoy our neighborhood. Bird Committee and Newsletter Committee are
active and working to meet needs. What committee would you like to work
on? Contact SCS to ask how you can organize Christmas in the park, judge
yard of the month or perhaps you have an idea for a new committee. You
could be instrumental in keeping the heart beating strong in the middle of
Copperfield, in our village of Middlegate.
If you’d like to work on an existing committee or jumpstart another
committee, contact association manager Margie Naranjo by email
mnaranjo@scsmgmt.com, phone 281-500-7129 or website SCS Go. On the
The newsletter committee is assembling news for Middlegate column in
see covered, contact SCS and suggest an idea. If you are an enthusiastic
writer or skillful photographer and would like to contribute to newsletter,
contact SCS to be put in touch with committee.
(MG) BIRD COMMITTEE UPDATE
Adult herons are flying over the gazebo park daily. If they are raising young
herons in trees in neighborhood, they will stay nearby till their youngsters
are ready to care for themselves. When all herons and egrets have left their
nests in the fall, be certain to trim the tree or trees that they were nesting
in. Else next season migratory birds could easily return to same trees.
Some nests are solid structures that survive windstorms, rain and hail too.
Remove those nests to make the next construction job an original build, not
just a quick fixer upper.
(MG) ENJOY YOUR MIDDLEGATE PARKS
Middlegate Village maintains two parks for residents’ use. The pool park is
located at the intersection of Sterling Lake Drive and Silent Cedars Drive.
The pool facility is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The gazebo park
is bordered by Plum Lake Drive, Pinyon Creek Drive and Lakedale Drive.
Both parks are open during daylight hours and are equipped with picnic
tables, grills, playground equipment and volleyball nets.
PAINT HOUSE EXTERIOR
Do you want to paint exterior of your house? Does the siding or trim need
refreshing? Or do you want to change colors? Before you buy that paint, be
certain the colors are among the Middlegate Village approved colors. You
can find the list on the SCS Go site - select resources tab then documents
Next step, complete an architectural review application. It can also be
found on the SCS Go site - select resources tab then documents link. Please
(MG) VALUED RESIDENTS OF MIDDLEGATE
We would like to clear up some confusion as to where SCS Management Services
office is located versus the Copperfield Community Center (CCC) location. SCS
is located at 7170 Cherry Park Drive, east of Highway 6, next to the new fire
station. This is the office where you can report neighborhood issues, get
pool tags, visit with management and even pay your association dues. Main
number is 281-463-1777. Your community manager is Margie Naranjo. You
can reach her at mnaranjo@scsmgmt.com or at her direct line 281-500-7129.
CCC is located at 15409 Willow River Drive next to Labay Middle school. This
is where Middlegate HOA Board Meetings are typically held. Please contact
Rita Casey at 281-856-9060 to inquire about the community center and
(MG) SHERIFFS DISTRICT V
SAFETY FORUM WITH RESIDENTS
A HUGE “Thank you” goes out to all of the supporting officers for their time
and patience with all our questions at the forum. This latest in the series
was held at the Copperfield Community Center on May 29 th .
This was an EXTREMELY informative meeting. The officers informed us
of Online Reporting, Nuisance Abatement Program, statistics covering
the entire District 5, along with how to navigate their website www.
harriscountyso.org. Once you open the page, you will see 5 general services
at the bot-tom, the one that was covered during this meeting was the Online
Reporting. I encourage you to take a minute and visit the site. Remember,
these are non-emergency issues; use 9-1-1 for all life threatening situations.
This forum’s main topic was The Nuisance Abatement Program. Fortunately
for those of us in Copperfield Middlegate, we have a management company
that drives around and gives us warnings regarding such “nuisances.” This
doesn’t mean that we should just ignore a neighbor who is bringing down
the value of our homes, no, this is where you’d report: abandoned motor
vehicles, junked vehicles and abandoned structure and properties.
The officers also shared some very helpful tips to our residents:
1. If you have guns, of course keep them locked up, however you should
also engrave your driver’s licenses number for easy tracking if stolen. If you
don’t engrave, take a picture with your smart phone. The picture number
will serve as a tracking number if the officers find your product(s) at a local
pawn shop, thrift shop, etc.
2. It was also suggested to take pictures of your valuables once a year.
Much easier to show an officer a picture of your valuable with any unique
markings. The officers stated there was a MUCH great chance of getting
your valuables back with these tips.
3. Thieves have been targeting fitness centers lately. They suggested
that before you leave your house heading to the fitness center, put your
valuables in the trunk such as: purse, wallet, hand-gun (if you carry) and
anything else of value. You don’t need these to drive, so don’t give the
thieves an easy steal.
4. The also shared that gas station “grab and runs” are happening again.
Keep your doors locked and windows rolled up while pumping gas and
never leave your keys in the ignition.
5. Lastly, the topic of car break-ins around the neighborhood. They are still
hearing lots of people who have had their laptop, diaper bag, leather bag,
boxes, etc. stolen from their vehicle right out in front of their house. They
also shared that too many times it was real easy for the thief because the
doors were left unlocked. They suggested to clean out your vehicle and not
give the thieves something potentially valuable to see through the window.
This could cause them to break doors/windows/key locks and more just to
get to your goodies! Don’t tease them, just keep your car empty and if you
want, leave the doors unlocked (they said, not this reporter).
We also wanted to give out an extra shout out to Sergeant Adam Lightfoot
for overseeing the Copperfield contract deputies and providing monthly
statistics on nextdoor. Having Sgt. Lightfoot in our neighborhood is a
wonderful blessing.
(SC) TRASH & RECYCLING PICKUP
Southcreek trash pickup is on Tuesdays and Fridays. Southcreek has
backdoor pickup. This means that our trashcans may be placed at the back
of our driveway. We do not have to have our trashcans at the curb. Big items
such as yard clippings and tree branches should be placed at the curb.
Our deed restrictions state that all trash, including grass clippings, cannot
be on the curb until 6 PM the night before pickup and your trashcans must
be picked up from the curb by 6 PM, the day of pickup. So… you cannot
have trash on the curb until Monday and Thursday nights until 6 PM and
everything must be removed from the curb by 6 PM on Tuesdays and
Fridays. This includes any bags that contain lawn clippings. If you have
a lawn service, have them place the bags behind your fence and not
leave the clippings on the curb.
Our recycling day is Tuesday. Please have your recycling bin at the curb by
7 AM on Tuesdays. Please pick up your recycling by 6 PM on Tuesdays to
comply with our deed restrictions.
CRIME WATCH TIPS
The key to an effective crime watch program is to communicate - simply
knowing your neighbors and talking. Always let a trusted neighbor know
when you are on vacation or out of town for a long period. When you are
away from home, these simple, preventative measures help prevent home
burglaries: 1) always set your burglar alarm; 2) install keyed dead locks and
don’t leave the key in the deadbolt lock; 3) install motion-sensor lights;
4) don’t hide a spare key anywhere that can be easily discovered; 5) stop
the mail or ask a friend to get it; 6) provide less hiding spaces for burglars
by following the 3/6 rule where shrubs are trimmed in front of the house
no higher than 3 feet from the ground and trim trees so that the lowest
branches are at least 6 feet up; 7) lock up ladders and tools that could be
used to break in; 8) leave a radio on turned to a talk show station; 9) put
lamps on a timer; 10) turn down the phone’s ringer; 11) bolt down safes so
they can’t be picked up and carried out; 12) hide valuables in a hollowed
out book or a fake wall outlet and 13) consider placing safety film over
windows near door handles to make glass hard to smash.
BLOCK CAPTAINS & NATIONAL NIGHT OUT (NNO)
Westcreek still needs block captains. If you want to know if your street
has a block captain or you would like to volunteer to be a block captain,
contact Larry Berger at lberger@comcast.net. Our crime watch committee
is already planning the 2018 National Night Out, which occurs the first
Tuesday in October. If you would like more information about NNO in
Westcreek or you would be interested in hosting a gathering for NNO,
HURRICANE SEASON
Hurricane season officially began on June 1 st and already there was a
tropical depression near Florida! Don’t’ get caught unprepared in the event
our area is in the path of Mother Nature’s fury! Plan accordingly:
• Stock a 3 day supply of food and water. Minimum 1 gal of water per person
per day.
• Flashlight. Avoid using candles if power is lost.
• Radio.
• Extra batteries for the radio and flashlight.
• Cell phone w/charger.
• 7 day supply of any critical medications.
• First aid kit.
• Blankets.
• Extra clothing readily available.
• Baby supplies (diapers, formula) if you have infants in your family.
• Set your refrigerator to the coldest setting possible. In the event of a power
20
failure, keep the doors closed as much as possible.
• Create an evacuation plan for your family and establish a meeting place in
case anyone is separated.
• Keep your cars gas tank filled if a storm is reported anywhere in the gulf. A
storm can be upon us with little warning.
• Cash - ATM’s don’t work when the power is down.
• Clear outdoor areas of any items that may turn into projectiles by high
winds.
• If the wind is blowing during a storm - stay indoors!
• Turn off and secure any propane tanks you may have.
• Keep windows and doors shut during any storm.
• Stay off the porch during any storm. Lightning is frequent in our area and
your porch, even though covered, does not offer full safety - you can still
be struck!
• Keep large trees trimmed. Allow the wind to blow through the trees by
thinning the tree. Be sure large, low-hanging limbs are trimmed back or
removed completely and not growing against your home, potentially
damaging it.
Additional hurricane preparedness information can be found at www.
redcross.org.
(WC) GARDENING TIPS
It goes without saying - it is HOT outside! Stay cool and be sure to irrigate
lawn and garden areas accordingly. Also be sure to keep your pets wellwatered
and provide cool areas for them. When taking them for walks,
remember the sidewalk WILL burn their little paws, so be careful!
LAWN / GARDEN CARE
• Water application for our lawns continues to be important - remember
to water only in the early morning hours, before 10 AM as this will prevent
fungus development you will appreciate not having to deal with in the
latter weeks of summer and fall.
• Re-sod bare, diseased or weak areas of your lawn now if you have not already done
so - St. Augustine takes hold and produces rhizomes (horizontal roots or “runners”)
which leads to a thicker turf now better than any other time.
• Top-dressing with lawn soil and compost is acceptable, but beware of applying
products with high manure content as this may cause burning upon contact. Water
deeply.
• Aerate gardens producing vegetables and herbs well to prevent soil caking our
high clay content soil we have all been blessed with is prone to doing.
• Keep an eye out for pests - especially fire ants and cinch bugs. Rains will bring out
ant nests and see increased activity as colonies try to spread out. The excessive
heat is ideal for cinch bugs to gain strength.
• Lawn looking yellow? Could be chlorosis. Use a granular or liquid iron supplement,
but be sure to clean off concrete areas to avoid stains to develop.
• If you have blotch spots on your grass blade, the likely cause is Gray Leaf Spot. Use
a fungicide that contains Daconil, Consan or Banner to cure this issue.
• Summertime Flowers - high temperature, sun-loving flowers will do best from
now until the end of August. Plant Black-eyed Susan, Russelia, Verbenas, Dianthis,
Coreopsis, Daylily, Peony and Lantana as well as Asiatic lily or Salvia in direct
sunlight areas. Impatiens (if you can still find them), Begonias and Rain Lily do well
in the low light areas during the summer.
TREES / PLANTS
• Now is the time to feed Canary Island, Date, Mexican Fan, Sago and Queen Palm
varieties. Fertilizer spikes that add magnesium, potassium and manganese are
ideal as these are the most prevalent elements lacking to palms found in our area.
• As mentioned earlier, keep large trees thinned out - allow high winds to pass
through rather than block the wind during hurricane season.
• Be sure to keep your home’s gutters clean and free in the event heavy rains
are upon us. Clogged gutters cause siding and fascia to become discolored and
ultimately rot. Such repairs are by no means cheap or easy to deal with.
Be safe and enjoy the July 4 th holiday - many have sacrificed so that we can enjoy
our freedom.
everyone who meets her. We are so proud of you, Paige! RCS loves you and we cannot
wait to see how God uses all of your talents as you serve Him in the next stage of your
Marketing vs. Listing
Don’t be fooled, a ‘For Sale’ sign in your front yard is not
a marketing plan and neither is making sure your home is
listed on HAR. The difference between listing a home and
marketing a home is critical to the overall success of selling it.
As a successful real estate agent, I specialize in real
estate marketing and will create a comprehensive
customized plan with you to showcase your home.
Please feel free to call or email me anytime with questions.
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA -
COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found
in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant
in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting
helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership
skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities
that allow them to:
• Try new things.
• Provide service to others.
• Build self-confidence.
• Reinforce ethical standards.
Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals
while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high selfesteem.
As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure
can be resisted and the right choices can be made.
Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting
through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help
our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area
Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5
to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing
units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly.
Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools including:
Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley, Horne, Jowell,
Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan, Tipps, Walker and
In the aftermath of Harvey, the arrival of Houston’s first hurricane season will
undoubtedly stoke some trepidation from Houstonians still reeling from last
year’s unprecedented storm, but there’s no reason to panic if you have a proper
plan in place.
While June 1 st marks the official start of Hurricane Season, the Gulf of Mexico has
already seen its first named storm, Subtropical Storm Alberto, which made landfall
on the Florida coast, dumping rain and wreaking havoc across the country.
Predicting a Higher-than-Average Number of Named Storms
It’s notoriously difficult to predict how active a hurricane season may be, but
forecasters have already warned that the U.S. could expect to see a higherthan-average
number of named storms and hurricanes this year.
When Harvey swamped Greater Houston last year - flooding homes and forcing
many to flee - many residents who were new to the region hadn’t experienced
a storm before and were unprepared for what happened. Even some who had
weathered Houston’s hurricanes and floods in the past were caught flat-footed
by the extreme, widespread flooding caused by a storm of epic proportions.
As the tropics begin to warm again, experts are urging residents to heed the
lessons learned last year and get prepared now before any potential storm
appears in the Gulf.
TOP SEVEN THINGS YOU SHOULD DO NOW TO GET READY
Assemble a kit. Along with non-perishable food and water (one gallon
per person per day), toss in a flashlight, some spare batteries, cash, first aid
supplies and copies of important paperwork - insurance policies, emergency
contacts and prescriptions - in case you need to grab it and go. As many people
discovered during Harvey, exposure to contaminated floodwater can lead to
skin infections and other injuries. Consider packing protective gear such as
waterproof pants and boots to protect from floodwater and protective masks
to filter the air.
Heed your medical needs. If you have a chronic condition - or you serve as
a caregiver for someone with special medical conditions - be sure to have a
plan in place for managing your health during a storm. Keep a checklist of
medications that should be packed in an emergency and make sure you store
them in a sealed bag so that they remain clean and dry. Remember that some
medications, like insulin, are sensitive to temperature and must remain cool at
all times. Make sure you include your physician’s information, too, in case you
need to phone in for a refill from afar. Have a backup plan to power your medical
devices should the electrical grid fail. If you rely on a device for lifesaving care,
consider notifying the local public health authority to get evacuation assistance.
Buy now. Don’t wait for the frenzied supermarket rush to stock up on the
items you need in case you lose electricity or water or are forced to evacuate.
Consider purchasing enough supplies to last five to seven days. Harvey’s floods
prevented many people from leaving their homes for five days or longer, so it’s
important to have enough food, medicine and water to sustain you and your
family until roads reopen. Remember to keep your fuel tanks filled in your
vehicles and home generators.
Know where to go. Do you live in an evacuation zone? Most people sheltered
in place during Harvey, but if another storm threatens the region, a voluntary or
mandatory evacuation may be ordered. Get familiar with the local evacuation
routes and have a plan in place for what to pack and how to meet up with family
members.
Stay informed. Sign up for emergency alerts from your local county, city,
school district and other authorities. If you know you will not have access to
transportation, register now for assistance by calling 211. You can view power
outages and sign up for power outage alerts here. More information about
emergency alerts can be found at readyhouston.gov.
Talk to your family. Strike up a conversation with members of your household
before disaster strikes. Discuss responsibilities for each family member and
decide how you will communicate with each other. Figure out any special needs
that must be addressed beforehand. Make a plan for pets and childcare.
