Mission<br />
The mission of the Office of International Affairs (OIA) is to<br />
support the <strong>University</strong>’s central purpose of educating students<br />
who will be responsible global citizens and effective world leaders.<br />
OIA provides campus-wide leadership in coordinating, planning,<br />
developing, and financing international programs and initiatives.<br />
OIA’s role includes internationalization of curriculum through<br />
faculty international development, international student recruitment,<br />
undergraduate international student and English language student<br />
admissions, study abroad, services to international students, and<br />
coordination of linkage agreements with universities and other<br />
educational institutions outside of the United States.<br />

To achieve these goals, OIA:<br />
Office of International Affairs<br />
develops recruiting strategies to increase the number of international<br />
students studying at CMU, as well as the cultural<br />
diversity of the international student population;<br />
provides comprehensive support services to international<br />
students and faculty so that they will have a smooth transition<br />
to CMU life and a successful stay at CMU;<br />
enhances the level of international understanding among<br />
members of the CMU community by sponsoring, organizing,<br />
and developing international programs that are academically,<br />
culturally, and socially beneficial;<br />
maintains an up-to-date CMU International Education Information<br />
Clearinghouse; and<br />
remains informed of the development of international education<br />
regionally, nationally, and internationally through regularly<br />
attending conferences and meetings as well as through participation<br />
in related professional development workshops.<br />
Highlights of Services<br />
International Students<br />
Pre-arrival. New international students and visiting scholars<br />
are provided pre-arrival materials to smooth their transition to<br />
the United States and <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Admissions<br />
documents and a welcome booklet provide information on topics<br />
important to those preparing for their education in a new country<br />
and educational system. Among the subjects covered are housing,<br />
health insurance, living expenses, and F- and J- non-immigrant<br />
visa status.<br />
Airport pick-up. The OIA staff coordinates airport transportation<br />
from the Lansing (LAN) airports to campus for new international<br />
students during specified time periods just prior to the beginning<br />
of each semester.<br />
Orientation. New students and scholars report to OIA soon<br />
after their arrival to participate in an orientation program, which<br />
is designed to meet their immediate needs in terms of housing<br />
information and <strong>University</strong> registration procedures; introduces<br />
them to U.S. culture and the educational system at CMU; and<br />
provides information on banking, health insurance, safety, and<br />
F-1 and J-1 non-immigrant regulations.<br />
Other services. In addition to its advising service, OIA coordinates<br />
programs designed to help students become familiar with<br />
campus and community life.<br />
Faculty and Staff Exchanges<br />
CMU faculty and staff are encouraged to work with OIA staff<br />
when exploring and applying for international opportunities.<br />
Community Activities<br />
OIA works closely with community groups, individuals and<br />
institutions interested in international understanding and activities.<br />
It supports and/or sponsors programs that seek to respond to the<br />
international needs and interests of the community.
