opprairie.com news the orland park prairie | July 5, 2018 | 7 Man thanks Life Time employees who saved his life Jacquelyn Schlabach Assistant Editor It was the quick thinking of four Life Time employees in Orland Park that gave Mike Sanocki a second chance in a matter of 30 seconds. Sanocki, 62, suffered from cardiac arrest May 9 when he passed out after doing his 30-minute workout on the elliptical. Just 30 feet in front of where trainer Jerry Jasper was teaching a Pilates class, the Homer Glen resident fell to the ground, and the staff took immediate action. It is because of Jasper, trainer Cooper Garland, general manager Jason Fox and Ricky Cruz that Sanocki is alive today. On June 26, the four Life Time employees were recognized at the Orland Fire Protection District Board of Trustees meeting and awarded the Battalion Chief William Bonnar Sr. Citizen Life Saving Award. “I want those guys to get all the credit,” Sanocki said. “I don’t want it to be a story about me, how I survived a cardiac arrest, because that’s not a story; the story is that these guys saved my life, and I wanted them to get the attention that they deserve, and the paramedics.” When Sanocki passed out, Garland immediately got on the walkie-talkie system and asked the front desk to call 911. Afterward, Cruz grabbed an automated external defibrillator — which treats a disturbance in the heart rhythm called ventricular fibrillation — and gave it to Jasper. Using the AED, he applied electric shock to Sanocki’s chest. “The fact that they had that on me and I was shocked within 30 seconds actually saved my life and gave me a normal life again,” Sanocki said. Photo courtesy of Orland Fire Protection District the AED, Fox began giving Sanocki chest compressions. It wasn’t until the 27th compression that Sanocki regained consciousness. Fox began asking him if he knew where he was and what day it was. “I was fully conscious and lucid, so I answered all his questions,” Sanocki said. “The paramedics were there within 5 minutes [and] I found out that I had cardiac arrest.” According to Sanocki’s doctor, if the staff had taken 3 minutes to administer the first shock, he would have some sort of permanent disability as a result. “I was very lucky I had no damage to my heart, and the doctor said that’s because I do a lot of cardio and my heart was very strong,” Sanocki said. He was immediately taken to Silver Cross Hospital following the incident. There, he found out the next morning that he had three arteries that were 85 percent blocked. There was no time to waste, and Sanocki was transferred to Palos Community Hospital to prepare for a triple bypass surgery that Friday. “Every phase since my attack, every phase of the surgery, the rehabilitation in the hospital, the rehabilitation at home, every phase has gone better than would have been expected,” Sanocki said. “So, I’m just extremely lucky that people who helped me were exactly where they were, and they knew exactly what to do and how to do it.” After staying five days in the hospital following the surgery, Sanocki returned home. He spent most of his days sitting in his recliner, watching TV and slowly began to gain back his strength. “In the morning, I would go with my wife for about a half a block walk with my dog, and that was about all I could do at that point,” he said. “But then I just built myself up to a mile and then 2 miles.” Prior to his cardiac arrest, Sanocki went to Life Time 3-6 days a week to do cardio either on the elliptical or the bicycle. He has not been cleared to go back to the gym, of course, but continues to make strides on his own by walking every day and going to cardiac rehab three days a week. “I feel fantastic,” he said. “The only thing is I get tired relatively easy. After I take a walk I’m tired. By the time evening comes and I’m sitting in my recliner, I get very tired and I doze off watching TV.” His successful recovery is credited to none other than the Life Time Fitness staff. “I’ve been [to Life Time] two or three times since it happened,” Sanocki said. “The first time I saw them, it was kind of emotional. I teared up, and I mean I gave them a bear hug and I told them thank you guys so much for being where you were when I went down, and doing exactly what you were trained to do in saving my life.” He said if he had $10 million, he would not hesitate to give it to the four gentlemen who changed his life forever. He could not think of any way that would truly express how thankful he is for Garland, Fox, Jasper and Cruz, until Lt. Mark Duke at the Orland Fire Protection District called him while he was in the hospital to say that he was going to help him do just that. “We like to recognize when the public does something [outside] of what they’re expected to do,” Duke said. “You know, this is our job, as paramedics, this is what we’re trained to do. When the public acts, we recognize our guys, too. We definitely like to give these awards to our citizens.” This isn’t the first time that Life Time has been on the receiving end of this award. Last July, Fox and a couple other members of the club were recognized for saving a 53-year-old man who had cardiac arrest. “Life Time in particular has had a number of saves over the years because their staff is trained and they know what to do,” Duke said. According to Fox, Life Tim makes it a priority to have their staff AED, First Aid and CPR certified. “I think when something dramatic like that happens, we fall back on our training, and between Jerry, Cooper, Ricky and the rest of the club — because it was really an all-club response to it — we have people holding doors open, people calling 911, people directing traffic around the area,” Fox said. “I’m super proud of the team at Orland Park.” Staff members frequently do drills to prepare for any given emergency scenario that might occur at the gym. “We drill these quite frequently, because we want to make sure everybody’s ready for the scenario,” Garland said. “And to me, it just felt second-nature, because no matter what the underlying reason is ... it’s seconds at a time that you have to react.” Their training and their quick thinking earned them every bit of that Battalion Chief William Bonnar Sr. Citizen Life Saving Award. “[It feels] honestly, awesome,” Jasper said. “I got into this business to help people. Never got into this business thinking that our team, [that] I’d be involved in something where a group effort just brings somebody’s life back that wouldn’t be there if we didn’t respond.” For Fox, the award is a representation of the entire staff at Life Time and the Orland Fire Protection District. “It’s not just our team, it’s the fire department and the great relationship with them,” Fox said. “We know we can count on them in any given moment, and I think that’s what the award is more about — it’s the representation of everybody doing the thing that they were supposed to do at the time. It means a lot.” Jasper, Garland and Fox were present at the board of trustees meeting June 26 to receive their award, but Cruz was unable to attend. “We want to acknowledge this, and let as many people know as we can how important it is for people to get involved,” Duke said. “We want to acknowledge a job well-done. We also want to let people know that you really can make a difference.” At the ceremony, Sanocki had the privilege of handing the three gentlemen their awards. He spoke briefly to the audience beforehand, expressing his gratitude once again for saving his life. “I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my still beating heart,” he said at the meeting. “I just can’t thank you enough.”
