AN AETHERIC COLLECTION
CELEBRITIES AND ICONS?
PREFACE
Artists can see the world differently, exploring territories that go beyond our
sensible experiences. We have seen this during the course of the history
of art with artists delving into perception, playing with the conscious and the
unconscious, over layering space and time dimensions. Informed by
history of art, esotericism, science and spiritualism, Degard uses the potential
of art to bring a wider audience to engage with confidence to those
questions of life that seem to stay unanswered in many fields, but not all.
What stretches and goes beyond perception, the infinity of the unknown
defines our limitations as human. Visions and “other” experiences have always
been discussed and studied in all cultures and traditions. What is it that
make us strive for something “more”? Is t/here (such a thing as) the divine?
or is it an explanation of the awe-inspiring/inspiration we seek?
Being in conversation with academics and scientists, the artist has promoted
in March 2017 “The First Symposium on the Aetheric Movement” at the Royal
Society of Arts, London. Degard and other leading thinkers have explored
vital questions leading to ‘Aethericising the Curriculum’– a profound
conversation on the potential loss of both imagination, inspiration, sublime
experience in our academic curricula today. Degard initially experimented
with method and form for 15 years before arriving at her signature work
shown here. Degard has elaborated a contemporary aesthetic language
and vocabulary to re-interpret traditional forms of depiction, with portraiture
and iconography, bringing forward the alternative possible methodologies
to investigate exteroception and interoception.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Story
It all started with a blinding flash of light, or, more specifically,
spotting a blue square in front of the chest area of someone chairing
a meeting which I attended, more than 20 years ago.
I had been observing these flashes, lights, energies all my life and I could
never interpret them.
But on this day, after I had seen ‘the blue square’, my friend at the
meeting said of the chairman: ‘Isn’t it fantastic he is doing this work,
given that he has just had triple by-pass surgery!’
My ah-ha moment!
I then understood that this ‘blue square’ was the memory and
consciousness held around the body’ or what I term today ‘aetheric
energy’. The square of the aetheric energy was the surgical intervention,
the blue showed profound and massive healing and the location of the
‘blue square’ indicated where the operation had taken place thereby
affecting the aura pure.

Her aetheric energy to hook

intrigued me. I worked on
this painting for well over
a year to balance the
geometry and her aura pure.
From that point in time, I looked and looked, for knowledge anywhere,
everywhere. What I discovered is that this knowledge is mostly lost.
It is however deeply discerned by everyone, through vibe and karma;
when you meet someone it is their own aetheric energy which informs
you whether they seem to be ‘your kind of’ person.
What I came to uncover is this ‘blue square’ energy is described in
all its complexity by no one.

DEGARD - PAINTER...
LOOKING
When you are looking for knowledge, one of the good places to go
to is a university. Having gained a Masters degree in Politics
at Edinburgh University, I then decided to train at Chelsea College
of Art, London, where I was tutored in part by Terry Frost and
Virginia Verran.
Post Chelsea, I had two successful solo shows, ‘Paradise on Earth’,
at Spitalfields Gallery (1999), and ‘Money’ at the Zetland Gallery,
Shoreditch (2000).

Is her aetheric energy
different on and off
stage? She is such a
huge liberating
influence for women;
sassy, fierce but
deeply maternal.
I find her fascinating.
Engagement by the public, academies and artworld then and now
regarding aetheric content often seems uncertain. The gorgeous,
heady mix of the divine, alchemised in the arts and sciences, was
and still is taboo.
I found that:
‘Strong scepticism remains about alternative dimensions or realities
in society. Openly, people are reticent to discuss their esoteric beliefs.
Scientists disassociate their findings from aetheric thinking, whilst
most artists are keen to ignore this area of their practice.’

In light of this, my work from 2002 until very recently has been held
in secret.

SHAREHOLDERS
To counteract the taboo i.e. outdated research methods and old-fashioned
ideas, I have looked to network with like-minded individuals, not
intimidated by aetheric content. To my surprise I’ve discovered there
are thousands of people and hundreds of organisations who are in
accord with this thinking which acts lie like a counter-culture within the
mesh of society.

www.aetheric.life is dedicated to the idea that the taboo around aetheric
thinking can be broken by revealing the massive number of people working,
crediting and believing in the aetheric.
www.wikiaetheric.org is an online platform where individuals, organisations
and shareholders of aetheric life can post their research, their findings
and first-person, first-hand knowledge in the Wikipedia format –
an encyclopaedia of the aetheric.
My hope and intention with www.aetheric.life and www.wikiaetheric.org
is, through the many thousands of individuals interested in an aetheric
content, the taboo will be broken and this dialogue enter the mainstream
academic and public engagement process with the resulting boost to
dynamic creativity and innovation.

INTENT - WHY?
Celebrities
Have a magnetism
– their aura pure
creates a special kind
of energy which
makes us happy and
excites us. Even the
most dour and
sceptical of us, when
meeting a celebrity,
will ‘wake’ up.
The aetheric content –
the aura pure is where
I wish to direct the
viewer’s attention and
consequently their
imagination; to engage
with the concepts
and conversation of
this often massive
and complex aura.
David Beckham

Portraits AND READABILITY
The work is intentionally attractive, magnetic,
even beautiful. I do not want to do battle with
the portrait. I can paint portraits, but portraits
rarely ‘get’ the totality of an individual.
Portraits have their own set of battles.
Photographic portraits fit more in line with our
understanding of the image of a person.
My true intent is to move the viewer to
consideration of the aura pure of the individual
and for the viewer, to be able to really enjoy
that process.

Photos
We ‘read’ photos quickly, and so they are consumed,
potentially discarded. I want the viewer to be allowed to
grasp the image quickly and enjoy that familiarity and
knowing. People can therefore ‘get into’ my work very
quickly via the celebrity and then the engagement starts.
Once the engagement starts, one can question the
content of the work: what does this mean about the person,
what does this bright light say about this person, and
why is this celebrity so magnetic? What is their aetheric
energy revealing?

INTENT WHY?
REFERENCING art history
I work with the process of referencing knowingly, drawing on
many aspects of art across the centuries. Secret aetheric
concepts embedded in historical art works are fascinating and
also inform many of the paintings.

One of the issues which arose at the Courtauld
study day on Georgiana Houghton in 2016 was on
‘judging’ visionary art so to speak. Through the
lens of modernism and abstraction Georgiana is
almost impossible to assess - her intent was not to
experience the void or play with colour, form,
materiality etc. Through the lens of contemporary
art she doesn’t work at all - there is no overlayering
or meaning, oblique referencing - no concept
embedded but through the lens of tropos so to
speak ie how the work moves you, Georgiana’s
work is powerful. In the same way as Rothko -
the work literally knocks you off your feet
emotionally and aetherically.
My work is more cerebral - I let the viewer in through
pop culture and art history. My conversation isn’t about
foreground background, abstract space in particular
but I make significant reference to that debate. And in
between all of that reading/looking one notices all
these swirls and patterns around the body which is
where the questioning starts. What do these patterns
mean/suggest, what is the aura pure?

as it has done with many artists in the past:

Reynolds, Manet, Picasso, Warhol, Bacon…
What are these celebrities summoning to
themselves to make their worlds, their very
public worlds, real to a much wider audience?

MY VISUAL AWARENESS
as an artist, of an intangible but
vital natural space of aetheric energy
is paramount to my practice.
This aetheric energy can concentrate
around a celebrity figure in specific
patternings. The totality of this aetheric
energy makes up what I call their
‘aura pure’. Our ‘sixth sense’ knows
this vital energy as vibe – the vibration
of a person. It vibrates consistently
but holds in a position, so we know
where/who we are.

I love this painting.

DO I HAVE
a guardian angel or psychic helper of some kind?
Is this wristband, motto, word, chant
positively affecting my life? Do I get divine help?
Is there a curse from Tutankhamun? Does
the evil eye exist towards me? Am I getting affected
by psychic forces? Am I carrying bad energy/good
energy, wealth energy, do spells work, are
witches, wizards effective in harnessing this energy?
What does clever look like in terms of aetheric
energy, what does wealth look like in terms
of aetheric energy, success, racism – does it exist
in the aura pure, do I carry the sins of my father?
Are my ancestors with me? If my throat is slit
at death will heaven be denied me?
After death am I just dust in a box? What is left
of my legacy/my aura pure?
Some would say crazy questions but these are
dangerous myths/questions to leave unanswered.

event, nearly always have their
aetheric energy wrapped tightly
around their bodies.

This was a unique
moment in Ronaldo’s
history as he gets himself
into the right position
to score a vital goal for
Portugal to win a critical
match - so history stops
still. At this point in
the painting we and he
doesn’t know the
outcome of this effort
and energy. The outcome
was however positive -
a key goal was scored.
I wanted to explore that
aetheric energy which is
so tantalising and reaches
a successful outcome.

In the two images of Mo Farah
you can see that during an
incredible performance at the
winning moment of the
Olympics 2012 in Great Britain,
his aetheric energy is almost
pure white/silver and is entirely
encasing his body.
However sometime afterwards,
on the red carpet his energies
are being allowed to move away
from his body and are coloured
vibrantly. The flame above his
head, seen in many of the works
here, I believe, represents
promoting oneself.

Individuals and
their actionS
are in dynamic friction with the exposure of the media.
The celebrity, to continue to increase its centimetre position
on the ruler needs the exposure, however the exposure
itself may have a detrimental position if the celebrity is cast
in the wrong values/idealogical light.
This terrible battle is possibly the intense fear that celebrities
have of the media. However, the misconception is that
the celebrity’s battle is with the media and not the society.
Any one individual is usually powerless over the values/
ideological compass of an entire society – unless you are
a dictator. So, at any given moment the ideological fabric
of the society is shifting – the press, institutions and
authorities are not necessarily aware of this shifting tide
and constantly seek to understand it using pollsters and
surveys which are very flimsy understandings and prove at
times, catastrophically off balance.
