MOVEMENT

AN AETHERIC COLLECTION
CELEBRITIES AND ICONS?
PREFACE
Artists can see the world differently, exploring territories that go beyond our
sensible experiences. We have seen this during the course of the history
of art with artists delving into perception, playing with the conscious and the
unconscious, over layering space and time dimensions. Informed by
history of art, esotericism, science and spiritualism, Degard uses the potential
of art to bring a wider audience to engage with confidence to those
questions of life that seem to stay unanswered in many fields, but not all.
What stretches and goes beyond perception, the infinity of the unknown
defines our limitations as human. Visions and “other” experiences have always
been discussed and studied in all cultures and traditions. What is it that
make us strive for something “more”? Is t/here (such a thing as) the divine?
or is it an explanation of the awe-inspiring/inspiration we seek?
Being in conversation with academics and scientists, the artist has promoted
in March 2017 “The First Symposium on the Aetheric Movement” at the Royal
Society of Arts, London. Degard and other leading thinkers have explored
vital questions leading to ‘Aethericising the Curriculum’– a profound
conversation on the potential loss of both imagination, inspiration, sublime
experience in our academic curricula today. Degard initially experimented
with method and form for 15 years before arriving at her signature work
shown here. Degard has elaborated a contemporary aesthetic language
and vocabulary to re-interpret traditional forms of depiction, with portraiture
and iconography, bringing forward the alternative possible methodologies
to investigate exteroception and interoception.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Story
It all started with a blinding flash of light, or, more specifically,
spotting a blue square in front of the chest area of someone chairing
a meeting which I attended, more than 20 years ago.
I had been observing these flashes, lights, energies all my life and I could
never interpret them.
But on this day, after I had seen ‘the blue square’, my friend at the
meeting said of the chairman: ‘Isn’t it fantastic he is doing this work,
given that he has just had triple by-pass surgery!’
My ah-ha moment!
I then understood that this ‘blue square’ was the memory and
consciousness held around the body’ or what I term today ‘aetheric
energy’. The square of the aetheric energy was the surgical intervention,
the blue showed profound and massive healing and the location of the
‘blue square’ indicated where the operation had taken place thereby
affecting the aura pure.
and canvas, gold
(right: detail).
Amal flew onto the
celebrity scene with her
engagement to the world’s
most eligible bachelor.
Her aetheric energy to hook
the world’s best, along with
her inner radiance, really
intrigued me. I worked on
this painting for well over
a year to balance the
geometry and her aura pure.
From that point in time, I looked and looked, for knowledge anywhere,
everywhere. What I discovered is that this knowledge is mostly lost.
It is however deeply discerned by everyone, through vibe and karma;
when you meet someone it is their own aetheric energy which informs
you whether they seem to be ‘your kind of’ person.
What I came to uncover is this ‘blue square’ energy is described in
all its complexity by no one.

DEGARD - PAINTER...
LOOKING
When you are looking for knowledge, one of the good places to go
to is a university. Having gained a Masters degree in Politics
at Edinburgh University, I then decided to train at Chelsea College
of Art, London, where I was tutored in part by Terry Frost and
Virginia Verran.
Post Chelsea, I had two successful solo shows, ‘Paradise on Earth’,
at Spitalfields Gallery (1999), and ‘Money’ at the Zetland Gallery,
Shoreditch (2000).
Beyoncé Performing
A great Beyoncé pose
with her front, and rear
showing together, with
her on stage here.
This is the second
painting in this series
on Beyoncé (see gallery
section at end of book
and The First Book
of Aethericism).
Is her aetheric energy
different on and off
stage? She is such a
huge liberating
influence for women;
sassy, fierce but
deeply maternal.
I find her fascinating.
Engagement by the public, academies and artworld then and now
regarding aetheric content often seems uncertain. The gorgeous,
heady mix of the divine, alchemised in the arts and sciences, was
and still is taboo.
I found that:
‘Strong scepticism remains about alternative dimensions or realities
in society. Openly, people are reticent to discuss their esoteric beliefs.
Scientists disassociate their findings from aetheric thinking, whilst
most artists are keen to ignore this area of their practice.’
The First Book of Aethericism
In light of this, my work from 2002 until very recently has been held
in secret.
I didn’t want the
classic red-carpet
photo of this A-list
couple but instead
wanted the family
‘authentic’ pose.
Here they are playing
in an activity park.
It was not long after
I completed this
painting (having
taken a year and a
half to complete it)
they split up –
which is why there
is a line in-between
the two halves.

...
SHAREHOLDERS
To counteract the taboo i.e. outdated research methods and old-fashioned
ideas, I have looked to network with like-minded individuals, not
intimidated by aetheric content. To my surprise I’ve discovered there
are thousands of people and hundreds of organisations who are in
accord with this thinking which acts lie like a counter-culture within the
mesh of society.
But she keeps
going and her
aetheric energy
is so vibrant
and thrilling.
www.aetheric.life is dedicated to the idea that the taboo around aetheric
thinking can be broken by revealing the massive number of people working,
crediting and believing in the aetheric.
www.wikiaetheric.org is an online platform where individuals, organisations
and shareholders of aetheric life can post their research, their findings
and first-person, first-hand knowledge in the Wikipedia format –
an encyclopaedia of the aetheric.
My hope and intention with www.aetheric.life and www.wikiaetheric.org
is, through the many thousands of individuals interested in an aetheric
content, the taboo will be broken and this dialogue enter the mainstream
academic and public engagement process with the resulting boost to
dynamic creativity and innovation.

WHAT IS THE AETHERIC?
The aetheric is everything
which has a touch of the
divine, within any discipline
including the arts, sciences
and medicine, or even
personal experiences.
INTENT - WHY?
Celebrities
Have a magnetism
– their aura pure
creates a special kind
of energy which
makes us happy and
excites us. Even the
most dour and
sceptical of us, when
meeting a celebrity,
will ‘wake’ up.
The aetheric content –
the aura pure is where
I wish to direct the
viewer’s attention and
consequently their
imagination; to engage
with the concepts
and conversation of
this often massive
and complex aura.
David Beckham
with Brooklyn and
Romeo
aura pure
– oil on wood with
gold, silver leaf,
marcasite,
160 x 110 cm, 2017.
One of our great
British exports.
David has had such
an amazing football
career and is a warm
kind-hearted man too.
This painting was
inspired by the myth of
Phaeton, the drawing
‘The Fall of Phaeton’ by
Michelangelo and
also ‘The fall of Phaeton’
by Johann Liss.

Portraits AND READABILITY
The work is intentionally attractive, magnetic,
even beautiful. I do not want to do battle with
the portrait. I can paint portraits, but portraits
rarely ‘get’ the totality of an individual.
Portraits have their own set of battles.
Photographic portraits fit more in line with our
understanding of the image of a person.
My true intent is to move the viewer to
consideration of the aura pure of the individual
and for the viewer, to be able to really enjoy
that process.
Elton John and
David Furnish
aura pure
– oil on canvas,
gold leaf,
60 x 90 cm, 2015.
An Iconic British
couple. I met Elton
twice; when he was
both very shy and
humble and then as
‘rocket man’ full of
bravado on stage.
I wondered what the
aetheric energies
of this couple would
look like.
A golden background
just seemed right.

Photos
We ‘read’ photos quickly, and so they are consumed,
potentially discarded. I want the viewer to be allowed to
grasp the image quickly and enjoy that familiarity and
knowing. People can therefore ‘get into’ my work very
quickly via the celebrity and then the engagement starts.
Once the engagement starts, one can question the
content of the work: what does this mean about the person,
what does this bright light say about this person, and
why is this celebrity so magnetic? What is their aetheric
energy revealing?
Eva Longoria
and Jose Baston
aura pure
– oil on wood,
gold leaf,
110 x 100 cm, 2017
(right: detail).
We asked Eva for a
favourite picture
of herself and she gave
me this amazing one
on her wedding day,
looking so happy in her
Victoria Beckham
wedding dress
surrounded by friends
and family. I created a
type of lush, almost
rampant Impressionist
garden area which fills
the space beyond
the couples’
aetheric energies.

INTENT WHY?
REFERENCING art history
I work with the process of referencing knowingly, drawing on
many aspects of art across the centuries. Secret aetheric
concepts embedded in historical art works are fascinating and
also inform many of the paintings.
Geri Haliwell
aura pure
– oil on acetate
and canvas,
gold leaf,
40 x 50 cm, 2017.
This painting has
become intriguing!
I loved the Spice
Girls, girl power and
the fun they brought
to the pop scene.
I am a big fan of Geri.
What I loved here
was the relationship
between the girls;
eyes right eyes left.
And Nick Ede, my
PR agent, is in the
painting too while
Victoria Beckham
is off to the side, out
of the shot!

...
One of the issues which arose at the Courtauld
study day on Georgiana Houghton in 2016 was on
‘judging’ visionary art so to speak. Through the
lens of modernism and abstraction Georgiana is
almost impossible to assess - her intent was not to
experience the void or play with colour, form,
materiality etc. Through the lens of contemporary
art she doesn’t work at all - there is no overlayering
or meaning, oblique referencing - no concept
embedded but through the lens of tropos so to
speak ie how the work moves you, Georgiana’s
work is powerful. In the same way as Rothko -
the work literally knocks you off your feet
emotionally and aetherically.
My work is more cerebral - I let the viewer in through
pop culture and art history. My conversation isn’t about
foreground background, abstract space in particular
but I make significant reference to that debate. And in
between all of that reading/looking one notices all
these swirls and patterns around the body which is
where the questioning starts. What do these patterns
mean/suggest, what is the aura pure?
Gwyneth Paltrow
aura pure
– oil on acetate
and wood, gold leaf,
69 x 54 cm, 2016
(right: detail).
Gwyneth is an A-lister,
an always in our
attention superstar
who has taken a bit
of derision for having
shown her true self.
This painting took me
nearly 2 years of
building and recreating
to make it really glow.

DESIRE to explore
The sparkle around stars peaks my curiosity
as it has done with many artists in the past:
Holbein, van Dyck, Rembrandt, Gainsborough,
Reynolds, Manet, Picasso, Warhol, Bacon…
What are these celebrities summoning to
themselves to make their worlds, their very
public worlds, real to a much wider audience?
Richard Branson
aura pure
– oil on canvas,
80 x 120 cm, 2017.
I was intrigued by the
images of Richard
Branson always looking
fully relaxed, almost
angel-like, a superman
and an everyman but
not a traditional
business man. And yet
here is one of the most
successful men in
the UK currently. The
background inspired
by ‘Keelmen Heaving
Coals by Midnight’ by
J M W Turner reflects
the genuine truth; hard
work! His aura pure
shows this build up of
created aetheric
energies into material
forms also.

AURA
PURE =
billions of captured
emotions
& your breath
& your experiences
& hopes & wishes
& obsessions & tragedies =
our ‘a priori’ knowledge
retained in this energy
form around, and in, the
physical body.
Cameron Diaz
aura pure
– oil on acetate
and canvas,
80 x 60 cm, 2015.
Cameron, the
Hollywood beauty
and bright dynamic
woman, inspired me
to create this painting.
I love strong women
who really want to
create a big persona
for themselves on the
world stage.
Cheryl
aura pure
– oil on canvas
and wood,
52 x 34 cm, 2014.
She just looked so
sweet in an ad I saw,
that it inspired me
to create this piece.
Her aetheric energy
just tumbled and
created itself – more
and more and more.
I just think she is
permanently gorgeous,
smiling through all
her ups and downs.

...
The aura pure is the
complex aura which is
your memory, your
consciousness around you
– your thoughts, your
beliefs, your actions and
the aetheric energies
influencing you,
throughout your life.
Kylie
aura pure
– oil on wood,
gold leaf,
27 x 21 cm, 2014.
I wanted to see the
difference between
Kylie’s aetheric
energy on and off
stage (see gallery
section at end of
book and The First
Book of Aethericism).
Kylie fascinates
me too as the girl
who rose from an
Australian TV series
to sensational fame
and is a bombshell
of determination –
incredible.
Jamie Oliver
aura pure
– oil on acetate
and wood,
35 x 28 cm, 2008.
It is a lovely
image of Jamie
carrying his baby
in a pouch - the
well-known chef
just out and about!
His aetheric energy
is extraordinary -
nearly all green
which I assume is
his intense creativity.
Sickert in Dieppetype
stylisation for
this painting.

...
The aura
pure reveals
your wealth,
your strengths,
your desiring –
Passion.
Kate Middleton
aura pure
– oil on paper and
wood, gold,
silver leaf,
60 x 40 cm, 2015.
This painting just
emerged – a blast of
aetheric energy with
multiple folds of
people and children
folded into her future.
The photograph was
taken in 2012 before
she was the Duchess
of Cambridge we
know her to be today.
She showed so much
activity and happenings
in her aetheric energy
for the future.
Prince William
aura pure
– oil on cardboard
and wood,
gold leaf,
40 x 40 cm, 2016.
This is an early
painting when
I worked with just
the portrait and
the abstracted
aetheric energy
but with no form
of the body.
I loved this image of
Prince William
on tour in the
South Pacific, being
decorated with
flowers. I retained the
Royal side profile.

...
The aura pure
surrounds an individual,
is part of an individual
and is created
by that individual.
The aura pure is
developed from birth
throughout life.
The aura pure is the
totality of a person’s
aetheric energy.
Rachel Stevens
aura pure
– oil on paper
and wood,
43 x 28 cm, 2008.
My family were happily
having dinner one night
in 2008 in London when
a gang fight broke out in
the restaurant.
My mother was an inch
from being shot in the
head (she was fine :-)).
As the song goes ‘you
might not get tomorrow’!
Rachel Stevens was in
the restaurant at the same
time which is why she
caught my attention.
This painting is an early,
abstracted aura pure.
Madonna
aura pure
– oil on acetate and
canvas, gold leaf,
64 x 30 cm, 2014.
I love this classic pose -
so dynamic and sexy.
(Referencing Warhol’s
Elvis pose and the
Sid Vicious’ by Gavin
Turk.) This painting
is literally alive and
breathes ‘dorian grey’
- like with Madonna’s
aetheric energy. The
golden wings revealed
a bull in their shaping -
sometimes it sparkles,
sometimes it doesn’t.

WHAT IS THE
AETHERIC
ENERGY
DESCRIBING?
Justin Bieber
aura pure
– oil on canvas,
80 x 120 cm, 2016.
Justin fascinates
me because of his
youth and charm
and how his teen-life
and youth have
been splashed all
over the press.
I wondered what
created such a young
superstar talent
and how he held
onto himself – what
his aetheric energy
looked like.

Notions of the
The Three Graces
have infused art
for centuries.
I worked on Kate
Moss only because
compositionally to
attempt to recreate
on a flat surface
multiple aura pure
would look chaotic.
Kate at the time was
also involved in her
own art shows and
talk of her ‘golden’
almost lucky status
were being discussed.
AETHERIC ENERGY =
MYSTICAL ENERGY

...
Some aspects of aetheric energy
can be interpreted and read.
Mostly however the interpretation
of the energy is only truly obvious
to that person.
Leah Weller
aura pure
– oil on wood,
gold leaf,
17 x 10 cm, 2014.
I just loved the
fresh beauty of
Leah - full of
energy and fun!
This is her in
a bar on a celeb
night out!
Kelly Brook
aura pure
– oil on paper
and wood,
60 x 40 cm, 2015.
The ad that Kelly was
in just caught my eye.
The ‘model sitting’ is
a more unusual pose
for me to use.
I created a very lush
environment around
her. Her aura pure
turned out so prettily -
this part of the work is
never predictable.

MY VISUAL AWARENESS
as an artist, of an intangible but
vital natural space of aetheric energy
is paramount to my practice.
This aetheric energy can concentrate
around a celebrity figure in specific
patternings. The totality of this aetheric
energy makes up what I call their
‘aura pure’. Our ‘sixth sense’ knows
this vital energy as vibe – the vibration
of a person. It vibrates consistently
but holds in a position, so we know
where/who we are.
Essay by Degard on ‘Aetheric Energy:
The Intangible Source of Human Celebrity’ In
‘Human Arenas’ published by Springer Press.
Pippa Middleton
aura pure
– oil on paper, wood,
31 x 12 cm, 2015
(right: detail).
It seems Pippa has
had so much publicity
because of Kate but
Pippa is pretty racey
in her own right.
Her dynamism and her
rise to fame intrigued
me. It caught my
attention and inspired
me to create this piece.

AN ICON
is a narrative
of an
individual
which is
Coco Chanel
aura pure
– oil on wood,
31 x 33 cm, 2016.
I have been on the
hunt for true icons
and Coco Chanel
seems to embody
this; an extraordinary
life and she has
left a huge legacy.
The celebrity,
I assume, always
wants to become the
icon. Artists always
strive to be the iconic
artist of their time.
Coco was a powerful
influencer, designer,
business woman
and ultra cool.

...
An icon leaves a legacy in things,
in materiality and by implication leaves
a legacy as aetheric energy.
Elvis Presley
aura pure
– oil on paper
and wood,
24 x 16cm, 2015
(left: detail).
The King of
Rock and Roll -
what more
is there to say?!
I have produced
two paintings of
Elvis (see gallery
section at end of
book) to configure
how his aetheric
energy adapted
from his youth
to his later years.
I wondered what
twists arrived in
his energy which
determined his
incredibly sad
demise and death.

An icon to me
- that incredible
sophistication
of the era.
Loved this image
and couldn’t
resist doing the
painting of her.
...
“The spiritual part of a person
that some people believe
continues to exist in some
form after their body has died,
or the part of a person that
is not physical and experiences
deep feelings and emotions.”
Definition of the’ soul’
from Cambridge English Dictionary
The aura pure could be the
soul. It fits the definition.
If the aura pure is the soul
then can the aura pure
provide soul history?

...
Does the aura pure
linger after death?
In what form?
Peaches Geldof
aura pure
– oil on paper
and wood,
17 x 11 cm, 2015
(left: detail).
Peaches’ story still
saddens me.
Born to the famous
Bob Geldof and Paula
Yates and thrown into
the limelight -
but could she cope?
Like many she decided
to go for oblivion
in drugs and ended up
overdosing. You can
actually see a needle in
her aura pure. I feel sad
too for Bob Geldof -
she was cherishable.
I love this painting.

DO I HAVE
a guardian angel or psychic helper of some kind?
Is this wristband, motto, word, chant
positively affecting my life? Do I get divine help?
Is there a curse from Tutankhamun? Does
the evil eye exist towards me? Am I getting affected
by psychic forces? Am I carrying bad energy/good
energy, wealth energy, do spells work, are
witches, wizards effective in harnessing this energy?
What does clever look like in terms of aetheric
energy, what does wealth look like in terms
of aetheric energy, success, racism – does it exist
in the aura pure, do I carry the sins of my father?
Are my ancestors with me? If my throat is slit
at death will heaven be denied me?
After death am I just dust in a box? What is left
of my legacy/my aura pure?
Some would say crazy questions but these are
dangerous myths/questions to leave unanswered.
Elizabeth Taylor
aura pure
– oil on wood,
gold leaf, emeralds
40 x 60 cm, 2016.
Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra
- the wonderful glow of
technicolour film are truly
gorgeous reminders.
Elizabeth Taylor, both a
magnificent and tragic
figure during her lifetime,
is now becoming a faded
icon. Here, she lives on
magnificently!

ELITE ATHLETES
whilst they are playing a match,
race, or any serious sporting
event, nearly always have their
aetheric energy wrapped tightly
around their bodies.
Ronaldo
aura pure
– oil on canvas,
30 x 50 cm, 2016.
This was a unique
moment in Ronaldo’s
history as he gets himself
into the right position
to score a vital goal for
Portugal to win a critical
match - so history stops
still. At this point in
the painting we and he
doesn’t know the
outcome of this effort
and energy. The outcome
was however positive -
a key goal was scored.
I wanted to explore that
aetheric energy which is
so tantalising and reaches
a successful outcome.

...
In the two images of Mo Farah
you can see that during an
incredible performance at the
winning moment of the
Olympics 2012 in Great Britain,
his aetheric energy is almost
pure white/silver and is entirely
encasing his body.
However sometime afterwards,
on the red carpet his energies
are being allowed to move away
from his body and are coloured
vibrantly. The flame above his
head, seen in many of the works
here, I believe, represents
promoting oneself.
Individuals and
their actionS
are in dynamic friction with the exposure of the media.
The celebrity, to continue to increase its centimetre position
on the ruler needs the exposure, however the exposure
itself may have a detrimental position if the celebrity is cast
in the wrong values/idealogical light.
This terrible battle is possibly the intense fear that celebrities
have of the media. However, the misconception is that
the celebrity’s battle is with the media and not the society.
Any one individual is usually powerless over the values/
ideological compass of an entire society – unless you are
a dictator. So, at any given moment the ideological fabric
of the society is shifting – the press, institutions and
authorities are not necessarily aware of this shifting tide
and constantly seek to understand it using pollsters and
surveys which are very flimsy understandings and prove at
times, catastrophically off balance.
Prince Harry
aura pure
– oil on canvas,
68 x 89 cm, 2017.
This piece started as
a dynamic drawing of
Harry when he was
set to marry Cressida;
essentially this
now stands as history!

...
...The packaged story appears
“they have very little going for them
and they have ‘gone viral’.
This ‘story-line’ is a created one
since the truth is their fame is
a consequence of very hard work.
...The story behind this story
(of easy fame) is one of fantasy
achievement – a life where we
wiggle our nose and achievement
occurs magically as in ‘Bewitched’!
We adore this narrative.
Kim Kardashian
and Kanye West
aura pure
– oil on canvas, gold leaf,
silver leaf, sapphires,
120 x 120cm, 2018.
This was at their
wedding where they
went to huge effort to
create a flower wall
behind them. They must
love cream flower walls.
The problem with
flowers walls are they
do not photograph well.
I have spent probably
1.5 years making this
piece so that it shows
genuine flowers painted
against Kim’s aura pure
which wraps tightly
around Kanye’s ♥.

Rhianna and Prince
Harry aura pure
– oil on acetate and
paper,
10 x 12 cm, 2017.
This drawing is part
of a series inspired by
Ellsworth Kelly, to
reference the sublime.
Rhianna is a superstar
and I loved the
dynamic between the
very different
personalities both
walking together.
...
My paintings question what does
the aetheric energy of great,
perceived success, fame, depth of
character, overdose, excess,
invention, huge intellect, extreme
happiness, or moments just
before the crucial goal or just after,
look like?
What energies do people
need to create, are free to create
to become who they are?

FREE WILL
The aura pure
settles the historical
dialogue of free will.
Are we free to choose?
Answer: yes
Are we constrained?
Answer: yes
by our own creation of
aetheric energy.
From the press we know
Nicole has had some
severe ups and downs
herself as in control and
serene - so fascinating.

A NEW ART
HISTORY
COMING SOON...
Pamela Anderson
Now
aura pure
- oil on wood,
acetate and paper,
45 x 10cm, 2015.
A starlet from the
TV programme
Baywatch, Pamela
has kept her profile
relevant keeping
hold of media
attention. I was
intrigued to discover
the changes in her
aetheric energy from
Baywatch to today.
“the artwork then reminds us of our own higher
possibilities, our own deepest nature, our own most
profound ground,”
– Ken Wilber
“Visionary art is beautiful for the truths it reveals and
is not just art for art’s sake. Transrational luminous
forms of the divine imagination portrayed in art can
introduce viewers (or may confirm for them) their
own spiritual worlds.”
TROPOLOGICAL
“The term tropological is the mode with which
the soul turns to see itself, hence tropos in Greek,
meaning to turn. Having been awakened and
moved from the literal and allegorical levels, the
tropological deepens meaning.
As the soul awakens in consciousness, it begins
to see the truth beneath surface representation.
Hidden parts of the psyche are revealed and
uncovered, and the oscillation between text/image
and reader/viewer moves towards participation
where the separation between subject/ object
begins to dissolve.”
Ringo Starr
His extraordinary life
and continuing
youth and dynamism
intrigued me and
I was curious to see
what his aetheric
energy looked like.
It shows he’s very
contained while
maintaining a real
presence.

...
“There is a division emerging in the art world today which
clears the ground between modern and contemporary art and
a new art – Degard is calling aetheric art.
This division is clarified by the division between materialist/
objectivist work based on a 3rd Person analysis and
Euclidean rectilinear geometry, materialist focus.
The new art speaks of a more sensitive awareness of our
human vitality, our divine within and without and recognizes
ourselves as being from within, reflecting on ourselves
(1st P, 2nd P perception). For me that work feels more like home.”
