Welcome to our summer issue – the last one of the school 

year! We are delighted to be able to help you make the most 

of the coming summer months with our suggestions for all 

sorts of local activities and events. This is such a wonderful 

time of year, and the perfect time to get outdoors! 

Our What’s On Where pages will help you fill your calendar 

to keep the kids busy and give you loads of opportunities to 

make family memories together. Many of our suggestions 

are free or low cost, meaning it’s even easier to plan the 

kids’ activities over the long summer break. We’ve got 

everything from Family Crafts at the Arnold Library on 12 

July to the Glow Worm Family Festival on the 18 – 19th 

August. Make sure to check out our Box Office section too 

to see what your local theatres have on this summer that 

the whole family can enjoy.

Education forWellbeing 

For the first time the Anna Freud 

National Centre for Children and 

Families has been commissioned 

by the Department for Education to 

deliver an innovative new project 

that aims to evaluate emerging and 

progressive ways of supporting 

the wellbeing and mental health 

of children in school. Participating 

primary schools will take part in a 

two-year long research programme, 

from 2018 to 2020, to evaluate and 

subsequently put in place arange 

of mental health interventions for 

children. 

For primary school children in 

years four and five, the trial aims to 

provide pupils with emotional selfawareness 

and self-management 

skills, and schools will be given 

one of four focuses: mindfulness, 

relaxation, protective behaviours, 

and measurement-only. Over the 

two years, questionnaires will be 

conducted with both pupils and 

teachers to measure whether 

mental health and wellbeing 

improves over time.

Clean Air Day 2018 

Clean Air Day is anationwide 

campaign that took place across the 

UK on 21 June, aiming to improve 

public understanding of air pollution, 

further awareness of how air pollution 

affects our health, and highlight some 

of the easy things we can all do to 

tackle air pollution. 

Research shows that air pollution 

has such adetrimental effect on our 

health it is comparable to smoking. As children’s lungs are still developing, 

they can be more susceptible than adults to the damage air pollution can 

cause. Therefore, the annual Clean Air Day is apositive opportunity for 

schools, communities, hospitals, businesses and authorities to get involved 

and take part in furthering awareness of the issue and practical solutions 

we can implement into our daily lives.

Updated travel support system 

for young people 

Independent Travel Training (ITT) is aservice provided by Nottingham City 

Council that offers young people with disabilities and special educational 

needs training to enable them to travel around the city more independently 

and safely. The scheme not only aims to provide practical support to 

improve the pupils’ mobility, but also to increase their confidence, social 

skills, and allow them to take part in more local activities. The Highway 

Code, traffic safety, public transport, managing money, how to use 

timetables and visual aids, personal safety, and how to find help are just 

some of the topics young people learn through this service. 

Previously, ITT was provided on an individual basis by referral, but now 

Nottingham City Council have updated the service by training local schools 

and colleges to be able to deliver ITT themselves, therefore greatly 

increasing the number of young people that will benefit.

ANew Literacy Scheme in Nottingham 

An exciting drive to boost literacy 

levels began in April, as work 

began on a National Literacy 

Trust Hub that has now been 

established in Nottingham. 

National Literacy Trust Hubs work 

at a community level to improve 

low literacy rates that negatively 

impact people’s lives by working 

with local partners to create long 

lasting change. The Hub will 

encompass a range of projects 

and initiatives to give young 

people the literacy skills they need 

to succeed in life. 

Nottingham is the latest city 

to join the list of national existing 

Hubs, due to a partnership 

between the National Literacy 

Trust, Nottingham City Council, 

and Small Steps Big Changes, 

and the launch day was a huge 

success. A literacy-themed bus 

tour of local primary schools 

took place, stopping at five 

locations where pupils enjoyed a 

performance by local interactive 

music workshop providers 

Rainbow Stripes, who inspired the 

children to enjoy books and share 

stories with their families.

Proud palace’s charity 

partnership prospers… 

Mansfield Palace Theatre and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice share similar 

aims. Both are places filled with laughter and love, giving families the chance 

to relax, take abreak and have fun. They are extremely proud that working 

together in partnership has seen over £33,000 raised from bucket collections 

at panto performances during the past six years, with that amount set to grow 

further this Christmas when volunteers will once again be taking donations 

from customers after they have seen Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. 

Community Fundraiser Melanie Rose told us: “At the hospice, staff make 

sure that every child in their care feels happy, relaxed and stimulated. We 

surround everyone with love and laughter. It costs more than four million 

pounds to run Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice each year, providing 

support both at the hospice and in the community. We are so grateful to 

Mansfield Palace Theatre for allowing us to do bucket collections during 

panto season as it helps towards us making more memories for the 250 

children we care for.” 

Comedian, magician and all round funny man Adam Moss, who is returning 

to the Leeming Street venue for the fourth time this Christmas due to 

overwhelming public demand, is full of praise for the work of the local Bluebell 

Wood volunteers (pictured), telling us: “I have got to know the volunteers from 

Bluebell Wood quite well since 2014 when Iwas first here for panto, so it’s 

great to see their familiar faces and the amazing work they continue to do for 

children in the local community and their families. For me, meeting people 

like them and the families the hospice care for is why I get out of bed every 

morning and do the job Ido–ifIcan make just one person smile each day 

with my performances, then it’s been agood day!”

Swimming pool safety 

Each year, millions of Britons jet 

off to sunnier climes and stay in 

accommodation with swimming pools. 

It is essential to consider a number of 

factors when booking your holiday to 

ensure you keep your children safe 

around the water. 

• Before you go away consider enrolling 

your children in swimming lessons to 

help them learn this life-saving skill 

• Check pool safety arrangements for 

where you’re staying in advance. For 

example, check if your accommodation 

has alifeguard on •duty at all times 

• Be cautious about booking private 

villas that don’t have safety fencing – 

young children are curious and can 

easily wander off and jump in to an

• While you’re away:
