The 2008 Leadership Bitterroot Class will host the Ravalli
County Fair Parade to be held on Wednesday, August 27. The
parade begins promptly at 10 a.m. and the theme this year is
‘Moovin’ ON’.
This year when you register your entry you have a choice!
You can register the same as you have always done OR
you can pay a $10 entry fee, which will give you a chance
to win a 50/50 ‘Split the Pot’.
Each category will have a chance to win a ‘Split the Pot’ -
only one (1) ‘Split the Pot’ per category will be awarded. Monies in each
category will vary, depending on how many actually pay the $10 entry fee for each category.
Those who pay the $10 entry fee, will still
be judged for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbons
overall. All proceeds support the Leadership
Bitterroot program.
Sign-ups are being taken at the Chamber
office at 105 East Main in Hamilton. You
must come in to register and pick up your
number to be eligible for judging. This year’s
Grand Marshall is Rob Johnson.

Community Enrichment
Grant Program . . .
In support of our many communities and in furtherance of the
Mission Statement of the Bitterroot Valley Chamber of Commerce,
hereinafter referred to as the “Chamber”, the Board of Directors
does hereby adopt and issue the following policy forthwith:
Inclusive of each annual “Chamber” membership dues received,
a portion of those monies shall be dedicated to a Community Enrichment
Grant (CEG) fund. Said monies shall be segregated from
the “Chamber” general account and reserved for community enrichment
projects and/or events occurring within the designated areas
of coverage of the “Chamber”.
At the close of business of each calendar year, a letter will be
released to the local newspapers announcing the availability of Community
Enrichment Grant (CEG) funds for the following year. In
addition, each city/town within the area of coverage will be contacted
to announce the availability of “CEG” funds. Requests for
funds from the “Chamber” shall be in writing and identify the intended
use of funds for the betterment of the town/area. Upon acceptance
of the written request, the “Chamber” shall respond accordingly
and arrange for presentation of said funds at a pre-arranged
meeting. In the event a grant request is not received from a
particular town/area, then those allocated funds shall be returned to
the segregated “CEG” reserve account of the “Chamber”.
The Executive Board and the Executive Director reserve the sole
right of discretionary approval and disbursement of all “CEG” funds
in behalf of the “Chamber”. Once a pre-determined amount of grant
funds has been issued for a particular town/area, no further allocations
shall be considered for that area until the following year.
The above policy statement was duly moved, seconded and unanimously
accepted by the Board of Directors of the Bitterroot Chamber
of Commerce during the regularly scheduled board meeting of
July 15, 2008. Chamber will begin taking applications January 2009.

content, I can’t help but
comment on the breadth of
venues and activities your
Chamber routinely participates
and supports. Since we
last communicated in the
June 2008 issue, and in keeping with my pledge to reach out to
our communities valley wide, we have extended a helping
hand by volunteering for Chief Victor Days, Stevensville
Western Heritage Days, Hamilton July 4 th Parade, Treasure
State Art Show, Sr. Pro Rodeo, Marcus Daly Memorial
Hospital * Emergency Dept Grand Opening, Daly Days,
Stevensville Annual Creamery Picnic, numerous Ribbon
Cuttings and several other business Grand Openings – just to
name a few! Yes, these are busy times in the Bitterroot.
To date, we are witnessing a very modest decline in tourist
visitations; however, it is beginning to look like our state’s
international travelers have indeed discovered our valley. This
type of ecotourist is highly sought as they tend to truly
appreciate the beauty of our rural settings, our way of life and
they and leave very little trace of their having visited……..
Inserted in this newsletter, you will find a Chamber Board of
Director “Policy Statement” that I am proud to have coauthored.
This policy position reflects the intent of the
Chamber board to render valley wide community assistance
fairly and equitably. The funds disperse from this program are
funds derived from your supporting membership dues, as
opposed to, any outside or governmental entity funding. Your
Chamber is a non-profit entity and is reliant upon its strong
membership support and fundraising efforts.
In closing, you can rest assured that your Chamber is well
and intently minding the store. Please do not hesitate to stop
by for some new travel brochure releases, general information
for your vacation plans or just to say “hello” - YOU are always
welcome at YOUR Chamber!

Money for BR Youth Homes
Join forces with Discovery Care Centre to raise money for Bitterroot
Youth Homes. The residents of Discovery Care Centre and the
residents of Bitterroot Youth Homes will be baking home-made
cookies that you can bid on in a silent auction. The bidding will
begin Monday, August 11th and will continue until Friday, August
15th when the cookies will be baked and picked up. Only the top 12
bidders will win, so bid high! Call Kay at 363-0619 to place your
bid. All proceeds will go directly to Bitterroot Youth Homes to buy
much needed supplies.
Christmas Ornament
Christmas is coming! What better gift than a
Capitol Christmas Collectors Ball! This beautiful red glass
ball features the 2008 Capitol Chrismtas Tree logo. The Capitol
Christmas Tree will be lit the first week in December in Washington.
‘The Tree’ has already been selected and this year will come
from our own Bitterroot National Forest! The cost is $8 for one
(1) or two (2) for $15 - so stop by the Chamber office and pick
one up today - it is a memory that will last a lifetime!
Taxpayer
Many tax questions are easily
resolved with a call or letter to
the Internal Revenue Service.
But some problems are more involved.
That’s where the Taxpayer
Advocate Service (TAS)
can help.
TAX is an independent organization
with the IRS who assist
taxpayers who are seeking help
in resolving tax problems that
have not been resolved through
normal channels or who believe
that an IRS system or procedure
is not working as it should.
Taxpayers may be eligible for
TAS assistance if: 1) They are
experiencing economic harm or
significant cost. 2) They have experienced
a delay of more than
30 days to resolve their tax is-
sue or 3) They have not received
a response or resolution to the
problem by the date that was
promised by the IRS. The service
is free, confidential, and available
for businesses as well as individuals.
There is at least one
local Taxpayer Advocate in each
state. Advocates know the tax
system and how to navigate it. If
you qualify, you will receive personalized
service from a knowledgeable
Advocate.

Summer is finally here! I have enjoyed meeting a lot of you
these past two months, and look
forward to meeting even more of
you.
I must admit as Membership
and Sales Director I have learned
a lot about what is going on in
our valley. One of the most
common complaints I hear from
small business owners is the high
cost of advertising. As the old
saying goes “Advertise when
things are good, Advertise when
things are so-so, Advertise when
things are bad”. Well one of the best advertising values in the
Bitterroot Valley is The Bitterroot Valley Chamber of Commerce.
Just look at this newsletter that you are reading. You would be
surprised how inexpensive the advertising rates are for this
publication, and this publication goes to all six hundred plus
(600+) members. Did you know that you can insert a flyer in this
publication for only $75? How about offering a discount to fellow
Chamber members, or giving a heads up for a special sale you
plan on running.
A project that is very dear to me, and quite successful, is our
banner ad program. I cannot emphasize enough to you how great
a business tool this is. The Bitterroot Valley Chamber of Commerce
web site has gone through somewhat of a remodeling
phase, thanks to the very capable work of Pat Easley, and we now
are up and running full steam ahead. You must visit our web site.
Simply go to www.bvchamber.com and click on the “Business
Directory”, then pick a category. Look at the banner ads on the
landing page, they all go to individual web sites or well designed
profile pages. At the bottom of the landing page is a place for you
to click on for additional listings. Now, I ask you where do you
want to be, on the front landing page or on the second or third
page with all of the additional listings?
Finally, if you are going to be at the Ravalli County Fair this
year, please stop by the Bitterroot Valley Chamber of Commerce
Booth. That’s right, we are having a booth! It will be my pleasure
to promote to all of the visitors to the fair - your business. It will
be the big kickoff of our “Shop Local, Keep The Loot In The
Bitterroot” program. I will be personally handing out thousands
of brochures instructing people on how easy it is to shop on the
Chamber’s web site. Among other things that we will be doing at
this booth is actively recruiting new members; business people
just like you who care not only about their business, but also
about their community and the environment in which we do
business. See you at the fair!

Chamber Presidents Report . .

To continue with your Bitterroot Valley Chamber of Commerce’s effort to evaluate what
are we doing well and what can we improve upon for the benefit of our membership, I’d
like to keep you current with Leadership Bitterroot. This is a dynamic program sponsored
by our Chamber and through each year’s graduating class it changes in an effort to
maintain its purpose. Each year’s graduating class has the responsibility to plan and organize
the next year’s sessions, which makes it an ever growing program.
The current Leadership Bitterroot graduates are doing just that and have come up with
some progressive changes for the new class. The first change is reworking the mission
statement into a mantra: ‘Helping Build Community Leaders’. The major change that is
being incorporated into this coming year includes restructuring the monthly sessions in
order to spend more time in each of our individual communities from Sula to Missoula.
These sessions will include an Orientation/Retreat; three (3) Hamilton sessions; a
Stevensville/Florence session; a Darby/Conner session; a Corvallis/Victor session; a day
at the Montana State Capital during the legislature; a Missoula session which will include
a joint meeting with the Missoula Leadership program; and of course, an Ending Retreat
to include graduation and planning for the next year. Each session will include the topics
that have traditionally been a session: History & Culture; Business on the Move; Economics
& Labor; Government & Politics; Human Services & Education; Law Enforcement;
Transportation & Communication and Natural Resources.
In addition, this year’s graduates are eager to form an Alumni Leadership Bitterroot
program to partner activities and create an opportunity for continued leadership seminars
and discussion themes. There will be opportunities for Alumni to participate in some of
the sessions; specifically, insuring that we send a full bus to Helena to access our state
government. In order to help fund some of these activities, which will include increased
travel, the Leadership Bitterroot graduates suggested not increasing the cost of this program,
but marketing the benefits in order to insure the class is full. Because most of the
valley doesn’t realize that the Leadership Bitterroot graduates are the organizers of our
annual Fair Parade, there will be a choice for Parade entrants this year. Groups or individuals
who want to participate in competing for a ribbon and cash prize in their category
will pay $10.
Leadership Bitterroot is an exciting program and benefits those who participate by learning
not only about our ever changing valley’s programs, issues and potential, but also provides
an opportunity to network with other businesses. It is my hope that all graduates find
ways to use their leadership abilities for the betterment of our Bitterroot Valley, either by
joining positive causes, joining a Board of a local non-profit or even running for public
office. We love seeing Leadership Bitterroot graduates names in the news developing
ways to improve our economy, culture, and causes.
Leadership Bitterroot has been identified as ‘the best kept secret in the Bitterroot’.
So contact the Chamber today as applications are being accepted for the new class members
now!! Class begins September 17, 2008!

Curves New Manager
Curves in Ravalli County of Montana,
located at 924 Adirondac Avenue in
Hamilton, is pleased to announce the
promotion of Cheri Stahlecker from Assistant
Manager to Manager. She started
as a Fitness Technician in December
2005 and was promoted to Assistant
Manager in December 2007. Stahlecker
has completed the Curves Learning Experience
Series I, II and III and continues
her studies in business managment,
leadership and customer service.

What a great event for Hamilton to host
- the Sr. Pro Rodeo. The Chamber hosts
a food wagon for the contestants both
Friday and Saturday. Breakfast burritos,
hamburgers, polish dogs, chips etc. were
available for hungry cowboys and they
took advantage of it!
Special thanks to Linda Glover and
Carol Saylor for all their help during
those two long days. Also all the volunteers
who were there to help us serve for

Nominations are now open for the general membership interested
in serving on the Bitterroot Valley Chamber’s Board of Directors.
The term of office is a three (3) year commitment and commences
on January 1, 2009, Interested candidates should contact Rick to
receive a description of responsibilities. The deadline for submission
is Tuesday, September 30, 2008, For further information please

Wine Tasting
This year marks the 25th Annual Wine Tasting,
sponsored by Hamilton United Businesses .

This year’s event will be held at the First Interstate
Center in Hamilton on Friday, October 17.
To mark this celebration, tickets will be $25 each
and will go on sale in September. The committee
will select wines from an extensive collection
from Summit Beverage, as well as, a collection of
meads from our local Trapper Creek Winery.
Also available will be hand-crafted ales from our
local Bitter Root Brewing, hors d ‘ouevres,
desserts, coffee and soft drinks.
So mark your calendar now to attend the 25th
Annual Wine Tasting at the First Interstate Center
in Hamilton.

Chamber of Commerce Leads Group can help you deepen your

you. We meet every second and fourth Tuesday at noon to network
with each other and help build each other’s business connections.
We are “exclusive”, meaning, that we only have one member per
profession, product or service in the group. Eligibility is based on
existing membership and a waiting list. Applicants must be a current
member of the BVCC and in good standing. We require a strong
commitment to attendance, provide a structured agenda, will spotlight
your business and refer you to others. Applications are available
at the Chamber. Come join us for lunch!

Summer is almost over and we will kick off September with our
annual Chamber Membership Appreciation BBQ. This event will
be held at the Daly Mansion on Friday, September 12 beginning at
5:30. All Chamber Members and their families are invited to attend
- it is the Chamber’s way of saying ‘thank you’ for all your support
during the past year. Cindy Beck from Albertsons spearheads this
event and has since its beginning 10 years ago - so mark your calendar
for Friday, September 12 for our 10th Annual Chamber BBQ!
Triple Creek Ranch
Triple Creek Ranch gained international recognition! According
to the prestigious ‘Travel and Leisure’ magazine, Triple Creek was
named as one of the best places to vacation in the World!!
The magazine made the announcement on NBC’s Today Show
and since then, Triiple Creek’s marketing manager, Amanda Dunn,
said her e-mail box has been filled and reservations have increased
dramatically.
Wayne and Judy Kilpatrick have managed the ranch for the past
25 years. Triple Creek is a 600 acre resort up West Fork Road
south of Darby. They employ 20 full time employees and more
than 50 part-time and seasonal help.
Kilpatrick said “guests come - spend money locally in town,
which contributes to businesses locally, and then leave.”
The original 40 acres of the ranch belonged to Reverend and
Mrs. House. He was a minister in Conner and both were teachers
in Darby. They raised four children in the original house located at
the center of the ranch. Over the last 25 years, new owners have
bought and sold the land and built luxurious cabins that increased
the quality of the retreat. Local owners are Craig and Barbara
Barrett who enjoy and use the area when they come on three and
four-day weekends in the spring and sumer. Craig is the Chairman
of the Board of Intel and Barabara is the current ambassador to
Finland.

New Emergency Department . . .
A new chapter for Marcus
Daly Hospital was the Grand
Opening of their new 20,000
square foot Emergency
Department. The new facility
will help the hospital meet
the increasing demands from
valley residents. This is a
state-of-the-art facility stated

The Grand Opening was well attended by dignitaries and valley
residents. Tours of the new facility were provided throughout the
day and lunch was served
to those attending.
On the other end of the
hospital, ground has already
been broken for a new
10,500 square foot rehabilitation
center which will
give valley residents
even more quality care
locally.

What An Accomplishment!
Bitterroot Drug had been planning and going over the details of
their remodel for the last 2 years. Last summer they remodeled
the back checkout counter and dispensing area. They also put in a
new compounding lab. This summer in June, they remodeled the
front end of the store - putting in new fixtures, lighting and
flooring. The work was done by Dowd Construction and Bitterroot
Drug employees. It took them 10 Very Long Days and they
were able to stay open the whole time!
The waiting room has always been their favorite part of the
store, according to Pete and Jeni Seifert, owners of Bitterroot
Drug; the historic photos, high ceilings with skylights and old
fashioned brick.. They put in a new display for the collection of
historic
apothecary
items
that
Bitterroot
Drug
has
collected
over the
last 100
years.
They
also
teamed up with Bitterroot Furniture to display one of their
massage chairs in the waiting room -- “I’m not sure who likes it
more, our customers, or the employees” Pete stated.
With their remodel they have opened up the store, making it
more comfortable for their customers and easier to display and
find items. “We want to make people feel welcome here and keep
the same hometown pharmacy atmosphere that Bitterroot Drug
has always offered since 1890.”
“Our customers have been very positive and responsive to the
remodel, which has made us feel proud of the store. It wouldn’t
have been possible without the hard work of Dowd Construction
and all our employees - who were very involved from start to
finish.”
