Once Upon a Land - There is something
to inspire young readers of every age at
Newark Book Festival this year.
Alongside a high quality catalogue of adults’ events,
Newark Book Festival will be taking over the town
on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th July with a whole
host of family-fun, including poets, illustrators, music,
street theatre, storytelling and the chance for young
readers to meet some of their favourite authors.
The Once Upon a Land children’s and young person’s
programme, sponsored by Tallents Solicitors,
promises to be the largest yet, and aims to nurture a
love of the arts and literature, tying in with the 2018
theme of Landscapes in Literature.
There is a wide selection of both ticketed and free
events as part of the festival with workshops, author
talks, and lots more to see and do.
Children’s authors taking part in the festival include
the author of The Apprentice Witch and A Witch
Alone, James Nicol, author of The Sinclair Mysteries
Katherine Woodfine and author and illustrator, Julia
Patton, who will launch the libraries Summer Reading
Challenge with stories of Long Long Dogs and crafts.
Last year’s much-loved Pirate Pete picture book
author Lucy Rowland will also be returning and, with
illustrator Ben Mantle, will be reading tales from The
Little Red Reading Hood, a contemporary and fun
take on the classic fairy tale.
At the centre of the fun, the Once
Upon a Land – Literature Quarter in
the market place and an Enchanted
Forest at Newark Castle will be
hosting performances and activities a
plenty for the whole family to enjoy.
As part of the Festival’s Sunday
Extravaganza, Newark Market place
will be transformed into a festival fun
zone with stalls, performances and
pop up workshops.
“We’ve got storytellers, street
theatre, writing and craft
workshops, an enchanted
forest, a reading challenge
and music. We have some
inspiring children’s authors
and illustrators hosting events,
and even the Gruffalo might be
lurking near Newark library.
It’s going to be an amazing
weekend with loads of events
for adults to enjoy too.” -
Sara Bullimore, Artistic Director.
NEWS
Desperate Dad
This summer something extraordinary
is happening again. Something familiar
and very welcome - albeit often a little
frustrating too.
It happens every four years without fail (two if you
count the Euros), but there’s always a little bit extra
excitement in the air during a World Cup year.
Once the football season finishes, you’ll find us
counting down the days, waiting with anticipation
for the soccer celebrations to kick off proper.
Wall charts are secured, sticker books swapped
and the TV schedule is taken over – quite literally
– by eager fans who are quickly swept up in the
ensuing match day manias.
I say fans, but it’s really just Boy 1 and me at
present, although Boy 2 is finally starting to show a
glimmer of interest this time around (thankfully).
Outnumbered, mummy is banished to the bedroom,
particularly in the first round stages when it seems
to be wall-to-wall Ronaldo and Messi seven-daysa-week.
There’s something even more magical about our
tournaments however, because we get two bites of
the cherry and double shots at the title.
With an English dad and Portuguese mum – my
dynamic duo are spoilt for choice when it comes to
supporting a sporting team. It’s the Three Lions
vs. The Navigators and god forbid should they ever
meet each other en route to the final.
But with twice the excitement comes twice the
expectation and the hype is cranked up to full notch
as we prepare to champion our respective teams
into oblivion.
Of course Daddy is completely English and
Mummy patriotically Portuguese, but the boys are
split, as they should be, so it’s really a win win, or
lose lose situation in England’s case, for them most
of the time.
This embarrassment of riches means our
international tournaments are real celebrations,
giving us something to shout about long into the
summer on many occasions.
4
Summer 2018
It’s a dream that I’m pleased has been passed on.
My own journey ignited by the classic capers of
Lineker and co in the more than memorable Italia 90
– now a frightening 28 years ago.
The romance burned bright into July all those years
ago as England marched merrily into the semi finals,
only to be cruelly out-manoeuvred by the West
Germans from the penalty spot and denied their
rightful place in the final.
I can still recall the thrill of that last minute winner
against Belgium, the nerve-shredding penalties
against Cameroon and the euphoric equaliser in the
semi-final, which took us to the brink of sporting
world dominance once more.
A heady height I’ve yet to re-experience in the
following all too familiar excruciating years of hurt,
Portugal’s unlikely triumph in the 2016 European
Championships a pleasing recent distraction for
us all.
There’s more than simply football to focus on
here though. This global gathering gives the boys
a fascinating insight into different cultures and
customs, a window of opportunity to experience life
beyond their boundaries and delve into the different
for a few weeks every few years.
They’re pretty well rounded in the first place, with
regular visits to Mummy’s hometown topping
up their Portuguese passion and doting foreign
grandparents more than ready to shower them in
affection at every opportunity.
But it always helps to further broaden their horizons
and gives us yet another excuse to brandish
the atlas and plot our courses to faraway and
unpronounceable lands.
And as full time eventually approaches and the
trophy is finally lofted, so the sticker books and
wall planners are packed away, another soccer
sensation consigned to the memory banks.
It’s never long before that fever pitch is reached
again however and if ‘they think it’s all over’ too
soon, the next knock out competition is always just
around the corner to make sure ‘it’s coming home’
for us all to enjoy together once more.
Summer Holidays
Lottie and Louie exploring
Lincoln prison
6
Summer 2018
John Dawber Gardens
Hey, hey, here comes summer and with
it, talk of holidays and adventures and
jetting off abroad.
Not me, sadly, everyone else.
I should take a break from social media during July and
August because I find myself staring wistfully at friends’
holiday snaps, as they sit by a Spanish pool, with their
toes dangling off the end of a sunbed.
I can’t help it - I get holiday envy. It’s a thing. Well, it is
for me, mostly because my husband refuses to get on
a plane and I don’t want to take the kids abroad
without him.
We once compromised by taking a family cruise around
the Mediterranean only to discover I get seasick.
So now, I either opt to spend a week vomiting, or I stay
at home. Hmmm...
Instead, I have learned to count my blessings and enjoy
the attractions on my doorstep.
‘Staycationing’ or at least not venturing too far from
home has its perks and, if we have a run of good
weather, I can feel slightly smug about not having spent
£4,000 seeking out the sunshine in Majorca. It rains
there, too. Or so I have heard...
Whether you choose to take a picnic to the park, head
to the coast, experience an adrenalin hit at one of the
theme parks or have a barbecue in the back garden,
when the sun shines on this green and pleasant land of
ours, there is nowhere finer.
Plus, we live in an amazing city. Yes, Lincoln has its
problems - parking is on the pricey side, the high street
is looking a bit sparse on the shopping front and there
is the issue of the erm, unsavoury types in the
underpass but get past those niggles and there is
plenty on offer for families.
Here are a few of my favourite things to do in the city.
1. Unlike York, Lincoln isn’t on an obvious tourist trail,
despite having similar attractions to York. York has
a castle. We have a castle. York has an impressive
minster but we’ve got a cathedral (voted the best
cathedral in the UK, no less). We don’t have dungeons
and we don’t have a Yorvik Viking Centre but we do
have The Collection Museum which is free to enter,
the Museum of Lincolnshire Life and the Usher Gallery.
During the summer holidays, all three venues put on
weekly events and workshops, many of which are free,
or cost just a couple of quid to attend. I’m waiting for
the return of T-Rex to The Collection for the next Night
at the Museum extravaganza. I reckon my four-year-old
will scream his head off (with delight, I hope).
2. In need of a cultural fix? Take the family along for
one of the guided tours at Lincoln Castle. Having
moved here 17 years ago, I only recently got around to
taking a tour of the castle and prison with my children.
It was brilliant – educational
and engaging for all ages. My
12-year-old was fascinated by
some of the more gruesome tales
about the demise of the prisoners
in Lincoln’s Victorian Prison and
she went ‘ghost-hunting’ with her
dad in the Separatist Chapel, the
only one of its kind remaining in
the world, also housed inside the
prison.
3. Seriously, how can anyone not
enjoy spending time in Lincoln’s
Cultural Quarter? The Bailgate
is one of my favourite places to
wander around, looking at the
unique boutiques and shops. I
like to grab a coffee and a slice
of cake from Stokes at The Lawn
and let the children explore the
John Dawber Gardens, often
overlooked, just behind the play
area near the car park. Even
climbing Steep Hill can be fun if
you challenge your family to a race
to the top (not recommended for
those with weak ankles, or angina).
4. If you have family and friends
living nearby and they are happy
to babysit, why not leave your
children in their care and book into
one of the city’s hotels for a night?
If anything goes dreadfully wrong
(an emergency situation like your
four-year-old has left his favourite
teddy at home and won’t settle
without it at his nan’s), you can
rectify the problem and get back to
the hotel in time for a nightcap.
If you are looking for a city break,
The Tower Hotel, which is just a
short walk from the castle and the
Bailgate area, is placed second
on Trip Advisor, with reviewers
raving about their stay. I can vouch
for Washingborough Hall hotel
currently ranked Number One
on the same website if you want
an elegant-yet-laidback, country
manor vibe. Mr C and I stayed
there recently. We sipped a couple
of rhubarb gin and tonics on the
terrace, ate an a la carte meal in
the restaurant and fell into a bed
When she’s not writing about life with her
husband and their two children, Molly’s
Guide and newspaper columnist Sam Curtis
likes to mess about on Instagram and eat
chocolate, preferably at the same time.
Doing the Lincoln
Castle Wall Walk
that was as wide as our bedroom
at home. I’d like to say I managed
to get a lie-in but it seems my
body-clock is set to school run
hours for the rest of my life. Still,
the hotel is highly recommended
and you can even take your dog if
you don’t want to take the kids.
5. The outdoor pool at Jubilee
Park in Woodhall Spa may be
heaving on a hot sunny day but
it would be the same poolside
at Hotel Sol Don Pablo in
Torremolinos. Woodhall Spa is 40-
minutes away and honestly, once
you’ve laid down your towel and
slapped on some suncream, it’s as
good as any Spanish lido.
6. If you book an all-inclusive
break, one of the main perks is not
having to cook – so why not gift
yourself a night off and take the
family out for a meal?
You can eat your way around
the world right here in Lincoln.
Go Italian at Bar Unico in the
city centre (they serve more
gelato flavours than you can
shake a lollipop stick at), have
a Greek Odyssey at Gabby’s or
your children will be talking about
the three-foot-high flames and
flying prawns long after they have
finished their teppanyaki.
Holiday abroad you say? Not
for me. I’d rather be a tourist in
beautiful Lincoln (unless, that is,
someone offers to whisk me away
to a five-star hotel in Bora Bora
with a luxury spa, infinity pool and
views of the Pacific Ocean).
EDUCATION
Kingsdown Nursery
Do you have a 2, 3 or 4 year old? If so, do you know
that the Government is providing funding for some 2
year olds, and all 3 and 4 year olds to attend Kingsdown
Nursery for 15 hours or 30 hours a week? Young
children can have great fun playing with or alongside
other children, exploring paint, water, clay and playing
outside in a safe, well-equipped play area. As well as
the benefits for the children, having a nursery place at
Kingsdown, can give parents and carers a welcome
break from the demands of a busy toddler or young
child. It can give you extra time to go shopping, do
some housework, look after the baby, take a college
course, do extra hours at work or just have a cup of
coffee in peace and quiet, and drink it while it’s still hot!
Most children attend Kingsdown for 5 mornings or 5
afternoons. We also offer full days from 8.45 – 3.25
p.m. There is a breakfast and after school club if you
need a longer day. Coming regularly helps children
develop friendships and positive relationships with staff
and other children. Families who are not eligible for
the Government 2 year funding often buy one or two
sessions a week to help their child develop their social
skills ready for starting in our 3-4 year old nursery class.
30 Funded Hours for eligible 3 and 4 year olds.
15 Funded Hours for eligible 2 year old and
all 3 and 4 year old. Sessions are available to
buy, morning, afternoons or full days for nonfunded
2 year olds or as a top up to the 15
hours funded for 3 and 4 year olds.
At Kingsdown we offer a wonderful engaging
environment, both indoors and outdoors. Children
have access to top quality resources and fully
qualified staff, both teachers and Early Years
Practitioners. We teach children to share, take turns,
learn about letters and numbers, paint, write and
draw, ride, climb, explore and investigate.
Throughout the year, Kingsdown provides
many opportunities for children to
experience nature in all its forms. Each
spring, we have a bird’s nesting box with
a camera in and children eagerly watch
the laptop to see if eggs have hatched yet.
Kingsdown is fortunate to be near Birchwood Nature
Park and we regularly take groups of children for
walks there, to look for mini-beasts and to study the
changing seasons.
All children have weekly music lessons with Yasmin
from Rattle & Roll. Children learn about classical
composers and how to recognise their music. They
also play percussion instruments. We also have
Stuart from Meet the Beasts in with his exotic pets,
snakes, lizards, spiders, insects and snails.
Children can wear their own clothes but many wear
our uniform of red, blue or purple polo shirt and
sweatshirt. Children invariably join in with messy
activities at nursery and if they have their Kingsdown
uniform on, they are hard wearing and will stand up to
the demands of a busy day at nursery!
Sir William Robertson Academy
Choosing a secondary school is one of the most
important decisions you will have to make for you
and your child.
The decision making process
will be eased by gathering
as much information about
possible schools in advance
of the October deadline.
With this in mind, we would
like to extend an invitation to
parents/carers and your child
to come and tour the Academy
where you will see first-hand
the excellent behaviour of our
pupils and the high-calibre
learning taking place in the
classrooms.
Sir William Robertson Academy
is judged as Ofsted ‘Good’
in all areas of the school and
has also been recognised as
being one of the ‘Top 100
non-selective state-funded
schools in England’ by Nick
Gibb MP – Minister of State
for Schools (February 2016).
The Academy is a highly
EDUCATION
Lincoln Minster School
‘As a head teacher I am often asked what
makes an excellent education. Of course
it is many things, but the main part of
my answer to such a question always
remains the same.
I think it is an education that focuses on values
such as respect, commitment, integrity, care; the
list is endless. But, it is the way in which those
personal qualities are developed by the school and
through the opportunities on offer that makes an
excellent education and indeed a school.
I think how you do things can matter more to a
child’s success than the specific result. The old
adage of, “How one plays and what one plays for,
that alone reveals the man” has never been so
important in the world our children are growing up
in. Lincoln Minster Preparatory School is all about
character and attitude, along with academic rigour;
an education that stands apart in the values and
attitudes of its pupils and those who care for them.
Popular opinion seems to dictate that education
or school cannot do both in terms of academic
success and development of character. I would say
that a school is not delivering unless it does both.
A school must focus on academic expectations,
standards and rigour, but at the same time ensure
that the curriculum is broad and varied to develop
creativity, subject specialism, independence, with
the personal, social and emotional development
deeply embedded in the ethos and culture of the
school.
We are proud of all we achieve at Lincoln Minster
Prep, including our academic results which have
led to our position in the Top 50 Prep Schools.
In short, an excellent school delivers on both;
character building and academic excellence.’
Branston Community Academy
Branston Community Academy has rightly
gained a reputation as one of the very
best schools in Lincolnshire. The school is
rated by Ofsted as outstanding in all areas
and in 2015 and 2016 the school received
two national awards for the academic
achievements of students for both progress
and attainment at GCSE.
This is all within a school site that boasts
excellent facilities enhanced further by £3 million
worth of recent investment.
But it is not just the exceptional educational
achievements which sets Branston apart – it
is the desire to achieve academic excellence
in a truly caring, supportive and nurturing
environment which the school is most proud of,
fostering values of individual aspiration, tolerance
and compassion. Ofsted has praised the
behaviour, resilience and kindness of students
along with teachers who ‘enthuse students with a
love for learning and foster a ‘can do’ culture.
Community is at the heart of this school and
manifests itself not only in the relationships
within the school but also the close ties with
local organisations, businesses and people.
The Academy is home to a thriving nursery and
Heron’s gym, complete with a pool for public
use. Art, Music and Sport play a large part of
Academy life. Visitors and local dignitaries are
welcomed to the Academy’s annual musical
production and also enjoy the numerous
concerts and shows throughout the year.
The views of students and parents show these
are more than just fine words. In a national
survey both rated the school as outstanding on
every level. The school is justifiably proud of its
success and students and welcomes visitors
to see this in action either at the advertised
HEALTH & SPORT
Muay Thai
Muay Thai, also known as the science and art eight
limbs is an ancient martial art that has been allowed
to evolve over the years to become one of the most
effective unarmed combat systems in existence.
The art brings huge physical and spiritual benefits
to all practitioners. Muay Thai students experience
massive improvements in fitness and strength, better
co-ordination and improved mental well-being.
Chao Phraya Muay Thai academy are delighted to offer classes
for children of ages five years and upwards so that they can
experience the many benefits of this amazing martial art from a
young age. Our classes are small with dedicated and qualified
instructors. We have lots of fun, while providing a positive and
constructive outlet for boundless energy.
LUCY’S MUAY THAI STORY
Our daughter Lucy is 11 and has Pathological Demand Avoidance
(PDA) which is a diagnosis under the autism umbrella. We have
had a long and challenging journey since we first noticed that
things weren’t quite right and have struggled to get help with
managing her condition.
We wanted somewhere Lucy could channel all of her anxieties
and frustrations, and looked into lots of different sporting
activities. Other sports worked, but only for a short time. Then
one day I heard about Muay Thai. I spoke with the Chao Phraya
team and explained our story to them. They were very supportive
with Lucy and she quickly passed her first grading with flying
colours.
Children with PDA often don’t like to
receive demands put upon them and I was
worried that the discipline and structure
of each class would be too much of a
demand for her to cope with but she
wanted to give it ago. Lucy tried it out and
fell in love with the sport from day one.
We have never seen her so focused on
anything before. Lucy still comes home,
trains and practices with her punch
bag, concentrating on technique and
positioning. She is even learning how to
speak Thai from the Chao Phraya team!
Our friends have commented about how much calmer Lucy is
since she has done Muay Thai. Muay Thai has given our family and
our daughter our lives back - it even supported Lucy through her
SATS recently! We are grateful to the Chao Phraya instructors.
MUAY THAI !!!
Whether you want your child to learn self defence skills, build their
confidence, hone their concentration or even be a champion
Muay Thai athlete - Muay Thai has something to offer everyone.
HEALTH & SPORT
LCFC Junior Imps Club
August marks the second birthday of the Junior Imps
Club, Lincoln City Football Clubs Junior Membership
scheme. Over the two years Lincoln City’s success has
rapidly grown both on and off the pitch and the Junior
Imps have been one of the major success stories.
Our membership officially opened
on the 1st August 2016 5 days
before the first game of the 2016/17
season and 8 days before our first
home game of the season, a 6-1
victory against North Ferriby in front
of 3,662 fans and a massive 232 in
the family stand. The support from
the Junior Imps grew and grew and
before long the family stand was
sold out, game in game out.
The membership gives Junior
Imps Members the opportunity to
purchase discounted tickets in the
stadiums family stand, access to
Junior Imps events and a Junior
Imps membership card and
welcome pack.
As part of the membership one
lucky Junior Imp gets randomly
selected to be a club VIP for the
day, this member sits in the VIP
stand and gets to pick and award
the Junior Imps Man of The Match
to a Lincoln City player of their
choice.
As the months went on and the
Imps caught the attention of the
nation with their record breaking
FA cup run and their new Junior
Imps supported them all the
way. The journey would take the
Junior Imps to Championship
and Premier League stadiums
but started on the 15th October
at Sincil Bank with a 0-0 draw
against Guiseley in the fourth
qualifying round. A win against
Guiseley in the replay before a first
round win at home to Altringham
set the Lincoln Loco on its way.
The second round game at home
to Oldham saw countless Junior
Imps stay up past their bedtime to
watch former Premier League team
Oldham Athletic visit the Bank,
the prize an away trip to Mick
McCarthy’s Ipswich in The FA Cup
Third Round. The 3-2 win on that
foggy Monday evening sealed the
prize.
We also run activities throughout
the season such as Christmas
Parties, Away Trips and Junior
Takeover days.
24
Summer 2018
Two matches against Ipswich
and a home win against a team
that were to be promoted to
the Premier League in Brighton
sealed a trip to Premier League
Burnley on the 18th February.
The magic of The FA Cup struck
once again when Sean Raggett’s
89th minute winner sent the Imps
further than a Non-League club
had ever gone; the Quarter Finals.
The Emirates Stadium was the
next stop for the Imps and the
Junior Imps members were given
an allocation of 1000 tickets to
see Danny Cowley’s side face
Arsene Wenger’s.
The day was a memorable one
for all the Junior Imps, but was
made especially memorable for
Jude Jessop, our only member
who had attended every Lincoln
City match that season in the
Family Stand. As a reward for
his outstanding commitment and
support he became Lincoln City’s
mascot for the day, giving him
a behind the scenes tour of the
Emirates Stadium, an opportunity
to meet both teams players and a
chance to walk out with his team
live on BT Sport.
Focus then returned to the league
campaign with Lincoln City top
of the league going in to the run
in with Tranmere Rovers and
Forest Green Rovers hot on their
trail. The Support from the Junior
Imps was as magnificent as ever,
with the Family Stand selling out
for every game after the Arsenal
Fixture. The Imps would go on to
win the league after a tense 2-1
Home Win against Macclesfield
in front of a capacity crowd. The
Junior Imps would be watching
Lincoln City in the football league
for the 2017/18 season.
The 2017/18 season saw
changes at Sincil Bank with
the arrival of the pre match
Family Fan Zone, an area
where Junior Supporters
can come before the game
and take part in different
activities that are on offer and win
a range of Lincoln City FC prizes.
Another first was our very
successful Junior Takeover day
where Junior Imps members were
given the opportunity to apply
for a matchday job at the club.
Job roles ranged from First Team
manager all the way to Poachers
Assistant and the successful
applicants came in for the day to
work with their new mentors.
The highest point of the season
was Lincoln City’s trip to
Wembley in the Checkatrade
Trophy Final where thousands of
Junior Imps walked up Wembley
Way to watch Lincoln City FC
beat Shrewsbury courtesy
of a first half goal from Elliot
Whitehouse. Who would have
thought on that warm summers
night at Sincil Bank on the 9th
August 2016 that 608 days later
the Junior Imps would have had
well over 2000 members and
would be watching the Imps lift a
cup at the world’s most
famous stadium?
The Junior Imps has so
much to look forward to
for the 2018/19 season,
we are moving to our
own specific family stand,
the second Junior Takeover
Day, membership perks at
local businesses, a Junior Imps
Fan Council, more away trips,
Christmas parties, matchday
activities, birthday card from the
team as well as much, much
more.
We look forward to welcoming
you to Sincil Bank and cheering
the Imps towards more success
for the 2018/19 season.
1. NOT ENOUGH TIME - It’s one of the top
reasons people give for not working out, with
all that you have to do in your busy life, it’s
easy to skip a workout in favour of something
else on your to-do list. Before you know it,
you’re not going to the gym at all. The Curves
Solution: In only 30 minutes at Curves you
get a complete workout, cardio and strength
training that works every major muscle group.
2. NOT FUN - What motivation is there
to stick with something you don’t enjoy
doing or that’s become boring? The
Curves Solution: We always have lively
music and a fun workout with friends
that can’t be beat. Plus, you can mix it
up with Curves classes, such as cardio,
boxing, balance, or body basics.
4. NO IMMEDIATE RESULTS - When you don’t see the number on your scale
dropping or clothing fitting better it’s easy to feel discouraged. The Curves
Solution: We understand that you want to see immediate results but we also know it’s
important to lose weight at a healthy rate and celebrate the small wins along the way.
With over 25 years of helping our members achieve success, we know how to help you
get the results you want and our coaches can keep you motivated to reach your goals.
3. TOO COMPLICATED
- Walk into most gyms, and you
find a vast array of equipmentdumbbells,
barbells, exercise
balls, kettle bells, treadmills,
elliptical trainers, stair climbers,
rowing machines, and more.
Where do you begin? The
Curves Solution: Curves offers
a simple circuit that your Curves
Coach will teach you when you
join. The hydraulic strength
machines don’t require you to
make adjustments before you
use them; simply hop on the
circuit at any point and go.
5. Injury - Whether you’re
fearful of getting injured
in a gym or healing from a
previous incident, nothing
halts a fitness plan faster
than injury. The Curves
Solution: Your Curves Coach
will show you proper form for
every move and tailor your
workout to your individual
ability and goals, and a
coach is always present in
the club, keeping an eye out
for proper technique.
6. GYM-PHOBIA - Gym-phobia might not
be a real word, but it is a real fear. Working
out in a gym can feel uncomfortable.
Perhaps you are embarrassed by how
you look, or you worry that people
are watching you and judging your
performance. The Curves Solution: One
of the top reasons women choose Curves
is because they feel welcome. Curves is
a community of women of all ages and
fitness levels—women, like you, simply
focused on getting stronger, fitter,
healthier in a great environment.
7. LACK OF ACCOUNTABILITY -
Sometimes your own willpower isn’t enough
to get you to the gym regularly, and the less
frequently you work out, the more likely it
is that you will quit altogether. The Curves
Solution: Borrow some willpower from your
Curves Coach and the Curves’ community
who are there every step of the way. At
one-on-one monthly coaching sessions your
Curves Coach will track progress towards
your goals. Our CurvesSmart* innovative
technology gives you moment-to-moment
feedback to guide you to work out to your
fullest potential.
8. BURNOUT - Enthusiasm
is a good thing but too much
of a good thing turns bad.
Exercising too hard and
too often runs you down
physically and mentally
and can lead to injury. The
Curves Solution: Your
Curves Coach will help you
ease into a workout routine
that’s right for your level of
fitness and point out the
importance of including rest
or easy days into your fitness
schedule to allow your body
time to rebuild after workouts.
9. TOO HARD OR TOO EASY - If your workout is too easy, you’ll feel like you’re
not getting anything for your effort; too hard, and you’ll become discouraged—
possibly injured—and quit. The Curves Solution: Curves works for anyone at any
fitness level. Because of Curves’ exclusive resistance technology, the intensity
adapts to your ability.
10. COST - A review of the household budget can encourage cost-cutters to drop their
gym memberships. The Curves Solution: The value of a Curves membership simply
can’t be matched. You get a 30-minute total body workout, a trained coach supervising
every workout, one-on-one monthly coaching sessions, specialty fitness classes, safe and
effective machines designed especially for women, a supportive community of women
to workout with CurvesSmart technology that provides moment-to-moment feedback,
travel passes so that you can work out at clubs across the country and around the world,
and all for a reasonable membership fee. Yes, you may find a less expensive gym to join
but you’ll pay for it in a loss of benefits and services—the things that keep you going to a
gym and getting the result you’re after—good health. And good health is priceless.
DAYS OUT
Lincoln BIG
Families are being encouraged to make
the most of warmer days and catch the
holiday vibe – without even having to
pack a suitcase!
There’s always an extra buzz in the city at
this time of the year and Lincoln BIG is keen
to highlight two unmissable Summertime
attractions for families keen to spend more
quality time together.
Mums, dads and children, who would love to be
at the seaside but who are unable to get away,
will be thrilled to know that The Beach returns
to The Cornhill – in the heart of the city – on July
23, where it will stay until September 2. That
means there’s time for several visits!
Adults have the chance to relax in seaside-style
deckchairs surrounding the beach and watch
the action as their youngsters dig in with their
buckets and spades. Punch & Judy will be
turning up too and children can take a spin on a
colourful fairground ride.
Naturally, The Beach is in a handy location for
shops selling essential treats - including ice
creams, sweets, tasty snacks and drinks – and
it’s close to car parking and the city’s state-ofthe-art
bus station too.
At the Cornhill kiosk, children can enjoy visiting
Flight Central – where they will find arts and
crafts and aviation-themed activities throughout
the Summer holidays.
On August 11 and 12, the city’s RAF100
Weekend, which includes Lincoln BIG’s popular
1940s event, offers a bumper
load of attractions in 13 different
parts of the city.
This special weekend is
expected to bring about 30,000
people to Lincoln, to help
celebrate 100 years of the RAF
and it will include a flypast by
historic aircraft.
40
Summer 2018
Families will be able to browse a 1940s Market in
the city’s Cathedral Quarter, listen to live music,
watch dancing displays, visit charity stands and
more.
In the Uphill area, The Lawn is being turned into
a Vintage Village, where children can experience
old-fashioned rides, see Punch & Judy shows
and have a go at pottery painting. It’s the
ideal spot for a picnic too - or why not pop into
Stokes’ coffee shop?
On Sunday, everyone is invited to take a break
at a Street Tea Party, “Brew for the Few”, which
is taking place in the St Benedict’s Square area
from 11am to 3pm. It is being organised by
RAFA and the Healthy High Streets Group, with
donations to RAFA.
On the Saturday and Sunday, Lincoln BIG and
Lincs FM are encouraging people to visit their
stage in City Square and take time out to enjoy
live music between 10am and 5pm.
There’s also the chance to visit aviation and
heritage stands – staffed by members of
Lincolnshire’s Lancaster Association, volunteers
from Thorpe Camp and Cranwell Aviation
Heritage Museum and staff from InvestSK – in
the pedestrianised South High Street.
Are your family Red Arrows fans? Then why not
pop along to St Mark’s Shopping Centre and
check out a static model of a Red Arrows Hawk
Jet. Children can also sit in the model, creating
the perfect photo opportunity!
Vintage and modern fire engines and RAF
displays will also be found along the city’s
Brayford Waterfront.
And on Saturday night, why not let the children
stay-up later and watch the spectacular
fireworks display from Lincoln’s Brayford
Waterfront, from 9pm?
HOBBIES & ACTIVITIES
Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust
This summer search for the fierce
flying jewels of our skies.
Listen for the fast whirling of wings when you’re
near a river, pond or lake, or even in a woodland
glade or garden. It could be one of the fiercest
predators of our skies: the dragonfly.
Dragonflies are masters of flight. They duck and
turn in pursuit of their small insect prey. Then
dart, slow down, hover and move onwards
again. They are iridescent and colourful and
have been around since before the dinosaurs.
There are 23 species of dragonfly in the UK
and they are found in almost every habitat.
Several species travel a long way away from
water to feed in gardens, fields and woodland
edges. You might even see them resting on your
clothes line. One of the greatest wanderers is
the migrant hawker. Look for them hunting along
sheltered hedgerows in August and September.
Common darter
Amy Lewis
Blue-tailed damselfly
Geoff Trinder
Damselflies are closely related to
dragonflies but they are dainty and have
thinner bodies. As a general rule, the
damselfly rests with wings folded, while the
stockier dragonfly keeps its wings spread
outwards. There are 17 species of damselfly
in the UK. The earliest damselflies are on
the wing by early May. The last dragonfly
of the year might still be flying on a warm
October day.
The highest number of species found is
during July and August. Like most insects,
dragonflies are at their most active in warm
sunny conditions, so pick your day wisely.
Binoculars will come in handy, as most will
fly off if you get too close. And of course,
take care at the water’s edge.
Both dragon and damselflies are reliant
on water for their reproduction. In fact the
jewel-coloured adults we see only emerge
for a small part of their whole life cycle.
Most of their lives are spent under the water
in lakes, ponds and streams as larvae or
‘nymphs’. Unlike a caterpillar completely
transforming into a butterfly; dragonflies
don’t undergo a complete metamorphosis.
HOBBIES & ACTIVITIES
Jubilee Park
Jubilee Park in Woodhall Spa is hosting
a wide variety of summer entertainment
and leisure events for the family.
On Saturday 14th July visitors can enjoy an
afternoon of music in the bandstand with a
Sunday afternoon concert organised by the
Spa Singers and Lincoln Hospital band to
commemorate 100 years of the RAF. The music
starts at 2pm.
A week later on Saturday 21st July, there’s the
outdoor evening screening of popular film the
Princess Bride -in conjunction with the famous
local Kinema- inside the pool enclosure and on
28th July another of the regular midnight swimspre-booking
is advised for both these events.
Once the school holidays begin, the general
swimming hours at the heated open air pools
extend to the school holiday timetable. Online
booking facilities for up to 200 swimming places
mean that in the event of hot weather, visitors
can book ahead and know they can get in.
The water temperature is always around 29°C
and the enclosure has plenty of room for picnics
and sunbathing, with sun loungers available to
hire.
Elsewhere in the park the lawns and rose garden
are also popular for family picnics and the
refurbished play area will keep the youngsters
entertained. Light refreshments are available at
the park café.
Jubilee Park is close to the Woodland Trust
mixed woods and the spa resort’s many
independent shops and restaurants. The Viking
Way long distance footpath passes through the
village.
Full details appear on the park website www.jubileeparkwoodhallspa.co.uk and on Facebook.
Not only does Cranwell Aviation Heritage Museum tell
the fascinating story of historic RAF Cranwell, it also has
interactive exhibits including a flight simulator which challenges
you to land a Jet Provost on the runway before your fuel runs
out! To coincide with RAF100, our exhibition Gallantry in the
Air gives visitors the chance to discover the heroic figures who
were decorated for their bravery during World War II. Many of
the airmen featured in this exhibition gained the highest award
for their valour, with some of them paying the ultimate price.
Cogglesford Watermill is one of the few working watermills
in the country and has regular milling days on the second
Sunday of the month. Here you can find out about the history
of the mill and have a go at grinding flour from grain using our
hand turned quern stones. A short stroll along the River Slea
brings you to Navigation House, once the company office for
the Sleaford Navigation Company. The River Slea was once
a bustling, busy place, carrying laden barges into the heart of
Sleaford. At Navigation House, the loads were weighed so that
charges could be made before being carried off to their various
destinations.
