Is it just us, or does it feel like
Lincolnshire is a really great place
to be at the moment?
Here at Molly’s Guide we’ve noticed there’s something
a bit, well, special in the air right now.
Perhaps it’s the phenomenal success of our local
football team?
Lincoln City’s history-making performance seems to
have lifted the entire city.
Maybe the feel good factor we’re enjoying comes
from the anticipation of summer packed full of familyfriendly
entertainment?
Or perhaps our mood is simply down to the
anticipation of a change in the weather. The nights
are getting longer and the winter coats have been
consigned to the back of the wardrobe. Whatever the
reason, we hope you all have a spring in your step too.
Desperate Dad
A ‘Switch’ In Time...
I’m not quite sure how, but my middle child turned eight last month. It seems
incredible to me really as he’s always been my ‘baby’ – well until the new one
turned up earlier this year that is.
Overnight I was transformed from a
dad-of-two (boys), into a father-ofthree
(now a girl), and prepared I most
certainly was not.
My nappy days were done and dusted;
I was a fully-fledged footie-dad
without a second thought for Barbies
or unicorns, and Pink was just that
annoying pop star.
But in actual fact those sleepless nights
had already started to reappear long
before baby number three made her
grand entrance.
The dreaded lure of technology has
cast its spell upon this house and try as
4
Spring 2019
we might to repress it as much as possible,
our 21st century lives seem to incorporate it
at every turn.
We have our phones, Netflix, Sky TV,
iPads, iPods, computers, tablets and a PS4
– we even have a blummin’ robotic hoover
constantly beavering around after the cat
(which is actually great).
It’s all a bit much and gets on top of me
sometimes though, especially when I think
back to ‘how it was in my day’.
Computers were only just making an
appearance in schools when I was about
to leave them. I say ‘computers’ but it
was more like the singular – housed in a
warehouse-sized classroom, which required
ear defenders to operate due to the constant
buzzing if you came within 20 paces of it.
So even though our humble abode often
resembles a Microsoft after party venue, a
brand new handheld piece of equipment
was requested as part of boy 2’s birthday
bragging.
A ‘Nintendo Switch’ is suddenly the order
of the day – complete with Super Mario
paraphernalia and all the gubbins.
I’m sure it won’t be long before I’m unable to
prise it from his daylight-starved hands and
will need to fashion a rota just to get him off
it and to the table in time for his tea.
Protest a little too much I may, but it remains
a constant concern trying to ensure that their
screen time is regulated, one I’m sure I’m not
alone in sharing these days.
I guess I’ll just have to ‘console’ myself with
the fact that my two eldest do still like to get
out and about a bit every now and then.
Whether that be football in the park, a bike
ride to oblivion or just a swashbuckling
lightsabre fight with a couple of dog-chewed
sticks down the park.
This we’ll continue with gusto as the summer
months stretch out ahead of us and the
warmer weather basks those pale arms
and square eyes – my mission impossible
perhaps?
The trump card up my sleeve however, may
well be the chance to steer my new daughter
more steadily through the mire of wires - to
ration her technological appetite a little more
regularly and try not to make it the be all and
end all of every hour or so after school.
A virtual bridge too far some might say,
but it’s worth a shot I reckon and I hope
that come the summer holidays when boy
2’s new gadget is no longer the ‘Apple’ of
his eye, he’ll ‘Switch’ attention to the great
outdoors once more and let me show him
what life was really like ‘when I weren’t a
dad’.
Family Fun
What really happens when the school bear comes to stay?
When my youngest child came running out of school
one Friday afternoon with an extra PE bag, I knew
exactly what was inside.
The School Bear - Buddy.
Buddy is part of the learning experience for Key
Stage One children. His role is to incentivise
youngsters to work towards a goal, whether that’s
mastering neat handwriting, learning their word
cards or doing fantastic number work - with the
reward being the chance to take Buddy home for the
weekend.
The host child then cares for the bear for the
weekend, keeps a journal and takes pictures of all the
things they do together.
The children love it. Buddy is their class mascot and
it is an honour to be
given the chance to
look after him.
I’m not sure parents
enjoy ‘entertaining’
their child’s furry
friend quite so much.
It means you
have to portray
your homelife as
interesting and
wholesome. You
can hardly let on
exactly what your
weekend really
looks like, can you?
Yes, teacher, here’s
a picture of Buddy
and my son watching
Netflix for two hours
while I power through
a pile of ironing.
Oh, and here’s another one of us at Greggs, eating a
sausage roll (full-fat meat not even vegan) because I
ran out of inspiration to make a healthy lunch.
And finally, here’s me and Buddy, watching Line of
Duty when the kids are in bed, as I sip my third gin
and tonic while scrolling through ‘Who is ‘H’’ theories
on Twitter.
No, it doesn’t matter how mundane a weekend I
have planned, once my child has the School Bear in
his happy little mitts I have to up my game. It’s an
unwritten given.
So, despite having nothing planned, the recent
unexpected arrival of Buddy Bear (you never know
when it’s going to be your turn - that’s all part of the
‘fun’) meant I had to hastily think of things to do.
Rather than Buddy’s journal ending up full of photos
of my son watching TV and eating Wotsits while I
did housework, instead, we enjoyed a breezy walk
around Whisby Nature reserve during Storm Hannah,
visited a local coffee shop for a posh hot chocolate
and took in the landmarks of the city.
6
Spring 2019
At least things have changed since my eldest child
first brought home the previous school bear (RIP
Rusty, I reckon you disintegrated circa 2014, having
commendably served your time as the class mascot).
Back in the old days, before data protection was such
a hot potato, parents could leaf through all of the prior
entries in his accompanying journal.
Now, thanks to new GDPR laws, Buddy is sent home
with a blank piece of card and a polite request to fill it
with photos, drawings and stories.
Only the teacher gets to see what Buddy has been up
to with his host family.
There is no shame in taking the school bear absolutely
nowhere. That said, I secretly hope the next time
Buddy Bear is sent home we have something exciting
planned in the diary - like a festival or camping trip
because as a family, we do those things, too.
However, there is one thing that always happens
to the school bear while he’s with us - a ‘pamper’
session.
This involves a dip - well, more of a full-on drenching
and spin at 1400 rpm in the hydropool (washing
machine) and a blow-dry. During his last visit, I put
him in the tumble dryer for 20 nail-biting minutes. But
for the grace of God, he didn’t lose a limb or an eye,
so this time I dried him with the hairdryer.
I snapped a picture of my son brushing Buddy’s fur for
the journal but after he went to bed, I spent another
thirty minutes restoring the bear’s coat to its former
fluffy glory
I also used a Sharpie to cover a scratch on his glass
eye (he looked like he had a cataract) and coloured in
the frayed fabric of his worn,
leather nose, so the rips were
less noticeable.
Which is probably a good thing because there
was a tendency for some parents to view the school
bear visiting as the opportunity to play the oneupmanship
game.
According to an article posted on the Daily Mail’s
website in 2014 - a collection of teddy diaries showed
some parents giving the bear a taste of the high life
- think Greek holidays and helicopter rides. Internet
forums were filled with mothers driven to the brink by
the class bear.
Leafing through the school bear diary was probably
enough to make some folks feel as if they weren’t
trying hard enough at this parenting malarky. I imagine
them proudly sticking in their photo of Buddy Bear at
Prezzos, only to turn the page back a few weeks to
see an image of Buddy, sunning himself in Sorrento,
eating AUTHENTIC pizza while on a weekend jaunt to
Europe with a different family.
Thankfully, at my son’s school parents can no longer
compare antics, so most should feel relinquished of
any duty to show Buddy in anything other than an
authentic setting.
By the time I
finished he looked
(and smelled) like a new bear.
Buddy may have visited during a pretty average
weekend for the Curtis clan but every washable thing
he came home with is going back to the classroom on
Monday smelling of Lenor.
I’ve just had a terrible realisation. Every time the
school bear needs a detox, my son is going to be
‘rewarded’ with the ‘honour’ of bringing him home,
isn’t he?
Lie back Buddy, I’ll get you a
robe and slippers.
EDUCATION
Newton Academy
Newton Academy - the science club for girls
A new academy aimed at encouraging young girls to pursue careers
in science and technology has been launched in Lincoln.
The Newton Academy – the Science Club for
girls – was set up by the University of Lincoln in
2014 to take girls on a 3-year scientific voyage
of discovery. Since then over eighty Year 6 girls
from across Lincolnshire have enrolled and have
attended our Saturday Club events.
The Saturday Club is a series of Saturday morning
science and technology-themed workshops
consisting of hands-on activities and
projects, designed to work alongside the
National Curriculum, that will inspire
and enthuse the next generation of
female scientists and engineers.
The Programme has included the
Robotics Big Launch; Spud Science;
The Chemistry Christmas Cracker; The
Engineering EGGstravaganza!; Pharmacy
Phacts; and a visit to the Big Bang Fair at the
NEC, Birmingham.
The Academy has been created as part of the
University of Lincoln’s Athena SWAN project,
acknowledging the Institution’s commitment to
improving the representation of women in science,
engineering, technology and mathematics (STEM).
To improve the representation of female
academics in some STEM areas (particularly in
physics, mathematics, engineering and computer
science) we have to attract more girls to these
subjects at School level (e.g. currently only 20% of
Physics A-level students are female). We believe
that early engagement is the key to increasing the
popularity of STEM subjects among our girls. The
Academy, therefore, aims to inspire 10–14 year
olds in STEM subjects – subjects that research
shows they are less likely to pursue – opening
their eyes to the possibilities of what they
can achieve, and encouraging them
to consider post-16 study in STEM
subjects... and ultimately, of course, to
pursue science and technology careers.
But most of all, the Newton Academy
is all about showing young girls that
science can be fun! There are currently
120 girls taking part.
Girls enrol in the Academy at the end of Year 6
and stay until the end of Year 9. During their three
years, ‘Newton Girls’ will take part in projects
that develop their confidence, their enthusiasm
for STEM, and essential problem-solving and
critical thinking skills. They will develop leadership
skills and the confidence to challenge any
preconceptions that may prevent them from
pursuing and being successful in any STEM field.
Branston Community Academy
Proud to be at the heart of our community...
Branston Community Academy has rightly gained a reputation as one of the very
best schools in Lincolnshire. The school is rated by Ofsted as outstanding in
all areas and in 2015 and 2016 the school received two national awards for the
academic achievements of students for both progress and attainment at GCSE.
This is all within a school site that boasts
excellent facilities enhanced further by £3
million worth of recent investment.
But it is not just the exceptional educational
achievements which sets Branston apart – it
is the desire to achieve academic excellence
in a truly caring, supportive and nurturing
environment which the school is most proud
of, fostering values of individual aspiration,
tolerance and compassion.
Ofsted has praised the behaviour, resilience
and kindness of students along with teachers
who ‘enthuse students with a love for learning
and foster a ‘can do’ culture.
Community is at the heart of this school and
manifests itself not only in the relationships
within the school but also the close ties with
local organisations, businesses and people.
The Academy is home to a thriving nursery
and Heron’s gym, complete with a pool for
public use. Art, Music and Sport play a large
part of Academy life.
Visitors and local dignitaries are welcomed
to the Academy’s annual musical production
and also enjoy the numerous concerts and
shows throughout the year.
The views of students and parents show
these are more than just fine words. In a
national survey both rated the school as
outstanding on every level. The school is
justifiably proud of its success and students
and welcomes visitors to see this in action
either at the advertised open evening (10th
September 2019) or during a visit which can
Enjoy a wheelie fun family day out!
There’s nothing better than spending time with the
family, especially if it’s at an event that has so many
benefits. Lincolnshire’s first Cycle Fest on Saturday,
June 1, ticks all the boxes, so make sure you put the
date in your diary or on your kitchen planner.
This event promises plenty
for all ages to enjoy. Cycling
is fun, good for everyone’s
health and wellbeing and it’s
sustainable and eco-friendly.
Best of all Cycle Fest is FREE!
Based in the grounds of
Doddington Hall – the day
packed with activities.
exciting virtual velodrome
racing simulator and test out
Bransby Horse
Bransby Horses reveals plans
for their Summer Fayre
Lincolnshire-based equine charity, Bransby
Horses, is hosting their 44th annual
Summer Fayre on Sunday 2nd June 2019.
Last year, the Summer Fayre attracted a record
number of visitors and it is hoped the Fayre this
year will be another success for the charity. For
many in the area, it is a chance to visit the local
gem, take the family for a day out and meet some
of the 400 animals the charity looks after across
600 acres of beautiful countryside.
Entry to Bransby Horses is free and the
charity has confirmed they will have
more activities than ever this year.
There will be horse demonstrations,
a trailer training and loading
demonstration, a riding team
display, falconry, children’s play zone, arts and
crafts, a dog show, dog agility display, shopping
(including a second hand tack sale), glitter
tattoos, charity stands, a barbecue and a wide
selection of food available. There will also be the
usual picturesque walkways available to enjoy
a stroll, so families can visit some of the horses,
donkeys and mules who are living there.
Visitors can travel by car as there is plenty of
parking (suggested donation £1) but Stagecoach
will also be providing a free local bus service
from Lincoln City Centre Bus Station which
runs through Saxilby and stops at the Visitor
Centre at Bransby Horses.
Having celebrated their 50th
anniversary last year, the charity has
also recently confirmed they have
almost reached 1,000 equines in their care. More
than 400 equines living on site and 500 rehomed
but continuing to receive support from the
charity. In fact, last year alone, the charity helped
rescue and rehabilitate 93 horses, donkeys and
mules showing how the role of public support
continues to be pivotal to the continuation of the
work the charity do.
ACTIVITIES & HOBBIES
Woodland Trust
Get closer to nature with the Woodland Trust...
The weather is warming up, the
sun has definitely got his hat on
and now is the perfect time for
budding Nature Detectives to go
down to the woods and connect
with the great outdoors.
The Woodland Trust has lots of activities for families
to try from spotting spring flowers and birds, creating
woodland art or getting dirty while searching for
creepy crawlies.
One of the most iconic flowers you can go looking
for while spring is in full flow is the stunning bluebell.
Also known as ring-o’-bells, cuckoo’s boots, lady’s
nightcap and witches’ thimbles, these delicate
blooms are one of nature’s greatest spectacles. Just
be careful not to trample or pick them.
One of the best places in Lincolnshire to find an
amazing carpet of bluebells is Tattershall Carrs,
which is also a really great place to visit if you’re
interested in history and aeroplanes due to its role as
the home of the famous 617 ‘Dambusters’ squadron
during the Second World War.
Did you know that trees are some of the oldest living
things on the planet? But how can you tell which
It wouldn’t be a
British summer
without rainy days,
so you’ll also need
some things to do
inside as well.
If you love seeing
our feathered
friends in your
garden you can
make bird feeders.
All you need is lard, bird seed and a cookie cutter or two. But
it’s messy, so be ready to get your hands dirty!
• Cut the soft lard into pieces, put it in a bowl with the bird seed
and mix together
• Place cutters on a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper
• Firmly press the mixture into the cookie cutters and poke a hole
in each one
• Put them in the fridge to set
• Hang your feeders in the garden and wait for the birds to tuck in.
Find out more at www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/naturedetectives
ones are the really old ones? If you want to go
on an ancient tree hunt look for ones that are
• Short and fat, with wide trunks and
• Hollow
• Covered in knobbly, warty bits
• Missing their crown (top)
• Rough and craggy, with lots of nooks and
crannies in the bark
• Home to heaps of fungi, mosses and lichens
Maybe you could take a measuring tape and
measure around the bottom of the tree at its
fattest point. The fattest trees are the oldest!
If you don’t have a tape to hand, hold hands
with the family and see how many “hugs”
wide the trunk is. Trees should be measured
at a height of 1.5m.
You could also see how many different things
you can see living in the tree. A nice big oak
can easily support 500 different species.
If you’re inspired to get out and about, a great
starting point is to find your nearest wood at
www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/visiting-woods.
Don’t forget to wear tough shoes and pack
wellies and an anorak in case of bad weather.
You can also pack a picnic and before you
go download some spotter sheets or other
activities from the Nature Detectives site. If
you enjoy them you might consider joining
the Woodland Trust as a fully paid up Nature
Detective. You’ll get a fantastic welcome pack
bursting with awesome activities, an activity
folder, stickers, bookmark and membership
card, seasonal activity packs for outdoor
adventures all year round and details of
events in your area.
HOBBIES & ACTIVITIES
Scaman’s Eggs
How to make Monster Omelettes...
Spring is here and the time has come for
lots of adventures. After a day of learning,
there’s still enough daylight for games in the
garden, for sports after-school clubs, and
for walks and bike rides in the outdoors. To
keep the family fuelled for all this activity,
we need to be making sure we all have a
hearty, healthy breakfast.
After all, breakfast is the most important
meal of the day – we should “breakfast
like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner
like a pauper”, as the old saying goes.
When it comes to starting the day, there
is one food that is becoming more and
more popular, and that is eggs.
Recently, it has been announced
that soft-cooked eggs, like
poached with runny yolks, are
safe for pregnant women, young
children, and the elderly to eat,
meaning there are so many
breakfast options for all the
family to enjoy!
One of the reasons why children
love them so much is because
they’re so versatile. Fluffy
and scrambled, dippy yolks
with buttered toast, or mixed
into pancakes (which always
seems to be a favourite!)
– they’re quick and easy to
cook and incredibly tasty.
30
Spring 2019
But what makes eggs so great for breakfast?
Well to start, they are very rich in protein, making
them ideal for children to help them grow big and
strong and to keep them fuelled throughout their
active days. And, they’re packed with vitamins
and minerals, helping the
immune system and
energy metabolism.
When you buy eggs from
a free range farm, laid by
hens that are fed high quality, locally produced
feed, you know they are going to taste great, too.
What’s not to love?
When Scaman’s Eggs has been out and about across Lincolnshire speaking to school
children about breakfast, so many of them get super eggcited about omelettes. They tell us
all about their favourite toppings, from ham and cheese to mushrooms and peppers, and
how they can get involved with the making of them too.
So, to inspire your own springtime
breakfasts, we wanted to share a
fun recipe for Monster Omelettes!
FOR THE OMELETTE:
• 2 eggs, lightly beaten
• A handful of chives, chopped
• Your favourite locally-produced fillings
FOR THE
MONSTER:
• Mushrooms
• A variety of
vegetables
First, make the omelette. Carefully fry your
favourite fillings over a low heat.
In the meantime, break your eggs into a bowl
and whisk well until you start to see air
bubbles. This is what helps to make them
grow thick and fluffy.
Pour the beaten eggs over the fillings in the
frying pan and add the chopped chives.
Season to taste and leave to cook
through.
Use a spatula to loosen the edges
and once the bottom is nearly set
and become a buttery shade of
yellow, it’s time to flip!
Please tag us in the photos of your
Monster Omelette creations! You can find us
on Facebook, and on Twitter and Instagram
at @scamanseggs
Once the omelette has cooked,
make your monster! We used button
mushroom caps and a small slice
of steamed green bean to make the
eyes and halved cherry tomatoes
for red cheeks. For the mouth,
we used another green bean and
a mushroom cut into points, with
more steamed green beans for legs.
Grimsby, near Louth, with her husband
Neil, and two children Lotte (11) and
Phoenix (5).
Pipistrelle bats are the most common in the UK, and also one
of the smallest. They weigh only 4-9 grams - that’s about the
same as a teaspoon of sugar.
They like to eat small flying insects (such as midges) and can
eat up to 3,000 in one night! If you listen carefully, you might
be lucky enough to hear their high pitched calls (echolocation)
which can be heard by children, but not usually by grown-ups.
Listen for a clicking/slapping type sound.
Join us for a Moth and Bat Night at Far Ings,
at the surface. Look out for shrimp, crabs, jellyfish and even sea
Top 5 things to look
for this summer...
Summer is the best time of year to hunt for
bugs, beetles and minibeasts! When you’re in
your garden or out and about exploring, make
sure you look out for these top 5 things:
Butterflies Small tortoiseshells, red admirals,
peacocks, and painted ladies: these are just a few
of the 71 species of butterfly in the UK.
Moths Some moths fly during
the day and can be as colourful as
butterflies. Look for the hovering flight
of a hummingbird hawk-moth.
Ladybirds Have you noticed
that not all ladybirds have the same
number of spots? Count how many
spots you can spot.
Bumblebees Buzz, buzz, buzz.
See how long you can follow a bumblebee’s
journey from flower to flower.
Dragons
Well, dragonflies!
These colourful insects
look like flying jewels
whizzing around ponds
and wetlands.
