The Prime Minister’s wife and Greater Sydney Commission member Lucy Turnbull talked up the “exciting opportunity” in West Ryde on Thursday when she toured the Hermitage Road industrial strip alongside Ryde MP Victor Dominello and Vice President of the Riverside Chamber of Commerce Vice President Andrew Hill. They stressed the importance of small local manufacturing and received the enthusiastic support of local business owners for the new precinct, which is in line with the Commission vision for a “three city” Sydney with West Ryde on the western boundary of the Eastern Harbour City. “Our five year target is for a thirty minute city, where no matter where you live you will be within 30 minutes of the services, schools and medical facilities that you need, ” Mrs Turnbull said. “To achieve this, you particularly need light industrial urban services, so sharing local infrastructure is very important.” Victor Dominello agreed. “Lucy has shown great vision on the Greater Sydney Commission and I share her hope that the businesses that are here in West Ryde will stay here Birth notice TEDDY as we develop this area and support the light industrial base with new offices and services to create local jobs,” he said. “And I want to stress that we want jobs and services here, not high rise apartments.” But whether the local services will create local jobs for local people was met with skepticism by business owners who pointed out that their workforce couldn’t afford to live in Ryde due to high local property prices and rents. One local chemical manufacturer told them her entire workforce of thirty five people commuted to West Ryde from more affordable areas in Western Sydney and struggled to find parking in West Ryde. “If you could give us car parking, that would be a great start,” she said.
