In Memoriam
Richard F. Barella
Richard F. “Rich” Barella, 71,
of Lockport, died June 28. He
was born and raised in Chicago,
living in Oak Forest for 24 years,
and in Lockport for the past 14
years. Rich retired from Consolidated
Freight Ways in 2001 after
35 years of dedicated service. He
was a proud United States Vietnam
veteran. Rich was a member
of the German Antique Gun Club,
and was a loyal supporter and donor
to the Disabled American Veterans.
He loved to pheasant hunt,
fish, tinker with motors, especially
hot rods, but most of all cherished
spending time with his family. He
is survived by his loving wife of 50
years, Kathleen (nee Vuckovich);
three children, Richard Barella,
Renee (Mike) Tough and Regina
(Alex) Vatashki; five adored grandchildren,
Nichole Tough, Marcus
Hart, Richard Barella, Johnathon
Tough and Michael Tough. Numerous
nieces and nephews and many
friends also survive. In lieu of
flowers, memorials to the Disabled
American Veterans or the American
Cancer Society in Richard’s
name would be appreciated.
Carl O. Caneva
Carl O. Caneva, of Waukegan,
died June 29 after a nearly two-year
battle with cancer. He was born in
Joliet and grew up in Lockport. He
played little league at Dellwood
Park, attended Taft Grade School
and was a standout student both
academically and athletically. He
attended Lockport Township High
School where he played center for
the varsity basketball team during
the 1992-’93 and 1993-’94 seasons.
He graduated in 1994 and went on
to study environmental science at
Illinois State University. Throughout
his 20-year career, it brought
him to work in Dupage County as
a sanitarian, the City of Park Ridge
as an environmental health officer
and the City of Evanston’s Environmental
Health Department, where
he became a division manager and
assistant director of the department.
He is survived by his wife, Kelly;
daughter, Isabelle; parents, Lynda
and Ron; sister, Gina; grandfather,
Oscar Johnson; uncles, Reno Caneva,
Charlie Johnson; aunt, Carl
Johnson; and his brothers and sisters-in-laws,
nieces, nephews and
cousins. His family will continue to
share Carl’s humor, honesty, compassion,
and unbreakable selflessness,
making sure it lives on in all of
them. In lieu of flowers, Carl asked
everyone to take this next year and
think of something good to do for
the world around us. That could
mean helping another person, donating
to a cause, or planting a tree.
