High school senior-tobe
Patrycja Bafia, of Orland
Park, recently joined
thousands of students from
around the country at the
Congress of Future Medical
Leaders in Lowell, Massachusetts
— a prestigious
honors program that recognizes
high school students
aspiring to work in medicine.
Bafia was recently nominated
by science director
of the National Academy
of Future Physicians and
Medical Scientists, Dr. Mario
Capecchi, as a delegate
to represent Sandburg High
School. During this threeday
Congress on June 25-
27, she had the opportunity
to listen to presentations
from award-winning professionals
and network with
students from around the
country.
“The speakers were so inspiring
and helped us all to
understand that we are bigger
than what we really are,”
Bafia said. “Sometimes, we
do not realize how much
we truly have to offer. They
encouraged us to get out of
our comfort zone and not be
scared to fail.”
This program is designed
to inspire high school students
to pursue their dream
of becoming a leader in the
medical field and provide
them with the necessary
resources to stay focused
and motivated while they
work to achieve their goals.
While at the event, Bafia
learned about medical research
and the future of science
technology, as well as
received advice about medical
school and even heard
stories from patients and
medical prodigies. After the
presentations, students were
able to enjoy social gatherings
and dance parties
in the evening, according to
Bafia.
“I was able to meet thousands
of people my age with
the same interests as me,”
she said. “It was exciting to
connect with students from
all over. There was always
so much positive energy in
the room.”
From the moment she
opened her invitation in the
