Birthday Sale Now On!
leurieu Eye-Care is celebrating 7
F years of service to the
community this month.
In August of 2004, we opened our
doors for the first time and we have
built up the optometry practice from a
one-day a week practice to a 3 day a
week practice.
All going well, we should be a 5 day
a week practice within the next few
years.
Fleurieu Eye-Care would like to
thank all of you in the community and
surrounding districts for supporting
our fledgling business and we invite
you to come and celebrate our
birthday with us by presenting the
voucher in this months issue (above).
We specialize in ZEISS spectacle
lenses which are made and
manufactured here in Lonsdale,
Adelaide. We are proudly South
Australian owned and operated.
We have invested in the latest
technology so that we can look after
all your ocular health needs without
having to travel into Adelaide.
We have a retinal camera that allows
us to examine the eyes like never
before. This allows us to see things
that would be too difficult to spot
with the naked eye. This means there
is no chance of us missing any health
issues in your eyes like early Macular
Degeneration. It also allows us to
compare one visit to the next and spot
even the ☺most minute changes that
occur between eye-tests. So no more
relying on my slightly awkward
artwork.
For all the diabetics in the area, we
are able to check your eyes for any
diabetic changes so no need to see
that eye-specialist in Adelaide
anymore. We are able to do it all here
for you and we provide full colour
photos and a report to your GP.
We also have a visual-field analyser
and a GDx machine which allows us
to check your eyes for glaucoma and
other neurological diseases.
Optometry is also now changing in
the next 3 years to allow Optometrists
to prescribe and treat for eyeconditions
such as glaucoma. This
will take the pressure off the eyespecialists
in town and hopefully give
them more time for more serious eye
issues and cut down hospital waiting
lists etc etc.
Editor’s Comments
i Readers,
H Sealink had some dramas during August and
Kangaroo Island had no ferry service for the best
part of a week. As Murphy’s Law would dictate, one
ferry was having its scheduled service and
maintenance and the other one decided that it would
be a good opportunity to break down in no small
way. Parts and engineers were flown in and a few
days and many stressing moments later, Sealink
ruled the waves again.
The 129th Yankalilla Show is on Saturday 1st
October. Show your support for this wonderful
community event. See page 8.
The SALA Festival was on during August and
Normanville was showcasing artistic and musical
talents throughout the district. See page 3.
Letters to the editor cover several topics, including
the Norfolk Island pine tree issue for the main street
of Normanville. There seems to be a growing
number of residents against the council proposal to
plant Norfolk Pines.
Rapid Bay Cricket Club is celebrating their 40th
year this season. See page 15 for an informative
overview of those 40 years.
The Minnawarra Biodivesity Project is on again for
the spring survey and they are look for volunteers.
See page 25.
Jean Collins is retiring from the Senior Citizens Op
Shop where she has been the volunteer manager for
the past 10 months. Jean’s professionalism and
dedication were commendable. On behalf of the
community thanks for a job well done.
So, until next issue…
Cheers!
RIP Garry Nixon
2/6/1963 - 8/8/2011
any people throughout this district and
M beyond have fond memories of Garry
Nixon, often through the many community
organisations he was involved with over the
years. Garry’s sense of community spirit
and the fact that he was always willing to
help out, will always be remembered by
those who knew him. Involved in Apex,
Lions, Surf Life Saving, Yankalilla Golf
Club and even chucking papers out of a
vehicle in the wee hours of the morning -
sometimes picking up wayward teenagers
and delivering them home as well.
The Nixon family - Annie, Jesse, Rhys,
Wade and Emma - express their heartfelt
thanks for the kind thoughts, cards, flowers
and messages from the lovely people in our
caring community. His love of music lives
on through his sons Rhys and Wade. Garry
was the ultimate family man and will be
greatly missed.
A would like to welcome Carol Kretschmer to
Normanville Physiotherapy Clinic. Carol
recently did a locum for Bridget, so is already
familiar with our practice. She will be consulting
Mondays and is sure to be an invaluable member
of our team. Following is a few words of
introduction from her.
“Hello there, my name is Carol Kretschmer. I
am a ’50 something’ mother, grandmother,
physiotherapist and Reiki Master, now living at
lovely Aldinga Beach.
My longstanding career as a physio has been
largely in my own private practice in the city
limits (North Adelaide and Unley). I have
specialized experience in the field of women’s
health (pregnancy related disorders and pelvic
floor rehabilitation). More recently I have
studied Reiki therapy, a gentle but effective form
of Energy Healing which balances the body,
offering relaxation and stress relief, and
supplements the body’s own ability to heal itself
on many levels.
My own personal battle with a chronic (auto
immune) illness in recent years has led me to
embrace a broader, more holistic approach to
healing in my life and in my work.
Now that my health is returning, I look forward to
joining Bridget and her team in her
physiotherapy practice at Yankalilla.”
uth Eisner and I would like to thank all of
you who put your names on our petition to
the Yankalilla Council about not planting Norfolk
Island Pines in the main street of
Normanville. Together with another petition,
there were over 350 signatures. Surely this
groundswell of opinion from residents can not be
ignored by Council? The petition has now been
submitted in time for the next Council meeting on
August 18, 2011.
We would also like to thank the editors of
Yankalilla Regional News for being willing to
publish our letters over the last few months. This
helped inform residents of the issues at stake. As
well, thank you to all the businesses and public
places in Normanville and Yankalilla which
allowed us to place our petitions in their
shops. This is a good example of everybody
working together for the general good.
Climate Change
, along with other readers of your otherwise
informative magazine, was disappointed to see a
copy of an unsigned email regarding climate
change in the last issue of the Yankalilla Regional
News (p. 12). Whilst I don’t wish to argue against
each of the opinions expressed in the article/email
and would defend the right of individuals to
express those opinions, at the very least people
with the courage of their convictions would have
included their name. In addition, if the statements
made are to be taken seriously, then proper,
documented references to the “information”
should also have been included.
As the document stands, it is little more than a rant
about the proposed carbon tax. Many of the
statements made have more to do with sustainable
living than climate change. Whilst we are
powerless to do anything about volcanic eruptions
or raging bushfires which have been with us since
time immemorial, we can reduce our impact on
the environment by taking small measures to
ensure we reduce our reliance on finite resources.
A world population of more than 6 billion people
must have a very significant impact on the
environment/climate. As a wealthy country we can
take steps to ensure that industry takes a more
sustainable approach to its production by forcing
the big polluters to limit their impact on the
environment. Whilst it will no doubt have an
effect on our hip pockets, at least Australia can’t
be accused of not taking steps to reign in pollution
and carbon emission and who knows, we as
individuals might think more carefully about the
way we use resources if there is an additional cost
incurred.
And before I am accused of being a mouthpiece
for the carbon tax or the Gillard government, I am
not certain that the proposed scheme is the best
there is. It’s a pity that other viable models have
not been seriously discussed, but at this stage it’s
the only one on offer. Australia must make a start
sometime to reduce its impact on climate and the
environment. Whether a carbon tax is the best way
of doing this, only time will tell.
Depressing religious
views
just read the August issue of the
Yankalilla News, including the coldly
depressing article by Barry Steel on page 17.
I personally found Mr Steel’s article distasteful
and needlessly critical of other religions. He also
implied that only Christadelphian teaching is valid
and everyone else’s views are wildly inaccurate.
The superior arrogance of the item was astounding
and I can only guess at whatever possessed Mr
Steel to pen such a pessimistic and negative
discourse. Perhaps he fondly believed that normal
Christians would be so impressed with his learned
bible references they would feel compelled to join
the Christadelphians and forsake the alleged
corrupt teaching of their own personal faiths.
Should a hesitant reader be looking for an
uplifting church offering empathy, love and
compassion, my advice would be to continue
searching. However, if the article in question
raised a desire for more of the same, they would
not be disappointed with the Christadelphians.
Outcomes of the Community Consultation conducted by the
Southern Fleurieu Positive Ageing Taskforce
uring the months of March, April and May
D 2011 the Southern Fleurieu Positive
Ageing Taskforce engaged Dr Anne van Loon to
conduct a broad ranging consultation with older
people living on the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula
and Kangaroo Island. The consultation processes
included both face to face conversations and the
use of a replied paid survey which was available
at many locations throughout each community.
Anne’s report is now finalised.
The main findings are:
• Some people have difficulty in accessing
services due to lack of appropriate transport,
the high cost of some services (especially for
self funded retirees), and the difficulty of
finding the “right” person to answer their
questions;
• Loneliness and isolation of living alone is
problematic, especially for those who cannot
drive;
• Funding of some services is too inflexible
and cannot provide assistance such as house
cleaning or gardening;
• There are long waiting times in most areas
NORMANVILLE
Edward Avenue
for GP appointments;
• Accessing metropolitan health services can
be difficult due to transport issues, costs of
parking and inappropriate appointment
times;
• Numerous examples were provided of
people who had experienced inadequate
discharge plans from metropolitan and rural
hospitals. They had inadequate support and
care in place at home on discharge and were
unable to care for themselves when they
arrived home; and
• Across all regions there was concern about
safe access and mobility due to dangerous,
uneven, sloping, or absent footpaths, lack of
pedestrian crossings and difficulty crossing
busy main roads to get to services such as
shops.
The report makes a number of recommendations
for improving information flow about services to
the community. They include:
• The provision of regular articles in the local
newspaper;
t was with great pleasure that we
I welcomed Rose Gartleman to our
August session. This time our versatile
tutor was wearing her Pastel Bonnet’.
Rose talked about different types of
pastels and paper and answered many
interesting questions from the members.
The subject of her demonstration was
the sunlight coming through a rock gap
in Ormiston Gorge. She placed her
paper in the ‘portrait’ position to
emphasize the height of her chosen
subject. Rose made a rough drawing of
the subject and then proceeded to fill in
the darks, browns, reds and yellows of
the rock surfaces, working in between
the tree shaped and the light sky line.
Roe then concentrated on the trees,
trunk, branches and leaf canopy clearly
showing light and shade by using
greens, blue, white, purple, pink and
yellows pastels and very occasionally
black. The contrast between the
standing rocks the splash of sunlight
between then and the rocks and flora in
foreground brought the whole scene to
life. Rose’s work is always positive and
strong. She works with bold strokes
using strong colours and very rarely
blends her pastels. After lunch Rose
went round to help members when
required. The session was most
enjoyable with members pleased with
what they had achieved.
During the July session we had a
‘Challenge’ for those who did not join
the water colour group and with a little
arm twisting on my part, Rose agreed to
judge to judge the efforts. After a brief
critique of the five paintings, Diana was
declared the winner and received the
prize of $20. We hope that she spent it
wisely, congratulations Diana. Other
aspects of Rose Gartelman’s work can
be seen on display at Leonards Mill.
Next month is a very special session to
help and encourage our members to
Operation Poach
peration Poach is cracking down
on stock thieves, with police from
every rural Local Service Area out to
identify live-stock poachers.
Detective Senior Sergeant Sue Shearer
from the Hills/Fleurieu Local Service
Area says “the operation, which was
launched recently, is a long term
strategic approach to managing and
coordinating dedicated criminal
investigations throughout rural Local
Service Areas.”
“We will be visiting sale yard
proprietors to establish contacts and
encourage feedback to Police regarding
stock theft crime.”
“SAPol hopes to create partnerships
with people in the cattle and sheep
industry for the transfer of information
to Police.”
“If someone sees a truck full of sheep or
cattle in unusual circumstances note the
time, registration number and location,
it could turn out to be all above board
but its better that we are made aware of
it.”
Stock thefts cost Australia millions of
dollars annually. It also increases the
risk of stolen stock with fraudulent
health status papers entering the market,
which can potentially harm our
international trade.
Operation Poach will give the problem a
broad, coordinated approach across all
rural local service areas, rather than
concentrating efforts through a
traditional task force, or stock squad
approach.
Particularly vulnerable to theft are
sheep. Due to their massive numbers,
they are not entered on the national data
base that tracks cattle from birth to
destruction, plus they bring a good price
and are relatively easy to dispose of.
Operation Poach will run for 12 months.
theft is asked to please report it to police
Teens fall victim to sexting
olice are concerned about the
growing prevalence of sexting
among young people - particularly
teenagers who do not understand the
long-term consequences of this
behaviour.
Sexting is the act of sending provocative
or sexual photos, messages or videos
using mobile phones.
Teenagers of today need to be aware
that the consequences of sexting have
the potential to surface unexpectedly in
their adult lives.
“It isn’t simply a matter of changing
your name by deed poll later in your
adult life to escape the association with
these images. These images can carry
what amounts to a digital fingerprint,”
Detective Senior Sergeant Barry
Blundell from SAPOL’s Electronic
Crime Section said.
A common scenario occurs when
teenagers send naked pictures to each
other while in a relationship. When the
relationship has ended, one party
forwards the photos to others – or
distributes them via their social network
of online “friends”, that can number in
hundreds.
“The increase in adolescent sexting is a
result of a growing number of teenagers
owning smart phones – or mobile
phones equipped with cameras, video
and internet access,” Detective Blundell
said.
Under state child pornography laws, it is
a crime for anyone to transmit or
possess naked pictures of a person aged
under 16. For teens, this includes taking
and sending images of your own body.
Those found guilty of making and
sharing child pornography face penalties
of up to 10 years in prison and possible
registration on the sex offender registry.
For victims, particularly teens, there can
be long-term damage and permanent
consequences.
“Once these images are out there, you
have no control as to who will access
them or when." Detective Blundell said.
“These images may be viewed by
thousands of people across various
social media networks where
paedophiles can download them and add
them to their collection.”
Young people are high-end users of
Police Report
technology, and often are more
technically savvy than their parents.
“Children don’t understand the
consequences of sexting and parents
don’t understand the technology,”
Detective Blundell said.
Some teens have more than one mobile
phone and more than one Facebook
account – they may have one Facebook
account that their parents can access and
monitor, and another secret Facebook
account exclusively for their online
‘friends’.
“We are certainly seeing more
occurrences of sexting – however, we
know that teenage victims are often
reluctant to report this crime,” Detective
Blundell said.
“Instances have occurred where police,
in the process of identifying the owner
of lost property, have found these
images on mobile phones and charges
have been laid.”
In response to this issue, collaborative
learning approach between teens,
parents, schools and SAPOL is taking
place across the state. SAPOL works
with local schools to provide workshops
and presentations using lesson plans and
other resources designed by ACMA
through the cybersmart website – http://
I
The Teachings of Jesus Christ corrupted by the Church!
believe in the August edition we provided sufficient
information to allow you to see that Church teaching of
the earth being destroyed and human reward being in
heaven as being a complete concocted fallacy. You would
have noticed in the last issue that all of the scriptures
quoted define the location of the future divine kingdom to
be established as being ON earth and UNDER heaven.
This fact is also important in view of current notions
concerning the so-called rapture.
Vast Changes to Occur
Christ’s reign on earth will not be established without vast
and dramatic changes in the earth. The nations will not
readily submit to his rule, but will be humbled by the
outpouring of divine judgments in the wars of
Armageddon and its aftermath. The result will be a
political earthquake without precedence in history. The
present governmental order will be completely overthrown
to make way for Christ’s New World Order. Current
theories will be discarded whether they are communistic,
capitalistic, socialistic or democratic, and will be replaced
by a new, hitherto untried, system among Gentiles: the
theocratic. This will comprise a benevolent dictatorship
that will elevate God in the considerations of mankind,
whilst fully providing for the needs of humanity. It will be
established upon the basis of truth, thus bringing the facts
concerning divine revelation clearly to the attention of all
mankind. By such means, God’s purpose in creation will
be fulfilled, and "all the earth shall be filled with the glory
of the Lord" (Numbers 14:21).But though the
establishment of Christ’s rule on earth will instigate a
dramatic disruption to present conditions, and major,
worldwide changes, the so-called rapture will not be one
of these. As we have noted above, it is not a Biblical word.
Why then is it promoted so enthusiastically by a large
proportion of Christendom? It is because they have failed
to comprehend the basic teaching concerning Christ’s
second coming as outlined above, and have been led astray
by the wrong interpretation of a single passage of
Scripture.
The Rapture: A Human Fantasy
It is claimed that the doctrine of the rapture is taught in the
statement of 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18. Paul states: "But I
would not have you to be ignorant, concerning them which
are asleep [i.e. dead believers], that ye sorrow not, even as
others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus
died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in
Jesus, will God bring with him. For this we say unto you
by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and
remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent [lit.
"Precede"] them which are asleep. For the Lord himself
shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of
the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in
Christ shall rise first; then we which are alive and remain
shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to
meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the
Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words ".
This statement of the apostle Paul is a blend of literal and
figurative expressions which combine, very beautifully, to
express the purpose of God toward those who seek to
follow His Son. Unfortunately, confusion has resulted in
the minds of some, because they have failed to distinguish
the literal from the figurative, and therefore they set
Scripture against Scripture, and make it artificially
contradict itself. For example, the apostle describes a
meeting of the Lord "in the air", and concludes, "so shall
we ever be with the Lord." But other passages of Scripture
(some of which we have already mentioned) clearly reveal
that immortalised believers shall "reign on the
earth" (Revelation 5:10), and not in heaven (as some
interpret the words “in the air”). Indeed, it is specifically
stated that the dominion and sphere of rule will be ‘under
the heaven’ (Daniel 7:27)
Voice of Command
Consider some other teachings concerning Paul’s words in
1Thessalonians 4:13-18. He declared that the Lord will
return from heaven with "a shout, the voice of the
archangel, and the trump of God", and the dead in Christ
shall rise. From this, some imagine that the Lord will
return with a literal "shout", so loud and penetrating as to
"wake the dead", but this conflicts with other statements
that show that he will return "as a thief" (Revelation
16:15), and a thief certainly does not loudly announce his
presence upon arrival!
The word rendered "shout" in Greek is ‘keleusma’, which
signifies a call, or summons of authority, not necessarily
audible except in a special way to those to whom it is
specifically directed. In The Septuagint Greek Old
Testament, the same word is used in Proverbs 30:27, "The
locusts... at THE WORD OF Command march in rank."
The "word of command" (keleusma) which the locusts
obey, is the voice of
Instinct, and is only "heard" intuitively by those for whom
it is intended. The "shout" of 1Thessalonians 4:16 is a
divine word of command which will cause dead believers
to live again, and, certainly, will not be heard audibly by
others for whom it is not intended. An angel’s whisper can
wake the dead, when breathed by the command of He who
is "the resurrection and the life". This would be a "great
sound" of remarkable power, though inaudible to the
natural ears of mankind. The word really defines the voice
of God’s spirit acting upon His people who are waiting in
the "sleep" of the grave (cp. John 11:11-13). So it was that
at the epoch of creation, God spoke, and the earth brought
forth to His glory (Psalm 33:6-9); so at this moment of a
"new creation", Christ shall speak and those only will
“hear", to whom his words of life will be addressed: "The
hour is coming in which all that are in the graves shall hear
his voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good
unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil
unto the resurrection of condemnation " (John 5:28-29).
Rapid Bay & Districts Cricket Club Celebrates 40th Year
his year the Rapid Bay & Districts Cricket
T Club proudly celebrates it's 40th
anniversary. The club has a genuine grass roots
history having been founded from the remnants
of the Second Valley Colts and Delamere Colts
Cricket Clubs in 1971.
Over the generations, the club has produced many
fine cricketers, including Delamere local left arm
fast bowler Gary Putland who is a regular fixture in
the South Australian Redbacks team.
The genesis of the club dates back to the 1930's but
officially began as Rapid Bay & Districts in 1971.
Prior to that Mostyn Chenoweth and Glanville
Bartlett created the Delamere Colts, who without a
home ground of their own, played their home
games at the Yankalilla Oval under coach Richard
Murray who was a school teacher at Delamere. The
first boys to represent the new club were:
Robin Putland (c) Rodney Wenham
Peter Nicholls Gary Wenham
Peter Larkham Bob Hunt
Brian Bennett Peter Barton
Alex Christie Bruce Paxton
Raymond Hawke
Their first outing on October 12 1968 was against
Yankalilla at Yankalilla and was a tough initiation
to the game, most of the boys having never played
before. Delamere were bowled out for 54, 50 of
those runs coming from the bat of captain Robin
Putland, with Peter Larkham scoring 1, and the
Yank bowlers chipping in with 3 sundries. The
other nine batsmen were all dismissed for ducks!
Yankalilla went on to win the game despite
impressive debut bowling figures of 4/16 from
Brian Bennett. Remarkably, the two sides met again
in the grand final that year, the more experienced
Yankalilla again prevailing.
The club clearly showed promise and over the next
three seasons continued to
compete in the local
competition. Meanwhile in
the 1960's, BHP, operators
of the limestone quarry at
Rapid Bay, built the Rapid
Bay oval with turf wicket
for social use by it's quarry
employees. In September 1971 the Delamere Colts, in
conjunction with BHP overseer Snow Anderson,
undertook to lay a permanent wicket at the ground,
and the Rapid Bay & Districts Cricket Club was born.
The first official games at the ground were played on
October 16 1971 against Yankalilla, with colts in the
morning and B Grade in the afternoon. The B Grade
team was as follows:
Bob Hunt Brian Bennett
Mostyn Chenoweth (vc) Gary Wenham
David Hodge Des Lord (c)
Alex Christie Bruce Bennett
Barry Ellison Trevor Glynn
Trevor Hopgood
This time the Des Lord led Rapid Bay had more
success. Lord top scored with 51 n.o. in a total of 114,
and Rapid Bay bowled Yankalilla out for 51, David
Hodge doing most of the damage with the ball (3/14)
and Des himself returning tidy figures of 2/10.
The clubs first premiership came three years later in
1974 against Goolwa. The team list (pictured below)
was:
Dick Hamlyn (c) Brian Bennett
Bob Hunt Jon Weise
Martin Montgomery Mostyn Chenoweth
Peter Nicholls Des Lord
Peter Morris Rick Murton
‘Blue’ Elliot Linda Chenoweth
(scorer)
Goolwa batted first and made a formidable 292 despite
best efforts of Rapid Bay captain Dick Hamlyn
(5/103), Des Lord (2/31), and Brian Bennett (2/42).
Rapid Bay chased down the total thanks to a big 142
n.o. from the bat of Dick Hamlyn after being dropped
early in his innings, Bob Hunt with 57 and Peter
Nicholls with 50. More premierships followed with
Colts winning in 1989, 1991 and 1995 and C Grade in
1981 and 1992, together with 8 runners up honours
between all grades.
The Rapid Bay & Districts Cricket Club would like to
publicly thank all past and present members and
supporters of the club. We invite you to join us in
celebrating our 40th year; renew old memberships,
acquaintances, and perhaps introduce a new face to the
club. New players are needed for the forthcoming
season and all the usual social events planned, with a
formal function to recognise the clubs rich history later
in the season. For the first time in years, the club is
seeking sponsorship from local businesses in the
district, and welcomes any enquiries to Michael
Wickham on 85 985 241. We plan to keep the public
informed on match results via this publication, and
look forward to seeing you down the Bay from
September!
Yankalilla Historical Society
ne hundred and seventy-five
O years ago, on the 8th of
September, 1836, after calling in at
Kangaroo Island, Captain Light
landed at Rapid Bay. Named in
honour of the ship which had brought
him here, Captain Light was
“enchanted” with the area, its “fine
stream of fresh water and rich soil”
beyond his expectations. Dr. John
Woodforde (1810-66), who had been
appointed as a surgeon on board the
Rapid, kept a daily diary; much of
what we know of those early days is
gleaned from it, some of his
comments showing us his reactions,
such as, “…the cape … consists of
beautiful vallies (sic) and
corresponding hills. The soil is very
good and the grass growing in its
natural state is abundant”. Two days
later the ship’s officers dug a piece of
ground and planted seeds for a supply
of vegetables. Woodforde also
observed that there were many areas
of pasturage that seemed likely to
fatten livestock.
Soon after his arrival Captain Light
began surveying the peninsula, his
excursions eventually taking him
north to Holdfast Bay (Glenelg), and
eventually to Adelaide, Woodforde
noting that Holdfast Bay was given
its name after one of Light’s
exploratory groups had ridden out
two severe gales while moored there.
Throughout his stay in this area Dr.
Woodforde went hunting and fishing
in order to help keep up a supply of
fresh meat, and, in his diary,
described the fish and birds that were
new to him, some of them good
eating, others poor. On some of his
excursions he was accompanied by
Captain Field who later took up land
in this district.
On the 8th of October Dr. Woodforde
and his companions, on board the
“Rapid”, arrived at Yankalilla to pick
up two native women who had gone
on ahead to hunt game, in which they
were unsuccessful. Woodforde had
written in his diary that though the
women may have suffered from
hunger they were not so badly off
“always having the means of kindling
a fire.”
On October 12th Woodforde wrote
that the natives they had left to care
for the garden had proved honest and
were there to welcome them back and
claim their reward, the garden
“looking well and the seeds having
nearly all come up.” On the 13th he
spent his first night ashore, and on
the 14th was entertained when the
natives danced a corroboree, which
he described as “chiefly characterised
by feats of activity and violent
contortions of muscle having nothing
of grace in its composition … they
dance it to a very monotonous and
harsh kind of vocal music, constantly
repeating the same words.”
Throughout his diary Woodforde’s
view of the “first owners” of the
district are positive, as in “…the
Cape Jervis tribe have evinced much
goodwill and not the slightest
disposition to thieve. They are very
useful to us fetching our wood and
working in any way with great
cheerfulness.”
Meanwhile, the Rapid had been
sailing backwards and forwards
bringing surveyors and labourers
from Kangaroo Island. The party
then divided, some, including Dr.
Woodforde, remaining here, the
others sailing on to Holdfast Bay.
On 7th of November Dr. Woodforde
was called to attend Mrs. Hoare, the
wife of a labourer, when she gave
birth to a boy, the first white child
born in the colony. At Dr.
Woodforde’s request the child was
named Rapid. By mid November the
thermometer was rising to 118deg.,
and the flies were driving everyone
mad. By 4th of December some
within the group were showing signs
of scurvy which Dr. Woodforde
treated by distributing the potatoes a
sealing cutter had brought over from
Kangaroo Island. On 27th December
the guns of the Buffalo were heard as
it made its way up the gulf.
Dr. Woodforde also delivered the
first white girl born in the colony,
Fanny Lipson Finniss, when, on 2nd
January, he attended Mrs. Finniss, the
wife of Boyle Finniss, an assistant
surveyor to Colonel Light . When
the news that Governor Hindmarsh
had arrived at Adelaide reached
them, Dr. Woodforde could not
consent to Mrs. Finniss taking the
journey for at least eight days more.
The group divided into two parties,
Dr. Woodforde remaining. On 17th
January he accompanied Mr. Finniss
and his party on a walk to the high
land above Cape Jervis where they
enjoyed the view across to Kangaroo
Island. On January 22nd he and his
group sailed on the Cygnet to
Holdfast Bay which by that time was
becoming known as Glenelg. From
there he walked to Adelaide, and
back, pleased with Colonel Light’s
selection of its site.
Community Bus Service
pring is officially here and the
S Tourist season is on our
doorstep. The year ahead is critical to
the future of this service. At present it
is not being supported as well as
public opinion and response led us to
believe it would be - at its inception.
You may not think this service has
anything to do with you, but it does.
There are people in the community
who need the service. Some already
access it on a regular basis. Some
would like to do so but need a little
encouragement from a friend or
neighbour to start, it is always about
numbers. On a financial plan it is the
smallest number possible. With the
bus it is also about the least number
viable to warrant continuing the
service.
Those who volunteer to spend a day
once every month or two need the
support of others for a 'pool' large
enough to fill in for them if they
cannot make their scheduled day.
Need to know where the bus goes?
Your nearest bus stop? The how,
when and why? Ring Gary Crook at
Celebrating with our newest ‘Aussies’
here was excitement at Inman Quilters when
T member Linda Morris, together with her
husband Keith and daughter Claire, became
Australian Citizens on Friday 12th August 2011.
Linda and her family arrived in Victor Harbor in
January 2007 from Johannesburg, South Africa
and Linda soon became involved in the
community. As well as joining Inman Quilters
and her local church, Linda became involved
with the Cancer Support and Resource Group
where, until recently, she carried out the duties
of Treasurer.
A few
At their meeting on Tues 16th August, Inman
Quilters group decided to surprise Linda with an
“Australian” morning tea. The church hall at
Inman Valley was decorated with Australian
flags and vases of wattle adorned the morning
tea table with lamingtons, pumpkin scones and
Iced VoVo biscuits forming part of the spread.
But the surprise was on the group as Linda
arrived laden with vegemite sandwiches, small
meat pies, tomato sauce, FIVE different flavors
of Tim Tams, amongst other bits and pieces and,
her very first pavlova which I can personally
report was excellent!! So morning tea turned
into a very long lunch.
We congratulate Linda, Keith and Claire and
welcome them as our “newest Aussies”.
Who remembers “Millie”?
By Nigel Duncan
irstly well done to our members
F (new and old) for rallying
together to make our August rally a
success. Jacky and Holly were faced
with there very first rally as rally
day coordinators and did an amazing
job. Even with turning up and
realising we were down one
instructor the girls did a fantastic job
of recruiting helpers on the ground
and the day was a complete success
with everyone stepping up to help
out be it in the kitchen or instructing
groups on the ground. From all
reports everyone had a great time
and we even managed to feed
everyone which was great. A big
thank you to the dads in the kitchen.
What would we do without you
(Gary, Darren, Bob, Paul and
James). The guys are always on
hand from the start of the day with
cleaning, preparing, cooking and
even serving all our hungry lot.
Thanks to Tanya, Katrina and Sam
for helping with instruction. The
riders enjoyed flatwork, games
training and some mock hacking
pointers. The lessons were
invaluable as many of our riders
used what was practiced at the
recent Zone Finals at Monarto on the
13th and 14th of August.
We had several of our riders
compete at Monarto being Caitlan
Lloyd, Amy Lloyd, Kasey Lloyd,
Cody Hanak and Tamika Francis.
The team were coached by Katrina
Lloyd who helped them win there
first ever PC Zone Finals A grade
Games in the history of the club. An
amazing achievement for this group
of kids.
The feedback from the kids is that
they had a fantastic weekend and
really enjoyed the atmosphere, the
coaching and especially the support.
We also had Caitlan Lloyd, Tamika
Francis and Georgina Fisher
competing in the Monarto Junior
Horse and Rider at the Southern
Zone finals with Caitlan taking out
first place, Tamika placing 4th and
Georgina coming 15th so an
amazing achievement. Amy Lloyd
also paticipated in the C grade show
jumping at the event with her
gorgeous mount Jazz.
Lets not forget Ruby Mayers who
also made the long trek up to
Monarto and placed third with her
team in A grade games. Ruby would
normally be part of the FHPC games
team but because of her recent
success in being chosen for the Pony
Club Nationals she was not eligible
to ride in the same group but she still
did an amazing job at competing in
the A side and placing third.
We are very proud of all our
members. We have so many rising
stars out there competing and
regularly coming home with
ribbons. Our club has representation
at many equestrian disciplines be it
through the Southern Vales
Dressage Club, Strathalbyn Show
jumping, Stock Horse Association,
Olympic Games in Sydney. Millie
the Echidna was our international
mascot and in that brief time became
known world-wide. But even with all
the “attention” there is much not known
about them.
Commonly known as spiny anteaters,
and although resembling porcupines,
and hedgehogs from the northern
hemisphere, they are distinctly
different. The name Echidna is derived
from the Greek ekhis, “the mother of
all monsters”, half woman, half snake
Mounted Games and many of the
SA gymkhana's and hacking events.
We also have some of our members
planning to ride at the Royal
Adelaide Show and our local
Yankalilla Show so keep an eye out
there.
So not only do most of our members
catch up through our monthly gettogethers
they are also out there
supporting each other at many
events which is fantastic. Over the
last year or so we have been able to
see our younger members participate
in these outside competitions and to
see how these group of kids have
improved and become real
contenders has been amazing.
They've inspired some of us oldies
(not so old) to get out there and have
a go as well. We don't bounce like
we use to but that doesn’t stop us.
The club has a great representation
of adult riders and is always looking
to take on more. The adult members,
family and friends have been a great
support to the kids and act as
positive role models whilst still
managing to have some fun and are
just as competitive as the younger
ones.
Our club is open for tiny tots
through to the young at heart and we
try to cater for all your horsey needs.
I'm proud to say that we have a great
bunch of people and are very
supportive of all our riders so if you
are looking for a great club why not
check us out. You'll be made very
and mother to most of the Greek
mythological monsters.
Echidnas grow to 50 cm long and 2.5-7
kg in weight. They have a distinctive
elongated snout which doubles as both
welcome.
Just check out our out and about
page and our website to see some of
our photos and success stories.
Last but not least the club are
extremely proud of the following
members who have excelled in there
recent endeavours. We have Georgia
Byrne who has been chosen for the
Interschool show jumping team. Our
five riders (Caitlan Lloyd, Amy
Lloyd, Kasey Lloyd, Cody Hanak
and Tamika Francis) who will be
making the trip to Keith for the State
Finals and Ruby Mayers who has
been chosen to compete in the Pony
Club Nationals riding mounted
games in Werribee Victoria. This is
an amazing achievement for these
kids and we are extremely proud.
Whether they come home with
ribbons or not they are already
winners in our eyes.
mouth and nose, a long tongue, which
as the common name implies, is
excellent for catching its staple diet of
termites and ants.
Characteristically they are covered in
spines which are modified hairs. The
gait is distinctive and awkwardlooking
, more reptilian due to the
shared feature of the legs at the sides of
the body instead of beneath as in the
marsupials and placentals mammals.
Although still considered by many as
primitive they have a large brain case
and do in fact have the same level of
intelligence as a cat. They are longlived
reaching 40 years or more.
The Echidna belongs to a small group
known as monotremes, which together
with the marsupials and placentals are
classified as members of the Class
Mammalia. The ancestor of these
three, a proto-mammal, arose at
approximately the same time as the
dinosaurs, approx 245 million years
ago, and were dispersed across the then
united super continent of
Gondwanaland. Approximately 140
million years ago, and prior to the
breakup of Gondwanaland, the
monotremes diverged from the main
proto-mammal line. The Echidna its
self is currently believed to have split
from a platypus-like water-foraging
ancestor 19-48 million years ago and
returned to the land. The fossil jaw of
one on these ancestors dated back to
110 million years, has been found at
Lightning Ridge in NSW.
Today the monotremes survive only in
Australia and New Guinea. The iconic
Platypus is found only in Australia. The
long-beaked Echidna is restricted to
New Guinea, while the Short -beaked
Echidna is found in Australia and with
a limited range in New Guinea.
Within Australia the Echidna is the
most widespread of the mammals and
is found from the mountain peaks and
forests to the grasslands and deserts.
Solitary for most of the year they
forage over a home range of 9-190
hectares which may overlap with a
number of other individuals. They are
selective feeders rotating through the
home range foraging for up to 18 hours
per day, travelling 1-2 km and
excavating up to 1000 digs. In the
process they contribute to soil aeration,
the spread of mycorrhiza, nutrient
mixing and seed germination.
For the Australian Short-beaked the
powerful claws come into their own,
particularly to rip into ant and termite
nests exposing the galleries of eggs.
Here the long sticky worm-like tongue
is ideally suited to the task of food
gathering.
Given the opportunity Echidnas show a
preference for a dense under story
which provides not only protection but
a warm dry area in winter and cool in
summer. Caves, logs and rabbit
burrows can be used as home.
The monotremes are a unique group.
Like their relatives the marsupials and
placentals they are characteristically
warm –blooded. All three provide their
young with milk, but unlike the others
the monotremes lay eggs.
Echidnas are solitary by nature, do not
fight or defend territory and basically
ignore other individuals they encounter.
However come spring and the females
waft forth a
pheromone
courtship
invitation. A
number of males
take up the
invitation and
form echidna
courtship trains with a female in the
lead followed by commonly two to six
males. These trains may persist for one
to six weeks during which time males
can loose 25% of their body weight.
Meantime after a gestation period of
about 23 days the female lays a single
egg directly into the “pouch” where it
remains for an incubation period of 10-
11 days. The pouch itself is not a
permanent pocket and milk is secreted
through a number of non-localised
mammary glands along the elongate
edge of the “pouch”. The young
‘puggle’ as they are called, is carried,
and given milk for 50-60 days at which
time it has grown too big, not to
mention the emerging spines!
The mother then stashes the puggle
away in a nursery burrow. However it
is still totally dependant upon the
mother for subsistence who will return
every 5-6 days for a period of a couple
of hours during which time the puggle
can ingest up to 40% of its own weight
in one sitting. As the mother leaves she
blocks and conceals the entrance to
thwart predators. This cycle is repeated
for the next seven months until junior is
weaned and ready to leave home.
Despite all its strangeness the Echidna
has been a real survivor. Its success has
been put down to a controlled birth rate
thereby preventing overpopulating and
consequently not competing amongst
themselves for the food resources. With
their colour and shape they blend into
the surroundings and are a master of
camouflage. In fact they are not
uncommon in urban areas but rarely
“seen.”
With their intimidating appearance the
adults present a prickly problem to any
predator with thoughts of a quick a-lacarte
meal. The adults and more
particularly the highly vulnerable
burrow young have a number of natural
predators including goannas, quolls
(native cats), Tasmanian devils, dingos
and large snakes. Imported predators
have a significant impact and include
dogs, cats, foxes and feral pigs.
Research work on Kangaroo Island
reports a 20% loss of both burrow
young and adults to cats.
Additional to this predation the Echidna
Watch Program reports that 20% of all
sightings are road kills. Although not
endangered as yet, the pressure is
mounting with expanding development.
‘Any man can be a father. It takes
someone special to be a dad.’
W
atching the TV program, ‘The world’s strictest
parents,’ I was intrigued by the response of a
rebellious teen-ager who had flown to Jamaica to join
a very strict family for a week. They said, ‘Please call
us Mum and Dad.’ He said, ‘I cannot do that – I
vowed I’d never use the word “Dad” again.’
Dud dads have a lot to answer for. Anders Breivik
who bombed and gunned down innocent people in
the Norwegian massacre was deserted by his dad at
birth and lost all contact when he was 16. Not a good
start for a young guy!
What about all the rioting kids in Britain? Where
were their dads?
A chaplain to the infamous Pentridge Prison once
said that almost every criminal in there cursed his
father.
I remember a lad who was let down by his dad. He
said he was going interstate to find him.
I said, ‘Your Dad’s not worth it.’
The boy, with fire in his eyes, said, ‘But what you
need to know is - he’s the only father I’ll ever have.’
That’s the cold fact: we only have one Dad. Curse
him, hate him or whatever - he’s our Dad.
Good Dads
Kids crave a good Dad. Good Dads makes all the
difference. But, none are perfect.
I knew a young fellow who lost his Dad. His father
was a truck driver who deliberately drove it off the
road one day to miss an oncoming car. He was killed,
but the mother and baby in the car were spared.
Bereft of his Dad, he was left with powerful respect
for one who gave his life to save others.
Fathers can give of themselves in very constructive
ways - time, attention, affection and involvement.
Let’s invest in our kids. The dividends are high.
Dads, remember you’re the only Dad your kids will
have. Example the best of fatherhood so they will
know what good parenting is all about. We don’t
have to be heroic. It’s all about being humble and
committed.
Billy Graham said, ‘A good father is one the most
valuable assets in our society.’
To those let down: appreciate your dad gave you a
chance to live. You’re here because of him. Maybe he
was let down. Who knows what made him what he is.
Learn from his mistakes and do things better.
Forgiving a failed father helps both of you find
healing and reconciliation.
‘Our Father’
The Bible says, ‘Have we not all one Father? Did not
one God create us?’ We chose neither father nor
creator.
God is the genius of fatherhood and family. A loving
family relationship – with father, mother and children
was our maker’s intention. Children raised in such an
environment are truly blessed.
To the great detriment of society and distress of
personal well being, family life is suffering and
fatherhood, in many instances, has failed. The
strength of a nation can be measured by the health of
its families.
Family
To all who struggle with parentage, identity, failure
and disappointment, the Bible refers us to another
important relationship – the family of God.
Dud Dads
An exciting text in the Bible says: ‘How great is the
love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be
called children of God! 1 John 3:1
We can know God as ‘Father’ through Jesus, His
Son. Jesus said, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through me.’ He
also said, ‘I and the Father are one.’ (John 14:6,
10:30)
In his famous prayer Jesus taught his disciples to
pray, ‘Our Father in heaven…’
Jesus can forgive failed fathers and help kids and
mums who struggle. He came from God to redeem
sinful man. Through him we can be adopted into the
family of God.
The rebellious kid said, ‘I vowed never to call anyone
“father” again.’ There’s a wonderful promise to
believers in the Lord Jesus Christ: ‘… but you
received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry,
"Abba, Father." The Spirit himself testifies with our
spirit that we are God's children.’ Rom 8:15-16
‘God is Spirit,’ said Jesus. True Christianity is an
inward experience of God – a new birth – a new
relationship. That is why Jesus said, ‘You must be
born again.’
Do you belong to God’s family? You can!
I don’t
Books and Words Group
know if it is that I am getting older but
the winters seem to be getting longer and
colder, I can not wait for summer to return. Of
course summers mean sailing. On the 4th of June
the sailing club held its annual dinner and trophy
night at the Min Palace Restaurant in
Normanville. It was a great evening with good
food and much jocularity. The winners of the
three sailing divisions were Roy Douglas for the
big cat division, Ian McDonald for the medium
cat division and Dave Herraman for the dinghy
and small cat division. Well done to all trophy
winners. We as a club continue to attract new
members so our racing will become even more
competitive in the coming season.
The next event on our calendar was our AGM
held at The Links Lady Bay on the 12th of
August. The management kindly let us use one of
their conferences rooms for our meeting. Our
ary Eves owner of P Drive School of
G Motoring has come up with some helpful
advice that will help clients and readers
understand the options available to those who
would like to get their P1 Provisional Licence.
Applicants under 25 who have applied for their
Learners Permit since September 4th 2010 must
hold their Learners Permit for a year. If over the
age of 25 it is 6 months.
There are two ways to qualify for your P1
Provisional Licence. You can either pass a
practical test known as the Vehicle-On-Road
Test (VORT) or undertake the Competency
Based Training & Assessment (CBT&A).
The CBT&A requires 29 tasks to be signed off
council CEO, Roger Sweetman was present to
detail possible relocation of the sailing club. Our
club storage facility is currently located in the
Jetty Road Caravan Park and because of the
proposed future redevelopment of the park our
shed it seems must go. Our meeting then went on
to elect a new executive and committee. The
office bearers elected were, Commodore, Barry
Muir; Vice Commodore, Gavin Schubert;
Secretary, George Reeves; Treasurer, Steve
Rogers; Social Secretary, Barbara Matthews and
Publicity Officer, Tony Proctor.
During the meeting it was agreed to trial a few
out of season sailing days, weather permitting. I
am personally a fair weather sailor. This summer
we will be actively trying to raise funds for the
club by holding raffles so if on the beach a lovely
young lady jangles a tin for a raffle ticket, please
give generously for a small active local club. A
Need a Driving Licence?
The VORT test requires the same high quality of
driving, but does not require the tasks to be
signed off. The skills learnt are assessed on the
final vehicle on road test. Gary has found that
drivers who are prepared to practise their driving
in-between his professional lessons, prefer this
method.
Both methods require 75 hours of driving,
signed off by an eligible supervised driver.
Check the Government website for requirements
of a supervised driver at
www.mylicence.sa.gov.au
Both methods require an end test to get the P1
Provisional Licence.
Gary has the latest National Cert IV
qualification in Road Transport Driving
Instruction and his main goal is to teach
professional driving skills to clients, not only so
they pass the test, but to become a safe and
responsible driver, especially on the country
roads of the Fleurieu Peninsula.
Most parents will invest a lot time and money
into their child’s education, learning to drive
correctly is something they should also invest in,
so their son or daughter will have life-time skills
behind the wheel of a car.
A group
Op Shop changes
of retiring and remaining
volunteers gathered to say farewell to
Jean Collins (2nd from right) who has
managed the Op Shop for the past 10 months.
Jean is retiring mainly for health reasons.
We would like to thank all those who have
supported us in the past and look forward to
your continuing support.
reminder to members the Sunday of the October
long weekend will be a maintenance and BBQ
day at the club shed. In closing a reminder that
we are always looking for new members wether
sailing or social, you would be surprised how
much fun you can have. See you all on the beach.
y name is Elise Lavers, and I am
M a Yankalilla local working at
Jetty Food Store and Studying a
Bachelor of Health Sciences/ Bachelor
of Secondary Education at Flinders
University.
I grew up in Jamestown; a typical
farming community in the Southern
Flinders Ranges. The whole town is in
existence thanks to the fertile soils,
open plains and reliable rainfall that
make conditions perfect for the mixed
farming of cereal crops and livestock.
Some of my fondest memories of
growing up are of days spent yabbying
in friends’ dams, bike riding the maple
trail in Bundaleer forest, and counting
lambs tails for pocket money at the end
of a long days’ tailing and drenching
(for $1 per hundred tails; big business!).
Jamestown was first recognised as
arable farming land by South
Australia’s surveyor-general, George
W. Goyder. In 1865, Goyder plotted a
line across South which separated the
land that received more than 10inches
of annual rainfall from the land that
didn’t. As Jamestown has always been
South of Goyder’s line, where rainfall
is sufficient for successful crops, when
I first heard that climate change was
threatening to shift the line south of
Jamestown towards Clare……..I was
shocked. For the first time, I was no
longer seeing climate change as just
another issue for developing nations
that I couldn’t do much about, but as a
real issue that could potentially end
farming shut down my hometown. As I
tried to express my concerns to friends,
my words were often dismissed with a
casual laugh and: “ah Lavers, you’re
such a greenie!”. I felt alone in caring,
so being a young teenager, I decided
Climate Change
there was nothing I could do and it
slipped away from the front of my
mind.
After obtaining a scholarship to board
at Walford School in 2007, I decided to
join the school’s environmental
committee. We ran cake stalls,
sponsored an orangutan, painted
banners, and started battery, fluorescent
light bulb and newspaper recycling
programs at our school. It wasn’t much,
but it was enough to give me my selfish
fix of warm-fuzzies by “doing my little
bit”.
It wasn’t until this year, my first year of
university study, that I realised it was
no longer enough to just “do my little
bit”. I joined the Flinders
Environmental Action Group (FEAG)
and the Flinders Action Group for the
Australian Youth Climate Coalition
(FLAG), run by Yankalilla local, Isaac
Astill. While only in its beginnings,
FLAG has already run two successful
sign up events, where we spoke with
many fellow students and lecturers
about the benefits of a price on
pollution. We also collected hundreds
of signatures, which we took to a
personal meeting with Federal Labor
MP Anne McEwan to show the youth
support behind a strong carbon tax with
direct investment in renewable
energies. However, despite our work,
there still seems to be a lack of urgency
amongst the population for taking
action on climate change.
I was recently selected by the
Australian Youth Climate Coalition as a
field co-ordinator for the up-coming
Powershift in Brisbane. Powershift is a
youth climate conference/festival,
which will run from the 15th-17th of
October. The program has not yet been
confirmed, though it will consist of
workshops and talks from influential
speakers, before a mass public action at
the conclusion of the conference. In
Sydney’s 2009 Powershift, Al Gore
was one of the key speakers via videolink,
and the public action was a large
flash mob dance with thousands of
youth volunteers on the steps of the
Sydney Opera House, which gained
substantial media attention (with over
134,000 youtube views on one of the
clips alone!).
From what I have seen and heard,
Powershift conferences have the ability
to educate, connect, and inspire young
people to take further action on climate
change within their communities. As a
field co-ordinator, it is my role to
ensure that as many people as possible
are given the opportunity to attend this
year’s Brisbane conference. The
conference is open to anyone under 30.
The early-bird tickets for the three day
conference are $65, and if you require
further financial assistance for travel, I
can help you seek sponsorship. You
don’t have to be a “greenie”. You don’t
have to be a political activist. You don’t
have to be a student. We just want
people who are willing to join us and
become inspired!
The voice of concerned youth is not
being sufficiently represented, so it is
we, the youth, who need to speak up
now to re-shape the debate. It is us who
will have to deal with the consequences
of inaction, so I am making it my
mission to help other young people
move from apathy to taking action on
climate change. I believe that
Powershift is an event that has the
ability to achieve this. If you would like
to get some more information on
Powershift or the Australian Youth
Climate Coalition, feel free to e-mail
me.
Will YOU come to Powershift with
me?
Please do not hesitate to contact me
with any questions you may have.
