Welcome
from the artistic director
A living art should move, take risks, and
reach—ever searching for ways to reflect
and impact the world around it. In this theatre
you, our audience, our community—you are
our world.
Why have you come? What experience are
you hoping for? And what are you bringing
to it? Music is an incredible vehicle for larger
ideas when people are present to actually
hear it. You know . . . the whole tree falling in
the forest thing.
In a living theatre, communication flows both
ways; just as you are listening, know that
we too are listening . . . to you. So let’s all
be present, here, in this theatre, together—
moving, reaching, listening . . . and then let’s
hang at the BYO afterward and talk about
what we heard.
Every Bone Has a Memory . . . Jung Yoon Wie
Remembrance . . . Rufus Reid
Shell & Wing . . . David Biedenbender
in partnership with the American Composers Forum
Jung Yoon Wie
This is my first attempt to write about my own experiences. (A short confession—I don’t think
I love music as much as I should.) I wrote this piece in order to love music by telling my own
stories and making music relevant to myself. This piece tells a story about my questions and
doubts about music and life—exactly where I am!
Rufus Reid
I wrote Remembrance because I was finally given the opportunity to attempt to bridge two
important genres—America’s own art form, jazz, and contemporary European classical music—
into one cohesive chamber work. I have always been drawn to a beautiful melody and an
infectious rhythm, and Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, and Leonard Bernstein all knew how to
satisfy these attributes.
David Biedenbender
Shell and Wing emerged as a collaboration with my friend and fellow father, poet Robert
Fanning. His poem gave voice to the ambiguity and conflict I feel as a parent—a profound
longing to protect my children coupled with the knowledge that I must also let them go. The first
poem is in a parent’s voice—my own. The second is in a child’s voice—my sons’ .
What
I leave
behind
And if thou wilt, remember…
Nullipara. . . D.J. Sparr
text by Caitlin Vincent
Memorial . . . Ivette Herryman
painting detail —Scott Hunter
Caitlin Vincent
Infertility is a very private struggle, essentially invisible to the naked eye; yet it’s part of the
lives of more than six million women across the United States. I wanted to give that struggle
a face and a voice but also to acknowledge that our Nullipara represents just one story out of
millions that could be told.
D.J. Sparr
In 2016, after years of us trying to have a child, my wife was diagnosed with an early stage of
cervical cancer. Not to be defeated, we adopted a baby boy who was placed with us when he
was only 12 weeks old through the foster-to-adopt system. Now 17 months old, our family is
thriving and happy, and I wrote this piece to give voice to a journey that has been shared by so
many families.
Ivette Herryman
Inspired by one of my favorite works, Dido’s lament from Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Memorial
gives voice to one of humanity’s most shared yearning. I’m particularly touched by the
moment in which the singer sings “remember me”—a cry that comes from the deepest part of
one’s soul. I think of it as a collective cry; we all have a longing to be remembered.
“i want to live” . . . david lang
“I want to live” is from an evening-length piece called “SHELTER” that looks at different ways we think of
shelter in our lives —a place, a need, a feeling, something we may have, something we may lack. It occurred
to me that the sentence “I want to live where you live” could take on many of those meanings.
“If this world would stop” from FACES . . . Lee Kesselman
Tonight, there are three snapshots of interior life from my FACES—all explore the gap between the faces
people show and the ones they keep to themselves. “If this world could stop” is the voice of the overlooked
one, the the one who just wants to fit in and be noticed.
“Amor “. . . William Bolcom
A woman steps out on the town . . . and is noticed.
“yes I said yes I will Yes” . . . Amy Beth Kirsten
The text is about self-abandon and the end of all resistance.
“I am writing poetry” . . . Lee Kesselman
The intense rock-and-roll shout of a voice on the edge of self-harm and destruction.
“Covenant” . . . Jeffrey Nytch
A covenant is sacred, timeless, its warmth enough to melt the frost on our tombstone.
“The Country Wife” . . . Kieren MacMillan
“The Country Wife” is about the journey towards joy and finding relief (or release) from life’s sometimesoverwhelming
burdens.
“i live in pain” . . . david lang
The piece is a love song describing an intense longing for a lover who is no longer there.
PNME History
PAST
Founded in 1976 by the great David Stock, the
Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble is the secondoldest
continually performing professional new
music ensemble in the country. With an astonishing
300-plus commissions and world premieres to date,
PNME’s legacy is vast.
PRESENT
Music on its own can be incredible, but when
placed in the right context, the whole can be greater
than the sum of its parts. Our immersive Theatre of
Music production style has now influenced groups
all over the world. We are about to take it further. . .
FUTURE
Using a special microphone we call “Michel” (he’s
Swiss-German.. and very Euro) and headphones
for each audience member, we are exploring the
expressive powers of proximity and location as core
elements of musical expression. The Gray Cat and
the Flounder is only the first tentative step. You won’t
believe what what we are going to do in the future!
2015 commission by Joseph Newcomer in memory of his wife Bernadette G. Callery
music by Kieren MacMillan
story by Kevin Noe & Kieren MacMillan
inspired by “The Gray Cat and the Flounder” by Joseph Newcomer
Kevin Noe & Kieren MacMillan
The attempt to honor a person’s life through a work of art is both a privilege
and a humbling experience.
When we first started working on The Gray Cat and the Flounder years ago,
neither of us could have imagined how much the work would come to
mean to us. The crying, laughing, and searching that we have done during
the creative process has taught each of us something more about the lives
we want to lead; it’s made our long friendship even richer.
We are honored to have known Bernadette Gabrielle Callery
(aka the “Gray Cat”) and to know her husband Joe Newcomer
(aka the “Flounder”). Although we learned more about who
Bernadette was after her passing than we did while she was
alive, we hope that something of her spirit
and cleverness lives on in this
dedicated work.
Join Our Family
Greetings, and welcome to PNME’s 43rd season!
Connecting the art that we present with the
people who come to experience it is what we are
all about at PNME. As that connection deepens
and multiplies with each passing summer, more
and more I find that folks are asking us how they
might give back.
Whether it be through a financial contribution,
volunteering, or serving on our board of directors,
we believe everyone can play a part in helping
our Lime Green Family grow. If you’d like to know
more about ways you might play a more active
role, please seek me out or reach out to any
member of our board or artistic team. I’ll save a
seat for you downstairs after the show!
B Y O to every show. . .
Board President
Friends—let’s break bread together.
Join us after the show!
