The <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Development</strong> <strong>Unit</strong> (<strong>CDU</strong>) is a multi-disciplinary service staffed by paediatricians<br />
with developmental training and experience, and allied health professionals including<br />
educational psychologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, medical social<br />
workers, learning support teachers and a physiotherapist. Our aims are to provide<br />
holistic care for children with developmental, learning and behavioural issues. Services<br />
include assessments, diagnostic and intervention services, through a family-centred and<br />
community-based approach. We assist children through working closely with schools and<br />
other service providers to support their needs.<br />
<strong>Child</strong>ren under 7 years old with developmental, learning or behavioural concerns can be<br />
referred to <strong>CDU</strong>. Conditions include difficulties or delays in the following:<br />
� Gross motor development (including delays in sitting, crawling, walking etc.)<br />
� Fine motor development (including handwriting delays)<br />
� Speech and language development<br />
� Overall development (including global delays or<br />
intellectual disability from<br />
genetic causes e.g. Down Syndrome)<br />
� Attention and Activity Levels (including possible<br />
Attention Deficit<br />
and Hyperactivity Disorder)<br />
� Socialisation (including Autistic Spectrum<br />
Disorder)<br />
� Temperament and Behaviours (including temper<br />
tantrums, the shy child etc.)<br />
� School difficulties or readiness for school<br />
(related to behavioural and/ or<br />
academic difficulties)<br />
� Evaluation and continuing care for<br />
premature infants.<br />
