‘of the nature of an ultimate constituent; simple; uncompounded’<br />
<strong>Mark</strong> <strong>Godwin</strong>’s work is deeply rooted in landscape. In his ‘<strong>Elemental</strong>’ series, he uses intense<br />
bands of richly-textured colour to imply, rather than define, the elements of land, sea and sky.<br />
These paintings can be read in many different ways.<br />
<strong>Mark</strong> <strong>Godwin</strong> was born in Birmingham in 1957, and started his career as a print-maker,<br />
before pursuing his own artistic vision as a painter. He now works from a studio in East<br />
Sussex. He finds particular inspiration in the sea and coastline, and the concept of the<br />
‘sublime’ underpins his work.
