Dear Friends
Our Minister's Letter
You know you're getting old when....the doctors at the
hospital look like high school work experience students, when
you think young people must be cold in their party outfits,
when you start telling people how it was or what you
remember "in my day", you've just figured out how to set the
video recorder and now we don't have videos!
I found another one, perhaps that applies to me only, but I've
noticed people mucking around changing the words to my
favourite Christmas carols and it just isn't the same! I
remember years ago after a Christmas Eve midnight service
a man came up to me with tears in his eyes and told me that I
had ruined his Christmas. Why? Because we hadn't sung
"Hark the Herald Angels Sing". So many people sing the
carols each year and it brings a sense of the season to them,
some sense of comfort and warmth. Maybe it is that sense
of looking back to better days, whether they be childhood or
other, when Christmas was magical. So, I don't want my
good old carols messed about.
BUT why not learn some new carols to go with the old ones?
There are lots of them out there and so seldom do they get a
nod. Why not? Let's give them a try because carols will never
become old favourites if we don't sing them.
I wish you all joy and peace this Christmas and hope for a
happy 2012. May we all try new things in 2012, so we
don't become "old" no matter what our age.

Church News
10 Years On
10 years ago we were beginning the start
of a new chapter at St James's.
The vacancy was finally over and Joan
and Monty had arrived. Joan's first service
was on Advent Sunday, which seemed
very appropriate as we all began our
preparation for Christmas and a future
together at St James's. What a lot has
happened since then …….
Each of us knows what we have especially
valued and appreciated in Joan's ministry;
but above all we are indebted to her for her energy and vision in the
re-development of our buildings and the subsequent ministry we are able to
offer to our local community.
Thank you, Joan, from the bottom of our hearts, for your friendship and
encouragement, your leadership and your teaching over the past 10 years.
Actions by Christians Against Torture
"Greeting Cards at Christmas"
As a congregation we have agreed to support to this group for at least one
year. One of the best ways we can show our support is by sending to victims
of torture a greetings card at Christmas.
On Sunday 27 th November a new display board (opposite the lift) will
explain how we will do this and then on Sunday December 4 th every
member or family will be handed a slip of paper indicating who they can
send a card to. There are 21 names so it will be a random distribution.

All the instructions for writing and posting the card are included and all you
have to do is write your message and send it to the address provided.
Of course you are free to decide for yourself whether you wish to send a
card to the person given to you by this random method but for those who
do, it will be much appreciated by the persons who receive them, as all of
them are victims of mental and physical torture and many have been in
prison without trial for several years. By sending these cards we can let them
know that they are not forgotten and offer them solace and comfort at
Christmas
Christmas Shoe Boxes
Many thanks to everyone who put together and
gave items for the boxes. I know they will all be
much appreciated by the recipients.
St James’s Autumn Fair
Ger trude Jones
This year’s
Autumn Fair
was set in a
much more
challenging
economic
climate than
last year so it
speaks
volumes about
the hard work
that went in to it to be able to report that we again had a most successful
morning and grossed over £1,100. A very big thank you to everybody who
helped in any way at all to make our fair such a success.
Good weather on the day may have helped but it was very cheering to see
Northumberland Hall so full and buzzing with chat and activity and
especially noticeable, at least to me, was the fact that we had lots of visitors
and support from many of the churches in and around Alnwick.
LIBC Tombola
May I through Pottergate News, thank all who so generously donated prizes
to the LIBC Tombola stall at the recent Autumn fair. We had a wonderful
response to our appeal and raised a creditable £211.
On behalf of the lady bowlers, our sincere thanks to you all.
Joan Rutter.

Queen's Diamond Jubilee Celebration
26 th May 2012
As well as Afternoon Tea, we would like to have an exhibition celebrating 60
church, asking if they have any memorabilia to contribute. In addition,
members of the congregation can contribute not only photographs but
objects, e.g. christening robes, wedding dresses etc. We need people to help
put this exhibition together by searching church archives and selecting items
for display and we hope to get started on this as soon after Christmas as
possible. Anybody able to assist please contact Pauline.

Church Walks
Ros Castle
Walk
Wednesday morning
was damp first thing.
The October walk at
Thropton had been
cancelled due to the
rain, and some of us
wondered how wet we
would get. So much
for our faith in the
weather! It stayed dry,
and though the views were not as stunning as they might have been, they
were still very beautiful especially with the wonderful Autumn colours of the
beech trees and bracken.
The ground underfoot was quite damp, and with a cold wind, Susan wisely
decided we would not go up to the top, but walk inside the walled
Chillingham park, where there is a well marked footpath. Despite some very
wet parts, we all enjoyed the walk, and several views of the white cattle.
Lunch was at the Tankerville in Eglingham, where most of us had good
wholesome soup. We then returned home, knowing that we all had plans to
return and explore Ros Castle in better weather.
We've Been To London But Not Seen The
Queen
The first weekend of November saw 18 of St James's Guides and 3 leaders
catching the 7.25 a.m. train to London for an action packed 24 hours!
First stop was Downing Street and standing on the steps of Number 10, It
was a very special experience for all of us, and even more so for the 2
Guides who made their Promise there. Next to the Cenotaph and then The
Guide Association Headquarters in Buckingham Palace Road. It was good
to leave our bags there before going on to see Buckingham Palace. Next we
went by boat down the Thames to Greenwich and enjoyed the Visitor
Centre before visiting the amazing floodlit O2 Arena.
Getting 21 people on and off buses can be quite a challenge, especially as
they were very full with everyone heading to Blackheath Common for the
fireworks! We sat outside a Pizza Express and enjoyed our pizzas, mostly
followed by pink candyfloss, before joining the crowds to oooh and aaah at
the exploding fireworks in the sky. Amazingly we managed to stay together
despite the thousands of people heading for the station and returning to
London. By 10.30 we were all in our sleeping bags after a full and exciting
day. Sunday we had some 'essential' retail therapy in the souvenir shops
before returning to King's Cross and home to Alnmouth.
It really was a fantastic 24 hours of fun and new experiences.
We raised a wonderful total of £201.12 in
just over one hour for Children in Need on
14 th November. A fantastic achievement
and all thanks to Daisy! It was her idea to
have a coffee evening with a cake stall and
other Pudsey activities, and so we did.

Lots of parents and friends came along from our Brownies and also from 1 st
Alnwick. Apart from the cake stall and raffle, there were lots of activities to
do which kept everyone very happy. So a big thank you to everyone who
helped us.
A Time for Celebration
Northern Synod's Listed Building Advisory Committee (LBAC) has
issued a leaflet reminding our churches of the coming 350th anniversary of
what is known as The Great Ejectment. This marks the beginnings of
non-conformist congregations in England - and at least two of our synod's
churches (Great Bavington and Horsley) have seen their own stories as
beginning at this time.

The LBAC leaflet begins
In 1662, Parliament passed a law called the Act of Uniformity, which obliged
all worship to conform to that practised by the Church of England.
Catholics, Puritans, Quakers, Baptists, Presbyterians, Congregationalists,
and members of any independent group of Christians had to change their
forms of worship or face prosecution, imprisonment, fines, even execution.
They also lost many civil rights, such as the opportunity to practice certain
professions or go to University (at that time, just Oxford and Cambridge).
They could not build churches. Priests and Pastors could not wear clerical
dress. Communion vessels had to be hidden. They had to worship and
meet in secret. Some of these faithful congregations are the ancestors of the
present-day United Reformed Church.
The Committee reminds us that
As part of Vision 20:20, we are being asked to rediscover our identity as a
Church. This means the distinctive character of our national Church, but
also the history of our individual congregations. Once we know where we
have come from, we will have a better idea of who we are, what we are
doing, why we do it, and where we are going.
They go on to encourage us to find out more about our own local church
histories, to be proud of our Church, and to share our Church.
A number of events are being held to mark the anniversary (see links below)
including a service at Westminster Abbey on February 7 th . Arising out of
the joint report ‘Healing of Memories’ which has been to the Church of
England's General Synod and our own Mission Council, this is planned as a
service of Reconciliation, Healing of Memories and Mutual Commitment.
There will testimonies about martyrs of the past and stories of shared work in
the present, leading to an act of commitment for the future.
2012 also sees the 40th anniversary of the United Reformed Church, which
will be celebrated at our autumn synod meeting at Trinity, Gosforth on
October 20th. (From the Northern Synod web site)
Christian Aid This Christmas
The people of the Democratic Republic of
Congo (DRC) have had a lot to fear. Despite
huge deposits of minerals (such as diamonds)
and an abundance of natural resources (such
as timber), 80 per cent of the population live
on less than 13 pence/14 euro cents per day.
Fragile leadership and escalating conflict over
recent years have resulted in large-scale
civilian massacres, widespread rape and
sexual violence, and many thousands of
people forced to abandon their villages.
And yet, while the DRC has sometimes been publicised in our media as a
place of nothing but despair, Christian Aid partners are telling stories that
speak of deep joy and profound hope, even within this challenging context
of poverty and violence.
Shukuru, far left, is now re united with her fam ily
Seeking shelter
Shukuru Binguru was only
12 years old when she heard
rebel soldiers approaching
her school: 'I heard
explosions and shouting. I
said to the others "can't you
hear that? We must leave
and go and find our
families".'
She ran home to find her
three younger siblings
distressed and alone. Their
father was out working in the
fields and their mother was
away at market. Shukuru
and her siblings joined the
crowds of people leaving for
Goma. In an unknown city,

with no idea whether their parents were alive or dead, they had a lot to fear.
Then Shukuru heard of Pastor Patrick who works with Christian Aid partner
CBCA. She went to his home with her siblings to seek shelter. And they were
not alone. Over the next few days more and more children started to arrive.
Some were alone, some were in small groups. But all of them told the same
story of being forced to flee from violence. Within just a few days the
number of children had totalled 129.
'The joy was enormous'
CBCA built a centre to house the children and contacted local schools so the
older children could continue their education. And as soon as it was safe to
do so, CBCA sent out messages to its network of churches to try and get
news of the children's families. Broadcasting on the radio and reading out
lists of names in churches, it fastidiously combed the region for the families.
And amazingly, word started coming back to the CBCA centre that parents
had been found. Within six months, the sight of large groups of excited
children, dressed in their best clothes, piling into minibuses outside the
CBCA centre became a regular occurrence. They were taken back to their
villages and to emotional reunions with their parents. 'We were full of an
indescribable joy,' says Nyampuga Siperant, Shukuru's mother. 'We wept
together for 20 or 30 minutes and we shared embraces all round.'
Soon only two children remained at the centre. Two months later, they too
had been returned to family members. The plans for an orphanage were
abandoned. Désiré Safari, the head of CBCA, tells us how the outcome
exceeded all their expectations: 'We had expected that some of the families
would not be found.' But every single child was reunited. 'The joy was
enormous.'
Good news of great joy
In this situation of dislocation, pain and fear, we witness good news of great
joy. So this Christmas, please consider a gift to Christian Aid to bring joy to
families like Shukuru's. You will be helping to bring hope in some of the
most desperate circumstances, and restoration and reconnection where there
is brokenness and pain. But it is in stories like Shukuru's that you may also
be able to witness some of the ancient truth of the promise of joy that comes
to the world at Christmas.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters WERS has been
families every year during Festive Week. This year we are
once again collecting sweets and chocolate (no nuts,
We would be very grateful if
donations could be brought to Church by 4 th December.
Clothing store — stock running low!
Evelyn, our Clothing Store Supervisor, has asked to include a plea for
donations for the store. The store has been very busy and the stock is getting
turning chilly!

West End Community Library
Thank you all so much for the wonderful response to the request for
bookcases for the new library. The library will be open to everyone in the
community and will provide a nice space to read, learn, listen to poetry and
tell stories.
WERS is working with Borderline Books based on the Team Valley and the
first batch of books was collected a couple of weeks ago. We are particularly
interested in fiction and nonfiction books in languages other than English. If
anyone has any such books we'd love to hear from you.
A message from Dorothy Craw....
Lindsay Cross
Last year (2010/11) Recyke y'Bike provided 75 asylum seekers and
refugees with free bikes, helmets, locks and the offer of Cycle Training. This
has been subsidised with funding from the Your Homes Newcastle Asylum
Seeker Unit Grant Aid and more recently the Hilden Trust.
The funding (for 30 bikes) has nearly been used up as we have, this year,
provided 26 more. There is such a demand that we still have 16 clients on
the waiting list. At this time of year it's a bit of a problem as there is a huge
demand for cheap bikes from students and the 4 P/T mechanics really need
to work on the 20+ bikes that we need to sell a week to break even.
Our problem is lack of bikes. If you have one or know of anyone who has a
bike, never mind the condition or age, don't let it go to the tip - bring it to
A Letter from the People’ Kitchen
I am writing to thank you for your generous Harvest gifts to The People's
Kitchen on behalf of St James Church. We have been experiencing an
increase of about one third in the numbers of homeless and disadvantaged

people coming to us for help and your gifts will help to ensure that we will be
able to continue to provide regular nourishing meals for them. A receipt is
enclosed for the cash donation.
Our stocks of food were running low over the summer period, but thanks to
various organizations including yours, our store rooms are starting to fill up
again.
On behalf of everyone at The People's Kitchen, thank you again for your
support. Long may it continue. We are particularly grateful to those who
helped to organize, pack and deliver the Harvest goods to our Centre.
Rob ert Eldridge, Trustee Chair man
We add our thanks for your continued generosity; when we took the
donated goods to the People’s Kitchen there were many people waiting
outside for the midday meal.
