Yankee Homecoming Honors Those Who Serve
Continued from page 1
be honored from 4 to 6 p.m. on
Wednesday, Aug. 1 during the
Generations of Giving event at
the Senior Community Center.
Honored this year are Quinn
Campbell and Annaliese Keller.
Campbell is a member of the
Best Buddies at Newburyport
High School for four years,
helping plan field trips and
events for students with special
needs. She also has been a prom
date for special needs students
and has volunteered at several
organizations. She works at the
Newburyport Youth Services.
“Kids love her and parents
appreciate her commitment to
their children,” said Margot
Petler, NYS assistant director who
nominated Quinn. “I can’t wait
to see what Quinn does with the
rest of her life … nothing short of
amazing I’m sure.”
Keller has been a mentor at
the Newburyport Learning
Enrichment Center since 2015
where she offers academic, social
and emotional support for at-risk
children. She is the founder of the
Storey Avenue:
A Village Center or Retail Strip Mall?
Continued from page 1
To enforce this concept, the
city battled over the design of
the new CVS building, insisting
that it be sited next to the street,
although the front door faces
onto a parking lot.
For the Kaplan site, the last
large vacant parcel on Storey
Avenue, Port found that the
“site configuration (building
and parking locations) is so
automobile-centric as to create an
awkward and unsafe ‘strip mall’
site layout in which the parking
areas and drive isles completely
surround the building at the
center of the property, thereby
placing pedestrians and vehicular
traffic in direct conflict across the
entire site,” a pleading before the
Land Court states.
The battle between the two
different views of what Storey
Avenue should look like was
escalated to the state Land Court,
where the Kaplans argued that
their plan was more in keeping
with property that fronted on a
state highway, Rte. 113.
The city and the Zoning
Board of Appeals argued that
the Kaplans had waived or
abandoned the earlier approved
plans. The Kaplans disagreed,
maintaining that it was asking the
city planning board to approve
only minor modifications.
The landowners won the case,
high school’s Girls Forward Club,
which supports the Jeanne Geiger
Crisis Center Walk Against
Domestic Violence.
“Annaliese leads by example
how to stand tall, strong and
proud and has helped our students
build confidence in their ability
to control their own future,”
said Nancy Earls, director of the
enrichment center.
Frank Ventura started the
veterans’ lunch 10 years ago.
Shortly before his death he turned
the event management over to
Jarvis. Dan Ventura, Frank’s
son and manager of Fairway
Mortgage, continues to be a lead
sponsor of the event.
The master of ceremonies will
be retired Brig. Gen. Paul Smith,
who served as the assistant adjutant
general and land component
commander of the Massachusetts
National Guard from 2012 to
2014. During his 35 year career,
he commanded Joint Task Force
Massachusetts during numerous
emergencies including the
Western Massachusetts Tornado,
Hurricane Irene, Hurricane
and a new building permit was
issued for the building with a
parking lot in front of it.
Port described the planning
process in cities in “lengthy.” To
achieve the city’s goal of creating
a village center at its western
gateway may take decades now
that the last vacant piece of
property on Storey Avenue is
being developed with a different
concept.
The construction schedule calls
for the Storey Avenue Marketplace
Shops to be completed by next
spring.
The one announced tenant is
ConvenientMD, which operates
walk-in emergency medical
treatment in New Hampshire
and Maine. The clinic on Storey
Avenue will be one of its first in
Massachusetts.
