Region 16 Play Off gold for North Ryde bowls trio NORTH Ryde RSL lady lawn bowlers have done their club proud after tasting succcss at the recent Region 16 play offs. Stalwarts Pat Saunders, Slavica Beram and Ivy Hitchens produced superb efforts at elite representative level. Pat and Slavica (pictured below with their gold medals) won the Open Pairs Region 16 play offs with a 19-16 victory over a tough team from The Hills and advance to the State Play offs at Taren Point on September 5-6. Two days later the talented Ivy Hitchens (below right) produced an outstanding game against C Cadman from The Hills to win 25/21 in the Region Singles Play offs. She will now compete in the State Play offs atTaren Point on September 3-4. The accomplished North Ryde trio received their gold medals from Mitchell District President Toni Pollock and Macquarie District Secretary Fay Laney. The top of the table clash last Wednesday night saw the Hawks Open team welcome back GIANTS shooter Kiera Austin (pictured) and three of their NSW Australian Netball League (ANL) players following the end of that competition including Sophie Halpin who recently played for the Swifts. ERNA came out firing from the first whistle and were fiercely competitive against the previously undefeated Central Coast Heart side. The ball movement from both teams was slick up and down the court and at the end of the first quarter the Hawks were down by a goal. At the break the Hawks made one change bringing on NSW Swifts training partner Alison Miller into the goal shooter position. Alison’s combination with Austin was impressive to watch, their movement around the goal circle allowed them to evade the feisty Central Coast defenders continuously. There was excellent precision passing into the goal shooters from Ebony Burnard and Georgia Marshall, allowing the shooters to be in the perfect position to score the goals. The third quarter saw the Hawks go from strength to strength with the defenders Jessica Grant – who is having the best season she can remember – turnover so much ball that the Hawks won the quarter by ten goals taking a 48-35 lead. The spectators where applauding the skills and athleticism from both teams, which was enthralling to watch. Guest speaker at the Wolves’ annual Social event is former Balmain international fullback and Burwood United ‘favourite son’ Tim Brasher (pictured). BY CHRIS KARAS Come along and celebrate over 100 years of rugby league with Burwood United, Concord United and Concord Burwood Wolves All past and present players, coaches, officials, families and associates of these three great clubs are invited to the Reunion in League which doubles as the launch of the Wolves’ history book A Union in League compiled by club historian Paul de La Motte. Brasher skippered Burwood United to a swag of junior premierships before bursting into the Balmain first grade team as a 17 year old centre prodigy in 1989. The Burwood cub featured in the Tigers’ epic Grand Final against Canberra and went on to play 185 matches for the Tigers before stints with South Sydney (40 matches) and North Queensland (16 games). Brasher made 21 Origin appearances for NSW and 16 Tests for Australia including the Kangaroos’ World Cupwinning 1992 and 1995 outfits and 1994 tour of England and France. During his illustrious career, Brasher scored 112 tries and booted 116 goals for a tally of 680 points. Tennis ace Rinky,17 reaches Junior Wimbledon finals EPPING tennis whiz Rinky Hijikata has achieved spectacular results in his debut campaign at Wimbledon. The 17 year old Australian Junior Davis Cup star teamed with Japan’s Naoki Tajima to reach the semi finals of the Wimbledon Honours for North Ryde cricket great Eddie Kennedy LEGENDARY North Ryde RSL cricketer Eddie Kennedy received the surprise of his life when he recently attended the Club’s annual Presentation Night. A proud Eddie, North Ryde’s original club captain, was chuffed when honoured twice by officials for his outstanding contributions to his beloved Cricket Club both on and off the field. The fast bowling great presented a new perpetual trophy - the Eddie Kennedy Bowling Award named in his honour - to Dan Buttrey on the night but the best was yet to come. Life member Eddie was shocked soon after when he received two plaques - one to take home - revealing that the southern end of the North Ryde RSL Oval cricket pitch will be hereby known as The Boys doubles event. Hijikata and Tajima were beaten 6-3 7-6(4) by sixth seeds Nicolas Mejia and Ondrej Styler but showed they have the talent and court skills to go a long way. Earlier they posted a stunning victory over top seeds Ray Ho Kennedy End in recognition of the sterling service from the widely respected Kennedy family including Eddie and sons and his stalwart father Ned. The other plaque will be mounted into the cricket pitch. Earlier Eddie presented the All Rounder of the Year award to Ben Whitbred, who he had sent down from Forster to play with the club. Despite the loss, this is the deepest Hijikata has gone at a junior Grand Slam event after reaching the quarterfinals in singles at the 2018 Australian Junior Open and the French Juniors at Roland Garros. Tajima linked with Rinky in June after winning the French Junior Open doubles and the pair reached Whiteman(2000) and John Bosward (2009). Club stalwart Richard Ellis scooped the awards - not only performing as an individual but captained his fourth grade side to a premiership in which nine of his players won a maiden title. All rounder Ellis claimed the Batting Award (410 runs @ 51.25); Highest score: 135 v Rydalmere; Most Valuable Player Award and Bowling Award (27 wickets @ 13.11) and collected Perpetual Awards for Tommy Hamilton Batsman of the Year and David Smith Most Valuable Player. Other Perpetual awards were: Eddie Kennedy Bowling Award: Dan Buttrey (34 wickets @ 13.06); All-rounder of the Year: Benjamin Whitbred (23 wickets @ 16 plus 314 runs @ 39.25); Bernie Turner Achievement the final at the Astrid Bowl in Belgium.
