John Lane Days celebrates history, farming innovation
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
Having just celebrated its
third year, Historic John Lane
Days is becoming one of the
most anticipated local events
of the summer, as it combines
history and family fun while
raising money to preserve a
Lockport landmark.
Over this past weekend of
Saturday, July 14, and Sunday,
July 15, Historic John
Lane Farm — located at
16217 S. Gougar Road —
invited friends, neighbors
and history buffs to celebrate
John Lane’s game-changing
invention of the steel plow
in 1833, while taking in the
atmosphere of the working,
pesticide-free farm during
Historic John Lane Days
2018. Shopping was available
at more than 20 vendor
booths and tickets were
sold for special attractions,
including a children’s train
ride, pedal cars and other activities,
many of which were
new to the event this year.
Abraham Lincoln — portrayed
by Kevin Wood —
shared insight into the history
of Illinois, Brittany Svee offered
family photos on the
picturesque grounds, Big R
shared advice for the modern
farmer at its booth and many
more individuals and businesses
added to the fun.
John Lane Days also hosted
a ticketed concert on the
evening of July 14 featuring
up-and-coming Americana
artist Elliot Sedgwick. Proceeds
raised from the concert,
along with all the money
raised during the daytime
activities, are to go toward
repairing and restoring a barn
that farm owner and John
Lane Board of Trustees President
Sylvia Zielke-Kuffel intends
to convert into an educational
community center.
“Our whole goal is to preserve
the history of this location,
and John Lane, who
invented the very first steel
plow,” she said. “We’re a little
postage stamp in the middle
of a crazy world. What
we want to do is bring reality
Proceeds collected from the Historic John Lane Days,
which included a fundraising concert for the first time in
2018, will support renovating the barn on the property and
transforming it into an educational center for the community.
Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media
back to ground zero. This is
how you grow crops. This is
how you survive, and, if you
learn it, you’re going to live
healthy for a long time, and
you’ll feel good.”
Lockport resident Michelle
Svee fell in love with the
farm when she participated
in John Lane Days as a vendor
in 2017. Now, she is the
secretary on the farm’s board
and a driving force behind
making Historic John Lane
Days bigger and better.
“At my first John Lane
Days last year, there was just
something about Sylvia and
her passion for this,” Michelle
said of her motivation
to get involved. “It’s a piece
of local history, and it’s going
to get lost if people don’t
come out and help us.”
Michelle also recruited her
mother, Sharon, to join the
board and help out with this
year’s Historic John Lane
Days.
“We have more of a variety
this year, and a lot more for
people to come out and enjoy,”
Sharon said. “The concert
at 5 p.m. tonight is going
to be fantastic, too.”
Montessori School of
Lemont, which teaches students
about farming at John
Lane Farm, had a booth in
the vendor area featuring
items made by students, with
a percentage of the proceeds
benefiting the farm’s barn
restoration project.
Teacher Rebecca McClenning
said her students love
participating in the entire
process of farming, from
planting to food to table.
“They enjoy learning about
the land and how to produce
products for themselves,” she
said.
John Lane was at the heart
of every aspect of the event,
as was the importance of his
revolutionary invention: the
steel plow. One of his descendants,
Lockport resident
Floss Smith, was “very happy”
to see him honored and
enjoyed the new additions to
the festival fun.
“I hope they can get the
money to restore the barn,”
Smith said. “... There’s lots
of stuff for people of all ages,
and, of course, the organic
vegetables and everything
are great.”
Zielke-Kuffel also enjoyed
seeing the smiles on the faces
of attendees as they supported
her vision to transform the
historic barn into a community
center honoring the history
of local farming and John
Lane’s important invention.
“I’m thrilled that we have
all this going on. It’s amazing,”
she said.
The produce and gift shop
at John Lane Farm is open 10
a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday to
Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
on Saturdays through October.
Lockport Citizens Police Academy
promotes partnership with residents
Jacquelyn Schlabach
Assistant Editor
The Lockport Police Department
is currently accepting
applications for its annual
Citizens Police Academy,
which starts this September
and looks to continue building
partnerships with community
members.
The academy is open to
anyone age 18 and older
who either lives, works or
goes to school in Lockport.
Participants are to meet at
the Lockport Police Department
located at 1212 S. Farrell
Road from 6-9 p.m. every
Monday starting Sept. 10
for 12 weeks.
“Chief Terry Lemming is
extremely big on community
policing, and these days obviously,
with what’s going on
in the media and how things
are played out, the police are
kind of getting a bad rap these
days, and we really want to
focus our police department
more on the community and
partnering with the community
in order to decrease
crime and prevent crime
and things of that nature,”
program coordinator officer
Jeren Szmergalski said.
There are already nine
spots filled of the 16 allotted
for the program. Participants
are to not only get a chance
to learn about the various
aspects of the police department
through this interactive
program, but they are to also
learn a lot about the people
behind the badges.
“So this course gives the
opportunity to the citizens
of Lockport to kind of come
into our world, I guess you
could say, and get to know us
not as the officers but as the
people who do the job and
protect them,” Szmergalski
said. “And it gives them a
little sense of what we go
through as regular people
in this profession, how it affects
us, how it affects our
families, [and] what mindset
we’re in when we’re out doing
our various jobs.”
Szmergalski said having
a relationship with those
in Lockport helps the officers
do their job effectively
by putting everyone on the
same team. The citizens of
Lockport are the eyes and
ears of the police department,
preventing crime and
helping the officers solves
cases faster, she said.
Throughout the 12 weeks,
a speaker from WesCom
Emergency Dispatch is to
come in to talk about what
they do on a daily basis. Different
LPD officers are to
come in as well to share information
about the Illinois
criminal code and domestic
violence laws, which Szmergalski
is to lead. The LPD
K-9 officer and officers who
have been undercover drugbuying
agents are also to
come speak about their jobs.
There is also to be a use of
force lesson, where participants
will be put through a
shoot-don’t-shoot training
that officers go through using
devices similar to paintball
guns. Last year, assistant
one of the courses about the
court system and took the
participants through a trial.
Szmergalski hopes to have
them return again this year.
The Citizens Police Academy
is offered at no cost to
Sponsored by Marquette Bank
Joseph Marino,
Taft School rising
fourth-grader
Joseph Marino was chosen
as Standout Student for his
academic excellence.
What is one essential you
must have when studying?
I like music on when I am
studying like David Bowie,
Michael Jackson and Rick
Astley.
What do you like to do when
not at school or studying?
I like drawing, playing
outside and video games.
What is your dream job?
I would like to be a
gym teacher, because I
like playing sports and
working out.
What are some most played
songs on your iPod?
1980s music like “Bad”
by Michael Jackson.
What is one thing people
don’t know about you?
I like to draw every day.
My favorite things to draw
are super hero characters.
Whom do you look up to?
My dad, because he is
working really hard to build
us a new house.
What do you keep under
your bed?
I keep a tackle box filled
with my drawings, an autographed
photo of Adam
Sandler, arrowheads and
shark teeth.
Who is your favorite teacher
and why?
My favorite teacher is
Mrs. Ellison because she is
awesome. She let me perform
a science experiment
called “Elephant Toothpaste”
in front of the whole
class, and I even got to pick
my assistant, Mariana.
What’s your favorite class
and why?
My favorite class is music
with Mr. Gort. We get to
play a lot of different songs
on our recorders. My favorite
song to play is “Old Mac-
Donald Had a Farm.”
What’s one thing that stands
out about your school?
The one thing that stands out
about my school is my mom,
dad, grandma and grandpa all
went to Taft school.
What extracurricular do you
wish your school had?
I wish we had class pets
at our school. I love to learn
about and hold animals.
What’s your morning
routine?
Photo submitted
I wake up at 7:15 a.m.
First, I eat breakfast. Then,
I get dressed. Last, I brush
my teeth. I also have to take
my dog Klare out to use the
bathroom.
If you could change one thing
about school, what would
it be?
I would like more free
time, so I can draw and play
with my friends.
What’s your favorite thing
to eat in the cafeteria?
I always bring my lunch to
school, but my favorite food
for lunch is a homemade
ham sandwich. I make my
own sandwich for lunch every
night before I go to bed.
I also like to make my Dad’s
sandwich and write him
notes to put in his lunch box.
What’s your best memory
from school?
My friends and I playing
four square.
FROM THE MOKENA MESSENGER
Resale shop opens in
Mokena to benefit local
animal shelter
In addition to adopting,
volunteering or donating, locals
can add shopping to the
list of things they can do to
help out NAWS animal rescue
in Mokena.
Resale for Rescues opened
July 2 on Front Street, and
the shelves are brimming
with secondhand items
awaiting a second chance.
The idea of saving things
that someone else did not
want and finding them a new
home parallels the mission
of NAWS to find homes for
abandoned or stray animals.
Proceeds from the shop,
after paying for rent and utilities,
go directly to NAWS
to support its financial needs
and those of the animals it
brings in.
Many times, the animals
NAWS brings in are in need
of medical attention, in addition
to the food, supplies and
regular veterinary care the
animals also will need.
The store takes donations
and sells items such as furniture,
clothing, home goods,
shoes, purses and jewelry.
Owner Connie George
said the resale shop has been
a dream of hers for years, but
after her 50th birthday she
decided to drop everything
and do it for the animals.
“When we started this, I
was volunteering at NAWS,”
George said. “And this was
like my dream ... to have a
resale shop that the profits
would go to for the animals
because they are so unheard.
They have no voice.”
FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT
Historical society replaces
stained glass windows in
119-year-old church
It has been an expensive
year for the New Lenox Area
Historical Society.
It started with purchasing
the 116-year-old railroad
depot last winter, and
the resources spent to save
the structure from being demolished.
Then, there was
also the acquisition of the
119-year-old former Methodist
church after that.
“We depleted our budget
this year, but this is all important
to us,” said Dianne
Ross, a member of the historical
society.
In addition to purchasing
the church, located at 112
Church St., the restoration
efforts are another expense.
Last month, the historical
society repurposed three
large stained-glass windows
that were long overdue for
being re-leaded. The windows
have not been re-leaded
since the church was built
in 1899. Ross said leading
lasts 70-80 years.
“The gentlemen who owns
the stained glass studio took
one of the really bad ones
out said, ‘I’ve never seen
one this bad,’” Ross said.
Restoring the three windows
cost $43,000, Ross
said. The problem is there
are still roughly a dozen
windows that need to be addressed.
“It’s a very expensive
project, so we have to do it
as we have the money,” Ross
said. “We did the first three
that were critical. They had
to be done because, otherwise,
we would have lost
them, for sure.”
FROM THE FRANKFORT STATION
LW East, West end summer
baseball season amid umpire
situation
Things do not always go
according to plan.
They did not for the Lincoln-Way
East baseball team
in the summer state tournament
this week.
East coach Eric Brauer
planned to coach in the second
game of the opening
day of the regional portion
of the Illinois High School
Baseball Coaches Association
Summer Baseball Tournament
on July 9. Instead,
Brauer was pressed into duty
as an umpire for an inning in
a game between Lemont and
Lincoln-Way West.
“That wasn’t in the game
plan,” Brauer said.
But it is what he did as
the coach of the host school.
Brauer was pressed into duty
because the home plate umpire
collapsed with one out in
the top of the second inning.
While the ump reportedly
never lost consciousness, he
was taken by ambulance to a
local hospital.
After at least a 30-minute
delay, Brauer had to fill
in for the umpire but called
balls and strikes from behind
the pitcher. That lasted for
an inning, while a base umpire
changed into his gear to
umpire behind the plate. An
accredited umpire was at the
game to watch his brother
play for LW West but instead
served as an umpire for the
rest of the game on the bases.
The good news was that
the original home plate umpire
was released later that
evening and was back out as
an umpire the next morning;
however, neither Lincoln-
Way team made it to the next
day.
Tinley Park veteran relishes
Honor Flight trip
Tinley Park’s Jack “Whitey”
Hoffmeister was among
roughly 100 veterans greeted
with a hero’s welcome
at Chicago’s International
Midway Airport.
Hoffmeister returned from
Washington, D.C., July 11 to
a group of family members
and well-wishers, including
Gov. Bruce Rauner, who
thanked the Honor Flight
Chicago veterans returning
from their day trip. Founded
in 2008, the nonprofit
provides veterans and one
family member with an allexpenses-paid
day of tribute
that features stops at war
of appreciation.
Growing up in a Rogers
started his career in the United
States Navy back in the
early 1950s, serving in Korea
from 1952-1953 before
ending his military service
in the U.S. Marine Corps as
a combat corpsman.
“It’s an honor, quite an
honor,” the 86-year-old
Korean War veteran said.
“But it’s really for all the
guys who didn’t come back
home.”
Those in Tinley Park probably
know Whitey from The
Dairy Palace, a homemade
with the help of some
of his 10 grandchildren. He
also used to own and operate
Whitey’s Italian Beef and
Kara Keating
Editorial Intern
After spending
a month of my
summer studying
in Europe traveling to
Paris, London, and Rome
and exploring new things
while living off pizza and
pasta, I now find myself
at The Lockport Legend as
the new editorial intern to
keep my adventurous summer
alive.
My name is Kara
Keating and I am
heading into my junior
year at Michigan State
University where I major
in journalism with a focus
in sports. When I’m away
at school, I write for the
campus newspaper The
State News as one of five
sports reporters covering
various sports including
football, hockey and
volleyball while even
diving into a few news
stories covering ex-MSU
and USA Gymnastics
doctor Larry Nassar.
I grew up on the south
side of Chicago in the little
neighborhood known as
Mount Greenwood all of
my life, where I attended
Marist High School and
competed in the IHSA
Journalism State Final.
Yes, there is such a thing
and I never knew what it
was until my junior year.
Did I grow up knowing I
would be a journalist? No.
But I also never thought
I would bleed green and
white either, and now both
are what I love most.
I have been obsessed
with sports since I was 5
years old, watching my
two favorite sports teams:
the Chicago White Sox
and the Detroit Red Wings.
I don’t have any family
members from Michigan,
but I can thank my dad
for starting my passion
for the Red Wings and the
sport of hockey itself. I
love hockey so much that
I hope after my college
career is over that I will
continue to cover hockey
on the professional level,
whether it be for the Red
Wings or any of the other
30 NHL teams.
Journalism consumes my
life, which there is nothing
wrong with, but when I am
not out and about reporting
I tend to spend my hard
earned money and time
on concerts. Some think
I’m insane for driving or
even sometimes flying to
go see some of my favorite
bands or artist perform, but
I get the same adrenaline
rush from concerts as I do
while writing on deadline,
so they balance each other
out.
Before I head back
to East Lansing for the
fall, I hope to explore
the community and find
creative people and
businesses who make
this town unique and
even venture out of my
comfort zone of sports
reporting. This job allows
me to meet new people,
see new places, and go
out of my bubble of my
neighborhood. Even
Don’t let your
advertising cool
down this summer.
BE SMART. ADVERTISE IN
Schenk raises money for Special Olympics ahead of race
Mary Compton
Freelance Reporter
Legend has it, the best
stock cars are made in the
junkyard.
Lockport police officer
Debbie Schenk took the advice
of Ron Johnston from
Camp Depression to help
her create her vehicle for
the Saturday, July 21, Five-
0 at the Dirty O at Route 66
Raceway.
The police car race benefits
the athletes of Special
Olympics. Each race
team was required to raise
a minimum $500 donation
to compete, but Schenk
has already blown past
that total.
“I’m at $2,000 for Special
Olympics, [and] my
goal is $5,000,” Schenk
said. “[Anyone] can make
a donation at www.soill.org
and search the Five-0 at the
Dirty O and then search Officer
Debbie Schenk.
“I love the paint job. It
went from being a red car to
black and white. Last year,
my car was purple; it was
thrown together. It’s nice
to have a black and white
[car] this year. My number
will be on the car — number
45 in purple — which is my
badge number.”
Last year, the event was
sold out, and those interested
in attending this year
can purchase tickets online
at www.dirtoval66.com.
Twenty-five-year Lockport
resident Bert Thompson
works at O’Hare Towing,
and he donated a
vehicle for Schenk.
“I’ve been involved in
Special Olympics for a
few years now with Torch
Run and the Five-0 at the
Dirty O; it’s a good cause,”
Thompson said. “This year,
we gave her a better car, we
want her to finish in the Top
five. I helped Debbie strip
the car and interior. State
Street [Auto Body] stepped
up and volunteered to paint
the car, which is a huge undertaking.
This car will also
bring awareness to what the
Lockport Police Department
does as well as Debbie
herself.”
Jim Pelc, owner of State
Street Auto Body for 31
years, did some body work
and painted the Grand Marquis
for Schenk.
“They brought the car in,
it was a piece of junk,” Pelc
said. “We donated our time
and materials to paint the
car black and white like the
Lockport squad car because
the driver is a police officer.
I sanded it down and we
did some body work. The
prep time for the car before
painting was two weeks.
The paint always covers
the sins of the car. The
more you put on the better it
looks. We’re happy to do it
for them and Special Olympics
of Illinois.”
Ron Johnston, a Lockport
resident since 2009, owns
the race team Full Throttle.
He is a union carpenter full
time and does racing as a
hobby.
“I’ve been around this
sport my whole life,” Johnston
said. “We raced 12 cars
last year; the first night we
wrecked 12. We bought 40
cars this year. Last year was
Debbie’s first year. There
was supposed to be another
officer racing and he chickened
out and officer Debbie
stepped up. She didn’t want
to race at first, but she did
it. She had some guts to go
out there and race with a
bunch of guys. This year,
we made sure everything
was good mechanically for
her car.
“If you want to win, you
have to win in the garage
first.”
Lockport officer Debbie Schenk checks over her stock car at Camp Depression, which she will be driving Saturday, July
21, Five-0 at the Dirty O Tournament of Destruction at the Dirt Oval at Route 66 Raceway.
foods for which the city and
surrounding suburbs were
most famous, pizza would
surely have to be at the top
of that list.
In the south and southwest
suburbs, one small chain has
been building its reputation
for gourmet pizza and distinctive
dining atmosphere
over more than 40 years:
Chicago Dough Co.
The original Chicago
Dough opened in Richton
Park in 1975 under the chain
Pizza Inn. But, after some
disagreements among the
original pair of owners, they
decided to split. And Chicago
Dough was born in 1976,
according to New Lenox location
owner Tim Waters.
The move to focus on
a better quality pizza has
paid off, as Chicago Dough
has become a staple in the
Chicago area, perhaps best
known for its daily lunch
buffets from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.,
Monday-Friday, and 11:30
a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturdays
and Sundays (adults $8.99,
children 12 and younger
$4.49). The buffet features
unlimited trips to the salad
bar, which includes 27 items;
chicken wings; homemade
soup; 6-9 samples of pizza
from the menu at any given
time; as well as seasonal or
Pictured is the inside of Chicago Dough Co. in New Lenox.
trial pizzas not on the menu,
such as the pulled pork pizza
with a glazed cabbage topping,
or chili chicken and
cilantro. Of course, there is
also dessert pizza, topped
with fruit, cinnamon or peanut
butter.
And that is just for lunch.
There is also the twice-aweek
dinner buffet from
4:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays and
Wednesdays (adults $10.99,
children 12 and younger
$4.99). Evening buffets still
feature the salad bar and pizzas,
but also include Italian
beef on Mondays and chicken
wings on Wednesdays.
Waters said he prides himself
on bringing the best ingredients
to the table. The
bread and dough are made
without any bromated or
bleached flour. The restaurant
buys locally and organically
whenever possible, and
most everything edible is
prepped daily to ensure the
highest level of freshness
possible.
“I wouldn’t serve anything
I wouldn’t eat myself,”
Waters said.
But, as good as the food is
at Chicago Dough, it might
be overshadowed by the
good Waters does for New
Chicago Dough Co.
Lenox on behalf of the restaurant.
Chicago Dough, since its
opening in New Lenox in
2007, has donated free food
to countless number of fundraisers,
events, and even
people and families who
have experienced some sort
of unexpected hardship or
tragedy. Some of the recipients
of Waters’ philanthropy
include St. Jude Catholic
Church, New Lenox
baseball and football, area
schools, and the New Lenox
Fire Protection District.
“If there’s somebody in
this town who has a real
need, we’ll step up and try
to do something for them,”
Waters said. “If you have a
Chicago Dough New Lenox owner Tim Waters (left) and chef Ernesto Lopez prepare a pizza
for the daily lunch buffet. Photos by T.J. Kremer III/22nd Century Media
Chicago Dough’s salad bar features 27 items and is included in both lunch and dinner buffets,
or can be added to any meal for $4.99.
real need, and you’re getting
the short end of the stick, so
to speak, and if a pizza will
help you out, then I’m more
than happy to give you a
pizza.
“I’m just interested in
helping people.”
And at the end of the day,
that sense of civic responsibility
— and the pizza —
is what separates Chicago
Dough from the rest. And
Waters said he is currently
looking for someone to help
him carry that mantle, as
he has been managing and
owning Chicago Dough locations
for 40 years. He said
he is looking for the right
person who wants to carry
on the legacy of a smalltown
pizza place known for
not only serving the best to
its customers but also serves
as a business role-model for
the community.

Distinctive Home Builders Introduces New Craftsman Homes
In Manhattan and Peotone – From the mid-$200’s
New designs are a result of buyer feedback
Two refreshing designs mark
the beginning of a new series
of Craftsman-style homes
available from Distinctive Home
Builders at its latest new home
communities: Prairie Trails;
located in Manhattan within the
highly-regarded Lincoln-Way
School District and at WestGate
Manor in Peotone within
the desirable Peotone School
District.
“Craftsman homes were
introduced in the early 1900s
in California with designs
based on a simpler, functional
aesthetic using a higher level
of craftsmanship and natural
materials. These homes were a
departure from homes that were
mass produced from that era,
“according to Bryan Nooner,
president of Distinctive Home
Builders.
“The Craftsman design has
made a comeback today for
many of the same reasons it
started over a century ago. Our
customers want to live in a home
that gets away from the “mass
produced” look and live in a
home that has more character. As
a result of our daily interaction
with our homeowners and their
input, we are excited to introduce
these two homes, with additional
designs in the works.”
Nooner, who meets with
each homeowner prior to
construction, has been working
on these plans for a while and felt
that the timing was ideal for the
debut. “Customers were asking
for something different and
simple with less monotony and
higher architectural standards.”
The result was the Craftsman
ranch and the Prairie twostory,
now available at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
The Craftsman ranch features
an open floor plan with Great
Room, three bedrooms, two
baths and a two-car (optional
three-car) garage. The Prairie
features a two-story foyer and
Great Room, three bedrooms
and one and one-half baths, a
convenient Flex Room space
on the main level and a two-car
(optional three-car) garage. The
Craftsman architectural elements
on both homes include brick and
stone exteriors with cedar shake
accent siding, low-pitched gabled
bracket roofs, front porches with
tapered columns and stone piers,
partially paned windows, and a
standard panel front entry door.
Distinctive Home Builders
offers a Craftsman-style trim
package offering trim without
ornate profiles and routers. The
trim features simplicity in design
with rectangles, straight lines and
layered look trims over doors for
example. The front entry door
will have the standard Craftsman
panel style door. Distinctive has
also created a Craftsman color
palate to assist buyers in making
coordinated choices for the
interior of their new Craftsman
home. Colors, cabinet styles and
flooring choices blend seamlessly
with the Craftsman trim package
and are available in gray tones
package and earth tones.
Distinctive offers custom maple
kitchen cabinets featuring solid
wood construction (no particle
board), have solid wood drawers
with dove tail joints, which is
very rare in the marketplace.
“When you buy a new home
from Distinctive, you truly are
receiving custom made cabinets
in every home we sell no matter
what the price range,” noted
Nooner.
Distinctive Home Builders
works to achieve a delivery goal
of 90 days with zero punch list
items for its homeowners. “Our
three decades building homes
provides an efficient construction
system,” said Nooner. “Many of
our skilled craftsmen have been
working with our company
for over 20 years. We also
take pride on having excellent
communicators throughout our
organization. This translates into
a positive buying and building
experience for our homeowners
and one of the highest referral
rates in the industry.”
Nooner added that all homes
are highly energy efficient. Every
home built will have upgraded
wall and ceiling insulation
values with energy efficient
windows and high efficiency
furnaces. Before homeowners
move into their new home,
Distinctive Home Builders
conducts a blower door test that
pressurizes the home to ensure
that each home passes a set of
very stringent Energy Efficiency
guidelines.
With the addition of these two
new designs, there are now 15
ranch, split-level and six twostory
single-family home styles to
choose from each offering from
three to eight different exterior
elevations at both communities.
The three- to four-bedroom
homes feature one and one-half
to two-and-one-half baths, twoto
three-car garages and a family
room, all in approximately 1,600
to over 3,000 square feet of living
space. Basements are included in
most models as well. Distinctive
also encourages customization
to make your new home truly
personalized to suit your lifestyle.
Oversize home sites; brick
exteriors on all four sides of the
first floor; custom maple cabinets;
ceramic tile or hardwood
floors in the kitchen, baths and
foyer; genuine wood trim and
doors and concrete driveways
can all be yours at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
Most all home sites at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor
can accommodate a three-car
garage; a very important amenity
to the Manhattan homebuyer,
said Nooner.
“When we opened Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor we
wanted to provide the best new
home value for the dollar and
we feel with offering Premium
Standard Features that we do
just that. So why wait? This is
truly the best time to build your
dream home!”
Prairie Trails is also a beautiful
place to live and raise a family
featuring a 20-acre lake on site,
as well as direct access to the 22-
mile Wauponsee Glacial Prairie
Path that borders the community
and meanders through many
neighboring communities and
links to many other popular
trails. The Manhattan Metra
station is less than a mile away.
Besides Prairie Trails,
Distinctive Home Builders
has built homes throughout
Manhattan in the Butternut
Ridge and Leighlinbridge
developments, as well as in the
Will and south Cook county
areas over the past 30 years.
Distinctive Home Builders
chose the Will County village
of Peotone for its newest
community of 38 single-family
homes at WestGate Manor
within walking distance of the
esteemed Peotone High School.
Its convenient location between
Interstate 57 and Illinois Route
50 provide easy access to I-80
nearby train stations and a
Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Alex Martinez
Alex Martinez is a rising senior at
Lockport Township High School
and a second baseman on the
baseball team.
Your summer season came to
an abrupt end in a 7-2 loss
to Stagg, but what did the
team learn from the summer
experience?
We get used to learning to
play with each other. To have the
younger and older kids to play
with each other is a good thing.
How long have you been
playing baseball?
I’ve been playing for the past
12 years. My dad [Omar] got
me started playing T-ball at First
Church of the Nazarene in Lemont
and I stuck with it.
Do you play any other
sports?
I play basketball through
the Homer Athletic Club, but
I don’t play basketball for the
school.
What is it about the game
of baseball that makes it the
sport for you?
It’s slow paced. You have to stay
focused all the time. You can’t
take a bad play with you; you have
to shake it off and keep going.
Do you have any pregame
rituals or something you
have to do before you play?
No, not really. At least nothing
special. I see some of our pitchers
do it, but not me.
Who is your favorite MLB
player?
I’m a Cubs fan, so I like all those
guys — Bryant, Rizzo, Baez. But
I enjoy watching Javy Baez the
most. What I like the best is that
he is super smooth in tagging runners
out.
The next regular season
won’t start until March, but
have you set any personal or
team goals?
Our goal as a group of seniors
is to win a state championship.
That’s been our goal since freshman
year and this will be our last
opportunity to do it.
What have you learned from
Lockport coach Andy Satunas?
Just to always be a good teammate.
To always pick up your
teammates and to just be a good
person.
Do you plan on playing baseball
in college?
Yes, I’d like to. I haven’t
committed anywhere yet. I’m
looking for a school that has a
good program for my major —
accounting and finance — and
one where I can also get playing
time.
What’s the best thing about
being an athlete at Lockport?
We get to go on a couple of
trips out of town [to Louisville,
KY in the spring and to Omaha,
NE in the summer] and face a lot
of good competition. That’s really
fun.
Baseball
Porters summer season
cut short with regional loss
Randy Whalen
Freelance Reporter
For the Lockport Township
baseball team, the
summer schedule isn’t just
about playing offseason
games - it’s a time to travel,
bond and sharpen their
skills for the next season.
The Porters traveled to
Omaha, Nebraska in mid-
June, a time that usually
corresponds with the NCAA
College Baseball World Series.
There, they played in
the Battle of Omaha, a tournament
that draws teams
from throughout the nation.
Even though the Porters
only played one game there
this summer because of rain,
they won that game and had
a fulfilling experience.
In the final week of June,
they hosted the Lockport
Porter Wood Bat Summer
Classic. Six schools participate
in the tournament,
which is held over the
course of three days. The
Porters won it this season.
When it comes playoff
time in the summer, Lockport
always hosts a regional.
The only thing was the
Porters, who lost in the regional
title game last summer,
weren’t there playing
in it last week.
They were one-and-done
after an opening round 7-2
loss to Stagg on July 9 in a
regional game as part of the
Illinois High School Baseball
Coaches Association
Summer Baseball Tournament
at Plainfield South.
Stagg immediately played
the host Cougars in a quarterfinal
game directly afterward
and lost 15-1 in five
innings.
“We like to create a map of what
everyone’s journey in our program
is going to be. That all starts in the
summer.”
Andy Satunas — Lockport baseball coach, on what
his team takes out of summer competition
“We have to tip our cap to
their pitcher — he’s a young
sophomore that had good
command of two pitches,”
Lockport coach Andy Satunas
said of George Evangelopoulos.
“We hit some
balls early, but right at
them. Our pitcher [senior
Jack Vrba] did well for the
first couple of innings, but
we were chasing them the
rest of the game.”
Stagg scored four runs in
the top of the third to take
a 4-1 lead. The Chargers
added two runs in the fourth
and one in the seventh. Senior
Danny Russo (3-for-4,
RBI) and junior Mike Orozco
(2-for-4, RBI) led the
Chargers nine-hit attack.
Lockport (6-4 final summer
record) could only
muster four hits. Senior
Collin Woulfe (2-for-3, R,
RBI, 2B, HR) had a home
run in the bottom of the
sixth. Senior Alex Martinez
(1-for-2, HBP) knocked in
the first run on a single to
left in the second inning.
Jack Mladic had the Porters
other hit with a single in the
second inning.
“One of the most important
things about winning
that first game is that we get
to see more of our players
in other games,” Satunas
said. “That was the thing
that hurts, you don’t get to
see them for another two or
three games.”
Satunas was happy to
see some of his returning
pitchers in action, including
Vrba, along with fellow
seniors John Gallet, Joe Tor
and twins John and Nolan
Weis.
“The thing I enjoyed most
is that we had some juniors
that were limited to two or
three games this past spring,
and they got to show off their
skills and skillsets,” he said.
“It was great to see some of
the sophomores, too.
“We like to create a map
of what everyone’s journey
in our program is going
to be. That all starts in the
summer.”
In the regional semifinals,
which were held the
next day, July 10, at Lockport,
Plainfield South defeated
Lemont 8-2, and
Joliet Catholic Academy
beat Plainfield Central 4-0.
Later that afternoon, Plainfield
South, which won the
IHSBCA Phil Lawler Summer
Classic State Tournament
title in 2016, defeated
JCA 2-1 to win the regional
championship and advance
back to the summer state finals
this week.

Greci gets off to fast start with Redbirds
Randy Whalen
Freelance Reporter
Jaclyn Greci’s success as a
runner can be traced all the
way back to the playground.
“When I was 7 or 8 years
old in elementary school [at
Butler in Lockport] we’d be
out at recess,” Greci said.
“We’d run around and race
and I’d beat the boys.”
Greci didn’t know it at the
time, but that was the foundation
for many things to
come for her in the running
world. While she’s no longer
racing against the boys,
the 2017 Lockport Township
High School graduate could
no doubt beat many of them.
She defeated many opponents
this spring as a freshman
sprinter on the women’s
track and field team at Illinois
State University.
“It was great,” Greci said
of being at Illinois State.
“It was honestly the best
decision I ever made to go
there. My work ethic stayed
the same, but I felt that everything
came together.
Everything from nutrition
to working out and lifting
weights.
“You don’t always realize
how much all of that is
important. You can’t expect
the results unless you put in
the work. I’ve always known
that, but it really showed this
year.”
It started right away during
the indoor season.
There, Greci finished fourth
with a personal-best time
of 56.63 seconds in the
400-meter dash to help the
Redbirds to their second
Indoor MVC Championship
in three years. Overall,
she posted a Top-five finish
in the 400-meter dash five
times over the course of the
season, including a pair of
second-place finishes at the
Illinois Orange & Blue Open
(58.48) and EIU Early Bird
(58.34).
Then, in the outdoor season,
Greci competed in the
200-meter dash, 400-meter
run and 1,600-meter relay
at the MVC Championships.
In the process, she earned
the first All-Conference accolade
of her career, running
a leg on the Redbirds’
1,600-meter relay squad that
finished third in 3:40.24.
That time ranks third alltime
in Illinois State history.
She also scored points in the
400-meter run, finishing seventh
with a time of 55.82.
Her preliminary-round
time of 55.07 at the MVC
Championships was not
only a personal-record, but
is also the 10th best time at
ISU. She finished 13th in
the 200-meter dash with a
personal-best time of 24.49,
and posted her highest finish
of the season at the Redbird
Invite — a second place one
in the 400-meter (56.53).
“When we went into the
spring season, my sprint
coach, Brenton Emanuel,
had us write down our goals
for the season,” Greci said.
“I wrote down four goals
and made them all.”
When it comes to running,
Greci has always been
a sprinter. That started as a
youth at recess, but transferred
over to her time at
Homer Jr. High, too. There,
she elected not to do cross
country, because the races
were too long. But she had
to wait until seventh grade to
run track and field there.
“When I was in seventh
grade we had a meet in
Bolingbrook,” she recalled.
“There was only one event
open for me to enter, and that
was the 100-meter dash. So
at the last minute my coach
put me in it and I went out
and won it.”
So the sprints were it from
2017 Lockport Township High School graduate Jaclyn Greci was a standout performer
for the Porters and excelled during her first year running track at Illinois State University.
Photo courtesy of Illinois State Athletics
there on for Greci. She ran
a 600-meter event once this
past season, and that’s the
longest race she’s been in.
“I like the adrenaline,” Greci
said of the sprints. “I like
that you can travel a far distance
with the team and then
in 24-55 seconds, then your
competition really isn’t that
long. There’s so much built up
and then the race is over.”
When she was at Lockport,
Greci not only established
seven school records
in the sprints and relays, she
was also on the poms/dance
team. There, she helped the
Porters make it to state in
three of her four seasons.
While they never made the
cut for the final day, it was
something that Greci, who
was at Elite Dance Academy
in Homer Glen from age
8-18, enjoyed.
But she enjoyed track and
field more, and it showed.
“I couldn’t be more proud
of her,” Lockport girls track
and field coach Joe Kravitz
said of Greci. “Her desire
and drive to be the best runner
possible is paying off
for her. She continues to get
better every season, and is
someone our current team
still looks up to. When she is
in town, she visits the girls,
goes to meets, and always
asks about how they are doing.
She represents our program
in the best way possible.
I am excited to see what
new accomplishments she
will achieve throughout the
rest of her running career.”
When she was performing
for the Porters, Greci
was a five-time IHSA Class
3A individual state qualifier
and a three-time All-Conference
and two-time All-State
performer. As a senior, she
finished fourth at the 2017
IHSA Class 3A State Championships
in the 400-meter
dash with a personal-record
time of 56.83.
That same season, Greci
— who plans to become a
high school Spanish teacher
— was on the Lockport
1,600-meter relay team
which placed fifth in the
state. Overall, she helped the
Porters go undefeated during
her senior year while being
a member of the National
Honor Society and graduating
in the Top 10 percent of
her class. She’s currently on
the dean’s list at ISU.
“Every time I was home I
tried to stop in and say hi,”
Greci said of going back to
see the current team at Lockport.
“During spring break, I
stopped in and told them of
my experiences and what to
do for college. It’s all possible
and there’s scholarships
out there for anyone. You
just have to work hard and
look for it.”

Dwyer chosen to replace Prunty as Lockport AD
Mike Dwyer is coming
home.
Pending school board approval
on Monday, July 16,
Dwyer will be the next athletic
director at Lockport
Township. For the 1993
Lockport graduate, who has
spent the past four years as
the athletic director at Andrew,
it’s a dream come true
to be in charge of the athletic
program at the high school
he attended.
“I’m home,” Dwyer said.
“I’m excited to be home.”
Dwyer certainly enjoyed
his time at Andrew, a school
he worked at for 20 years. He
was looking toward another
successful season there, but
when Jim Prunty announced
in a letter dated June 8 that
he was stepping down as
Lockport AD, things went in
motion and Dwyer jumped
at the opportunity.
“It happened pretty quickly,
and I respected the process,”
Dwyer said. “It was
a fast process and my wife
[Kim] and I discussed it. An
opportunity to be part of this
at Lockport is amazing.”
It was also a great birthday
present for Dwyer, who
turned 43 on July 7, two
days after he formally accepted
the job. After growing
up in Homer and living
in Lockport for years, Dwyer
and his family of five moved
to unincorporated Orland
Township a year ago. But
he’s now looking to move
back to Lockport. His oldest
daughter, Gianna, graduated
from Lockport in 2016.
“I believe in being part of
the community,” Dwyer said
of moving back to the Lockport
district. “I want myself
and my family to be part of
that.”
When he was at Lockport,
Dwyer played football and
ran track. He went on to play
four years of football as a
safety at North Central College.
He received a masters
degree from Governors State
University and earned another
masters degree earlier
this decade in educational
leadership from Concordia
University.
“I always saw myself being
somehow involved in
athletics,” Dwyer said. “In
college, I played football
and I always knew I wanted
to be a coach.”
He started at Andrew in
the winter of the 1997-1998
school year. He then started
coaching football in the fall
of 1998 under Mike O’Neill,
and started coaching track
and field in the spring of
1999. He became offensive
coordinator of the football
team in 2006 when Jim Zimmer
took over as head coach
and was also the head coach
of the boys track and field
team for nine years starting
in 2005.
Dwyer was also assistant
AD under Rich Piatchek for
New Lockport Township High School Athletic Director Mike
years as the AD at Andrew High School. Jeff Vorva/22nd
13 years at Andrew, before
taking over as athletic director
there in 2014.
“The hardest part of leaving
Andrew was leaving the
coaches behind after what
we’ve built there,” Dwyer
said. “We’ve built a lot of
programs there the past few
years, like football [from one
win in 2016 to six wins and a
playoff berth in 2017], boys
basketball [19 wins and a coconference
championship
this past season] and girls
soccer [a final-four Class
3A finish this spring]. Those
coaches and programs, as
well as our wrestling, cheerleading,
dance teams, and
others, will continue to do
great things. So, that’s what
I’ll miss there.”
But he knows there’s
excellent programs and
coaches at Lockport that will
continue to be built upon.
Porters principal Dennis
Hicks knows first hand what
Dwyer is capable of and is
glad to welcome him back
home to once again be a Porter.
“Knowing Mike, he’s a
character guy,” Hicks said.
“He’s supportive of everyone,
and we’re happy to
bring Mike Dwyer in as
athletic director at Lockport
Township. He’s a Lockport
guy, he’s an alum. We’re
once again looking forward
to him wearing the maroon
and white.
“We are very excited for
Mike and for Lockport athletics.”
Hicks was Dwyer’s freshman
football coach at Lockport
back in the fall of 1989.
“Yes, Dennis Hicks was
my freshman football coach
at Lockport,” Dwyer said.
“He taught me hard work
and accountability. I’ve
taken those values with me
throughout my career.”
Dwyer is the fourth AD
in just over a decade at
Lockport. Randy Konstans
(2007-2010) and Brian
Goff (2010-2015) preceded
Prunty (2015-2018). Before
that, Bob Allen and Kent Irvin
combined for more than
three decades as athletic director.
But Dwyer plans on
this being his final stop.
“An opportunity like this
is not one that comes along
too often,” Dwyer said.
“[It’s] just an opportunity
to work with great coaches
and programs here, [and] to
be part of something special.
Lockport is the peak of the
mountain for me.”
LISTEN UP
“You can’t expect the results unless you put in the
work. I’ve always known that, but it really showed
this year.”
