We don’t call
The Winnetka
Current a community
newspaper for
nothing.
While I have a calendar
of events on my desk
and a list of story ideas
accumulating, without
your unique stories and
contributions, it’s difficult
to properly operate and
produce the paper you
deserve each and every
week. I need to hear from
you, the community!
To continue the success
of The Current, here’s
some items you can send
me today to help:
1. Pet of the Week
Submit a photo and a
brief write-up on your
furry friend at home for
this weekly feature. And
I’m not just talking about
the pups — send me your
photo and story of your
cat, bird, hamster, fish,
phone
From Page 24
Society has many of the
directories produced since
1900, some of which are
on our website.
So it is impossible to
overestimate what home
phones meant to a local
community. It really was
the only way to communicate
in a timely fashion.
Phone numbers were
important. Even today, do
hedgehog or whatever
else you may have. All I
need is a couple sentences
about your pet and
a photo — it’s not ruff!
Give them the fame they
deserve on Page 6. We’re
almost out of entries!
2. Community calendar
submissions
If you took a look
at my desk, you’d find
a large calendar blotter.
I’ve scratched all
the events I’ve found
across the month, but I’m
always looking for more
things to cover and get
out to. Get your event in
Winnetka or Northfield
listed on my calendar
and more importantly the
community’s on Page 2
every week.
3. School news and
sports briefs
Before the school year
begins, give your child
some recognition in our
school news or sports
briefs section. Did they
make the dean’s list this
year at college? Graduate
with honors? Were they
recognized with an award
at New Trier, NSCDS or
Loyola? Make a special
team? Send me a brief
write-up about their
accolades and I’ll get it
published for you to hang
you still remember any of
your friend’s numbers?
Of course, now it is
difficult to get someone
to answer a phone call,
even (especially) when
they know who is calling.
Remember before Caller
ID and voicemail, when
you wouldn’t think of not
answering a phone call
for fear of missing an
important call?
Maybe I am nostalgic,
but I sometimes miss the
on your fridge.
4. Letter to the Editor
Have an opinion on
something in the community?
Want to get your
voice heard? Write me a
letter and I’ll publish it
in our Sound Off section
(this page). There are
some rules, though. Make
sure you take a peek at
the policy in the lower
right box.
5. Faith Briefs
We’re looking to
expand our faith section
in Life & Arts. I ask you
that you send me your
upcoming events at your
churches and temples.
We’ll help you get the
word out and be in touch
about possible newspaper
coverage.
6. Photos and Announcements
As much as I wish we
could be at everything in
Winnetka and Northfield,
it’s impossible with our
small team. If you have a
photograph from an event
we didn’t make it out to
or even something you
find unique in your neighborhood,
send it along
to get published! I also
accept your engagement,
wedding, anniversary and
baby announcements —
for free!
magic of a long awaited
call on a home phone. And
that phone book ... which
in many ways was the
social network of its day.
The Winnetka Historical
Society promotes
awareness of Winnetka’s
heritage through artifact
preservation, public access
to their museum and
Schmidt-Burnham Log
House, and enlightening
programs, exhibits and
publications.
I hope you will consider
taking a couple
minutes right now to send
me an email submission
at megan@winnetkacurrent.com.
Thank you to all
those you have already
reached out to introduce
themselves! I’m looking
forward to hearing from
the rest of you readers.
Editorials and columns are the
opinions of the author. Pieces
from 22nd Century Media are
the thoughts of the company as
a whole. The Winnetka Current
encourages readers to write
letters to Sound Off. All letters
must be signed, and names and
hometowns will be published.
We also ask that writers include
their address and phone number
for verification, not publication.
Letters should be limited to 400
words. The Winnetka Current
