<strong>SVCC</strong> Admission and Registration Information for Credit Courses<br />

Any person who has a high school diploma or the equivalent<br />

or is at least 18 years of age and is able to benefit from a<br />

program at the College may be admitted as a Curricular Student<br />

or as a Non- Curricular Student. High school students<br />

may also be enrolled in credit courses with their principal’s<br />

permission.<br />

Curricular Students (full- or part-time) who wish to be<br />

admitted to a specific degree, diploma, or certificate<br />

program should:<br />

1. Submit a completed Application for Admission.<br />

2. Submit a completed Application for Virginia In-State<br />

Tuition Rates if claiming entitlement to in-state rates.<br />

3. Have high school or GED and previous college transcripts<br />

sent to <strong>SVCC</strong>.<br />

4. Complete <strong>SVCC</strong> placement testing.<br />

5. After items 1 through 4 are complete, have an admissions<br />

interview with a college counselor for final acceptance<br />

into a curriculum.<br />

Non-Curricular Students (part- or full-time) not working<br />

toward completion of a degree, diploma, or certificate<br />

need only complete items 1 and 2 above.<br />

Placement testing and placement recommendations—If<br />

you are enrolling as a curricular student in any program<br />

or are enrolling in a math or English class, take the <strong>SVCC</strong><br />

placement tests and have an interview with a counselor.<br />

Your placement results may indicate that one or more<br />

Developmental courses are required. If you have taken a<br />

Developmental course and received an “R”, re-enroll in it. If<br />

you received a “U”, consult your advisor and your instructor<br />

before re-enrolling.<br />

Tuition and fees are subject to change without notice by State<br />

Board for Community Colleges.<br />

*Includes Technology Fee of $8.50 per credit, a Service Fee of<br />

$1.25 per credit, a Student Fee of $1.25 per credit, and for outof-state<br />

and contract students, a Capitol Fee of $21.00 per credit<br />

in addition to all other fees.<br />

Methods of Payment—Tuition and fees are due upon registration,<br />

and may be paid by cash, check, money order, ,<br />

allow the college to accept the credit card only if it is in<br />

the student’s name.<br />

Veterans—to be eligible for full- or part-time Veterans<br />

Affairs (VA) educational benefits (GI Bill), a veteran must<br />

complete all steps for a Curricular Student. VA applications<br />

may be obtained from the College Veterans Affairs Office.<br />

Financial Aid—Anyone who will be a Curricular Student<br />

may apply for financial aid. Applications may be obtained<br />

from the Financial Aid Office.<br />

*Students who have pre-registered for <strong>Fall</strong> <strong>2018</strong> will be dropped from all courses if tuition payment has not been<br />

received by this date. Registration is not complete until your tuition and fees are paid. We are standing by to assist you in<br />

every way we can. Please visit the financial aid office to see if you qualify for financial aid and visit our web site to sign<br />

up for the payment plan (TMS) to help you spread out your tuition obligation. Thank you for taking care of your tuition<br />

obligation in timely manner.<br />

MasterCard<br />

Senior Citizen—Persons 60 or over may be eligible for<br />

waiver of fees and tuition. Contact either Office of Admissions<br />

and Records for details.<br />

Minimum Enrollment for Classes—Each class is offered<br />

on the condition of adequate enrollment, and the College<br />

reserves the right to cancel or discontinue any course<br />

announced herein either because of small enrollment or for<br />

other reasons deemed sufficient by the College. The College<br />

also reserves the right to close registration in a course after<br />

maximum enrollment has been reached.<br />

Refunds—Students shall be eligible for a refund for those<br />

credit hours dropped during the add/drop period for the<br />

session. The refund will be at the full credit rate. After the<br />

add/drop period has passed, there will be no refunds, except<br />

for certain federal student financial aid recipients. This deadline<br />

should not be confused with the last day to withdraw<br />

without academic penalty for the standard semester. The<br />

last day to drop with refund is published in the college calendar.<br />

Refunds are issued to the registrant only, after the<br />

census date (last day to drop with a refund).<br />

To be eligible for a refund under any of the circumstances<br />

set forth in the foregoing paragraph, a student must execute<br />

an official drop form. Full refunds will be made when<br />

a course is cancelled by the College. If you have questions<br />

about the refund policy, contact either <strong>SVCC</strong> Admissions and<br />

Records office.<br />

Grades—It is the responsibility of the student to access their<br />

grades at the end of each semester through the college’s<br />

website at www.southside.edu. Students should report any<br />

discrepancies to the Admissions and Records Office within<br />

two weeks after the official end of the semester.<br />
