Never Stop
“In 2018, I earned an Associate Degree in Arts &
Science. I was battling with my diabetes in 2016 and
could not work so I decided to attempt going back to
finish my degree from 1992. My feelings about going
back to school are “Never stop, goals are an important
part of life .”
When I explored options for an ideal career, I knew I
wanted a career with lots of opportunities, flexibility,
and job security; and a choice that would keep me
“thinking and on my feet.” I found nursing to be an
excellent option and in May of 2018 graduated with
my Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC)
Associate Degree in Nursing. I now work at Sentara
Halifax Regional South Boston.
At first I wondered how I would fare as a male
without any prior medical experience. In my first year
of nursing school, which included clinical experiences
as a student, and with much support from instructors,
classmates, and family, I realized that I had made the
right decision. There is such a great feeling that comes
from helping people and trying to make their day a
little brighter!
I would recommend nursing to both men and
women because it is a rewarding, in-demand profession,
and there are so many directions to take in the
field. For anyone considering nursing, I would recommend
meeting with a college advisor to make sure
you are on track. Take the prerequisites very seriously,
because grades matter on the admission application.
And, talk to nurses and SVCC nursing faculty — they
love their jobs and will encourage you to go for it!
