Sometimes the most fun happens after dark, and that goes doubly for astrotourism.
Night owls on the hunt for the biggest, most star-speckled firmament are usually
best served away from the lights of a city like London. If your idea of holiday heaven
includes gazing up at the stars, any one of these destinations will serve you well...
SHARQIYA SANDS, OMAN
Experience camping under the stars in
one of Sharqiya Sands’ retreats, such as
1,000 Nights Camp or Desert Nights
Camp. Surrounded by gorgeous golden
dunes, there’s nothing to spoil the view
of that big sky above. Bring a deck chair
and your best telescope for a closer view
of the constellations.
ATACAMA DESERT, CHILE
Cocooned between the Andes and the
Chilean Coastal Range, the bone-dry
Atacama Desert offers spectacular stargazing
opportunities. The small town of San Pedro
de Atacama has become a bit of a hub for
astrotourism in recent years, and you’re sure
to find the perfect place to pitch up here.
WADI RUM, JORDAN
The true star of Lawrence of Arabia
(apologies to Peter O’Toole) is the
scene-stealing scenery of the Wadi Rum.
After dark, the sky is a glittering blanket
to wrap your gaze in. Whilst few sights in
Jordan can compete with Petra, an evening
under the stars at Wadi Rum Night Camp is
surely a close contender.
ULURU, AUSTRALIA
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Uluru – or
Ayers Rock – is a must-see in the Northern
Territory. As night falls, it’s a shadow on an
otherwise featureless landscape, surrounded
by stars. Take a stargazing tour with an
experienced astronomer, or go solo with
star maps in tow – you’ll be in astrotourist
heaven either way.
ICELAND
While the aurora borealis is the superstar
of Iceland’s night sky, don’t overlook its
gloriously star-studded backdrop. Head
southeast of Reykjavík for a spectacular view
of the Milky Way. The eclectically styled
Hotel Rangá has a dedicated observatory
where you can join keen amateurs for an
evening of stargazing.

NAVIGATE NEW YEAR’S EVE IN SYDNEY
It takes 26 hours for New Year to cross all time zones. Be one
of the first in the world to experience it at Sydney’s party to
end the year. On 31 December, Sydney uses its landmark
sights to full advantage with two massive firework and light
displays over the harbour.

CHERISH THE CHERRY BLOSSOMS IN JAPAN
Even for trained meteorologists, the sakura season of Japan
is notoriously unpredictable. If this is the sole reason for
your trip, plan enough time to ensure you’re there to enjoy
it. The season typically lasts two to three weeks from the
end of March into April but climate change leaves no corner
untouched. With the blooms come an unmissable atmosphere
of revelry and fun.

There is no definitive date for Tanzania’s Great
Migration – and that in itself is one of its
attractions. There are two annual highlight time
frames for this spectacular event. At the end of
January into February, the migrating animals calf.
In the summer months of July and August, the
wildebeest cross the central Serengeti heading
north towards the Masai Mara in Kenya.
