BEST FOR RELAXATION
FROM CITY TO SERENITY
ESCAPE ARTISTS
Living in London is hectic, busy and always on. Holidays
to escape all of that are essential. If you struggle to turn off
your day-to-day life, pick a resort that makes it easy or even
inescapable. NICOLA WALLINGTON, from A&K Harrods,
picks her favourite spots to de-stress and unwind
BEST FOR BEACH BLISS
KAMALAYA KOH SAMUI, THAILAND
Complete relaxation and rejuvenation – here you are at one
with the natural world, focused on you and inner peace. The
surroundings are blissful, serene and completely five-star. This is
not the place to be upwardly mobile. Rather, adopt a supine pose,
or perfect your downward dog.
SONEVA FUSHI, MALDIVES
This hotel is best described in its own words – barefoot luxury
with Robinson Crusoe simplicity. Here no detail goes missed
and no request is too far-fetched, but the ethos of the resort is
very much one of back to nature. With a ‘no shoes, no news’
policy, outdoors activities and a pure appreciation of the beautiful
surroundings are impossible to ignore.
BEST FOR GETTING AWAY
BAMURRU PLAINS, NORTHERN
TERRITORY, AUSTRALIA
Kakadu National Park is one of the most remote areas of the
world. Here you can go off the grid completely. There is no wifi
or network coverage throughout the hotel, located at the edge of
Kakadu. It’s home to the largest crocodile population in the world
so the only snapchat here will be something to listen to from the
safety of your boat or bed.
BEST FOR ENDORPHINS
PATAGONIA CAMP TORRES DEL PAINE,
PATAGONIA, CHILE
Nowhere else will you get back to nature in the same way. Here
every guest has direct access to the wonders of the area. This is
intimate and invigorating. The landscape and its wildlife take
priority in this resort. Relax in your private yurt and then walk to
the very centre of the aromatic forest.
SERIAN MASAI MARA, KENYA
Serian is another world. It transcends the everyday by delivering
Africa to its residents in spades. There is no wifi here, the
connection is based around nature, wildlife and your fellow
men. It is one of only 11 camps throughout the Mara North
Conservancy. Enjoy nature at its very best, by offering it your
full attention.
MOREISH DELIGHTS
Indulge in an opulently Moorish experience
with our escapist spa offer
Escape London’s pollution and noise with some me-time at the spa at
the Four Seasons Hotel London at Ten Trinity Square. We’ve teamed
up to offer London Club members 10 per cent off all hammam
treatments. During the 60-minute ‘Indulgence Hammam Ritual’
skin is revitalised and nourished. ‘Escape to Taliouine’ begins with a
purifying exfoliation, followed by a orange-blossom infused shower.
The offer is available from Monday to Friday, terms and conditions
SUPERSTARS
Sometimes the most fun happens after dark, and that goes doubly for astrotourism.
Night owls on the hunt for the biggest, most star-speckled firmament are usually
best served away from the lights of a city like London. If your idea of holiday heaven
includes gazing up at the stars, any one of these destinations will serve you well...
SHARQIYA SANDS, OMAN
Experience camping under the stars in
one of Sharqiya Sands’ retreats, such as
1,000 Nights Camp or Desert Nights
Camp. Surrounded by gorgeous golden
dunes, there’s nothing to spoil the view
of that big sky above. Bring a deck chair
and your best telescope for a closer view
of the constellations.
ATACAMA DESERT, CHILE
Cocooned between the Andes and the
Chilean Coastal Range, the bone-dry
Atacama Desert offers spectacular stargazing
opportunities. The small town of San Pedro
de Atacama has become a bit of a hub for
astrotourism in recent years, and you’re sure
to find the perfect place to pitch up here.
WADI RUM, JORDAN
The true star of Lawrence of Arabia
(apologies to Peter O’Toole) is the
scene-stealing scenery of the Wadi Rum.
After dark, the sky is a glittering blanket
to wrap your gaze in. Whilst few sights in
Jordan can compete with Petra, an evening
under the stars at Wadi Rum Night Camp is
surely a close contender.
ULURU, AUSTRALIA
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Uluru – or
Ayers Rock – is a must-see in the Northern
Territory. As night falls, it’s a shadow on an
otherwise featureless landscape, surrounded
by stars. Take a stargazing tour with an
experienced astronomer, or go solo with
star maps in tow – you’ll be in astrotourist
heaven either way.
ICELAND
While the aurora borealis is the superstar
of Iceland’s night sky, don’t overlook its
gloriously star-studded backdrop. Head
southeast of Reykjavík for a spectacular view
of the Milky Way. The eclectically styled
Hotel Rangá has a dedicated observatory
where you can join keen amateurs for an
evening of stargazing.
When you’ve decided on your dream holiday, don’t be deflated by it being completely
sold out. With a global guide to what’s hot and how to make sure you’re part of the action
CHERISH THE CHERRY BLOSSOMS IN JAPAN
Even for trained meteorologists, the sakura season of Japan
is notoriously unpredictable. If this is the sole reason for
your trip, plan enough time to ensure you’re there to enjoy
it. The season typically lasts two to three weeks from the
end of March into April but climate change leaves no corner
untouched. With the blooms come an unmissable atmosphere
of revelry and fun.
MARVEL AT THE GREAT MIGRATION
There is no definitive date for Tanzania’s Great
Migration – and that in itself is one of its
attractions. There are two annual highlight time
frames for this spectacular event. At the end of
January into February, the migrating animals calf.
In the summer months of July and August, the
wildebeest cross the central Serengeti heading
north towards the Masai Mara in Kenya.
VISIT CAPE TOWN AT CHRISTMAS
South Africa’s cosmopolitan Cape Town is a festive
season hot spot. With sunny weather and little chance
of rain, the city tends to be busy from mid-December to
mid-January – but most holidaymakers will head here
between 20 December and 5 January. Cape Town might
not feel traditionally like Christmas but it’s a present your
family will thank you for.
EXPERIENCE THE BEAR
NECESSITIES IN CANADA
The showstopper of bear season has to
be during the salmon-spawning months
of August and early September. Lasting
typically two to three weeks, this is one
of nature’s most dazzling displays and
people flock from across the world for
the experience.
from 18 months in advance and most of these
LIE BACK AND WAIT FOR
THE LIGHTS IN ICELAND
It’s very hard, if not impossible, to
guarantee a time and place for the
best northern lights exposure.
To experience the night sky like you
never have before, don’t plan on a
short stay and be ready to follow
local advice. Be prepared to move
quickly – generally there is only
about two hours’ notice to the next
sighting. The best times of year are
February, March, September and
October as this is when the nights
are fullest and darkest.
