Bad Reichenhall - Tomas

Vachenlueg Chapel can tell
an unusual story: it collapsed
in 1824, although the altar
and glass cabinet with the
statue of the Virgin Mary remained
unharmed. The chapel
was rebuilt in 1848.
The originally Romanesque
column based basilica of
Berchtesgaden’s Abbey
Church (Stiftskirche) dates
from the 12th century and
was rebuilt in gothic style.
The origin of St. Andreas Parish
Church goes back to the
Romantic period. The church
was built by the townspeople
of Berchtesgaden.
North of Berchtesgaden lies
the pilgrimage church of
Maria Gern, often referred to
as the most beautiful church
in the Berchtesgadener Land.
The church has an oval floor
plan and noteworthy is the
Madonna and Child from
1666.
The Abbey Church of Laufen
was built between 1330 and

Rottmayr. Born in 1654 in
Laufen, he became the genius

The small pilgrimage
church of Maria Hilf in
Bischofswiesen-Loipl, with
its “Mount of Olives” chapel,
was constructed in 1799.
This unostentatious church
featuring a simple nave was
extended in 1824 to include a
narthex centrally topped by a
tower, thus lending it a unique
appearance.
A jewel of the late Rococo period
is the pilgrimage church
of Maria am Kunterweg built
in 1733.
The pilgrimage church of
Ettenberg, ‘Maria Heimsuchung’,
has a charming
Baroque interior.
The poet Josef Mohr – who
wrote the lyrics for ‘Silent
Night’ - was parish assistant
at the parish church of Ramsau
dating back to 1512. The
view of the church from the
riverbank is well-known the
world over.
