Vachenlueg Chapel can tell<br />

an unusual story: it collapsed<br />

in 1824, although the altar<br />

and glass cabinet with the<br />

statue of the Virgin Mary remained<br />

unharmed. The chapel<br />

was rebuilt in 1848.<br />

The originally Romanesque<br />

column based basilica of<br />

Berchtesgaden’s Abbey<br />

Church (Stiftskirche) dates<br />

from the 12th century and<br />

was rebuilt in gothic style.<br />

The origin of St. Andreas Parish<br />

Church goes back to the<br />

Romantic period. The church<br />

was built by the townspeople<br />

of Berchtesgaden.<br />

North of Berchtesgaden lies<br />

the pilgrimage church of<br />

Maria Gern, often referred to<br />

as the most beautiful church<br />

in the Berchtesgadener Land.<br />

The church has an oval floor<br />

plan and noteworthy is the<br />

Madonna and Child from<br />

1666.<br />

The Abbey Church of Laufen<br />

was built between 1330 and<br />

1338 as a Romanesque basili-<br />

interior of a barrel-shaped<br />

church in southern Germany<br />

and houses three paintings of<br />

of Baroque color.<br />

The small pilgrimage<br />

church of Maria Hilf in<br />

Bischofswiesen-Loipl, with<br />

its “Mount of Olives” chapel,<br />

was constructed in 1799.<br />

This unostentatious church<br />

featuring a simple nave was<br />

extended in 1824 to include a<br />

narthex centrally topped by a<br />

tower, thus lending it a unique<br />

appearance.<br />

A jewel of the late Rococo period<br />

is the pilgrimage church<br />

of Maria am Kunterweg built<br />

in 1733.<br />

The pilgrimage church of<br />

Ettenberg, ‘Maria Heimsuchung’,<br />

has a charming<br />

Baroque interior.<br />

The poet Josef Mohr – who<br />

wrote the lyrics for ‘Silent<br />

Night’ - was parish assistant<br />

at the parish church of Ramsau<br />

dating back to 1512. The<br />

view of the church from the<br />

riverbank is well-known the<br />

world over.<br />
