• Bathing: Take a shower instead of a bath to save water. A short shower
uses less water than a long one. A low-flow showerhead will save as much
as 50% of the amount of water currently used, while still providing a refreshing,
cleansing shower. Installing a low-flow showerhead is the single
most effective conservation step that can be taken inside the home.
• Toilet: Toilets sold during the ‘80s and early ‘90s use 3.5 gallons per
flush. The greatest savings come from replacing your toilet with a 1.6
gallon model. Since 1992 in Texas and 1994 nationally, new toilets must
use 1.6 gallons or less per flush. Do not use a brick in your toilet tank.
The brick will crumble and can damage the fixture.
• Lavatory: Change your habits! Don’t let water run continuously while
brushing your teeth, shaving or washing your hands. Also, a low-flow faucet
aerator can save up to 50% of the water currently used in the lavatory.

About 8% of in-home water use takes place in the kitchen.

• Run water only when necessary.
• Fill the basin or a dish pan to rinse dishes instead
of using running water.
• Soak pots and pans before washing.
• Fill the basin or a pan with water to wash fruits and vegetables.
• Keep a pitcher of water in the fridge rather than running
tap water until it is cold enough to drink.
• Operate the garbage disposal only when necessary.

• Wash only full loads.
• When you need to buy a new machine, take a look at the water saving
models. Newer models can cut water use by 25% and generally are no
more expensive than non-conserving models.

• Washing machines: Doing the laundry requires about
14% of water used inside the home.
• Conserve by adjusting the water level to match the size of your loads.
• Wash only full loads.
Pipes: Insulate hot water pipes where possible to avoid long delays and
wasted water while waiting for the water to “run hot.”
Water Heater: Check the thermostat. Don’t have your water heater
thermostat set too high. Settings higher than 125 degrees waste energy
since the water has to be mixed with cold water before use.
And most important... fix those leaks!
• Leaks can account for 10% or more of the water bill. Leaks waste
both water and energy.
• Need proof? A toilet with a silent leak of one cup of water a minute - a
mere dribble - wastes about 2,700 GALLONS OF WATER A MONTH. That’s
not just water down the drain, that’s dollars down the drain. Your dollars.

Gardening Tips for August
• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects.
• Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves
and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of
iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates.
• Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone
meal around the roots.
• Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth.
• Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies.
• Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas
of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under
control. There is a new generation going now. This
batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the
damage.
• Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine
grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a
fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing
while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new
sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates
a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry
the turf.
• Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add
organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month
or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep
the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable
environment.

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our
residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running
at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person.
Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which
could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal.
Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be
kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris
County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to
have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any
dog or cat to become a stray.”
Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following
circumstances:
1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet
in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who
is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question
2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle
3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal
does not have access to sidewalk or street.”
While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you
work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly
restrained.
Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place
for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not
only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area,
but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or
possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

gives your young pets
their Rabies shot remember
to get their ID tags.
The Rabies tag lists the
name, phone number
and address of the vet.
So! All you need to do is put the Rabies tag onto the pet’s collar and
leave it there all the time. That way, if the pet gets loose, anyone finding
him or her can look at the tag to see the vet’s phone number and call to
report the lost animal. Better yet, add another tag to your pet’s collar
that lists the dog or cat’s name and your own phone number or address.
You can get these from any pet store. When a pet has these but goes
astray, anyone finding it can call you and you can go get him or her right
away. Your pet will be very glad to see you! A happy pet is a loving pet.

SPECIAL EVENTS
• BOOK SALE - The Friends of the Maud Marks Library will hold their next
book sale on Saturday, September 1 st at 10 AM until 4 PM. There is a
large selection of hardback fiction and nonfiction, as well as children’s
books and paperbacks. All proceeds will benefit the library.
• FAMILY FILM FESTIVAL - Bring the whole family out to our family film
festival this summer. On August 3 rd , a tiger scours the Hundred Acre
Woods for his family. Popcorn will be provided. Talk to a librarian to
get a complete schedule.
• ART DISPLAY - During the month of August, the Islamic Arts Society will
display art pieces include canvas, paintings, woodwork and ceramics, all
produced by Houston based contemporary artists. IAS aims to share the
rich heritage of arts in Islam. The society organizes events to celebrate
“Islamic Arts” and promote the positive image of our community among
Houstonians. Art is a common language and binds diverse communities.
By sharing Islamic arts we hope to promote mutual understanding and
to bring the broader Houston community together.
• SUMMER READING PROGRAM - “Libraries Rock!” The 2018 Summer
Reading Club is for both readers and listeners and will run from Monday,
June 4 through Saturday, August 4 th . There will be weekly storytimes,
special programs and crafts for children of all ages. This year we will
be using a point system with prizes including a book, medal and more!
• TEEN SUMMER READING PROGRAM - “Libraries Rock!” Special
teenage programs include various musical events. Young adults who
complete the summer reading program will receive sunglasses, a book
and more! So this summer, join us! All programs are free. Thursdays
at 3 PM.

• VOLUNTEER AT THE LIBRARY - Volunteer opportunities abound at
the Maud Marks Library. Volunteers are needed to help shelve, count
patrons and more. Applications will be available beginning August
13 th . Students should be in high school and must be able to commit
to two hours a week.
• ADULT SUMMER READING PROGRAM - “Libraries Rock!” All adults
ages 18 and up are invited to participate in the Harris County Public
Library summer reading program. Special programs include movies
and computer classes. This year we will be using a point system with
prizes including a book, sunglasses and more. At the library, read
books in various genres and receive entries in drawings for various
gift baskets. Read books in five different genres and receive an entry
into the drawing for our grand prize of various gift certificates and a
Kindle. Come in and see what we have for you! Also, join us for our
family summer reading programs. All programs are free and everyone
is welcome, although many of the classes do require pre-registration.
• TIMELESS TRAVELERS: SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL - Seniors 55+ are
invited to join the library’s Timeless Travelers program for a trip to
Miller Outdoor Theatre for the annual Shakespeare Festival. The bus
will be departing on Tuesday, August 2 nd at 7 PM. We will be seeing
Shakespeare’s masterpiece, Hamlet. Seating is extremely limited.

• VOLUNTEERS ROCK!… COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER FAIR - Volunteers
Rock! Come to the library on Saturday, August 4 th , 10 AM to 2 PM for
our fourth annual volunteer fair. Dozens of community organizations
in the Greater Katy area in need of help will be here to tell you all about
what they do to make life just a little easier for the Katy community.
You can find out all you need to know to assist others in need. Libraries
might Rock, but so do Volunteers!
• COLLEGE INFORMATION SESSION - Are you ready for college? Come
Monday, August 6 th at 1:30 PM for this introductory session that will
help you to make a plan including finding the right college fit, admissions
steps, finishing a degree you started, tuition costs and paying for
college. This program is presented by University of Houston-Victoria.
• RENEWABLE ENERGY - Want to save money and help the environment
at the same time? Solar panels may be the answer you are looking
for. Join us on Monday, August 6 th at 7 PM as Sheldon Wilkinson of
Alba Energy come to talk about renewable energy resources and solar
panels. Learn what you need to do to go green!
• DIY WORKSHOP: MAKE YOUR OWN SOAP - Would you like to have

• ESL TUTOR TRAINING WORKSHOP - Harris County Public Library
provides English as a Second Language classes for adults at several
of its branch libraries. The next training here at the library will be on
August 11 th at 10 AM-1 PM. There is no charge for training attendance
or materials. Those enrolling in the workshop are requested to actively
support the ESL program for at least five months. Tutors are needed
throughout the Katy area. If you are interested in becoming a tutor,
please call the library to register.
• PEOPLE’S LAW SCHOOL - Do you have legal questions but don’t even
know where to start? On Saturday, August 11 th at 2 PM, the library is
pleased to host The People’s Law School presented by the Katy Bar
Association. Come get answers to all your legal questions.
• OUTSMART THE SCAMMERS & DON’T GET NAILED! - Senior citizens
and their family members are invited to join us for a new series at the
library. Every 3 rd Friday of the month, experts will be here to discuss
various topics pertinent to senior living. On August 17 th at 10 AM, we
will be discussing current scams in Texas. Learn how to spot certain
red flags that may indicate a fraudulent encounter, resources you can
turn to in the event you or a loved one is targeted and steps you can
take now to help protect yourself and your loved ones. Come discover

they will discuss various topics unique to gardening in the Houston
area. This month, on August 18 th at 10:30 AM, learn all about fall vegetables.

• COLOR ME RELAXED - What is the newest way for adults to relax and
have a good time? Coloring! The library now has an adult coloring hour
on the 4 th Tuesday of every month. Join us as we color, chat, have a
snack and listen to relaxing music. We will provide plenty of pages for
coloring and colored pencils, although, you are more than welcome
to bring your own.
• BOOK DISCUSSION CLUBS - The Library hosts book clubs that meet
monthly. The Afternoon Book Club meets on the second Thursday of
the month at 1 PM.
• JUST DESSERTS MYSTERY BOOK CLUB - Meetings held the third Wednesday
of the month at 2 PM. You are encouraged to bring your favorite dessert
to eat while we discuss whether our villains get their just desserts.
• COMPUTER CLASSES - The library offers a variety of computer classes
each month. You must know how to use a mouse and a keyboard.

• SPECIAL STORYTIME - Please join us for a special Preschool Storytime
on Wednesday, August 8 th at 10:15 AM. Fire Marshall Tom Petty and
his dog Cinder will be here to talk about fire safety. Pet Cinder and
tell her all about how you plan on staying safe during an emergency.
• INFANT STORYTIME - This program will meet each Tuesday morning
at 10:15 AM and 11:15 AM. This is an interactive program for children,
ages 0 to 12 months and their caregivers. Each session will last about
20 minutes, featuring nursery rhymes, songs and finger plays.
• STORYTIME - Storytime for preschool-aged children is held each Wednesday
at 10:15 AM. Stories, fingerplays and songs are featured. This is ideal
for children ages 3 to 5, but all children and their caregivers are welcome.
• TOTALLY TODDLER STORYTIME - Toddlers, ages 18 to 36 months,
are invited to participate in our Totally Toddler Storytime, which will
be held on Thursdays, at 10:15 AM and 11:15 AM. Tickets are required
for Toddler Storytime. Tickets are given to the first 30 toddlers the day
of the event.

While children are filled with excitement and first-day jitters,
parents are filled with thoughts of “Am I prepared enough?”
To help eliminate these thoughts and help you and your
child prepare for the new school year, all you need is a little
organization and forethought. Here are 10 back to school tips
to kick-start the new year and get you prepared for a fresh start.
1. Get back into your sleep routine. To help eradicate those stressful school mornings,
set up a regular bedtime and morning time routine to help prepare your child for
school. Begin your usual school sleep routine about a week or so before school starts.
2. Shop for school supplies together. To get your child excited about starting a
new grade, shop for supplies together. Allow them to pick out their own backpack,
lunchbox, etc. This is a great way to give them a little bit of responsibility too!
3. Re-establish school routines. Have your child practice getting back into the rhythm
of their daily school routine. You can do this by having them wake up at the same
time every day and eat around the same time they would at school. About a week
or so before school starts, plan a few outside activities where your child will have to
leave and come home around the same time they would if they were in school. This
will help them be rested and ready for the big day.
4. Set up a homework station. Sit down with your child and together designate a
time and place where he can do his homework each day. This can be somewhere
quiet like in the den or even in the kitchen while you are preparing dinner. Make sure
to choose a time where you are available in case your child needs your help.
5. Prepare for the unexpected. Working parents know that it can be difficult to find
a sitter when your child is sick. Before school even begins, it’s a good idea to have a
sitter already lined up in case you get that phone call home from the nurse saying
your child is ill.
6. Make an after-school game plan. Make a plan for where your child will go after
school lets out for the day. Depending upon the age of your child, figure out if they
will go to a neighbor’s house, an afterschool program or be allowed to stay home by
themselves. This will help eliminate any confusion during the first few weeks.
7. Turn off the TV and video games. For a lot of children summertime is filled with
endless video games and TV programs. Children are usually in shock when they
begin school and realize that six hours of their day is going to spent learning and not
playing games and watching TV. Ease your child into the learning process by turning
off the electrics and encouraging them to read or play quietly.
8. Review school material and information. For most parents, schools send home
a packet with a ton of information regarding their child’s new teacher, important
dates to remember, emergency forms and transportation routines. Make sure that
you read through this information carefully and mark down all important dates on
your calendar.
9. Get organized. The best way to prepare for back to school time is to be organized.
With school comes a massive amount of paperwork, which can consume your
household. Designate a spot in your house for homework, permission slips and any
other school-related papers. This can help eliminate all of that paper clutter and
make your life less stressful.
10. Get your child’s yearly checkup. School and germs go hand in hand, so it’s
best to get your child’s yearly checkup before school even starts. Get any required
vaccinations and ask your pediatrician the best ways your child can stay healthy
throughout the school year.
Through preparation and organization, you can ensure that your child will have a
smooth transition to the start of the new school year. By doing so, you and your
child can enjoy the rest of your summer break.

The Gold Card Club is free to Katy ISD residents who are 65 years of

at the reception area of the Education Support Complex and fill out
a small application. Questions should be directed to the Katy ISD
Communications Department at 281-396-2308. Membership benefits
include the following:
Free or reduced-price admission to most Katy ISD fine arts events such
as plays, musicals and concerts in all district schools with the exception
of fund-raising events such as dinners.
Free admission to district-sponsored regular season athletic events
(not playoffs) at Katy schools and Rhodes Stadium.
Athletic schedules are available through the Katy ISD Athletic Department
website or individual schools. Fine arts schedules are posted
on each school’s website. Many fine arts performances such as band,
orchestra and choir concerts offer a free admission, but some events
such as plays, musical productions or dance shows may require an
admission charge. Reduced-price admissions to these events are
available to Gold Card members. Reservations may be required and
some performances may have limited free-admission seating for Gold
Card members.
Gold Card Members that have an original card signed by Dr. Merrell are
still valid. The information on the back of the card has been updated
to reflect that not all plays and other events will always be free.

Epiphany of the Lord Catholic School will begin with Pre-Kindergarten
through Fourth grade in the 2018-2019 school year and add additional
grades each year up to grade Eight. Principal Dr. Nicholas Morgan is a

CLASS OF 2018 VALEDICTORIAN & SALUTATORIAN
Harmony School of Innovation-Katy celebrates all 40 seniors in the graduating
Class of 2018, with 100% graduation rate and 100% planning to
attend college in the fall. HSI-Katy also announces their Valedictorian,
Tanner Scott and Salutatorian, Rachel Mgbeike.
Tanner Scott moves to California in September to attend Stanford. He
is yet undecided on a major but imagines it will be biology since he is
currently interested in becoming a neurologist. His advice to the students
still in high school is “work hard, take advantage of all the opportunities
high school offers and eventually it will all pay off! I’m living proof.”

Rachel Mgbeike heads east to attend Yale University and intends to
double major in Music and Global Health. She is thinking about becoming
a cardiologist; getting her M.D. and possibly pursuing a Ph.D.
Her advice to the students younger than her is “Never give up. You’re
closer to your dreams than you think. Keep your head up and keep
moving forward.”

Griffin Jay Alexander, a resident of Lake Forest,
is the valedictorian of Saint John XXIII’s
class of 2018. Griffin Alexander will be the
second generation to attend Notre Dame,
majoring in Engineering with hopes of going
on to law school. He is the son of Jay and Amy
Alexander of Katy, Texas.

A National Merit Commended Scholar, Griffin
has been a member of the National Honor Society,
Mu Alpha Theta, National Science Honor
Society, National Spanish Honor Society and
the International Thespian Society. He has
served as an Altar Server, Head Altar Server, a
Lion Ambassador and a House representative.
For the last four years, Griffin has been the St.
John XXIII lion mascot and a three year All American performing once in
the Citrus Bowl pregame show. Griffin was a member of the ComedySportz
team and president of the Young Conservatives Club. Griffin spent
the summer after his junior year at Notre Dame after being accepted into
their Summer Scholars Program where he studied The Contemporary
Church and its Evolving Mission. Griffin has dedicated numerous hours
to community service and mentoring retreats through Epiphany of the
Lord Catholic Church where he is a member. Griffin’s leadership abilities
are strong, as evident by his commitment to earning his Eagle Scout
rank and serving on the Archdiocesan Youth Council for the Archdiocese
of Galveston-Houston for four years. It is important to Griffin to take
an active role in serving his community. He has served on the mission
field organized a clothing drive, served the homeless and worked with
Alzheimer’s disease patients. Griffin’s favorite memory at St. John XXIII
was participating in the theater productions.

Friday, August 17, 2018
A Place for Peanut, Inc. will host its 2 nd Annual Gala on Friday, August
17, 2018 from 7-10 PM at Kirby Ice House located at 3333 Eastside St.
Houston, 77098. A Place for Peanut is a non-profit horse sanctuary and
equine therapy foundation. The organization is dedicated to rescuing
horses, donkeys and miniature horses from being slaughtered; while
bringing joy to children and veterans in hospitals through its special
programs and therapy.
Honorary Chair Michelle Maresh along with Gala Co-Chairs Christine and
Steve Johnson will welcome guests to a fun-filled evening with bites
and beverages along with live entertainment provided by Houston’s
legendary Scott Gertner Jazz Band. Houston abstract artist Ann Marie
Vancas will paint “live” a piece of artwork that will be auctioned during
the evening for the organization. Casey Curry will serve as the Master of
Ceremonies. Guests will have the chance to meet two miniature rescue
horses from the sanctuary and place their bets in a live and silent auction.

ART COLONY ASSOCIATION TO CELEBRATE 47 YEARS
WITH BAYOU CITY ART FESTIVAL DOWNTOWN
The Art Colony Association, Inc. (ACA) will celebrate 47 years of fine
art and giving back to local non-profits as it spotlights 300 artists at
Bayou City Art Festival in Downtown Houston, Saturday and Sunday,
October 13-14, 2018, 10 AM - 6 PM at 901 Bagby Street. Cost $12 online

The sophisticated gallery will transform the streets of Downtown into
artistic avenues bursting with colors and culture. As one of the top
outdoor fine art festivals in the U.S., the weekend festival will provide

under the iconic Houston skyline. Bayou City Art Festival Downtown will
benefit local non-profits and feature live music in front of City Hall and

the tissue bank at Shriner’s Hospital. Our sponsors and players truly
help us provide funds that directly go to Shriner’s Tissue Bank where
hundreds of patients receive life-saving tissue which helps the children
not only survive but also return home to their families! Thanks to all

the year, Houston Restaurant Weeks. That’s 34 days of meals and
deals raising money for The Houston Food Bank. More than 250
area restaurants are expected to participate by serving specially
priced multi-course prix fixe menus that include brunch, lunch

August 25 th - The AIA SandCastle Competition is a fund-raising
event for AIA Houston and ArCH Foundation as well as one of the
top five revenue generating events for the City of Galveston. This
year over 60 teams have their eyes and shovels set on winning the
prestigious Golden Bucket Award. Firms begin months in advance
generating ideas, developing designs and assigning duties. On
the day of the event the teams, stretched along the beach front,
meticulously sculpt their piles of sand and work non-stop for five
hours. The judging of the sculptures is rated on originality of concept,
artistic execution, technical difficulty, carving technique and
utilization of the site. In addition to the Golden Bucket, awards are
given in several categories including Best Traditional Castle, Best
Architectural Icon, Kidtastic! - Disney Edition, Best Cinematic, Best
Meme and Houston-centric as well as best team t-shirt design,
best team signage, best costume and public favorite. At the end
of the day, everyone goes home with memories of a great day at
the beach filled with fun, sand and sun. For more information, visit

Through August 26 th - “The Faces of Syrian Refugees,” by photographer
Michael S Cohen, consists of life sized color portraits
accompanied by Proust questionnaire style interviews, offering an
intimate visit with 20 Syrian refugees. The exhibition will also include
a special feature of Houston-area Holocaust survivors Naomi
Warren, Lea Weems, Ruth Steinfeld, Anna and Emil Steinberger, Bill
Orlin and Renee Danziger, who thrived after being one-time refugees
in America. After a 25-year hiatus, Cohen worked with a dozen
non-profits in fields ranging from education, to felon rehabilitation
in inner city youth. During this time, he watched with horror as a
Syrian war escalated and the refugee crisis reached unimaginable
proportions. An idea formed to travel and meet successfully resettled
Syrian refugees, photograph and interview them. Since the
war began in 2011, millions of Syrians have been displaced from
their homes, and their country. The subjects come from all walks
of life and now are engaged in everything from teaching art classes
to volunteering as museum docents to conducting a Syrian expat
orchestra. During the atrocities of WWII, Holocaust survivors were
uprooted from their homelands and resettled in other countries.
More than one half of all European Jews perished by the end of
WWII; many who survived picked up the pieces of their shattered
lives and moved forward. A special feature will be included in this
exhibition depicting the images and stories of several local Holocaust
survivors upon their arrival in Houston prior to 1955 and how
they worked hard to achieve the American dream. The exhibition is
on view through Sunday, August 26, 2018, in the Mincberg Gallery.

the Crescent City tradition with live music from The Zydeco Dots!

August 31 st - September 2 nd - The Brewmasters Craft Beer Festival
returns to Moody Gardens. This Gulf Coast beer festival draws

Registration for Fun, Fair, Positive Soccer
(FFPS) is open for boys and girls ages 4 to 18
for the fall Season. Games start on October 6,
2018. FFPS is a non-profit youth soccer program
dedicated to providing a positive youth
sports experience for all children. Founded
in 1986 in Katy, Texas, FFPS has grown to 22
leagues and 16,000 players throughout the
Greater Houston area. FFPS offers children a
fun and fair experience, including one practice
per week, a full uniform and trophy for every
player, equal playing time and play every position,
co-ed/balanced teams, positive coaching
and more. No tryouts are required.

HOMESCHOOL BASEBALL
The West Houston Thunder is a baseball program for homeschool boys
between the ages of 8-18. We offer baseball programs for Elementary,
Junior High and High School level competition. We regularly compete
against schools, leagues, select teams and other homeschool teams.
Our practice location is Memorial Ashford Little League, 12900 Westmere
Drive, Houston. For the summer months, we offer Boot Camp for
ages 13-18, Skills Clinic for ages 8-14 and Wiffle Ball & Pizza for all ages.
Registration is required for these events. Fall baseball will begin August

The West Houston Thunder High School team traveled to central Florida
in May to play in the Homeschool World Series (HWS). Twenty-five
teams from around the country participated. The players and coaches
are proud of the fact the program improved upon last year’s Division
III championship. Andrew Wood and Nathan Lindblade were selected
as Division II All Stars. Thunder participates in the HWS every May.
ALBION HURRICANES FC (AHFC)

KATY QUILTERS NEEDS HELP FOR CHARITIES
Calling on all the quilters in the area to help make pillowcases and small
blankets. This last year we donated over 200 pillowcases and small blankets
to various charities. The demand is even higher with all of the families that
have lost their homes because of the fires in and around our area. We need
you and we have fabric that has been donated but we need your hands

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: VANTAGE HOSPICE
Vantage Volunteers Needed! Looking to volunteer in a way that makes
a difference in people’s lives? This is it! Our compassionate volunteer
team takes an individualized approach to care. We help provide the best
quality of life, for the end of life. This is accomplished through social
interaction, companionship, active listening and activities. In addition,
sometimes we aide and support the family by relieving the caregiver. If

FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s
difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged
by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize
themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately,
Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence:
Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates
in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women
(NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer
kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW

LITERACY ADVANCE OF HOUSTON IS
LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS

community! Literacy Advance is Houston’s largest and oldest 100%
volunteer-supported literacy organization - and we need your help!
We’re calling all passionate volunteers to help adults learn to read, write
and speak English. All classes are free because they are taught by caring
people just like you willing to volunteer a few hours a week. We’d love
to match you with a person in need. Ola read her first book at age 49,
thanks to a tutor just like you. Prior teaching experience is welcome but
not necessary. Training and ongoing support is provided and we have

GIVE A SENIOR THE GIFT OF MOBILITY!
KATY AREA RIDE SERVICE NEEDS YOUR HELP DRIVING OLDER ADULTS
Katy Area Ride Service (KARS) is looking for your assistance in transporting
seniors in need of personal (hair salon, bank, classes, volunteering,
visiting a loved one, taking a pet to the vet) and occasional medical rides.
Rides are provided in your personal vehicles to passengers who are age
65+ and ambulatory (not wheelchair bound, may use walking aids). Time
commitment is flexible and you choose the Katy territory in which you want
to drive. Volunteers do not provide rides that go east of Barker Cypress,
north of Clay Road, west of FM 1463 or south of Bellaire Blvd at the Grand
Parkway. Benefits to Volunteer Drivers include the opportunity to help
seniors retain independent living, dignity and freedom. Drivers tell us the
day(s) and times they are able to drive. Drivers choose if they wait for the
senior or return later to pick them up. Drivers must be between 21 years
of age and 78 years of age with a good driving record, pass a background
check and show proof of insurance coverage (state minimums) as required
by the State of Texas. To request a volunteer driver application, call 832-

(3) that designates it as a transportation service provider for seniors and
non-wheelchair bound persons with disabilities.

LEMON ICEBOX MERINGUE PIE
You could make this on Lemon Meringue Pie Day August 15 th !
INGREDIENTS:
1 (9 inch) prepared graham cracker crust
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
3 egg yolks
1/2 cup lemon juice
3 egg whites
5 teaspoons white sugar
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat broiler to 500 degrees F (260 degrees C). In a medium mixing
bowl beat together condensed milk, egg yolks and lemon juice. Pour
mixture into graham cracker crust.
In a separate glass or metal mixing bowl, beat egg whites with
sugar until stiff peaks form. Spread evenly on top of lemon filling.
Brown in preheated broiler just until meringue is set and golden.
Keep pie refrigerated.

SPUMONI ICE CREAM
You could make this on National Spumoni Day August 21 st !
INGREDIENTS:
3 cups pistachio ice cream, softened
3 cups vanilla (or cherry vanilla) ice cream, softened
1 cup maraschino cherries, chopped
1/3 cup sliced almonds, chopped
2 tablespoons cherry brandy
1 teaspoon almond extract
A few specks pink food coloring
3 cups chocolate ice cream, softened
DIRECTIONS:
1. Line 9- by 5-inch loaf pan with plastic wrap. Place a 12- by 8-inch
piece of parchment paper into pan, letting sides overhang the edges.
Spread pistachio ice cream into pan and smooth the top. Freeze
until semi-frozen, about 20 minutes.
2. Stir vanilla ice cream, chopped cherries, almonds, brandy and
almond extract until combined. Stir in food coloring (if using) to
desired shade of pink. Spread over pistachio ice cream. Freeze for
30 minutes or until semi-firm.
3. Spread chocolate ice cream over cherry ice cream and smooth
top. Wrap and freeze until completely solid, 3 to 4 hours. Remove
from pan, remove wrap and slice with a hot, wet, knife.
